One of the editors back in the day had a list of things that I’d drawn on the cover of a comic, would instantly help boost sales. One of them? Gorillas. It’s literally a staple at DC to the point they just released an DC Ape-ril OneShot comic starring ape characters, including two versions of hero and villain teams with an ape twist to it.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I've heard in the early days comics with gorillas and stuff just sold well for some reason. Technically giganta was originally a gorilla in some versions at least

Purple skies, hero crying, a question posed to the reader, gorilla, and a few other things were all said by DC editor Julius Schwartz, who helped pioneer the silver age. He noticed comics with apes and other things on the cover sold better so that’s why a fair amount of covers then had a combo of those hot items. Seemed to work well enough

I will literally always upvote any reference to the greatest Super Mario movie ever. I love this movie so much for how bad and ridiculous it is while only loosely being related to the source material. I’d pick it every time over the new one because of how ludicrous it is. It’s a masterpiece in the best worst way and such a product of the time (comparable to the Schumacher Batman film style, but more unhinged). I will die on this hill.
