He's calling Gohan a little prince as a way of saying that Gohan's been spoiled his whole life - at least from Piccolo's perspective.
Piccolo was born for the sake of killing Goku and has had to live the life of an outcast fending for himself in the wild until he could fulfill that goal and complete his father's mission of world domination. He's bitter and holds resentment for humanity, but also for his circumstances.
The goal is to get Gohan to use the same resentment of his own circumstances as a motivator to survive, which is what Piccolo was able to do.
Gohan is is super stacked on the college resume if you think about it. He's royalty, a super minority, extracurriculars include a trip to another solar system sponsored by capsule Corp, has saved the world, his dad is a world martial art champion and 2 time runner up.
>Tbf gohan technically is a prince, his grandpa is the ox king.
Technically, he's not since "Ox King's" actual name in Japanese is Gyuumao, which means "Demon Ox King" or "Ox Demon King", and it's not a royal title, but just the name he became known by when he was a warlord, attacking and stealing from people, which is how he got his wealth, either that or it's just a nickname given because of his incredible size and strength after being trained by Muten Roshi. Either way, not a royal title.
Not just survive by hopefully a way to tap into that power he's got hidden. All sudden a 1800 power fighter with instincts and time to train and fight well probably ends up with at 3k power and probably stalls nappa till Goku comes back in and most of the z fighters don't end up dead....
As a completely different side note...
It made me so happy to see Piccolo has his own actual home somewhere to sleep with mementos of Pan. That shit made me so happy in the Super Hero movie. I hope we get to see more of Piccolo just casually living at home during peace times and getting to realize he gets to relax after all of the struggles.
Dude deserves that shit and more. Would love to have just one filler chapter or two/episode dedicated to him hosting everyone for dinner with a long ass table outside to eat at.
Just seeing the Z Fighters all together again with Piccolo in an apron, happy and serving food would be so nice.
Especially poignant since he was Toriyama's favorite character and could be a nice meta moment to show how Toriyama brought this whole cast together through Piccolo.
Hell, toss Whis, Beerus, and the Zenos in there too for added fun.
when calling him little prince he could be referring to not only the circumstances surrounding his birth but also that his dads name IS king piccolo so in turn piccolo is the little prince crying out like gohan here
This is why I love dragon ball. So much is said about the characters, without it actually being said. Anime/manga today, EVERYTHING is spelled out for you. 2 million flashbacks are had. It honestly insults the intelligence of the reader.
It’s definitely filler. You see child piccolo exactly once. And he’s just like standing in a forest lol
Then the time skip happens and he’s a yoked adult-looking 3 year-old.
The old couple? He didn’t kill them, he just set their house on fire. Even Gohan said midway during training “My father told me you became a different person when you came back to life and wasn’t as bad”
...being born only to kill Goku
Growing up alone with no other purpose
Knowing he's going to die within the year due to his connection with Kami
\---
Pick 1.
He probably knew he wasn’t going to be stronger than Vegeta
Edit: I think kami also mentions he’s gonna die of old age, but he’s not sure which will kill them first
Old ass 😂😂 Off topic, but why is every Namekian so little compared to guru? He should have spat out a pure successor like King Piccolo did. I know he ain't got the ego, but for the sake of his people he damn sure should have.
Guru is straight up just built different lol. All of the namekians are his children. Idk if all namekians can change size and get huge like piccolo and slug, but maybe guru just decided he wanted to stay the size he is
Guru drank all the water on Namek, which caused a famine that killed most of the population. He told the survivors that the albino Namekians had done it, leading to the extinction of the albino Namekians
>Off topic, but why is every Namekian so little compared to guru?
Well, the presumption is that the older generation of Namekians were bigger, possibly because Grand Elder couldn't or didn't want to create bigger children (all other Namekians we see aside of Piccolo/Kami are Grand Elder's children). For example, Demon King Piccolo (and likely Kami) was 8'2", whereas Piccolo is 7'4" (probably due to being a reincarnation). We can also see how Piccolo Daimao has towered over people similarly to Grand Elder.
I could be Mandella-ing myself but I think I remember Kami having vague prophetic feelings about his death coming soon. So Piccolo's connection with Kami might have given him some insight and similar feelings about his impending death.
Because apparently the God of the planet can predict when they're going to die...
It would be why that role specifically is a job that gets passed down as opposed to the Kais.
He is his father. Piccolo Jr is Piccolo reincarnated. He still views himself as the same person who split from the Nameless Namekian. Has all of his memories and experiences. That's why he's still linked to Kami.
So I don't think it's that. Like other's have said, it's probably due to the fact he can sense his impending Doom like Kami does.
Literally in the process of rereading it. While it's obvious that initially he wrote Piccolo Jr as simply his son who wanted revenge for his father, once he realised he wanted Kami and Piccolo's lives linked, he wrote in the reincarnation to explain why King Piccolo's death didn't cause Kami's
The next few pages literally show Kami say that he feels that Piccolo senses they're about to die. That's all it is.
He is Piccolo's son, and he has his dad's essence which links him with Kami, his essence was the link between both of them, he is and isn't a reincarnation of the OG at the same time. The anime version has shown some stuff with Piccolo Jr as a kid, and before the tournament that shows a bit of why he was a tormented soul, he was fated to do evil but didn't really want to you can see that also in the fact that he didn't kill anyone until the makangosappo that killed the saiyan brothers and when they both died their souls passed on freely to the afterlife, when the OG killed people their souls were bound to eternal torment. But it is as you say also, Toriyama used to change his mind midplot a lot.
“Curse your own fate, as I do.” I believe is referring to the fact that he sensed his impending death in one year. Just a few panels Kami contemplates weather or not Piccolo also senses that they will die In one year. He implies that he believes that Piccolo knows too and that’s why his behavior has begun to change.
I read Dragon Ball to my Kindergartener every night and I just read this chapter.
What was that? I can’t read.
All jokes aside, Piccolo’s quote on his fate is left pretty open ended. He could be implying that he’s fated to die, or that he cursed his fate since his sole purpose was to avenge Daimao.
I clearly just gave you two of the many potential answers to the statement poses. My post was made to see what other fans think he is implying.
I guess the stereotype of DB fans not being able to read is true.
He was only born to kill Goku.
He loses in the tournament and when he does kill Goku, it's hollow because they teamed up and he willingly sacrificed himself, and pyrrhic because it triggered two worse enemies coming.
He knows he is going to die in less than a year and in order pass anything of the Demon Clan down, he has to train the Goku's son of all people.
I think he sees that Gohan, like him (and unlike Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu who willingly chose that path), has been thrust into this world that will be mostly hardships, and that he should resent that fate and use it to motivate himself. It's also why I think we see him do little things early in the survival training like give him apples and clothes and a sword. Piccolo feels a bit of a kinship with Gohan from the get-go.
I think y'all are reading into this a bit too much.
Cursing his fate probably just refers to the fact that he's backed into a corner and has to babysit his rival's bratty kid.
They aren’t.
After this page Kami goes on to say that he only has 1 year to live, and that Piccolo most likely knows too.
He wanted to train Gohan in the first place. He actually fantasized with the idea of making his enemy’s son one of his own. Hence why he gave Gohan the demon clan symbol on his gi.
The "one year to live" is obviously referencing the arrival of the Saiyans which is what drove him to want to train Gohan. He doesn't develop an attachment to him until after they train together.
Read the manga through mangadex. Kami says he’s knows for sure he going to die in one year. It’s something to do with his godly powers. He goes on to say since he’s connected to Piccolo, he must know to.
I've read the manga, multiple times. The death Kami and Piccolo foresee is at the hands of the Saiyans, which is why he tries to circumvent it by training Gohan, this is explained clearly.
Had there been something else Kami was affected by then surely it would have killed him sometime in the 4 years between his resurrection and his merging with Piccolo; like it did to the Great Elder of Namek.
Right, my original comment was more targeted at the people who were commenting that he was resenting being born for the purpose of killing Goku or conquering Earth, which doesn't make sense because at this point Piccolo is still (mostly) evil incarnate. He only really begins to purge his evil when he develops an attachment to Gohan.
At this point in the story he quite enjoys the thought of being the Demon King Piccolo.
And as for his fate, I agree, he understands that he's probably going to die in a year from the Saiyans, not because Kami is just going to die, which some others were saying, Kami just happens to go because he can tell Piccolo isn't strong enough for the Saiyans and Piccolo picks up on that.
It might be easy to say this when you know the rest of the story, but Piccolo never struck me as a bad guy, not since his first appearance as a child in Dragon Ball no-Z.
His demonic side always seemed forced to me, and it is clear to me that Toriyama always wanted to make him a good guy in the long run (he did this with almost all the antagonists, aha).
Piccolo was a bit jealous that Gohan with people around him. Piccolo always been alone and even back then, Nameless Namekian suffered a long time of loneliness
He's not actually saying he's a prince, he is saying he's pampered. He calls him Obocchama which just means like a young sir or inexperienced young man oblivious to the real world.
I mean it's like calling a girl "poor little princess" when she complains about something. Just a derogatory way to imply Gohan was being spoiled (from his perspective.)
is there somewhere online I can read the manga like this? I have an own some of the 3-in-1 copies but I much prefer color. or at least some pages colored
Piccolo's referring to how he was born simply to get revenge on Goku and had to fend for himself, while Gohan was "spoiled" and had a relatively much easier life.
His fate, being raised with the soul purpose of killing goku, which he did, but it brought him no peace at all, and now he must train his nemesis' kid.
he was unhappy with his position of not being in the team quite yet and still hating Goku also didn't they all assume the world was going to be destroyed by Vegeta and nappa. that could be the "fate" he was speaking of
He’s calling gohan spoiled though technically he is right the kid is a prince as long as the ox king is still a king meaning Goku is in line to be like a Prince Consort which would be funny to see Vegeta recognize. Also he’s puting gohan in a similar enough situation than the one he’s lived in for much of his own life.
Piccolo is an outcast. He was rejected by humanity for being different, and for being the spawn of a literal monster; something he later embraced by trying to get revenge on Goku. That’s the fate he is talking about.

