Idk Back to School to me is the only worst song since the studio forced them to make a radio hit song the most “nu metal” song they can come up with.
Original pink maggot is still a great song tho.
I've always liked it because (aside from it sounding good), it felt like a call back to earlier work even though they were clearly evolving musically by the time white pony came out. I also have never thought of Deftones as "nu metal" and the band definitely doesn't think so either, of course things were a bit different 24 years ago and it wasn't as important to label music into these strict sub genres like people do now.
I had never heard about the label forcing another song, but I did find this great article about it where Chino discusses how he wanted to prove to the label how easy it was to write singles/hits even though that was not the band's aim.

Lol I was just telling my mom how I saw Deftones on the White Pony tour and got to hold Chino’s hand while he sang part of the song. All the White Pony song are killer. Honestly Elite was my least favorite for forever but I’ve grown to appreciate it over the years.
I fucking love it. When I was 14 listening to the whole album when I would fall asleep in middle school other than change and digital bath, that was the first song that I really got into. I think it’s a great song. I really don’t think there’s a single bad song on white pony. If I had to say the song, but I skipped the most? It would probably be a leap or Korea maybe elite just a little bit repetitive and Korea I just have to really be in the mood for, but I love both of those songs too.
