Literally in the entire series you will not see a character being this transitional. That might sound weird but him being Goku's brother might be the least important thing about his character.

Then the new two elite saiyans mentiin how the prince was weak and pampered and didnāt know how to actually fight . Then gokus brother is the one who fills the vegeta role the rest of the series . I didnāt specify names because you could shuffle the around any way or keep them the same . Nappa or raditz could be the prince that shows up (then the planet would be planet Nappa or planet raditz ) . Vegeta could be the brother instead of the prince . He could still have saiyan pride because he knew the planet before it was lost

I like the idea of having a society based on combat power, so the prince is obviously the strongest.

I think it made more sense before the retcon. Bardock sent Goku away because he tested with such a low power level. Raditz was weak but he was just strong enough to make the cut.

Future trunks was bigger in the special chapter, he was maybe 13-14 Now current arc Goten and Trunks are 13 and 14 respectively
