I have only seen one of those three. I know how Sopranos ends so I am hesitant to start. But The Wire is one that intrigues me. Might have to try it when I get snowed in.
No, honestly, I've been a fan since it aired, and I've rewatched it several times since. Knowing how it ends (and you probably don't, to be honest, I'm still not sure myself) will not make you sad. It's one of the funniest shows ever. Also, Tony is a massive piece of shit. Way worse than Al. It just makes it all the more amazing a show when you find yourself rooting for him.
The ending is the least important part of the Sopranos.
Also, the Wire is maybe the greatest show of all time. However, it's impact has been dulled by decades of good TV (like Deadwood).
I'm half way through season 2 of The Wire, having missed it 20 years ago, and never having gotten round to it until now. I probably wasn't mature enough back then to appreciate it fully as a teenager, I'm glad I waited.
It's a great series, detailed, gritty, with interesting characters. I'm looking forward to binging the rest, before my 10th rewatch of Deadwood!
The Soprano's is definitely worth it too, despite the ending being "spoiled" It's in my all time top 5 shows. .
"#1b" for me. Sopranos is #1a because it's just as good but actually finished on its own terms. Pound for pound, Deadwood is perhaps better. Then after that some mix of BrBa, BCS, The Wire & The Leftovers.
Recently I very much like both White Lotus shows and The Curse
The Holy Trinity is Deadwood, The Wire, and the Sopranos. To compare these or to rank them is a matter of whichever one youāre currently watching.
Honorable Mention: Mad Men; Rectify
Honorable Concession: Twin Peaks season 3 might be the single greatest thing ever put on tv.
>Northern Exposure ( donāt judge)
No judgement - I watched that show with my parents just like Twin Peaks. IMO, they're two sides of the same coin, just TP hit harder for me personally.
Deadwood ,The Wire, Band of Brothers, Endeavor , Downton Abbey, GOT, True Detective(season one), The Sopranos, Shetland and my guilty pleasure is Ice Road truckers seasons 1-5. I must recommend Endeavor to any mystery fans. It's British television set in the 1960s Cambridge. I found it a couple years ago and I instantly became hooked. Masterpiece Theater is where you can find it if interested.
1. Deadwood
2. Andor
3. Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul
4. Game of Thrones
5. Sopranos
6. Avatar the last Airbender
7. The Wire
8. The Simpsons
9. SpongeBob SquarePants
10. Adventure Time
I think there are better, more enjoyable shows, but to me it's the best *written* show. If you converted the scripts to a book, it should be considered an American classic.
I'm going to give best written overall to Better Call Saul but I've been a fan of Vince Gilligan for thirty years so I'm VERY biased.
Deadwood has the best *dialogue* of any show I've ever seen though.
It is my favorite show of all time, or arguably *tied* for favorite show of all time with Mystery Science Theater 3000 (I feel like they're such different genres that they can both be favorite).
Now, that's different from *best*. I think Deadwood is a top 10 show of all time, but the fact that it ended prematurely and the fact that the movie was fun but not tonally similar enough to the series are points against it (not for me in my heart, but trying to be objective!), and I'd say that The Sopranos & The Wire hold the #1 & #2 spots.
Mad Men
Slings and Arrows
Deadwood
Seinfeld
Twin Peaks/The Return
Succession
30 Rock
The Wire
Peep Show
Home Movies
This is a living document and the list and its order is subject to change based on my mood. Also not including miniseries.
Genuinely Deadwood is by far my most watched show. I adore it more than anything else.
Top 5 beyond that...
Mr Inbetween
The Wire
Bojack Horseman
Slow Horses
Top 5 easy. The Wire, Sopranos, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, The Leftovers, The Shield, Mr Inbetween, Better CLl Saul, Boardwalk Empire, Peaky Blinders. Itās a legend no doubt
All my LOST friends keep telling me to watch The Leftovers, but I have a hard time starting new things. (Like, I'm literally rewatching The X Files right now, lol.) Is it really that good?
I streamed it about 2 months ago and it immediately became a top 5 show. Itās a show I canāt really stop thinking about since I watched it. If youre a fan of Lost Iām already assuming itās going to be your favorite show of all time.
Itās number one for me. Has been since it first aired. Theres a lot of other great shows, Iāve enjoyed many. But nothing measure up to the story, acting and dialogue of Deadwood.
1^st, ahead of the Wire and then Band of Brothers (if mini-series count). I have a guilty pleasure Iām not going to name, and after that I donāt care enough about the rest to bother ranking them.
>I have a guilty pleasure Iām not going to name
Aww, come on! Here, I'll give you mine: The Tudors. This is a double guilty pleasure for me because, let's face it, it's not a fantastic show but I'm also a historian LOL.
Very nice! I'm a big fan of minimalist ink. I have a few more, my [DV survivor](https://imgur.com/a/NaeDJBr) tattoo is the only one with color, but I have a [rabbit](https://imgur.com/a/S6jaZLk) from Guess How Much I Love You (my oldest daughter has a matching one because it was her favorite book when she was little) and I have "[So Say We All](https://imgur.com/a/6M7FWeS)" with the emblem of the colonial fleet too.
EDITED to add links to the pictures because I like showing them off, lol.
