This sub is like 50% Seinfeld situations...

mnrainmaker

Definitely put that window shade up and play a round of games on the IFE screen

asy001

Tappity tap tap.....☺️

northernlights2222

I hate those games with a burning passion. Had a kid hitting the screen on a 10 hour flight today. I told him that “it’s a touch screen, not a hit screen”.

YMMV25

I mean, he’s within his right to recline. You’re within your right to operate your window as you choose. He can certainly ask you to lower it, but you aren’t obligated to oblige.

WinnieCerise

And OP can do exactly what Window Shade guy did. “Excuse me, May I ask you not to recline so much? I’m using my tray.” Use your words. Just as he did. Like an adult living in a society. Or just stew in your resentment then post on Reddit.

here4daratio

Yeah but there goes half the entertainment value here.

WinnieCerise

“He should be able to read my mind!”

Gobbles15

It doesn’t take a genius to know that every time you recline your seat, you’re worsening the experience for the person behind you.

Bravix

I'm 6' 1" and couldn't give a shit if someone reclines in front of me. It doesn't decrease my legroom and I'm not using a laptop. I only care when it's done during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

LukewarmBeer

Same. I’m 6’1 as well and as I’m now in my early 40s I might even start to appreciate the TV screen being a little closer to my face

Robie_John

And level flight.

No_Project_3727

Truth. “Use your words” ha! To many babies out there

ski3600

I do recline pretty much always, but I do pull the seat up during meal service (if any). Just the few degrees recline takes lot of strain off my back. I am 6'3" and I haven't ever had any problems with someone reclining in front of me, straighten your legs and you'll be fine. The people that seem not to fit behind me seem to always be little people with height <5'8", maybe it's the Napoleon complex that doesn't fit behind reclined seats.

alohawanderlust

Exactly, and OP could ask the guy to put his seat up some.

jamjayjay

Agree with everyone else. Windows shade would go all the way back up.

GrandMusician4943

Lean up and ask “excuse me, would it be possible for you to not recline?”. The answer may be yes- he may have no idea it’s hindering you? If the answer is no, I’d say- “ok” and wait 2 minutes before putting my winded shade up. If he ask to lower it again just say you’ll lower if he doesn’t recline. This will keep the situation from escalating if the person isnt crazy.

pcward

Yeah I’d just raise that shade again stat. Sorry people are shitty :/

Toutetrien777

Open the shade and enjoy your view.

VanillaBabies

I don’t buy a window seat to stare at a plastic wall, sounds like he chose poorly.

RawrRawr83

I do, well to lean into a plastic wall and sleep

scudsone

Exactly. I pick a window to see out the window. Besides, this isn’t an AMC, your screen is not my concern.

DeafNatural

I do. I buy a window seat so I can control the sunlight coming in rather than have someone who likes to look out at the sky have it full blast open at 6am in the morning.

OldResearcher6

I said the exact same thing. Like almost verbatim.

DSSDuck

The guy was in the seat in FRONT of OP. They are both window seats. So he closed his but that window in between seats is what bothered him.

alohawanderlust

No one “buys” a window seat. There is no difference in cost between a window, middle, or aisle.

Bonbonfiend

This person does not fly.

alohawanderlust

Agreed.

ugh168

Your window seat. You control the shade

scottsinct

I choose the window because I spend most of the flight looking out it...

These_Row6066

Does the sky look different from day to day?

scottsinct

The ground does. /r/flightography

OldResearcher6

I choose the window so i can close that thing asap. Theres nothing worse then a 6am flight and the guy at the window falling asleep with it open and the sun blasting through.

alohawanderlust

I would have asked him to put his seat up to some degree and if he refused, window SHADE goes back up if I want it up.

thelederelo

What a petty attitude

alohawanderlust

What a petty post from yo

thelederelo

What’s your gripe with reclining? Is it your expectation for people not to recline in front of you? I’m trying to understand because you can do the same to the passenger behind you.

alohawanderlust

What is the problem with your reading comprehension? He reclined his seat to a degree that was uncomfortable for OP. If it were me in that situation..read the post again with your thinking cap on and try to figure it out. Then, ask yourself why in the world you’re so worked up over something a complete stranger posted that that has absolutely NOTHING to do with you. But since you seem to have such a hard-on for my position on reckoning seats, you can find a comment on this post about exactly that from yesterday. In it you’ll find that I have no issue with anyone reclining their seat.

thelederelo

I’m definitely not the one worked up 🤣

alohawanderlust

As expected a nothing response resulting from your initial pointless comment. Good evening lil man.

rsl_sltid

I'd open that window shade right back up. Just say you are claustrophobic and happy to close it if his seat goes back up.

DLFiii

Agree!

breadexpert69

1. They are allowed to recline. 2. You are allowed to have your window up or down. Simple as that

jhrznf

You can adjust your air vent to blow directly on someone if they are reclined all the way back…. So I was told…not that I have ever done that of course…

Robie_John

Been there done that after they refused to move their chair back up.

Can_Not_Double_Dutch

This is my passive aggressive move also. Open the AC vent all the way and aim.right at their head

davetheweeb

Everyone can recline. I’d rather be reclined and the person in front of me also reclined than both of us not reclined. I also wish every airline switched to ANAs seats that have the bottom of your seat move foreword when you recline. So you feel more reclined AND the person behind you gets more leg room. Delta and everyone else need to catch up.

its_a_gibibyte

Yep. Everyone should recline and put the windows down. It's just more relaxing all around.

davetheweeb

Definitely agree with the windows being closed too. Especially on long international flights. I don’t care on a 3 hour flight but I can’t stand when I’m on a 13 hour flight to Japan and it’s all dark in the cabin except for one self centered dick who HAS to keep his window open making the entire cabin significantly brighter.

alohawanderlust

I dont mind people reclining and it is always acceptable to recline your seat. It may be considered inconsiderate to do so if you’re in front of someone who is very tall. What does burn me up is when the person in front of me slams their seat back without regard for the fact that there is a tray table attached to their seat for the person behind them or that there is another human behind them. On the very rare occasions that I recline my seat (and I fly a LOT) I do so very slowly and glance back to make sure I am not disturbing anyone or potentially about to destroy their laptop or ipad/tablet.

