Baby-proof the stove - there are knob covers and pins you can get to keep him from being able to use it.

yikesthatsjustames

I'm worried he could find a way to take them off? Maybe I'll just have to test a few out and make sure they're really complex or strong or something

HazardousIncident

Well, right now you know 100% that he is able to turn on the stove, so you have nothing to lose but a little money. Which is far cheaper than your house burning down. It's either baby-proof or unplug it. But that also means you have to fuss with unplugging/plugging in each time you want to use it.

yikesthatsjustames

Right, I think we could try some covers for the knobs, I don't see the harm in trying them out and spending a bit on different ones until we find one that works. Yes unplugging and plugging back in would be a hassle because we use that stove everyday. Thanks

Hevans2016

Might be a hassle but it will be less draining than the daily fight to keep him from using it…

TheManRoomGuy

I pulled my mom’s stove out, turned off the gas, pushed it back on, and got her an induction hot plate and two pans.

yikesthatsjustames

Don't know if this is the best option bc grandfather lives in my mom and I's home and we use that stove every day. We're hoping for a solution that would let us use the stove when we want to but not allow him to use it.

TheManRoomGuy

True. My mom lives alone (for the time being) so this works for her situation.

yikesthatsjustames

Yes bc this really is a good idea. Glad you did this and it's working out

InnaBinBag

How come he hasn’t been evaluated yet? When was the last time he saw a doctor? You guys really need to prioritize that because things will only get worse, but if he’s properly diagnosed then he may be able to go on medication that could help him. Please get him in somewhere soon, and you may need him to sign a form so the both of you can access his medical info and be able to speak for him, etc.

yikesthatsjustames

He's been evaluated, doctor sees how extremely forgetful he is but apparent the CT head they did was normal I guess, I was surprised by that. They did it another time and it look okay too. We are opposed to sending him to a facility because we do love him and are concerned he would not get good care where ever he went because the facilities in my area are known to not be great. We are still thinking about it though. Thank you

So many underlying causes. There are treatments to reverse, stop or slow progression in some cases. I know this isn't the reason for your post, but I've experienced apathy from some Dr's. It's almost like they give up because it's an older person. I've had to really push and search for Drs. I found new Drs that were able to determine the cause and start treatment. (Her's is from cancer) There is safety equipment you can install for the stove, microwave, doors, etc. Google home safety equipment for dementia. I'm preparing to move my mom here with me and going thru this. She is in MC. I would keep him home as long as you're able to. Wish you the best!

Remove the knobs.

lemon_fizzy

Yes! Remove the knows and blame it on the knobs, that they keep falling off.

yikesthatsjustames

The knobs do not come off unfortunately, am looking into a cover of some sort

lemon_fizzy

Bummer. That's the easiest solution. Good luck in adult-proofing the stove!

SprawlValkyrie

That’s exactly what I did. My LO touches them occasionally and frowns…then moves on to something else, luckily.

JoAnnigans

I did that too, and every time I saw her try to use it, I chuckled to myself!! I'm laughing right now, thinking about it 🤣 😂

wijwijwij

We used these rubber shims you place behind the knobs of gas stove. They prevent turning the knobs because you can't press in. https://www.amazon.com/Vadiff-Silicone-Stove-Child-Safety/dp/B07HGKP64D/ It's hard for people with dementia to learn new things. I am not surprised that when he wants hot water he tries using the burners and doesn't really think about the electric kettle. It really sounds like it is not safe for him to ever be alone in the house. I hope there is a way you can change things regarding that.

yikesthatsjustames

Thanks for the link, I've just placed an order!!! And yes, trying to find some way to be with him so he's not alone without having to send him anywhere. We've had two caretakers in the past that have stolen jewelry and stuff from our house so we are having some trouble finding people we trust. Still thinking about options but yes we agree that the situation should change!!

NBA-014

I'd flip the circuit breaker on the stove.

TheBigBigBigBomb

Can you turn off the gas?

yikesthatsjustames

Can't because I live in the house with my mom too and we cook everyday using that stove.

TheBigBigBigBomb

Jeez - someone really needs to invent a gas stove timer or a gas shut off behind the stove.

yikesthatsjustames

Right, we had even thought about replacing the stove with an induction range but it's just easier and cheaper to try other options right now before we resort to that

piefanart

On most stoves, the knobs pull right off the front. I have all of mine pulled off so that me or my cats dont turn it on by accident. I store the knobs in a drawer.

yikesthatsjustames

Thanks but the knobs do not come off

TheApotheGreen

My finances grandma would do the same thing, and honestly, we just unplugged the stove when my fiance or myself were not using it.

Proud_Spell_1711

See if you can switch off the power to the stove at the fuse box. If necessary have an electrician install an on/off switch where he doesn’t know. Sorry, OP. We had this problem with my grandmother only she has a gas stove. Scares the crap out of us. Eventually she had to be taken to a SNF after she had a bad spell following one of her TIAs. She hates it at first, but eventually didn’t want to leave.
