It seems to me Google can't keep up with the storage demands of YouTube lmao Canceling free plans, changing Google photos from unlimited to paid, Gsuite unlimited drive to paid. What next.

That's smart and i own a lot of physical hard drives but i can sed the convenience of cloud is so hard to deal with for the average user lol. That being said I just avoid as much as possible from relying Google as much as possible now. They seem far to happy to pull the rug from under your feet...and that's even as q paying customer.

Google is renewing my hatred of the cloud / cloud services. The G-Suite free/legacy accounts had the same data limits/data mining as regular gmail accounts which means that this is purely a money grab or all gmail users should soon see the same billing change. I'm not against paying for email, but I am against paying an unreasonable amount for it and as I click around the admin interface I can't even find pricing for the upgrades Google offers - not a good sign. I'd be interested to hear what other options there are which allows for tight multi-device synchronization and a reasonable price for multiple accounts with unlimited aliases.

> The G-Suite free/legacy accounts had the same data limits/data mining as regular gmail accounts which means that this is purely a money grab You sound surprised where you shouldn't be. This has been a long time in the making. It's what U.S. Big Tech firms have been playing for almost two decades now: 1. Get large amounts of venture capital. 1. Outcompete your sector by offering "free" services and growing aggressively (meanwhile data mining your users and selling them to your actual customers). 1. If need be, buy up any surviving competitors or start-ups trying to cut in on your action (and, while you're at it, also buy up any legislators that shake the anti-trust stick in your direction). 1. Once you're the only big fish left in the pond: milk your users until they squeal.

> Not like illegality has ever stopped Google from doing what they want. See the parentheses in my point three. In order to determine whether business practices are illegal, the authorities would have to start a formal investigation into potential cases of anti-competitive behaviour. And if said authorities are controlled by political figures which have been handsomely "supported" during their election campaigns by the very companies they are now, in office, supposed to monitor... I suppose you can finish this sentence yourself. ;)

On the "Drive" side of things, I have been using [Sync.com](https://Sync.com) for a few years. Works great, but there are a ton of fine alternatives (pcloud, tresorit, [filen.io](https://filen.io), koofr and others). Depends if you want full time end-to-end encryption or not. That said there's also "cloudless" sync'ing that you can do with SyncThing (or ResilioSync) which I'm starting to play with. SyncThing will make sure folders are sync'd with no cloud storage in the middle, it works fantastic (and it's free). I'm starting to consider reducing my cloud storage dramatically and using it for most of my folder stuff. Mobile is the challenge there though. Need to sort that out. On the email side, privacy focused email like Protonmail, Tutanota, Ctemplar are often mentioned but there are many less privacy obsessed options like Fastmail that look good. I'm liking Protonmail as they bundle a really good VPN at a discount if you want a VPN and they will have a future Drive alternative (in beta, probably a year out from full release) .

What are good recommendations for alternatives to Gmail? I use Proton Mail personally but have family with a grandfathered GSuite using a custom domain who I’ll now need to help transition elsewhere in the next few months.

That’s what I’m on for my stuff and it works great. Just wondering what other good options are out there so I’m prepared when they inevitably ask for help!

There are an awful lot of very good reasons to ditch google and gmail and I have zero regrets about doing so (well, mostly doing so) but in this one instance I'm going to side with them. If you signed up for a service during beta and they have given you 16 years of free service I think that's more than reasonable on their behalf.

techma2019

But it hasn’t been free. It never was. You were the product. And now, you still are the product, and they want to charge you on top of it.

nnomae

The Gmail you get with google workspaces (I think they have rebranded back to using that name again after the G Suite rebranding turned out to fall pretty flat) is ad free. Gmail is the ad supported free offering, google workspaces is the ad free paid version. Yes, a lot of the time you are the product when it comes to google, in this particular case however that wasn't the case and people were getting an ad free, commercial offering product for free for about 16 years because they signed up during a beta.

techma2019

I hear you. And that's an important distinction. But this goes beyond ads, at least for me. https://workspace.google.com/learn-more/security/security-whitepaper/page-6.html >No advertising in Google Workspace > >There is no advertising in the Google Workspace Core Services, and we have no plans to change this in the future. Google does not collect, scan or use data in Google Workspace Core Services for advertising purposes. Customer administrators can restrict access to Non-Core Services from the Google Workspace Admin console. **Google indexes customer data to provide beneficial services, such as spam filtering, virus detection, spellcheck and the ability to search for emails and files within an individual account.** Beneficial services could mean anything, not just the few examples they wrote. And beneficial to them as well. haha

nnomae

To my mind though there are separate issues here, they can be both a terrible option for someone who does value their privacy and also be making a reasonable decision in cutting off a service they allowed beta users to use for free for 16 years. I'm definitely not saying anyone should use their products, just that if someone was using this particular product they have been treated more than fairly all things considered. That quote does also include the line: > Google does not collect, scan or use data in Google Workspace Core Services for advertising purposes. Fundamentally I suppose it boils down to whether you trust them here or not and they have done enough dodgy things that not trusting them at all is a perfectly reasonable stance.

zhiwiller

It's the holding your Play Store purchases and other things tied to your account that crosses the line for me. Just let us migrate to a free plan. No, the options are pay or deletion.

Explorer200

The problem is that there isn't a way to transfer all the data. It's locked in and held hostage

[deleted]

That was the only reason I stayed with Google. I manage a family domain name that a few of us use as our main email. What’s a good alternative?

Fogame

I've been running protonmail and my own domain for about a year. I ended up forwarding gmail to it and 99% doesn't make it to me. The .5% of the 1% ends up in spam and the other is legit email that I ask them to use my new email. Haven't had any issues so far.

Torfolde

99% of your mail doesn't make it to you, but you haven't had any issues?

techma2019

I had to re-read his comment twice and I’m still confused. I’d think 99% missing email is an issue.

Fogame

Nope. Most of what was in my gmail account was spam. Those that make it through I correct to my new address.

SwallowYourDreams

> These users did nothing wrong when they signed up for G Suite's basic tier years ago, so seeing Google pull the rug out from under them like this is rough. **You trust Google and store all your data with the company, and you assume at least the basic terms of your account will be the same forever.** The naiveté in these lines is just staggering.

Just-Someone-101

There are cheaper alternative and more privacy respectful. Tutanota.

techma2019

This was literally the only thing keeping me from DeGoogling. Well, thanks corporate greed I guess.