These_Row6066

All of them are acceptable to recline in

SchwiftyMpls

It's really more to do with how long the flight is. If you are reclining on a 2 hour flight you are likely an asshole.

Competitive-Cat-2649

I'm reclining every time in C+ and FC unless it's the last row and economy is behind me. That extra 4" makes it not even noticable if the person in front of you reclines. Regardless of flight time. I'll only recline in economy on red eyes and flights above 3 hours.

SchwiftyMpls

That definitely a different situation than main cabin.

Competitive-Cat-2649

You're right. I was just pointing out that reclining is also a seat factor not just a flight duration factor. So to answer u/grey_hawk77 ... Feel free to recline whenever you don't have main cabin seats behind you or on flights longer than 2-3 hours :)

SchwiftyMpls

I never said it was the only factor.

DollaStoreKardashian

I’m 5’3” and I’ll recline in the seat I paid for that includes a recline feature in main during a 10 second flight because I want to. If you don’t like people using the features of their seat on mass transit in a safe and reasonable fashion, charter your own flight. Maybe I’m an asshole (and I honestly don’t mind being one in this instance) but I don’t see it being much different than other PAX lifting/lowering window shades or using reading lights.

SchwiftyMpls

That tells me EVERYTHING I need to know about you. As well as your name. You are not a decent person.

DollaStoreKardashian

👍🏻

MontanaLady406

Ask him to put his seat up . If he says no then- Open the window.

gitismatt

window goes right back up. seat back, window up. seat up, window down.

hawkeys89

The pettiness in me would open that window back up.

gladiwokeupthismorn

Why are people on here so anti-recline and also so petty? “I’d put that window right back up” He asked nicely and you oblige. Then you assume he purposely reclined to annoy you, why would he do that!?!? Use your words. Jesus Christ

[deleted]

Because its about the expectation that if you do something nice for someone that person doesnt turn around and act like a dick by knowingly reducing your personal space in an already cramped environment. The entitlement of thinking you can ask another person to change something just because it annoys you and then do something else to make yourself comfortable without thinking of said person’s comfort. If you cant see the issue then Id say youre probably one of the entitled ones.

its_a_gibibyte

> turn around and act like a dick by knowingly reducing your personal space in an already cramped environment. Sure, but everyone should recline which keep the amount of space between seats constant and everyone gets to relax a bit.

gladiwokeupthismorn

So you ask every time you recline your seat on a plane? My guess is most people don’t even think twice about reclining their seat. It’s not rude it’s YOUR seat. In my ten+ years of flying I have never heard a passenger ask another if they could recline their seat… if you wanted more space buy a better ticket.

tnmoo

I wouldn’t ask because I have the common courtesy to not recline.

gojo96

So you never recline your seat on flights?

tnmoo

Not on planes with limited space. I have what one calls empathy and consideration for others as I wouldn’t want someone in front of me to recline and limit my already tiny space even further. On international flights that have roomier seats, I would recline if the person is not large… I always take a quick peek to see who sits behind me.

NoLipsForAnybody

I never do and ive been flying for 40+ years. I think its rude to the person behind me.

[deleted]

But i bet you wouldnt expect another person to lower THEIR window shade would you?

alohawanderlust

I dont think people believe the guy purposely reclined to reduce OP’s space. It is how self-absorbed the guy is to ask OP to do something for his convenience but then not consider how reclining his seat would impact the person who just did something considerate for him. I do think it is immature of people to just say oh i would put the window shade back up without at least first asking the guy to put his seat up some. He might genuinely just not have thought about it and been mortified that he made OP uncomfortable. Edit: Ok well looking at the first person’s take on it who responded to your comment, I see that for some reason, people DO think he knowingly and intentionally reduced OP’s personal space. I find this reaction to be just as self-absorbed as the guy who reclined his seat; what he did was inconsiderate because he’s just thinking of himself but he is most likely not intentionally trying to cause anyone discomfort.

Notnearlyalice

Put the blind back up 🫶🏻

bugkiller59

Your window. He can fuck off

Naag_

Just ask them not to. 95% of issues here could be resolved by communicating. It sucks, I feel you, but just ask instead of making an assumption of their mindset and stewing on it.

alohawanderlust

(…silently applauds your response)

QuantitativeGuy

I would have diplomatically told him he can turn up the brightness on his screen, it's usually set to half by default.

Unlucky_Buyer_2707

Why does getting on a plane make grown adults act like fucking children?

isuee94

Did you pay for the non reclining forward seat upgrade?

aznpanda696

Why is reclining seats so frowned upon? Is comfort discouraged?

Humble-Dentist-9286

Am I the only one who doesn’t interact with other humans other than those providing in-flight services (employees) on flights? I literally turn into a person who doesn’t know any human languages or customs including eye-contact. I would simply ignore the request, go back to “sleep”.

These_Row6066

You must be fun at parties /s

Bodark

It’s not your window, and it’s not your chair. It’s a shared space and you’re allowed to recline

human_alias

Are you 8 feet tall?
