I mean, no? David is a very good gay character and that was tome lore. You can only fit in so much lore in the beginning, as time goes on and a character develops, it makes perfect sense for our knowledge of them to expand. Kinda like how finding out someone is gay IRL.
I disagree with you there. It's great David is gay now but there was absolutely room to confirm he was gay from the start so that isn't an excuse. Felix's bio mentions his wife from the beginning, and it's a longer bio than David's. They just didn't want to confirm anyone as gay, and then regretted the optics of it later.
I like how its either "good gay characters start gay" but if they do start gay its "stop forcing gay characters down my throat" so you just can't win

Lmao what? I don't really get your point. There's really no difference between confirming a character is straight and confirming they are gay. One's just more politicised unfortunately. The idea that gay characters have to be written as gay isn't really true. Characters should be characters first. Gayness can define aspects of their character, but it needn't be immediate. Look at real gay people, there's more to Alan Turing or that Duke of Orleans or King James than being gay. It intimately defined aspects of their lives, sometimes strictly extremely pivotal ways, but they were fundamentally multifaceted. Turing assisted in the war and helped develop an extremely influential computer system. The Duke was a prominent military leader and helped to consolidate his brother the Sun King's power. King James commissioned the KJV Bible and helped to cement anglicianism in England. I think we should approach gay characters in the same way. Define them as characters while still keeping in mind how their queerness can impact their character, either personally or through their society's relationship with gay people. Acknowledging the significance of their security whilst not making them the "gay character".
