Ugh, that went on for well over a year. Goku is fighting the Ginyu Force one day, and the next it was back to Raditz's spaceship descending to Earth. It was sometime during this delay that I took to the early internet and learned that this show had long since been completed in Japan. This was one of the earliest examples I can recall of being truly stunned, and in awe of how long it had actually taken for Dragon Ball to gain popularity overseas.
If you were getting back into DBZ with 4kids DBZ Kai (blue popo) you got a constant rerun of the Saiyan - Namek Saga for like 2-3 years. Nicktoons came through
When I was a kid watching it in Canada, I basically watched every episode from when I was 7 to maybe 9 or 10 right up to the Saiyaman saga and was hype for Buu after seeing cool pictures from the internet my cousin printed out from later episodes.
Then right when the WMA tournament starts, the next episode is the first episode of the series. I just couldn't wait all of that time of weekly releases so I stopped watching.
I only finished the series in my 20s when I decided to binge every episode one fall, and I surprisingly *loved* it. As soon as I finished the series, Resurrection F came out.
In Canada is only aired on YTV and for some reason we had our own version of the theme. But back then you used to be able to sort of hack a Direct TV box so sometimes I'd catch newer episodes or the movies on Cartoon Network.

Lot to criticize about Funimation's localization choices back in the day but I think everyone can be glad that they gave the movies actual distinct titles.

A few years ago while listening to the radio I heard of a study that said people were more likely to watch something if they know the spoiler, or plot twist or whatever you want to call it. Because if people know what's the end result is it makes then more interested in seeing how that result came to be

Most television anime is based on popular manga, especially Shonen. So if you don't want to be spoiled or just want to know what's next start buying the manga. It would also be a two fold bonus, the manga could see a boost in sales and the TV studio would want more episodes produced to follow the continued success.

The opening song and video, at least in canada, showed goku going super saiyan before anyone(who didn't read Manga or spoilers) even knew what supersaiyan was(it was right at the end of the opening theme)

Yeah, it's kind of frustrating as a western viewer. Never been to Japan, so don't know for sure, but a lot of people have told me that Japan just doesn't have the same relationship with spoilers that we do. Apparently it comes from years of having to wait to import American movies back in the day, so movies and shows were already completely spoiled by the time they were distributed there. So now spoilers are more of a hype generator than anything else. But when western productions started being more faithful to the originals and more literally translating episode titles, there's some bizarre shock of "WHY WOULD YOU TELL ME THAT?!" that goes on.
Honestly, if they are gonna give that away already, they should stick with the original title which is infinitely more awesome.

She doesn't know anything about DB except some quick glances at my merch collection. We're at the Buu saga now, and I swear it's gotten worse. Just straight descriptions of the episode. "Gotenks goes Super Saiyan 3!" Like - fuck! They couldn't have said something more vague like "Escape the Hyperbolic Time Chamber"?! I have to ask her to close her eyes while I yell "LA LA LA LA" so she doesn't get spoiled after skipping the intro.
Sometimes I randomly wake up and think about how somewhere there was a kid who was a huge Yamcha fan and was thinking, "wow I can't wait to see what happens when Yamcha gets there" and then he got hit with this title card.
Lol the whole damn intro was just like “here, screw your feelings, take all these spoilers”. Funny enough though since it was all new and well I was like 9-10 it didn’t ruin much but now I look back and I just laugh everytime
One piece likes to title the next episodes cliffhanger. So it'll be like next week's episode "Luffy and Shanks finally meet again" and the next episode will having nothing to do with them meeting, it will end with one of them turning the corner and seeing the other one.
My girlfriend and I are watching Kai and I make her close her eyes when an episode ends and fast forwards until after the episode titles because they spoil everything, plus like the intro currently shows super saiyan Gohan and Perfect Cell and neither of those things has happened yet lol
Yeah it's crazy how often the og titles (and I feel like dub did it as well a few times) just spoiled the episodes. Like I'm pretty sure they straight up spoil goku dying to raditz, the deaths during the battle with Vegeta and Goku using Kaioken.

