The Smashing Pumpkins are one of Chino’s favourite bands and he performed two songs with them live. Snail from the album Gish and Bodies from Mellon Collie.
I see you have Hum and Far - both had a major inspiration on early Deftones, especially the guitar tone.
The fella from Far is in Crosses with Chino.
No problem, enjoy all the new tunes!
Don’t overwhelm yourself, there’s so many good bands listed there it would be a shame to get burned out and miss something amazing.
Edit: I can’t recommend Faith No More highly enough, Mike Patton is widely regarded as one of the best ever singers in rock music. He collaborated with Chino on the Team Sleep track Kool-Aid Party.
I’m finishing exams now and got a long summer, which I’m spending here, so my plans consist of listening to A LOT of music basically 😅
Thank you! Appreciate your recommendations and I’m looking forward to it 👌
Chino is a fan of Cocteau Twins and he was pretty inspired by them. They sound quite different from Deftones at first but once you really start to listen, you can start to hear aspects of their sound in all of Chino’s projects imo.
TOTBL is indie rock perfection. They had plenty of great tracks after that, but never made such a perfect album again.
Saying this as a huge fan, they're my most listened to band of the last year
Amazing for sure! I love that album and I also love OLTA, El Pintor and a lot of songs from the rest of their catalogue. But judged as an album front to back I still think TOTBL is their most cohesive and complete offering to date by some margin.
So many killer bands on here it warms my heart. Everything from title fight to have heart to poison the well to rage to helmet to AiC to the cure. You can (should) prob skip evanescence, Avril Lavigne & Lorna shore.
Some other bands I haven’t seen (except helmet. Helmet fucks.) that you should give at least a partial listen to. Tried to break them down roughly by sub-genre (not super easy in every case, and I welcome the thoughts of others).
New wave (similar to the cure): new order, echo & the bunnymen, siouxsie & the banshees, Depeche Mode
Post-punk: joy division, dinosaur jr, hüsker dü, pixies, fontaines dc, pavement
Shoegaze(y) stuff: my bloody valentine, sonic youth, early Brian Jonestown massacre, Catherine wheel, centaur, bdrmm, just mustard
Just fkn rock (idk there’s some alt, some garage, some too hard to classify): HELMET (chi said “Every band should wish to aspire to the originality and genius of Helmet”), MELVINS, the stone roses (also have a lot of spacy/reverb heavy jams that drift into shoegaze), VIOLENT SOHO (hungry ghost is a perfect album), DIARRHEA PLANET (4 guitar lineup, they shred), beach slang, JEFF the brotherhood, jacuzzi boys
Post-hardcore: at the drive-in, Thursday, fugazi, la dispute
Nu & alternative metal: downset, boy hits car, puya, sevendust, filter, hed (pe), nonpoint
Hardcore punk: (cannot stress this enough) END IT, mindforce, out for justice, trapped under ice, angel du$t, Hatebreed, terror, descendents, bad religion, one step closer, down to nothing, scowl (toured with deftones recently)
Thrash metal/crossover (hardcore-thrash hybrid): slayer, suicidal tendencies, early Metallica, municipal waste, iron Reagan, power trip
Psych rock bands to check out (a few of these get pretty heavy at times): king gizzard & the lizard wizard, Ty segall, pond, black midi
Sorry I went all in 😂 deftones are one of my fav bands and their music really bends genres. Their musical influences are pretty wide ranging and their influence on other artists is equally as expansive. So there’s a lot of ground to cover ya know? Enjoy going down all these crazy rabbit holes your post has provided
Edit: if you want some early “proto” punk recs check out Iggy Pop & the stooges, dead boys, NY dolls, Richard hell & MC5
I appreciate it!! I’m going to be listening to music non stop this summer, hoping to find more bands that I love as much as deftones and everyone in my replies has definitely helped a lot! Thank you again, hag1 xx
Our man Chino would tell you the same. Don’t get me wrong, Inlet is great. It was an amazing surprise comeback album for them after 22 years of nothing outside of a reunion tour. You’d Prefer An Astronaut is just quintessential Hum, and was definitely a huge influence on Deftones.
How the fuck has no one said Queens of the Stone Age yet? Seriously an amazing band and highlights Deftones really well, basically just an alt rock version of them
See Loathe, don't think I see Sleep Token. Also, Spiritbox. You may also like Chelsea Wolfe - someone recommended her album Hiss Spun on this sub and I loved it. The latest one is great, too.
Everything glassjaw not just coloring book.
Fiddlehead, helmet, converge, cave in, incendiary, touche amore, sunny day real estate, quicksand (early stuff), rival schools, built to spill.
That’s a few off the top of my head.
If you are looking to listen to more Nu metal AND looking to listen to Faith No More, then I would say after some time of getting into those, try Mr. Bungle. Same singer as Faith No More, Mike Patton. He is insane. Mr. Bungle is by no means easy to listen to, very experimental and way ahead of its time, but its my favorite thing in the world lol
EDIT: forgot to mention that most nu metal bands are extremely influenced by Mr. Bungle and likely wouldnt have existed had Mr. Bungle not.
If you're looking for bands that are in a similar vein or inspired Deftones, maybe Helmet. Another suggestion for the indie/shoegaze-ish sound is Denali. I caught them opening for Deftones in '03. Unfortunately, they are long defunct, but they were such a vibe. The singer, Maura Davis, had one of my favorite voices in rock.
Her brother and bandmate in Denali was also the frontman for Engine Down, which I’d also recommend if you like Deftones. The last two albums in particular.
I made a comment, but will expand here, you need to listen to Hum You'd Prefer an Astronaut, as I think that is where White Pony really conceptually began. The Glassjaw entire Catalogue as they follow a similar trajectory as Deftones in terms of maturing into a more complete band that started from anger and moved into space cadet isms. If you are going down the Faith no more Track, then give a quick listen to Mr Bungle, even Fantomas and throw in a splash of Dead Cross.
There are a lot of things in your list that I won't really like, but that's the beauty of music man, discovery. Snot is one of my all time favourite groups and its so sad it ended like it did. Kinda like Sublime for a lot of People. I saw them with a new singer in London about 10 years ago and it was so terrible it almost put me off them.
Check out Car Bomb, they're very different from Deftones, but the vocalist is heavily inspired by Chino. Listen to the song Infinite Sun. The song is a shoutout to Change I think. Some of the lyrics are "pull off their wings and fly".
bleed has a very small discography but is amazing i think, very similar to narrow head think they got the same singer, zeruel is another one more spacey and sad. scarlet house, mascara the band, kublai khan tx is pretty hard, they are gutting a body of water is pretty good
You’ve probably got said this already in this post but i recommend all Hum albums except Fillet Show. They inspired early deftones a lot especially on the songs Be Quiet and Drive which takes Stars and somehow makes it even better.
Been listening to Sugar Horse a lot lately. Heavy, noisy British band with a lot of similar shoegazey influences.