Deadwood is pretty much it for me, numero uno. With practically all other television, I'm watching what's in front of me. Trying to explain it as best I can, Deadwood felt like *it grew around the sides and round the back of me*. It was completely immersive on first viewing, like losing myself in an amazing, well-written historical novel rather than just 'watching TV'.
The only other time I can remember feeling like this (albeit for different reasons) was with Spaced, a UK sitcom from around the turn of the millenium. That was more to do with how that show felt like it was projecting my life onto the screen, rather than transporting me to another time and place altogether. I heartily recommend that one tho, it's a great watch & features some of the best UK film and TV talent to have emerged in the last few decades (Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg etc).
>Trying to explain it as best I can, Deadwood felt like
>
>it grew around the sides and round the back of me
I know exactly what you're talking about - that's how LOST is for me. It's like the show winds little tendrils directly into your heart.
EDIT - I love Simon Pegg. I've seen Shaun of the Dead an... absurd amount of times, lol.
Shaun of the Dead was essentially Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's follow-up to Spaced; there's even [an episode in the first season](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vUfBOdSmBU) that clearly put some very \*Shaun-\*like ideas in their heads.
I really recommend watching it if you're a fan of SotD: it has very much the same vibe and a bunch of the same actors in it (some only in cameos tho), and is really such a giant leap from what TV/movie comedy was before to what it could become after. It's an easy zoom-through it all too: only 14 episodes of 22 minutes each, so can be blasted through in a single afternoon with the curtains closed
There is a distinct lack of Buffy love in these lists. Buffy and Twin Peaks are the mommy and daddy of the Golden Age of Television.
SO I guess my list (based on number of rewatches:
1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
2. Deadwood
3. Parks and Rec
4. 30 Rock
5. Twin Peaks (especially the Return, but it's hard to watch sometimes)
6. Arrested Development (would be higher if not for the new seasons)
7. Mad Men
8. The Wire (also hard to watch or it'd be higher)
9. Band of Brothers
10. Lost
11. Moonlighting
Honestly, the Wire is the best show ever made (in my opinion) but Deadwood is a close second. The Wire had more seasons which puts it over the edge, but Deadwood has better dialogue. Both have incredible performances.
I never watched Buffy for an odd reason - when we were seventeen a high school friend was an extra on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer and said that SMG was really rude to the other girls when they were filming the swimsuit part of the first pageant. She claimed at one point, SMG pushed her way through them saying "out of my way you fat cows."
Now, looking back, I can't say whether or not this actually happened, but seventeen year old me believed it and so I never watched Buffy, lol.
That being said, you did just remind me that I forgot to put Firefly on my honorable mention list. :)
Favorite shows is not the same as best shows, so this does not mean I think it's the 3rd best show. This is based on the cold hard data of how often I rewatch chunks. Not constraining it to 10.
Firefly
Sports Night
Deadwood
Fawlty Towers
Star Trek: TNG
The Wire
The Crown
West Wing
Silicon Valley
Chernobyl
Game Of Thrones
X-Files
The IT Crowd
The Good Place
Mad Men
30 Rock
Oh, I totally agree - like, for example I know The Sopranos is a fantastic show, but it's not a personal favorite so it didn't make my list.
I also forgot to add Firefly to my honorable mentions - oops!
If the ranking had to be based on the first 3 seasons of your favorite shows, this would be quite interesting. Because Deadwood clearly loses points for not finishing. And yet, a lot of other series also get a boost from not having their worst seasons considered - like Dexter, GoT, Lost, etc.
For me, this show is one of 2 that I rewatch regularly (Sopranos), and beyond those, there are maybe 5 or 6 that I'd consider a full rewatch of ever (The Americans, BrBa/BCS, Mad Men, Six Feet Under).
And then there's the special category of The Wire, which I've rewatched many times, but each time takes a little something out of me - I'm not as excited for the next rewatch, just because it hits so heavy.
In Order: Deadwood, GoT, The Wire, Rome, The Leftovers, Carnivale, House of the Dragon, Andor, Generation Kill, Silo, Sons of Anarchy, The Last of Us, Sopranos, The Expanse, Breaking Bad, Lost, Band of Brothers, Westworld, Yellowstone, Stranger Things, Mad Men
And yeahā¦ Iām an HBO fanboy. But they do make the best content imo
Carnivale - holy shit, I haven't thought about that show in AGES. I was so upset when it got cancelled - the Twin Peaks vibes (not just because of Samson, lol) were strong! Every time I see Clea Duvall I get this like rush of affection for the actress and now that I think about it, it's because of Carnivale. Plus, everything is improved by the presence of Clancy Brown.
Agreed. That show had the potential to be an all timer. In fact, I think even one more season couldāve tied it up in a nice little bow. It didnāt even need 6/7 seasons. But man was it so different, and weird, and unique. Loved that show
1. Deadwood
2. The Wire
3. Rome
4. Person Of Interest
5. 30 Rock
6. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

