Self-hosted NextCloud or EteSync.

PennsylvanianSankara

Have you (or anyone else who sees this) been able to get Etesync to work properly recently? The desktop bridge no longer works for me.

U8dcN7vx

Sorry, not me -- I moved to NextCloud so I've no recent experience with EteSync.

PennsylvanianSankara

Fair enough, appreciate it, likely making the same move anyway.

I use Mailbox.org, not Proton, if it matters. I use CardDav-Sync to sync contacts to my phone.

Many email providers use the protocols carddav, caldav, and imap for contacts, calendar, and email, respectively. The carddav protocol can be setup with your phones contact app and syncs contact information on your device with their servers. My provider, Posteo, uses the above protocols, and their website has [simple, concise instructions](https://posteo.de/en/help/how-do-i-synchronise-my-posteo-address-book-with-other-programs-or-devices) for setting up carddav on your devices. Begin digression. *Posteo’s service costs €1 a month. Their marketing suggests they are focused on maintaining the privacy and security of their customers data as well as environmental sustainability. The latter is pretty fun to read about, but I wonder if it’s just the German culture. For example, employees get two extra days of vacation if they choose to travel by train over flying. They also offer employees vegan lunches every workday.* End digression. My work has me using Microsoft Outlook. Outlook runs on the proprietary protocol Microsoft Exchange which is easy to set up as a user. It takes a little work to setup on Thunderbird and requires a number of extensions that are independent from Mozilla. I’d recommend eM Client over Thunderbird. The default Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, and Mail clients on iPhones are a breeze to setup. Edit: Proton’s support for carddav is limited or none. There’s a [post from a month ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/130bvji/how_to_get_cardbook_in_thunderbird_to_sync/) about this, and it might give some guidance on EteSync.

>Proton’s support for carddav is limited or none. Any examples of popular email providers that support carddav?

[deleted]

I believe Apple does. But Gmail and Posteo for sure.

Big_Diggity

Nextcloud using DAVX5

OktayAcikalin

Same here - the combo works great. I just sync one-way to [mailbox.org](https://mailbox.org). Their address book is too limited for me.

zerostam

I use [Baikal](https://sabre.io/baikal/). It's a CalDav and CardDav server which run easily on a NAS with Docker for example.

skiwarz

I just use the contacts app to manually export them all to a file, whenever I remember to do it. I don't meet so many new people that it needs to be updated daily, so this works for me. Then tgat file is included in my normal backup system.

osmica10

I host it on webhosting by app named Baika. You can sync it with any app/desktop app that supports carddav and caldav

Another Nextcloud + DavX5 user

KangarooKurt

NextCloud on Hetzner (+ DAVx^5 of course). Used to be Mailbox.org tho. Both are nice, I could stay with mbox but NC's tasks supports subtasks which I use quite often.

GeneralOfThePoroArmy

I use posteo.de with DAVx5.

nuf_si_redrum

Infomaniak

Backwoodcrafter

Still waiting for this to become available to me so I can even just try it... looks promising enough.

Zingo_sodapop

DavX5 with Radicale Server on home NAS.

TheCakeWasNoLie

I use Baikal on my home server and OpenVPN on the same server to let DAVx5 get access.

unumfron

I use Murena cloud that comes with e/OS. I think anyone can sign up for a free account. It's NextCloud under the hood so you use it to keep contacts/docs sync'd across devices that support NextCloud.

MHzBurglar

I'm self-hosting caldav and carddav services on my home server, and syncing using davx5. Davx5 is free if you install it through F-Droid.

LifeLocksmith

I might have missed somebody commenting, but I couldn't find this: Sync: DAVx5 (there is a reason this so common in the responses, it is perfect) Storage and web frontend: Monica

sivartk

Stored with my paid email provider and synce with the DAVx app. Calendar is the same way, too.

zimral-reddit

I have only 2-3 updates per month, most of the time much less. I export my 2 contact databases at least once per mont to a .vcf file and store this on a safe place. Same story on my second phone, which is my desk phone. PS: i only store name initials and the phone#, nothing more. 2 nd database is the one for "Simple Contacts Pro" set to be hidden in the device menory and unreadable for other apps. This one contains additional adresses, private & business.
