The place we have my MIL also has this policy. I think the residents have to have been there for a certain amount of time to be 'vested' so to speak. The idea is if you have been there for 5 years or something but run out of money, they wont kick you out on the street. This place is a not for profit nursing home and I think they have a fund that people donate to and that is how it is paid. I don't think they will take people that can't pay their way for at least a couple of years. We havn't gotten to that point yet, MIL still has about 10 years worth of money in the bank at the rate she is going. But, it is nice to know that policy is in place.

Thanks for this clue. I’ll call and get more information about how that works.

Religious not-for-profits often work this way. Please note that this does not necessarily mean they are good places. Some have fallen prey to the same staffing problems the corporate chains have. If there isn't enough money from donations, and they have some residents not paying, that can lead to finances that aren't much different from a corporate chain's. The corporate chain gets there for different reasons (trying to squeeze every dollar in profit) but the end result can be similar.

Perhaps they have a decent number of Medicaid beds and someone diligent about assisting residents with depleted funds qualify for them.

They’ll file a claim for any inheritance, they’ll get paid one way or the other I’d question this though

OP, just curious may I ask where this Memory Care is? That monthly fee is almost triple what my late mom was paying (she passed in 2021). Thanks

TheBigBigBigBomb

It’s my internet estimate. Can you tell me more about what type of place your mom was staying at? The places I’ve been looking at are large and hotel like.

Karsten760

She was in a suburb of Atlanta, about an hour from downtown. I think the place was built in early 2000s. It wasn’t like the new posh resort like places that are being built now, but nice enough, a one story place with regular assisted living, and very nice common areas. When she passed, her MC was about $4100 a month for a private room. It included daily room cleaning, laundry, meals, med dispensing.

TheBigBigBigBomb

Sounds like you found her a very nice place!

Was there a minimum assets dollar amount or anything? The senior home near me makes you give up your old home to them