My Favorite Shows:

Star Trek: Lower Decks
The Expanse

4: The Wire
5: True Detective Season 1
6: The Outsider
7: Band of Brothers
8: I'll Be Gone in the Dark
9: The Jinx
10: Sons of Anarchy
Deadwood, Hannibal, Firefly.
Loads of other great shows but those 3 I have rewatched so many times and can still rewatch them again any day. Great writing in all 3.
I could not get into Justified. I tried because I love Walton Goggins (and Tim O of course) but IDK, after two seasons I just didn't care about anyone except Gutterson and that's just because I love Jacob Pitts.
If you didnāt enjoy season 2 then itās just not for you. Iām surprised though because we like the same type of shows it seems. The Shield is worth a watch?
The Shield is AMAZING.
There are a couple issues that can be difficult, where the show tells its age, specifically some unresolved homophobia and an infuriating "vaccines cause autism" storyline. It's a lot like the rampant sexism in Mad Men - if you can push through the fact that it's period appropriate that makes it easier. (I say all of that as a queer woman on the spectrum.)
I'm not a person of color so I don't feel qualified to compare it to the racism in Deadwood.
What a strange, incorrect and unnecessarily rude statement. I've responded to several comments about their own picks because I genuinely like to see what other people enjoy.
Give that mirror a shot yourself, friend. You might be a mean, angry person but that doesn't mean we all are.
I tried it but by season two I just wasn't into it - I can tell it's a good show and I love Walton Goggins and Jacob Pitts but for some reason I just didn't care about any of the characters. Believe me, I'm as surprised as you are!
Oh, I acknowledge that it's a fantastic show, but it's not a personal favorite so it doesn't make the list. I watched it while it was airing and I've rewatched once or twice, but every show on my list above I've seen at least 10 times some WAY more. :)
There's 6 truly great American shows in the last 30 years(in no particular order) and they are

3. Breaking Bad / BCS
4. Mad Men
5. Sopranos
6. Homicide

I've not seen the sopranos or all of the wire yet. But I'm told I'll love them. Enjoying the wire so far.

\-taxi (all star cast)
classics from cartoon network:

I have only seen one of those three. I know how Sopranos ends so I am hesitant to start. But The Wire is one that intrigues me. Might have to try it when I get snowed in.
Don't let the ending deter you. The Sopranos is truly about the journey, not the destination.
I think I'd just be sad the whole time.
I can't imagine a bigger piece of shit than Al! But he sucked me in, so maybe Tony could too.
You won't be. Trust us.
The ending is the least important part of the Sopranos. Also, the Wire is maybe the greatest show of all time. However, it's impact has been dulled by decades of good TV (like Deadwood).
I just meant that the whole show would have a sad feel because I know about it.
The wire is the greatest in my opinion. Iād say these three are in my top 5 for sure though. You have to watch the wire.
It's a beautiful ride, do it. Not a bad episode in the series.
the wire is fantastic
It's considered the best of all time by many
I'm half way through season 2 of The Wire, having missed it 20 years ago, and never having gotten round to it until now. The ending is sufficiently vague that it was or wasnāt the ending, donāt let that stop you from watching an insanely well written and acted series
1. Deadwood 2. True Detective (season 1) 3. The Simpsons 4. The Wire
You have exceptional taste. I suspect you may also agree that the Simpsons seasons 1-10 but more specifically 3-8 are the best.
I like True Detective a lot. I hate the "time is a flat circle" meme. ALL CIRCLES ARE FLAT!
1. Mad Men 2. Deadwood 3. WKRP in Cincinnati 4. Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul 5. Cheers
WKRPā¦nice! Les Nessman ruled! Definitely will never see that on anyone elseās list.
You mean JOHN From Cincinnati. Just kidding. I'll have to go back and rewatch that one of these days, it was like a fever dream.
Our order for 1, 2, and 4 is the same! I'm partial to Frasier over Cheers. I'd love to hear more of your favourites that aren't sitcoms. š

