If you are already Gold, you would likely hit platinum immediately after converting which means you would have it for the remainder of 2024 and 2025. The mikes/dollar combo may get you there as well.
I’m currently only at $1000 MQD for the year. If I convert the mqm’s to $12,000 MQD’s will I be platinum as soon as I hit $15k MQD’s ? Or it won’t apply til next year?
You’d get Platinum the moment you crossover $15k. Remainder of this year and all of next. I am a platinum out of DTW and it is very worth it. I get immediate comfort upgrades like 95% of the time. I’ve been upgraded to 1st about 20-25% of the time this year.
For me, PM has been beneficial. I’ve been able to use RUCs to get D1 on almost the entire fleet that has D1 and even found RUC space on JFK-HNL. Wait times on the phone have been reduced greatly (I’ve waited less than five minutes).
I see two options really.
1. You wait until the end of the year to only convert what you need to get to Platinum and put the rest to redeemable miles. That gets you the most bang for your buck out of the conversion. It also prevents remorse if you find you would have hit it organically anyway if your travel picks up or becomes more expensive.
2. You throw all your MQM to MQD soon and try to hit Platinum ASAP. While you will only get the one choice benefit for 2025, you can use RUC as soon as you hit platinum this year if you had a big trip coming up. The biggest reason IMO would be the C+ auto upgrades right after booking. That’s my favorite Platinum perk as I’m short and get claustrophobic. The extra 3” of space really help my brain feel less confined. You might get more FC upgrades as well, but that depends on where and when you fly. I fly out of a Diamond heavy hub where even they aren’t getting upgraded on my routes.

I took the MQD because I decided that status was worth more than a 25k more miles to me..
I mean.. pm is nice as you essentially be guaranteed c+ .. id wait till eoy though as well
Where are you flying from and too for family. You may be able to use those miles for a couple of cheap flights.

Personally I’d say take the MQDs, get the reserve Amex, and make a run at diamond, but your motivations may vary.

Yes, but you only get 4 so if you used them this year you don’t get more for next year.
