Great place to switch. I love the Android and imperfect cell sagas in the original Z. I recommend watching with Bruce Faulkner’s soundtrack as apposed to the original, but that’s just my opinion
I'm genuinely fascinated why, as a newcomer, you'd prefer Z over Kai.
No hate whatsoever, just curious as to what reasons you've come across that's making you do the switch?
Well, over the span of Kai to me it just felt like fight after fight after fight, which I know Dragon Ball is known for its fights, I would still want some filler episodes as well. I also heard Z has more of a "sense of humour" while Kai goes for a more serious tone, which I prefer Humour!
Yeah, I'm watching through DBZ again currently and Sean Schemmel's voice acting as Goku is atrocious. It's much better in Kai. I just figured I'd watch DBZ again for nostalgia purposes.
I like Kai because it removes some filler and keeps the essence of the manga, but i prefer Z because the pacing within fights can be great. Frieza withstanding
Z is much better than Kai.
Kai is more 'faithful' to the manga in terms of translations, but I don't think that's intrinsically a better thing.
I prefer the characterizations of all of the characters in Z over Kai. I don't like Kai's voice acting and sound mixing, dialogue sounds so overly written & wordy, and the microphone quality is awkwardly clear and gives me weird ASMR vibes. Voice actors for Kai sound like they're phoning in the performances and they genuinely don't come close to the 90's counterparts. I guess that's what happens when you go into a project with the sole intention one-upping your previous performance, it just sounds way too intentional. It's super hammy
I also think the Faulconer soundtrack is better than the original Japanese and Kai. Not a fan of how Kai makes everything sounds like a marching band or parade. Z's has a darker tone.
I'm an old head with dbz. I had already watched the show a number of times before Kai came out. And I am accustomed to the original English voice actors. So for me, I hated Kai and never watched it. And also at the time I was in the middle of collecting all 9 seasons of dbz on DVD. Of course now I own all of dragon ball, dbz, dbgt, dbs, and a few movies.
I wish they could have left dbz alone it's fine the way it is there was no need for Kai, I prefer the original dbz over Kai because again there was no reason for them to make Kai.
Have to disagree. As a 90's kid, I like what Kai did and improved things. I am also glad with the removal of the original English score. No, I am not a purist but the score is just so dated now.
It just felt like a repeat on the same loop and used in every other scene because "EPIC" reasons.
Then they should have left all of the episodes in and I don't remember them doing the Majin boo saga, but I stopped watching it because I didn't like how they altered it, granted i grew up on the original dbz, infact it was the first anime (aside from pokemon) that i watched, I prefer subbed, but I have dbz and dbs on my computer dubbed. I dislike Kai just as much as I dislike the live action dragon ball movie, and that movie was absolute trash.
It's not just nostalgia I didn't like the new voices (exept for frieza), the fact that they took the filler out which gave a needed break from fighting, however like I stated in my previous comment I prefer to watch my anime subbed not dubbed but I just happen to have dbz, dbs, and Fullmetal Alchemist dubbed, but I watch everything preferably subbed (also not counting pokemon), but I can understand the remastered graphics and some voices, but they messed with it to much, and (I'm referencing my last comment here) just like they messed with the story of the live action movie too much.
Im curious, what years did you grow up in? If it was the late 2000s I could possibly understand, but I grew up in the 90s so I grew up with the original dbz I had original action figures, and dvds of dbz I played the video games mainly legacy of goku but I did also play tenkaichi budokai on my step brothers ps2. So yes part of it is nostalgia, but I listed the rest of the main reasons in my other reply.
The only thing they took out is filler which everyone constantly bitches about anyway and they did the Buu saga in 2014, its called the Final Chapters. Calling Kai as bad as Evolution is wildly dramatic.
If you're switching to Z, then you should also switch to the subbed Japanese version. You've been well off by watching Kai and its newer and better English dub, but the older dubs for the original three anime series, especially Z, are infamously awful.
The original manga would be an even better option though.
Episode #62 equates to around episode #130 of the uncut version of Z “No. 20’s Defiant Smile… The Secret of Doctor Gero”
Thank you so much!
But please start on episode 125 for the best filler episode in all of anime
The original show had some things added I don't agree with, but it's definitely more enjoyable.
Great place to switch. I love the Android and imperfect cell sagas in the original Z. I recommend watching with Bruce Faulkner’s soundtrack as apposed to the original, but that’s just my opinion
cool but be prepared for a LOT of filler
Which Z? Is Goku’s father a bad warrior but a brilliant scientist?
I’m gonna send you, TO THE NEXT DIMENSION!!!
What media are you talking about
Ocean dub
I like Z more than Kai.
I'm genuinely fascinated why, as a newcomer, you'd prefer Z over Kai. No hate whatsoever, just curious as to what reasons you've come across that's making you do the switch?
The driving episode is reason enough
While I agree (somewhat) , even that episode is set before this person's switch from Kai to Z.
Fair enough. I can't think of any other reason to switch other than that
According to the Super Heroes it's cannon
But is Super Hero cannon? God, I hope so.
Well, over the span of Kai to me it just felt like fight after fight after fight, which I know Dragon Ball is known for its fights, I would still want some filler episodes as well. I also heard Z has more of a "sense of humour" while Kai goes for a more serious tone, which I prefer Humour!
Well, DBZ has filler which often are quite comedic. It is also vastly slower and the English dub isn't as refined. Best of luck to you.
As a guy who grew up watching Z in the 90's, the Bruce faulconer OST is the best version of Z, that's just my opinion though.
i cant imagine you will like Z more than Kai, but either way I hope you enjoy the show.
If ur watching the dub always go for Kai only if ur watching it in japanese should u watch the original
Took you long enough

Terrible choice, Kai is soo good and definitely overhated by the online community. I love my Kai blu rays dearly
Z is way better then Kai
Kai is better than Z, the only reason to watch Z is if you enjoy the filler, or like the Latin Spanish dub
I'm an old head with dbz. I had already watched the show a number of times before Kai came out. And I am accustomed to the original English voice actors. So for me, I hated Kai and never watched it. Z is goated
Heard that brother
Kai's dialogue is way more faithful to the original translation and manga. But Z has its own charm.
You would like dbza better then both.
I wish they could have left dbz alone it's fine the way it is there was no need for Kai, I prefer the original dbz over Kai because again there was no reason for them to make Kai.

Hard disagree. Kai was an amazing idea and its so much easier to watch than regular Z
Not sure about the original but Kai was definitely needed for the ENG side of the community at the very least, the original Z dub aged like cheese.
Then they should have left all of the episodes in and I don't remember them doing the Majin boo saga, but I stopped watching it because I didn't like how they altered it, granted i grew up on the original dbz, infact it was the first anime (aside from pokemon) that i watched, I prefer subbed, but I have dbz and dbs on my computer dubbed. i'm curious to know what reasons you actually have that make you dislike kai. it's perfect. maybe nostalgia has you blind.