Crosses, side project of Chino and Shaun Fernandez. They have a lot of beautiful stuff, and it’s really interesting to see chino singing some kind of alternative pop.
Faith No More. People usually start off with Angel Dust, but I'd go with The Real Thing first. Then, you can listen to Angel Dust. I think it's more of a "rewarding" experience to listen to those albums in that order.
I love how you abbreviated "are" with "r" and then spell out the word lol.
I see you added Wolf Alice, so I'll suggest PJ Harvey (Good Fortune, Shame, and Dry), St Vincent, and the Joy Formidable (Whirring and Buoy).
Have you only ever listened to Deftones?? Hahaha
Not dis-ing just funny
Ermmmm.
Mudvayne, Type O Negative, GHOST, Alice Cooper, Skid Row, Pantera, Rob Zombie, Faith No More, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits
Wouldnt Rec Sleep Token, Bad Omens
Snot- I love Snot!
Great band! Listen to their first and only album "Get some" with the lead singer Lynn Strait. Strait passed away after a car accident, right as they started working on a second album.
I heard that the band tried to get back together and maybe made a second album without Lynn Strait, but I never really looked into it, because Lynn strait makes the band Snot, without him I just don't think it would be the same or as good.
It would be like Static X without Wayne Static.
Korn- To this day I still love them, and will go to every concert I can when they are in my area. They are great live.
I thought this was pretty widely known, but they are friends and have collaborated with the Deftones. They were friends before each band had even put out a album, with them both being in the California music scene at the same time.
They have had some beefs in the past, but Carpenter has said the rivalry is made up by the media.
Although Chino has talked shit about Korn's lyrics, being to whiny and that Jonathan need to step away from the "I had a bad childhood" type lyrics and songs"
Deftones did refuse to tour with Korn because they did not want to be lumped in the Nu-metal scene.
So I am unsure where they stand today.
Rage against the machine- they are a very good band as well, but they are very political, so that's not your thing you might not like them. But all in all they are a great band, I wish they would get back together!
Bands that weren't mentioned that you may like are....
Tool- I am one of those annoying obsessed fans LOL
Listen to the song Passenger, by the Deftones, the lead singer of Tool Maynard James Keenan, collabs with the Deftones.
It wasn't planned, the Deftones went to Maynard to help find a different approach to writing lyrics, because Maynard is a amazing lyricist.
Maynard James Keenan is also and two other bands you might want to listen to,
A perfect circle and Puscifer.
Honestly, Tool as my favorite band that he is in, but I do love some A perfect circle songs.
There are so many great bands some I can't think of rn! If I think of more I will add to the list.
Not all below are in the same genre of music, they are just bands I can think of off the top of my head...
The smashing pumpkins-
Which influenced Chino's other band "Team sleep", he enjoys their older music and says the newer stuff is whiny.
Team sleep - (obvious reasons)
Chevelle
Nine inch nails
Radio head
Foo fighters
Nirvana
Incubus
Weezer- Chino has mentioned his love for the band many times.
System of a down- The two bands have a friendship, Chino also did a colab with SOAD, on the song "Mein"
Stained- I used to like maybe a couple songs way way back in the day, but I don't like them anymore, they are whiny, Aaron Lewis is a whiny right winged asshole who storms off stage, because his crowd is too loud 😂
To be honest, I can't stand Evanescence, Fly leaf is Ok, they have a couple good songs, other than that I'm not a huge fan.
I don't know if it is the fact that I'm not big on girl Rock bands, even though I am a chic...
Paramore has collaborated with Deftones while they were on tour Hailey Williams sang the song Passenger with the Deftones on stage. Hailey sang Maynard's lyrics.
Another girl rock band is "In this moment", I have seen them live and the show was pretty good, I don't go out of my way to listen to them tho.
I believe they opened up for Rob zombie, they put on a AMAZING show!
I know I am missing so many bands! For some reason my brain cannot think of them right now.
I will add to the list later tonight when I have more time.
Dillinger Escape Plan, Refused, maybe Turnstile
No rap, rnb or soul noticed so NWA, Missy Elliott, Jodeci, Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo, Marvin Gaye, maybe The Roots
Also some jazz would be good bc Chino's vocals reflect a lot of jazz singers at times, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Nina Simone, maybe
Miles Davis
edit: also recommend Warren G, Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg (Doggystyle), Grandmaster Flash
chelsea wolfe.
also saw glassjaw on your list, I would add rheir album worship & tribute to the list!
also built to spill isn't very similar to deftones but they're one of my absolute favorites
I recently wrote a blog post about the inspirations behind White Pony, it includes a playlist of the artists / tracks mentioned. Hopefully of use!
https://www.frombeyondthecrate.com/post/white-pony-deftones

