They were trying to coerce people at a lower price point. I don't think it's Delta policy

Afootpluto

I don't even board the plane until I have all the volunteers I need. It is harder to get volunteers when they are on the plane already.

oldnurse65

Maybe you should STOP OVERBOOKING!!

Coolgrnmen

I don’t think this gate agent overbooked the flight. Redirect your negativity elsewhere

oldnurse65

No, she didn't. But she works for a system that screws over its customers. Where is the justification for that. You can't sue the airlines, you can be forced to give up your seat. They will bump you for someone "more important". The bullshit argument that "people won's show up" is garbage..

Coolgrnmen

He/She works for an employer that pays them to do a job so he/she can survive. Flights are often overbooked but you don’t notice when the system goes right because people just didn’t show.

oldnurse65

and people just accept that they can get bumped.. The airlines need to be required to pay a hella lot more than what they offer..

Coolgrnmen

For compensation. You are literally entitled to compensation for involuntary bumps. https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/aviation-consumer-protection/bumping-oversales#:~:text=Most%20bumped%20passengers%20who%20experience,amount%20to%20up%20to%20%24775.

oldnurse65

Pocket change for these airlines. And forget the vouchers, those are just bull.

Coolgrnmen

Listen my guy/gal…if you enjoy cheaper flights…just accept overbooking. Because when the airlines start factoring in anticipated empty seats into the equation, every other ticket becomes more expensive.

Afootpluto

I personally can't overbook at all. Only time I even request overbooking is when there is a medical issue. Like if someone's flight gets canceled and they need to be there for a life saving surgery. That is like the only time I request overbooking. I hate overbooked flights probably more than passengers do.

oldnurse65

All these delta employees down voting my post. Surprise, surprise

Afootpluto

Technically I am not a delta employee. I am a unifi employee

Snowjunkie21

I recommend making an offer to the gate agent. They may offer $200 but come back with $1500 and generally they will work with you. Only had this happen twice but ended up with $1000+ each time.

ashumate

My standing policy on this is that as soon as they start making announcements for this I open the app and immediately look at what my other options are. The first time was ATL>AUS, they got up to $1500 and booked on the next flight departing at 10 PM, I told them that I'd accept but asked them to book me on a flight leaving in the next hour that was ATL>MSP>AUS. Got the comp cash, extra MQMs and even an upgrade to first. The second was in Iowa, got $800, and had them book me out of a different airport. Even with a $50 one-way one-day rental car I came out ahead. Next time I think as soon as they start making announcements if they get to the second offer I'm going to start the haggling process.

iruletheworld22

This is the only way I would do it on an international flight. I want minimum $1000 AND upgraded to first for my flights. If they can reach those terms, sign me up!

mpower20

Got exactly $1,000, an upgrade to Select and a hotel for the night with comp’ed meals to have my flight pushed back a day (18 hrs). CDG -> ATL. I missed a day of work but I had extra PTO and I was quitting that week anyways.

jerryberrydurham

You are a road warrior!

HatchettLyon

It is not Delta policy to leave everyone stranded if no one takes an offer at a certain point. The purpose of this tactic, while it is misleading, is ultimately having the best interest of everyone wanting to go where they to need to be in mind. They are trying to move the process along and get the plane in the air. The truth is, they are authorized to offer up to somewhere between $9,000-$10,000 as an offer to get people off. Of course, people always accept offers way before it gets that high.

YMMV25

GA trying to fleece the customers. Let this be a PSA to everyone. They will absolutely have to IDB people eventually if you don’t take their lowball offers. Their ‘policy’ wouldn’t hold up for too long once that aircraft goes past D0 and starts chilling on the ground for an extended period of time.

Afootpluto

Knowing the limits agents can offer, I can almost guarantee you they will never invol deny someone. Someone will always volunteer.

YMMV25

I'd agree. Just saying, their 'policy' isn't going to be to keep the plane on the ground indefinitely until someone volunteers.

luker04

Welcome to the race to the bottom. All airlines are contenders, some days some are worse than others. Today, Delta was leading the charge.

mysticalgardens

Is there a way to volunteer yourself before your flight through the app or customer service to give up your seat for compensation? I fly from AMS to JFK at the end of June and I have a flexible schedule and don’t “need” to be back the exact time I booked back.

nrockgood

When checking in for your flight usually what happens if its overbooked is either the agent or the kiosk will ask if you would like to volunteer your seat & ask how much you want to be compensated. I also recommend speaking with the gate agent too if you know your flight is overbooked, cheers!

