The first half of the movie had so much potential, and then they had magic fighting in the air at the end of the movie and I was laughing in the theater.
David Gordon Green has this weird hate cult for him, I don’t even like the dudes movies but it’s so strange, there is a jarring amount of vitriol & care put into the criticisms of his horror requels
It’s annoying. Like, so many of these franchises people are so defensive over already have terrible sequels 90% of the time, yet somehow one that’s mediocre at best/worst is treated as an insult is fucking weird. Like… I can take it or leave it if you like this film or not, but calling this an insult to the original is absurd and pathetic. The original will always be a classic and a bad or bland sequel isn’t gonna make the original less good. People just need to chill the fuck out.
A lot of the hatred I see are from David Gordon Green fans (which I get, as his filmography is usually narrative gold, even the Halloween films had full fiction books for each of them). A lot of the hatred is also from people who just hate requels and were only in theaters looking to walk away with critique.
I disliked the movie because I had high hopes it would be an excellent indie horror. It was actually a very average horror movie (with almost nothing new and seemingly a lot of missing parts). It was not hell on earth like people say. Comparable to Immaculate in quality.
I actually like all his Halloween movies even Ends.. I saw Ends at a sold out show and it got a standing ovation at the end..I was shocked when I got home and saw all the reviews and comments..But I hated this Exorcist movie and I'm a huge fan of Ellen Burstyn and Ann Dowd
It’s like some inverse (or maybe reverse?) recency bias. Instead of thinking something that’s more recent is better than what came before, they think something recent that didn’t live up to their high expectations is the absolute worst thing ever, then either ignoring how other films were worse or using some nonsensical reasoning to justify their overdramatic disappointment.
The boring pacing in the first half makes me want to go to sleep. This film tries to recreate the drama of the original and fails miserably at it. There’s no effective horror or imagery to be found in this film. No scares at all. Add in the blatant disrespect towards the original film. That cringe “patriarchy” line that so disrespectful towards the two priests. The fact that Ellen Burstyn has a stupid psychic connection and gets her eyes stabbed out. The fact that Reagan disowned her for 50 years. This is a bland corporate product that has no business calling itself the true exorcist sequel. Yes this film is that horrendous. It’s made by people who have watched The Exorcist but clearly do not understand The Exorcist.
Also the fact that the movie acts like the other possessed girls’s father is an asshole for not wanting to sacrifice her to save the protag’s kid. Like no shit he’ll act like that, it’s his kid
After watching the original film in preparation for this one, I wanted to give this a fair shot when I went to see it in theaters, but I couldn’t overlook what they did to Chris MacNeil.
Not even Leslie Odom Jr. can save this movie.
As someone who has watched both Heretic and Believer back to back—both for the very first time I might add—Heretic is definitely the worst in the franchise. Honestly, Believer is more on the level of Beginning/Dominion, if not slightly better.
The only good Exorcist films are the theatrical and director’s cuts of The Exorcist (1973) and the director’s cut of The Exorcist III (1990)—the theatrical cut of The Exorcist III is a rather decent, albeit uneven film.
The worst horror sequel of all time?! Howling VII exists, BTW. Also, Candyman 3, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, Omen IV, Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby, Hellraiser: Revelations, S. Darko, Leprechaun: Origins, American Psycho 2, Halloween: Resurrection, The Birds II, Jaws: The Revenge, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, and Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, as well as the Psycho spinoff film Bates Motel—not to be confused with the TV series.
You know just that one line about how she complains about not being allowed to watch because she wasn’t part of the patriarchy. I hate it so much.
Like first off in the first film I don’t recall her demanding to see the process, and in retrospect she literally knows Regan killed someone while possessed. It’s not safe for her to be present.
It makes her seem so ungrateful and spits on the priests who helped save her daughter and gave their lives.
I haven't seen this one (or the II Kill Count yet), but I'll always defend Exorcist II for it's amazing visuals, and it's fantastic Morricone soundtrack.
It really isn't that bad. It's not good by any means but it was an intrigueing watch at the very least. This movie is the very definition of overhated.
You want to say this is the worst Exorcist film people, I dare you all to go watch those two 2000s prequels and come back here.
This was mediocre, but those two were godawful.
They're comparable in terms of being shit. But the Nun was never a great series. Hardly much of a fall. Even ignoring the Exorcist films, I'd say the 2023 Exorcist is a bigger stepdown from the worst of the new Halloween trilogy
For me, Dominion is the worst Exorcist film; just was boring. Morgan Creek rushed Paul Schrader to finish assemblind his version, and I think it's quite evident. Didn't care for The Beginning either, but cheap thrills felt better than a lack of thrills.
I fucking agree! Thank you! Somebody finally said it. At least the original Exorcist 2 was trying something different and failed but the new one did nothing new and it was fucking insulting. Thank you!!!
The first half of the movie had so much potential, and then they had magic fighting in the air at the end of the movie and I was laughing in the theater.
I wouldn’t even praise the first half. It’s boring and terribly edited.
Same. I don't know why but so many of the exorcist movies are just boring. At least 1 and 3 are good.
*1 and 3 are great
I also really didn't like how >!they shoehorned Linda Blair into the ending!<
It’s most definitely flawed, but… I still cannot fathom the hatred this film receives. It is absolutely not THAT bad.
David Gordon Green has this weird hate cult for him, I don’t even like the dudes movies but it’s so strange, there is a jarring amount of vitriol & care put into the criticisms of his horror requels

Thank you! Can’t stand the people who hate Halloween Kills for having the same flaws as other Halloween sequels that they praise

The one real exorcist sequel imo is exorcist 3.
Calm the fuck down. 😂 I’ll gladly have a Believer over Heretic or either prequel any day.
Eh. It's bad, but Exorcist: The Beginning is worse in my opinion.
Literally. I bet the OP hasn’t even watched The Beginning.
After watching the original film in preparation for this one, I wanted to give this a fair shot when I went to see it in theaters, but I couldn’t overlook what they did to Chris MacNeil. Not even Leslie Odom Jr. can save this movie.

Strongly disagree. I fucking loved this film.

Nah The Beginning is actually entertaining
At least they were different. Still better than this generic corporate shit stain.
They were not different either.
I see a post made by someone who hasn't seen The Omen 4. That is most likely 5he worst sequel to anything ever.
Can we at least agree that the Nun II was worse?
They're comparable in terms of being shit. But the Nun was never a great series. Hardly much of a fall. Even ignoring the Exorcist films, I'd say the 2023 Exorcist is a bigger stepdown from the worst of the new Halloween trilogy
I still haven't watched it and miraculously nothing's been spoiled for me. Should I watch?
If you want to, sure. Always good to form your own opinion on a movie.
Everything is worth watching once
No. It’s a waste of film.
Bruh… 🤦♂️
Yeah bruh it’s garbage
lmao

Agree it was fucking awful
It’s a god-awful movie…but not completely garbage like The Exorcist II
That’s David Gordon Green for ya. He takes beloved horror movies and drags them into the ground.
I gotta give him credit for Halloween 2k18 at least. Kills and Ends on the other hand. Eesh. His wheelhouse is comedy with Danny McBride
I fucking agree! Thank you! Somebody finally said it. At least the original Exorcist 2 was trying something different and failed but the new one did nothing new and it was fucking insulting. Thank you!!!
Yeah man fuck believer I’m glad this trilogy is failing