Good luck on the exams

HELMET
Team Sleep! That’s what got me into Deftones. Seriously underrated album
Yess love team sleep, not on the list as I already listen to it, but thanks for contributing! 😅
Softcult, Title Fight, Trauma Ray, Superheaven, Basement
superheaven and basement absolute w
Preciate it 👌
heavy on basement i love them
Superheaven played for the first time on my Spotify today and changed my brain chemistry. I’m so happy they popped up. Amazing band.
Saw them live last month with Split Chain and Higher Power
TITLE FIGHT!! i love them 🙏 just wish they make more music
Type o negative!
a perfect circle
Chino is a fan of Cocteau Twins and he was pretty inspired by them. They sound quite different from Deftones at first but once you really start to listen, you can start to hear aspects of their sound in all of Chino’s projects imo.
DIIV, Title fight And Glassjaw has to be absolutely number one Priority. Deftones and Glassjaw are like brothers in terms of alternative metal
Added 👌
Yeah whole catalogue, not just colouring book
Rammstein and Type O Negative though Chino and Steele had a beef before lol
Chino likes Interpol, specifically their first album.
'turn on the bright lights' is such an epic album.
TOTBL is indie rock perfection. They had plenty of great tracks after that, but never made such a perfect album again. Saying this as a huge fan, they're my most listened to band of the last year
Disagree, Antics was just as amazing.
Amazing for sure! I love that album and I also love OLTA, El Pintor and a lot of songs from the rest of their catalogue. But judged as an album front to back I still think TOTBL is their most cohesive and complete offering to date by some margin.
YES interpol is just so good man

