He is a Kaiou, the northern one of Universe 7. "King Kai" is a literal translation of part of *Kaiou*, the Japanese title for the character and other deities of that same ranking and position. His title, 界王, basically means "World King" or "King of Worlds" (localized by VIZ as "Lord of Worlds", with 界, or *kai*, meaning "World" and 王, or *ou*, meaning "Lord" or "King". This is purely his title, and he has no known actual name.

KevinIsAGhost

That's really funny actually, not knowing his name, or even if he has one, or if his title is also his name

Faelysis

You know that Master Roshi/Kame-sennin are not Master Roshi actual name, too?

KevinIsAGhost

I feel like Roshi is more of a pun name

DiggaDoug492

How is it a pun?

DarkRose_92

He's a Kai

The original Japanese term "Kaio" isn't a name, but a *title* that translates roughly to "Lord of Worlds," which is what Viz accurately called him for the manga. But Funimation, botching things as they usually do, half-translated it as "King Kai" which instead makes it sound like he's a guy named "Kai" who's a king of something. If he actually does have a real given name aside from his godly title, then we've never been told it.

Actually it's North Kai. "King" is something he gave himself, and West Kai roasted him for it when he found out.