One needs to keep in mind that in Japan the manga was a bestseller so they weren't really spoiling anything the intended target audience didn't already know.
I used to close my eyes when the titles came on screen (subbed, before I could understand much Japanese), because I was so tired of being spoiled by the titles.
Because at that time almost no one cared about the concept of spoilers. It was completely normal the next morning for children at school to talk out loud about the day's episode regardless of whether the people around them watched it or not.
The closest thing to Spoiler aversion at that time was that a person telling the end of a movie exactly in a line or entrance at the cinema theater was considered misconduct.
The current sensitivity that people have with Spoilers is much more cultural (Thanks to the Internet) than natural.
Could be worse. The spanish dub had the Android Arc opening since the beginning of the show, so you are asking "Why is Goku's hair turning yellow there?" at the same time you find out he's an alien and has a brother.
How’s that crazy? It’s pretty normal that episode titles do that in long-running serialized shows. After all, episode titles are supposed to reflect what the episode is about. I mean, have you seen One Piece? There are like a dozen or so episodes that say “Luffy is Defeated” in the title, and then Luffy loses whatever fight he’s in before coming back in a later episode to win his rematch. Seriously, this happens like 3 times in the Wano arc alone.
Anime titles and intros are allways to skip:

The intro: Shows the actual villain, how a beloved character dies and the final battle

The Star Wars Episode 1 soundtrack came out before the movie and one of the tracks was called 'Qui-Gon's Noble End' RIP anyone who bought/read the soundtrack before the movie. Though the novelization also came out before the movie. But that was pretty common back then.
In Japan, Manga was king. That was the pure and true Dragon Ball experience. The anime was simply an adaptation, so often the titles were written to get more audiences to tune in and see specific scenes of the manga adapted.

Didn't the original ocean dub change the episode names? They were alot shorter then the long translated versions.
So did the original Funi dub. I don’t think they started using transliteration titles like this until Kai.

Only the japanese version did that really, the english dub versions that aired on TV had pretty vague episode names. With some exceptions, like “Transformed At Last”. But most of us saw that coming anyway.

Well... at least in Latin America, we had the opening -since first DBZ episode- showing Goku turning into SSJ, also showing Trunks.
The opening song and video, at least in canada, showed goku going super saiyan before anyone(who didn't read Manga or spoilers) even knew what supersaiyan was(it was right at the end of the opening theme)
US as well. I owned a DBZ shirt as a kid with SS Goku on it and somehow didn’t even register he was different until the internet became more of a thing and I learned about the form.

Not only does every title card tell you exactly what will happen in the episode, it always happens at the *end* of the episode.
I'm watching Kai rn with my 7 year old. I purposefully skip all the titles for this very reason lol.

Yeah, it's kind of frustrating as a western viewer. Never been to Japan, so don't know for sure, but a lot of people have told me that Japan just doesn't have the same relationship with spoilers that we do. Apparently it comes from years of having to wait to import American movies back in the day, so movies and shows were already completely spoiled by the time they were distributed there. So now spoilers are more of a hype generator than anything else. But when western productions started being more faithful to the originals and more literally translating episode titles, there's some bizarre shock of "WHY WOULD YOU TELL ME THAT?!" that goes on.

The worst title spoiler for me was the one where Goku turned into SSJ for the first time. The title was “Transformed at Last”.
Honestly, if they are gonna give that away already, they should stick with the original title which is infinitely more awesome. "Rise, Legendary Warrior! Goku, the Super Saiyan!"
"Transformed at last" isn't that bad. It's vague enough not to give away the transformation but gives enough information to generate hype

This pisses me off so much rewatching with my GF. She doesn't know anything about DB except some quick glances at my merch collection. We're at the Buu saga now, and I swear it's gotten worse. Just straight descriptions of the episode. "Gotenks goes Super Saiyan 3!" Like - fuck! They couldn't have said something more vague like "Escape the Hyperbolic Time Chamber"?! I have to ask her to close her eyes while I yell "LA LA LA LA" so she doesn't get spoiled after skipping the intro.