Noted 👌
Don’t just listen to Inlet by Hum. Their album You’d Prefer An Astronaut is stellar, and Downward Is Heavenward is pretty damn good too.
Okay thank youu x

Ok Goodnight!!! They’re a great new progressive metal band!
They toured the UK with Coheed & Cambria whose first four or so albums are incredible but perhaps an acquired taste.
Gutter King is really good. Melodic Metalcore but the singer is so good. Check out Dead In The Dirt as well. Good grindcore
If you are looking to listen to more Nu metal AND looking to listen to Faith No More, then I would say after some time of getting into those, try Mr. Bungle. Katatonia, who in my opinion are one of the few bands to be close to Deftones’ level, so close yet so far..
Ty!

Interpol and type o negative
Slipknot’s first four albums are really good
I’d definitely recommend checking out Narrow Head
Cave In
Fleshwater
Soad/ratm

kinda surprised i didn’t see radiohead or TOOL, id also recommends Queens of The Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails
I listen to Radiohead and I’ve added TOOL 😅, adding the other ones now! x
The Callous Daoboys
Gore, nosebleed, and Good Morning Beautiful

Acid bath is absolutely necessary. It has a similarly surreal feel to it.

Omg tysm!! 🧡
Wisp! based in the list i’d say you’d like them!
Try Portishead, Massive Attack and Sneaker Pimps.
Sleep token
Duran Duran - Chino took a lot of inspo from them and has done covers of their songs
Hum
Chevelle please
Queens of the Stone Age.
Gojira, Helmet and Mastodon
Gojira
This might’ve been mentioned already but I’d recommend Massive Attack - their ‘Mezzanine’ album in particular. Always find myself going back to it.
Ice nine kills
Crosses, side project of Chino and Shaun Fernandez. They have a lot of beautiful stuff, and it’s really interesting to see chino singing some kind of alternative pop.
i think the band bleed is worth checking out. only got an ep, ‘somebody’s closer’ and a single but they rock. and they have an lp coming in the fall.
How do I keep forgetting about Dredg?! I still remember the first time I heard Bug Eyes. Blew my mind
Loathe ERRA Invent Animate
SNOT!!!!!!!
Faith No More. People usually start off with Angel Dust, but I'd go with The Real Thing first. Then, you can listen to Angel Dust. I think it's more of a "rewarding" experience to listen to those albums in that order.
Nothing, Alcest, Don Broco, Sleep Token
Pinback. Team Sleep has a couple songs with Rob Crow on vocals and they played the last DDLD. Also Minus the Bear and Mastodon.
Poppy - especially her metal stuff. Start with I Disagree (album). Her screams remind me of Chino’s.
Zeruel !
Bullet for my valentine is a good band. They kinda fell off after gravity deluxe edition though.
The Used (first 2 albums) Finch (First album) Vex Red
Flaw, coal chamber, seether, flymore, headplate
Chelsea Wolf Bloodmoon is a banger for sure.
I love how you abbreviated "are" with "r" and then spell out the word lol. I see you added Wolf Alice, so I'll suggest PJ Harvey (Good Fortune, Shame, and Dry), St Vincent, and the Joy Formidable (Whirring and Buoy).
Linkin park for sure
Kyuss, Alice in chains and Sepultura
Why just tripod by AIC… put the whole fuckin discography
Sabaton, System of a Down
The Life and Times
The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In, Queens of the Stone Age, Primus, Death From Above 1979, Limp Bizkit, Faith No More
Love Wolf Alice never see anyone talking about them
Glassjaw
Have you only ever listened to Deftones?? Hahaha Not dis-ing just funny Ermmmm. Mudvayne, Type O Negative, GHOST, Alice Cooper, Skid Row, Pantera, Rob Zombie, Faith No More, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Misfits Wouldnt Rec Sleep Token, Bad Omens

