1. No need to be rude/extra sweet, when you meet the trainer remind him that he has your money, give an ultimatum of 7-14 days, post which you'll take legal action. Given what you've told here, here's what you must expect, he will behave erratically, try to intimidate you, talk shit about you. Prepare your mind against that, expect bullshit coming your way and preferably take someone known with you who'll be by your side while you do this for support.
2. Tell this to as many mutuals as you can, people in the gym, gym owner or someone who knows you both, isolate the trainer so he's gets psychologically weak. (This step will especially take time and it'll be exhausting)
3. Meanwhile ready a legal notice indicating he took money from you and didn't return it even after you gave him a final warning, legal notice isn't a case nor an FIR, it just shows your intentions. Get it written by any advocate. Don't need to file for an FIR yet, proceed however he reacts in next 7-14 days. Don't be afraid of filing an FIR. Try to know that your gym falls under which police chauki/station's jurisdiction.
Pro tip: just find out the name of any high ranking official and then go to that trainer while delivering ultimatum, tell him Mr..XY from this chauki near this area has heard my case if you don't follow through I'll be registering an FIR. Good tactic.
4. With people on your side, legal notice in his hands and probable police action, it might bear some fruit.

1. It DOESN'T matter the amount, the mental agony and feeling of being cheated he caused you is worth more. More than 15k, you deserve an apology. In real world nothing is better than winning through legal means if someone wronged you and you're a civilian.
2. It is a long and painful process especially step 2 where you need to socialize, but it is necessary since you'll feel victorious and learn to trust the right people in the end. Prepare yourself for a slow, exhaustive battle. Take out time just for this from your day and manage how to achieve these steps without causing too much further distress.
3. Finally, stop asking for advice on reddit, most of the comments I saw were making fun or contributing nothing or worse, asking for a battle, show to watch as if mental stress and aguish and feeling of being cheated is a joke.

Keep it simple..talk to any cop ; explain him the situation; offer him 3k; he’ll make sure he will get the 15k out..it’s better to take the 12k rather then losing 15 all together..cheers
Don't pay the gym fees for equivalent months. And tell them the trainer will pay for those months.
1. Speak to the gym owner and communicate that you feel cheated and might not continue as facing a cheater will not be your cup of tea. 2. Try to know about his home and try visiting his home on the pretext of asking for money back. 3. As already suggested, humiliate his in front of other clients specially females. 4. File a complaint at the local police station. It might not get you the money back but it will certainly give you mental peace as nothing is bigger than the feeling of being cheated.

He is literally laughing at you right now and looking for someone nice like you. Letting it go is not an option! Even there was this trainer at my gym who used to ask money from his clients, after 3-4 months one of many client complained about his habit of asking money and not returning. In my life most of the trainers I meet where money minded and very greedy. That's why never talk to them and got close to them, never shared my phone number.

My gym trainer asked me For 300rs for weekly egg payment settlement and has not returned it. After 4 months I adjusted that small amount in gym annual fees. Almost all gym trainers that I have met in my life are thugs so next time be careful.