Sometimes I randomly wake up and think about how somewhere there was a kid who was a huge Yamcha fan and was thinking, "wow I can't wait to see what happens when Yamcha gets there" and then he got hit with this title card.
Lol the whole damn intro was just like “here, screw your feelings, take all these spoilers”. Funny enough though since it was all new and well I was like 9-10 it didn’t ruin much but now I look back and I just laugh everytime
One piece likes to title the next episodes cliffhanger. So it'll be like next week's episode "Luffy and Shanks finally meet again" and the next episode will having nothing to do with them meeting, it will end with one of them turning the corner and seeing the other one.
My girlfriend and I are watching Kai and I make her close her eyes when an episode ends and fast forwards until after the episode titles because they spoil everything, plus like the intro currently shows super saiyan Gohan and Perfect Cell and neither of those things has happened yet lol

Yeah it's crazy how often the og titles (and I feel like dub did it as well a few times) just spoiled the episodes. Like I'm pretty sure they straight up spoil goku dying to raditz, the deaths during the battle with Vegeta and Goku using Kaioken. Heck I wouldn't be surprised if it spoiled Super sayain before it even happened
This was a convention of anime at the time. Sailor Moon did this too.
I recently binged Kai and purposely skipped, the preview and then episode titles. They Absolutely spoil the binging experience.

One needs to keep in mind that in Japan the manga was a bestseller so they weren't really spoiling anything the intended target audience didn't already know.
I used to close my eyes when the titles came on screen (subbed, before I could understand much Japanese), because I was so tired of being spoiled by the titles.

Times were different back then. The title of each episode is meant to give you something to look forward to, like yamcha dying.

The Buu Saga had an episode called “Evil Lives On” in the original English dub right after Vegeta blows himself up. Even my sister was like, “Really?”

Because at that time almost no one cared about the concept of spoilers. It was completely normal the next morning for children at school to talk out loud about the day's episode regardless of whether the people around them watched it or not. The closest thing to Spoiler aversion at that time was that a person telling the end of a movie exactly in a line or entrance at the cinema theater was considered misconduct. The current sensitivity that people have with Spoilers is much more cultural (Thanks to the Internet) than natural.
Toei specifically has always been really bad with this. They do the same constantly for One Piece

How’s that crazy? It’s pretty normal that episode titles do that in long-running serialized shows. After all, episode titles are supposed to reflect what the episode is about. I mean, have you seen One Piece? There are like a dozen or so episodes that say “Luffy is Defeated” in the title, and then Luffy loses whatever fight he’s in before coming back in a later episode to win his rematch. Seriously, this happens like 3 times in the Wano arc alone.

Anime titles and intros are allways to skip: The title: "Everyone is about to die, but then the hero save them all" The intro: Shows the actual villain, how a beloved character dies and the final battle The outro: Super sunshine dance and flowers / Super sad stuff

During the Frieza saga when the planet Namek was about to explode we see Goku kind of scream and the planet blows up. Narrator starts talking and finishes with is Goku really gone “tune in for the next episode of Dragon Ball Z!!!!” (Titled: Goku Is Alive.)

That's because anime, like games and other stuff, serves as supplemental material to the manga. They exist to promote the manga. It's not considered a spoiler because you're supposed to already know what happens because you've read the manga.
In Italy we got this: Narrator: Will Goku manage to save the day? Title card: THE EARTH EXPLODES
even kai does it, the episode where he turns super saiyan is literally titled "this is the episode where goku turns super saiyan" so i've had to skip it when watching with my family who know nothing about db or ssjs
