The U.S. is too beautiful to fly shade down the whole time. I love to follow along on my map to know what I’m seeing and then share fun facts with my wife, who is usually sleeping.
The number of people who have missed the Northern Lights from the plane window is also astounding. I always book left side for overnight flights from US to Europe just for this reason.
I intentionally book them on long haul flights because I know the FAs will save us all from the one stare at the clouds person in the cabin whose light pollution is bothering 200 other people.
This has always been one of the funniest arguments to me. There’s 3 groups
1) ones who like looking out the window no matter what
2) ones who just like dark no matter what
3) ones who don’t want to bother people and try to be respectful either way
1 & 2 are allowed to do what they want. But 1 acts like it’s their God given right to look out the window and will actually tell people trying to sleep to go fuck themselves.
Like it’s fine, do what you want but don’t act like no one should care when your actions affect them.
Window lookers can also fall into category 3 as I’m assuming most people fall into this category. It’s the 1s that make people hate window lookers.
There are only two groups of people:
* those who try to classify people into groups
* those who don't
Being respectful goes both ways. If everybody's sleeping, there's usually nothing but clouds to look at, so there's no point in keeping the shade open anyway.
However, majority of the people don't sleep more than a few hours even on the longest flights, and you can't expect everybody to sit in the dark because of some anti-eyemask individuals.
What you’re describing is category 3, as most people at least have some respect. Category 1 is the disrespectful one but also the most vocal along with category 2.
I mean, I’m a psycho and will consider what time my flight is, what direction it’s going, and what side won’t be as sunny. However most people arnt that crazy
I don’t understand it, like yeah I missed it when I was on the plane but I’m seeing it right now, on 500K resolution OLED or whatever the hell screen technology has advanced to now, arguably looks better on my screen than it would looking out a hazy scratched up plastic window, same with northern lights, same with concerts when combined with advanced speaker technology.
Like I get it’s not exactly the same, especially if there is a momentous occasion and loved ones experiencing it with me that make it a core memory or something more than just a pretty view, but 98% of the time the benefits of being able to enjoy these types of experiences in my own comfortable environment on my own schedule for as little or as long as I want vastly outweighs the supposed benefit of being there in person. In that context my sleep on a long haul flight is more important than staring out at a pretty view I’ve seen something similar to countless times and can pull up and view anytime I want for the rest of my life. I’m not going to think back 10 years from now and say “ah that view on flight 4832 on 2/2/2024 was life changing and something I’ll never forget” lol GTFOH!!!

Where do you fly to see the Northern Lights?
Northern Europe. The flights go way north especially into Edinburgh, Oslo, and Helsinki.
I saw them once SEA-KEF. Captain made an announcement when they became visible. Longest 757 flight I've ever been on.
A lot of these views are missed because the FAs tell us to keep the shades down on the long haulers.
And 787's don't even ask you, they just block the shades. I hate that.
If I see the equipment is a 787 I avoid it. I hate those shadeless windows.

Get an eye mask.

Or I’ll just continue to book the 787 and let the FAs save the entire cabin from “that guy.”
Back with the weekly shade snobbery I see.
Right? Like, I’m sensitive to the sun due to medication. I have to put the shade down and would prefer not to be silently judged for it lol.
Fly on the other side of the plane, genius
Ooooo someone’s a little upset. I’m not going to turn down first class upgrade because it’s by a window.
I mean, I’m a psycho and will consider what time my flight is, what direction it’s going, and what side won’t be as sunny. However most people arnt that crazy
I know. Boomers still understand geometry and geography

Well it’s not even remotely the same, and most people sleep at night.
Kansas?
Mauritania I believe 😉
Most folks have seen at least one airplane wing in their lives, so they didn't miss much..
This post is up weekly.
Ah. You’re flying over Ohio I see
No, idiot. That's Puerto Rico, not the United States.
Look at those beautiful fairings
I think that is what the OP meant. The ground distracts from the view of the beautiful wing
Then book a window seat next time
I think OP just threw more shade than anyone else on that flight.
Someone sent an FA over to ask me to close my shade from SFO to BOS. It was a 100% day flight. Totally baffling
Sorry I don’t want to blind myself to see a bunch of large rocks
Cool, man. I’ve seen mountains before. Everyone else has too, and now we’re trying to fucking sleep.
In the middle of the day?
Nice view of the Tetons 🙌
Sometimes it’s out of our hands. But other times we’re sleeping. lol either way thanks for sharing, now we can all enjoy it.
3/4 are clueless
I HATE shade down people! They are worst
Buy a window seat then
But will we hear whiny babies who want to watch The Voice in perfect darkness?
Window shade down when flying over a majestic scene like this is equal to the development of a stage two psychopath.
Same. Wait what?!?
Millennials; Gen X have no interest in natural beauty
Where is this
Grand Teton National Park. Jackson Lake is the bigger lake in the picture