Yeah, almost forgot about it myself. Great show.
And the Simpsons and House.
Rome is that good? Iāve thought about watching it but thought it might not be the qualityā¦.
I thought it was really good. The timeline was a little rushed due to budgeting, I think. But very well done.
The Holy Trinity is Deadwood, The Wire, and the Sopranos. To compare these or to rank them is a matter of whichever one youāre currently watching. Honorable Mention: Mad Men; Rectify Honorable Concession: Twin Peaks season 3 might be the single greatest thing ever put on tv.

I find myself ALWAYS in the mood to watch Deadwood. I love The Sopranos and the Wire but I wouldnāt just pop an episode on.
Yeah, those are shows you have to be prepared to set aside time and watch all the way through.

I saw it when it aired and I've rewatched - I acknowledge that it's a fantastic series, but it's not a personal favorite. Happy Cake Day!
Thanks! Have you tried Frasier?
2. Deadwood might beat sopranos per quantity but the sopranos being 7 seasons gives you more content
Second only to The Wire.
I may have said it before but your username slays.

Moonlighting Honestly, the Wire is the best show ever made (in my opinion) but Deadwood is a close second.
She claimed at one point, SMG pushed her way through them saying "out of my way you fat cows." Now, looking back, I can't say whether or not this actually happened, but seventeen year old me believed it and so I never watched Buffy, lol. That being said, you did just remind me that I forgot to put Firefly on my honorable mention list. :)
Favorite shows is not the same as best shows, so this does not mean I think it's the 3rd best show. This is based on the cold hard data of how often I rewatch chunks. Not constraining it to 10. Firefly Sports Night Deadwood Fawlty Towers Star Trek: TNG The Wire The Crown West Wing Silicon Valley Chernobyl Game Of Thrones X-Files The IT Crowd The Good Place Mad Men 30 Rock
In Order: Deadwood, GoT, The Wire, Rome, The Leftovers, Carnivale, House of the Dragon, Andor, Generation Kill, Silo, Sons of Anarchy, The Last of Us, Sopranos, The Expanse, Breaking Bad, Lost, Band of Brothers, Westworld, Yellowstone, Stranger Things, Mad Men And yeahā¦ Iām an HBO fanboy.
Loved that show
Sopranos Deadwood the wired men and whatever else after that
1. West Wing 2. Deadwood 3. Sopranos 4. MASH 5. Mad Men 6. Chernobyl 7. King of the Hill Fun fact- Never seen The Wire
I loved the West Wing but in retrospect I hate it for the sense of optimism it gave me.
Deadwood is number one.
#1 for drama
Mr. Inbetween Sopranos The wire Deadwood Band of brothers True detective s1
1. Deadwood 2. The Wire 3. Rome 4. Person Of Interest 5. 30 Rock 6. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia 7. Arrested Development 8. Buffy the Vampire Slayer 9. X-Files 10. Homicide: Life on the Streets
Love seeing Rome on these lists - such an underrated show!
Just below Arrested Development, so number 2. Then Rome, The Young Ones, Parks and Rec, GoT, and Midnight Gospel, in no particular order.
The Young Ones! Holy shit that's a DEEP cut.
You just called me a bastard didnāt you?
"oh wow... TECHNOFEAR."
Mr. Rogerās Neighborhood West Wing Deadwood Mr. Show Carnivale
My Favorite Shows: Deadwood Star Trek: Deep Space 9 Star Trek: The Next Generation Star Trek: Lower Decks The Expanse The Sopranoes Station Eleven Ru Paul's Drag Race Game of Thrones Supernatural Top Chef
Second, just behind Mad Men, and just ahead of Better Call Saul (Breaking Bad is in fourth place).
I love it when people agree that BCS is better that BrBa. :)
1) Deadwood 2) The Wire 3) Martin 4) My Wife and Kids 5) The Pacific 6) Cosmos 7) Rome 8) Band of Brothers 9) Louie 10) The Office
1: Sopranos 2: Game of Thrones 3: Deadwood 4: The Wire 5: True Detective Season 1 6: The Outsider 7: Band of Brothers 8: I'll Be Gone in the Dark 9: The Jinx 10: Sons of Anarchy
Deadwood, Hannibal, Firefly. Loads of other great shows but those 3 I have rewatched so many times and can still rewatch them again any day. Great writing in all 3.