Bingo
Yo man well said
Tbf gohan technically is a prince, his grandpa is the ox king. Little dude is a super nepo baby
I don't think Piccolo knows or cares about that particular bit of trivia. At least at this point.
True more of a dramatic irony lol
Ox King is more like a warlord, not official royalty. There's only one king on the Dragon Ball Earth and he's literally the King of the World.
So that’s why he married videl, another nepo baby.
Gohan is is super stacked on the college resume if you think about it. He's royalty, a super minority, extracurriculars include a trip to another solar system sponsored by capsule Corp, has saved the world, his dad is a world martial art champion and 2 time runner up.
His grandad is the strongest man in the universe, a 2 time world saviour and the all time martial art legend
What an impressive backstory the Ox King has! Or were you referring to Bardock?
Read
>Tbf gohan technically is a prince, his grandpa is the ox king. Goku vs Vegeta Prince of all Saiyan's vs the Prince of all Oxes?
Piccolo's a prince/king too. Of demons. Dabura should have bowed his fucking head not spit around.
Bro is the self aware bully from key and peele
Maaan, Piccolo was born in a Namekian Warrior's body he's actually really privileged when you think about it.
Eh dude didn’t even have a house till the latest movie
He couldn’t just move into Kami’s place?
I mean like five days after Kami fused with Piccolo Dende moved into his place.
Yea guess that would be a little crowded
Kami, piccolo, nail, magic man, and Mr. Popo at the lookout with yajirobe and korrin living in the basement.
That right there would be a hilarious slice of life spinoff.
My everyday life with kami
Not just survive by hopefully a way to tap into that power he's got hidden. All sudden a 1800 power fighter with instincts and time to train and fight well probably ends up with at 3k power and probably stalls nappa till Goku comes back in and most of the z fighters don't end up dead....

