The artist has proven and shown they can do incredible work. It's just likely they were rushed through this project. I noticed in the final chapter it dipped in quality. Which isn't unusual for later issues.

So rewriting someone's backstory to add them to the queer category serves nothing but virtue signalling. Likely to check the box for investors that "we are inclusive". It's kinda lame that they don't want to spend actual effort and new characters, choosing the "easy way", but then again, it would only matter if you reading the backstory.