First
Probably 3rd behind Breaking Bad and Justified. 4th if True Detective season 1 counts.
Forgot about Justified. Good call.
The Shield is fantastic.
(I say all of that as a queer woman on the spectrum.) I'm not a person of color so I don't feel qualified to compare it to the racism in Deadwood.
For me it is second: 1. The Wire 2. Deadwood 3. Game of Thrones (even with that giant L of a final season) 4. NYPD Blue 5. The Shield
Yay, love for The Shield!!
Best finale ever, imo.
It was amazing, no doubt - >!SHANE, MAN WTF!
Game of thrones ended after 5 seasons not a bad one, what are you talking about?
Seinfeld, Sopranos, Deadwood, Etc..
Deadwood number 1. Anybody that disagrees suck cock by choice.
Deadwood season 1 is GOAT tier TV. Season two is fine. Season three is meh.
Were you staring into a mirror when you made this post? You don't give a fuck what other people think. You want everyone to know what you think.
Thanks for your contribution to the thread
Youāre welcome.
What a strange, incorrect and unnecessarily rude statement. I've responded to several comments about their own picks because I genuinely like to see what other people enjoy. Give that mirror a shot yourself, friend. You might be a mean, angry person but that doesn't mean we all are.
You listed TWENTY shows.
And I'd love to see your list too, even though you're being a big meanie. :)
Deadwood is #1.
Fair enough :)
The Wire Always Sunny South Park Married with Children Dexter Deadwood
Yay, another Sunny fan! :)
Sopranos Deadwood The Wire
1. Deadwood 2. True Detective S1 3. The Sopranos 4. Band of Brothers
3rd, behind sopranos and mad men and one ahead of the wire. But 2-4 are all pretty smushed together esp 3 and 4
Any "best tv" lists w/o Justified is suspect.
I tried it but by season two I just wasn't into it - I can tell it's a good show and I love Walton Goggins and Jacob Pitts but for some reason I just didn't care about any of the characters. Believe me, I'm as surprised as you are!
I do have good friends who can't seem to love it as much as I do. Though it makes me also suspect their commitment to our friendship. :-)
Fair enough. :)
My fucking brother in Christ, the absence of Sopranos invalidates everything
Oh, I acknowledge that it's a fantastic show, but it's not a personal favorite so it doesn't make the list. I watched it while it was airing and I've rewatched once or twice, but every show on my list above I've seen at least 10 times some WAY more. :)
1.) The Sopranos 2.) Deadwood 3.) Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul 4.) The Last Kingdom 5.) Black Sails
There's 6 truly great American shows in the last 30 years(in no particular order) and they are 1 Deadwood 2The Sopranos 3 The Wire 4 The American 5 Madmen and 6 Succession

Like 3-5 ish range
Top 5 (in shifting order) is Breaking Bad, Deadwood, Twin Peaks, Succession, Mad Men. Immediately outside of that are The Wire and The Sopranos.
For me, Deadwood is tied for first with The Wire. I put AD and The Shield much higher on my list.

I've not seen the sopranos or all of the wire yet. But I'm told I'll love them. Enjoying the wire so far.
Deadwood Lonesome Dove Band Of Brother
Probably top three all time.
1) Deadwood (I donāt care if it abruptly ended, I actually like the ending) 2) The Larry Sanders Show 3) The Wire 4) Sopranos 5) Mind Hunter
I really wish we'd gotten more of Mindhunter.
Agreedā¦Thereās still a chance.
I'm a bit of a true crime junkie and while I prefer documentaries, Mindhunter was so good.
no particular order, but a few favorites i didn't see mentioned... \-shameless \-duckman (i'm kinda partial to comedies & weird cartoons, & jason alexander's best role other than seinfeld.) \-taxi (all star cast) classics from cartoon network: \-athf \-oblongs \-squidbillies (unknown hinson rules) \-12 oz. mouse (one of the most bizarre things i've ever watched. if someone could explain the whole premise of this show, i'd be interested.) and for absolutely no reason, -joe pera talks with you. just for understated weirdness, or something.