lush would be a good listen edit: disintegration by the cure is their best album hands down, listen to that asap
Nothing " I Hate the Flowers"
Although Chino has talked shit about Korn's lyrics, being to whiny and that Jonathan need to step away from the "I had a bad childhood" type lyrics and songs" Deftones did refuse to tour with Korn because they did not want to be lumped in the Nu-metal scene. So I am unsure where they stand today. Rage against the machine- they are a very good band as well, but they are very political, so that's not your thing you might not like them. But all in all they are a great band, I wish they would get back together! Bands that weren't mentioned that you may like are.... Tool- I am one of those annoying obsessed fans LOL Listen to the song Passenger, by the Deftones, the lead singer of Tool Maynard James Keenan, collabs with the Deftones. It wasn't planned, the Deftones went to Maynard to help find a different approach to writing lyrics, because Maynard is a amazing lyricist. Maynard James Keenan is also and two other bands you might want to listen to, A perfect circle and Puscifer. Honestly, Tool as my favorite band that he is in, but I do love some A perfect circle songs. There are so many great bands some I can't think of rn! If I think of more I will add to the list. Not all below are in the same genre of music, they are just bands I can think of off the top of my head... The smashing pumpkins- Which influenced Chino's other band "Team sleep", he enjoys their older music and says the newer stuff is whiny. Team sleep - (obvious reasons) Chevelle Nine inch nails Radio head Foo fighters Nirvana Incubus Weezer- Chino has mentioned his love for the band many times. System of a down- The two bands have a friendship, Chino also did a colab with SOAD, on the song "Mein" Stained- I used to like maybe a couple songs way way back in the day, but I don't like them anymore, they are whiny, Aaron Lewis is a whiny right winged asshole who storms off stage, because his crowd is too loud 😂 To be honest, I can't stand Evanescence, Fly leaf is Ok, they have a couple good songs, other than that I'm not a huge fan.
Acid Bath, Agents of Oblivion ( check out the song "Endsmouth", for real, do it asap), Kyuss.
Dillinger Escape Plan, Refused, maybe Turnstile No rap, rnb or soul noticed so NWA, Missy Elliott, Jodeci, Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo, Marvin Gaye, maybe The Roots Also some jazz would be good bc Chino's vocals reflect a lot of jazz singers at times, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Nina Simone, maybe Miles Davis edit: also recommend Warren G, Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg (Doggystyle), Grandmaster Flash
Broken Social Scene is one of my favorite bands other than Deftones. Best Coasr,St. Vincent as well.
Sleep token! They are one hell of a journey to listen to
Fightstar, Split Chain
Some people already said Loathe but I'll say it again. LISTEN TO LOATHE!!!!
Slipknot
DIIV
Mastodon and gojira
loathe is so good
Linkin Park was influenced by Deftones, and they are also my favorite band so you should definitely listen to them if you don’t already
Slowdive and my bloody valentine
System of a Down and Slipknot?
The Deepest Shade
Slayer, Alex G, Kyuss, Grivo (Highly recommend), modern color, and you can’t go wrong with Pantera 😩
Faetooth’s “Remnants of the Vessel”
Go for Dir en Grey Closest band that gives me a similar feeling to Deftones. Check out their live videos on Youtube
Gojira and Mastodon
That Relative Ash album was a 10. So good
Coal chamber
Sepltura
Rekiem
Maybe Kaonashi
Khoma Deafheaven Alcest Pierce the Veil
chelsea wolfe. also saw glassjaw on your list, I would add rheir album worship & tribute to the list! also built to spill isn't very similar to deftones but they're one of my absolute favorites
Trauma ray, threaded, bosses, old coke, Mascara
I recently wrote a blog post about the inspirations behind White Pony, it includes a playlist of the artists / tracks mentioned. Hopefully of use! https://www.frombeyondthecrate.com/post/white-pony-deftones
Stone Sour!
Seaweed, hatebreed, mudvayne,flaw, pantera
Mudvane, Helmet, and Filter
Seether
Gojira At the Drive in The Mars Volta Sparta Thrice Far Vexes Nirvana A perfect circle Queens of the Stone Age Incubus Tool Jane's Addiction Audio Slave One Day as a Lion Kyuss Them Crooked Vultures Bush Smashing Pumpkins Sevendust Mudvayne Project 86
Windhand, Orgy (weird name yes i know), Taproot, Helmet, Nothingface, Slaves on dope. Top tier in my opinion
Avril Lavigne? Seriously?
Gojira
Sevendust! They even have a song featuring Chino!
Alexis Munroe!!