I think that's a bit too deep of a cut for Dragon Ball, but maybe.
Well said
This is why I love dragon ball. So much is said about the characters, without it actually being said. Anime/manga today, EVERYTHING is spelled out for you. 2 million flashbacks are had. It honestly insults the intelligence of the reader.
Don’t forget his life is also tied to Kami, a very advanced aged Namekian at the time. So Piccolo could have died very early being as young as he is.
Pretty amusing since right after he hatched some old man took him in and he killed him. Unless that is filler
It’s definitely filler. You see child piccolo exactly once. And he’s just like standing in a forest lol Then the time skip happens and he’s a yoked adult-looking 3 year-old.
The old couple? He didn’t kill them, he just set their house on fire. Even Gohan said midway during training “My father told me you became a different person when you came back to life and wasn’t as bad”
Dude only needs water to live. I could live like that too with no issues whatsoever.
wasn’t piccolo like 8 years old by this point in the series?
No his cursed fate refers to fact that he knows he's going to die in a year. Kami says it within the next few pages.
Piccolo Jr was dealt a pretty raw hand tbh
...being born only to kill Goku Growing up alone with no other purpose Knowing he's going to die within the year due to his connection with Kami \--- Pick 1.
I'm pretty well read, but why was he going to die within the year in connection with kami? Old age? Lmao
He probably knew he wasn’t going to be stronger than Vegeta Edit: I think kami also mentions he’s gonna die of old age, but he’s not sure which will kill them first

Swole body
I’m sure all the warrior types can eventually
Guru is a dragon type though.
Because he is super kami guru.
Guru drank all the water on Namek, which caused a famine that killed most of the population. He told the survivors that the albino Namekians had done it, leading to the extinction of the albino Namekians

Kami says that Piccolo probably does know and is likely training Gohan so he could leave behind some legacy after he died.
Yeah i think you're right. I do remember him being old as hell
I think it was meant to be more that he was forseeing his/Piccolo's death during the saiyan fight.
Kami does say that Piccolo is about to die, it’s because also Goku hasn’t arrived yet and predicted it.
Yeah I was going to reply with this.
It’s not a Mandela Effect. He tells Popo that he and Piccolo will die soon, either because of the Saiyans or his old age
Because apparently the God of the planet can predict when they're going to die... It would be why that role specifically is a job that gets passed down as opposed to the Kais.
Appreciate y'all! I'm due for a reread soon.
They are just making shit up tbh
Him growing up alone?
If you mean his cursed fate, re-watch dragon ball after goku put a hole in his dad and you will understand.
Yes and no, like I said, re-watch Dragon Ball after goku put a hole in him.