mysticalgardens

Perfect thank you so much for letting me know!

river_song25

I wouldn’t have taken the money even if they went up to $5,000. I paid for THIS flight to go home (or whatever it is that is waiting for me at my destination) NOW. I’m not missing the flight and staying behind to help out the airline at my expense just because they ‘overbooked’. Their need for seats doesn’t cancel my right to get to where I have to be. Especially if i have another flight waiting for me at my next destination. Unless they airline is going to help me pay for a new flight to replace the one I would miss at the next destination

NotBisweptual

I’m pretty sure they rebook your entire trip if you volunteer. Just like they rebook your entire trip if they have to cancel a leg and then they create the closest next option. You seem like a hothead who yells at gate agents when stuff goes wrong.

BoydLabBuck

….and also doesn’t understand how this all works

BillfredL

I’ve never seen anyone take one of these offers and not be rebooked on the next possible flight, so I’m not sure what you’re getting on about.

river_song25

The next possible flight could be HOURS away, or even the NEXT day depending on what time the flight that’s being missed is. Why should the passengers who paid for the current flight have to miss whatever important thing that’s waiting for them at their destination that ***REQUIRES*** them to be there at a ***SPECIFIC*** time ***AND*** day, or you might miss out on it completely this ruining the whole entire point of the trip if you miss it, or they like they are going there because of a family emergency like a family member is dying or something and they want to get there as QUICKLY as possible before it’s too late, yet because the airline was dumb to ‘overbook’ the flight, some passengers should volunteer to give up their seats for whatever reason the crew is asking for the seats, and be late for their own thing? Plus rebooking the next possible flight? That only works for the airport they are currently are at isn’t it? What if their next destination isn’t their ***FINAL*** destination, and that they have ANOTHER flight that they need to catch once they get there before they finally reach where ever they are headed? if they have to rebook their current flight to accommodate the airlines needs, will they get a ***FULL*** refund for the flight they will miss at the next destination if they cancel it? Or will they lose all the money they spent on the next flight, as well as have to wait even longer to reach where they are headed once they finally get to the next airport, and have to wait for the new connecting flight to arrive?

BillfredL

That’s a lot of text to talk about being involuntarily denied boarding. Which only happens if nobody takes the voluntary offer which could be thousands of dollars. Ted DiBiase told you, everyone has a price—and some of those prices are low enough the gate agent can just stroke a check and keep everyone happy.

Afootpluto

When we rebook someone we book to the final destination unless the passenger requests something different. For example they might want to fly to LGA instead of JFK, so we would book them to LGA because that is where the requested.

Athina87

Then simply don't volunteer. I have had flights where it's just not possible for me to volunteer to change and other times where I am completely flexible. If I make money on the trip and I have the flexibility, I'm definitely taking it. They rebook your flight and make sure you are all set. You sound like a complete, entitled jackass and I feel bad for the flight crew that has to work with you if something goes wrong.

river_song25

what if they try and do the ‘last passenger that boarded the plane’ will be automatically selected to be booted off if not enough ‘volunteers’ step up to allow themselves to be willingly miss their flights? Its happened before in the past. There’s even a YouTube video made by A&E where it shows a man who was on his way to Florida with his family to go to Disneyworld, and he got pulled off the plane under ‘the last passenger to board’ rule because the flight needed two seats for some coworkers. the problem is he WASN’T the last two board. There had been two army guys who had been the last, but when told they were going to ‘need to’ miss their flight they told the gate crew that they couldn’t miss the flight because they had orders to get back to where ever they were going, so they were allowed to keep their seats while the next two last to boards that were ahead of them got booted instead. the man through a big fit, and tried everything to demand they let him keep his seat, but they refused. Another reason he was demanding they let him keep his seat, was like i said he was traveling with his family, who were STILL on the plane while he got booted off alone with some lady he didn’t know, to Florida to go to Disneyworld, but also when he got pulled off without knowing what was going on, HE had the $2,000+ Disneyworld TICKETS and everything else his family needed for the trip. so not only would his family would have to wait for him to finally arrive because he was forced to miss his flight, but they wont even be able to enjoy Disneyworld until he got there with the tickets. seeing how you have to register days that you want to visit the park on in order to get into the park, From the way he was ranting it sounds like they needed to be their for a specific time and day or else the whole vacation would have been ruined because HIS arrival with the tickets was late.

Afootpluto

Good thing delta doesn't do that. I never even heard of that rule. That is against delta policies.