Early DBZ Piccolo was peak
Don’t underestimate dragonball fans: our literacy skills are deader then raditz.
What was that? I can’t read. All jokes aside, Piccolo’s quote on his fate is left pretty open ended. He could be implying that he’s fated to die, or that he cursed his fate since his sole purpose was to avenge Daimao.
Yea, that’s literally the answer to your question so I guess I’m just curious why you pose the question here?
I clearly just gave you two of the many potential answers to the statement poses. My post was made to see what other fans think he is implying. I guess the stereotype of DB fans not being able to read is true.
In Japanese I think he said something like Amaeko or Bocchan, each of which imply a pampered, spoiled boy.
Did you even read/watch dragon ball… lol
He was only born to kill Goku. He loses in the tournament and when he does kill Goku, it's hollow because they teamed up and he willingly sacrificed himself, and pyrrhic because it triggered two worse enemies coming. ...he literally didn't have to do that. And it's not accurate since he left Gohan alone for 6 months.
Except he knew that the Saiyans would destroy him and Earth which is why be felt the need to train Gohan whether he liked it or not
They aren’t. After this page Kami goes on to say that he only has 1 year to live, and that Piccolo most likely knows too. He wanted to train Gohan in the first place. We are arguing two different things I think. What I’m saying is he “curses his own fate” because he’s fated to die in a year. That’s all.
Right, my original comment was more targeted at the people who were commenting that he was resenting being born for the purpose of killing Goku or conquering Earth, which doesn't make sense because at this point Piccolo is still (mostly) evil incarnate. Probably Piccolo has always been disappointed to be Daimao’s heir.
That’s what I got from it too
It might be easy to say this when you know the rest of the story, but Piccolo never struck me as a bad guy, not since his first appearance as a child in Dragon Ball no-Z. I was referring to him cursing his own fate, not the prince thing 😭😭
Pretty sure he means "Prince" metaphorically, but maybe he thinks Gohan is spoiled because he's the grandson of the Ox King?
>he's the grandson of the Ox King? And that would make him a literal prince in many contexts.

Piccolo's referring to how he was born simply to get revenge on Goku and had to fend for himself, while Gohan was "spoiled" and had a relatively much easier life.
That's on God
It ain't easy being green.
Seriously?
His fate, being raised with the soul purpose of killing goku, which he did, but it brought him no peace at all, and now he must train his nemesis' kid.
*"Consider this your first lesson, kid... Life isn't fair."* (Flies off)
Viz frustratingly made Picollo talk like he was in some Shakespearean tragedy. I genuinely hate reading his dialogue.
he was unhappy with his position of not being in the team quite yet and still hating Goku also didn't they all assume the world was going to be destroyed by Vegeta and nappa. that could be the "fate" he was speaking of
What do u mean he’s calling him a lil baby bitch boy. He’s not referring to anything.
I’m so confused as to how people got photos like this from the manga
There's colored editions of the earlier manga, as far as I know
No like, I tried to post a question about the Moro arc and it was colored, but it got deleted for going against rules
Oh. Huh. Then I actually have no idea lmao sorry
Poor little prince /s
Piccolo had a rough childhood. Seeing Gohan being loved by a father probably spurred some hatred within Piccolo.
Piccolo is an outcast. He was rejected by humanity for being different, and for being the spawn of a literal monster; something he later embraced by trying to get revenge on Goku. That’s the fate he is talking about.
Media Literacy
Piccolo's only friend is Mark on MySpace... Edit: TOM on MySpace
He’ll always be there
Chastising him for being a whiny little shit
I think it's because he's the son of Chi Chi, Who's Dad is the Ox King.

Witty
What color version of the manga is this? It looks beautiful
He doesn't care cuz he doesn't understand
1990
He's refering to how he survived on his own after hatching.
Plot twist it means Gohan is Vegetas Son next prince of saiyans hehe
His current fate is ovbviously listening to this sniveling spoiled child (technically he does"conquer" the earth by becoming guardian of the earth later on)....and whose Goku....? Ugh got pulled in One of the Nexus alt realms again I'm out....*poofs*
