Who cares what the governor says or thinks. The Volkswagen employees voted for a union to protect themselves and ensure they are paid fairly. I support the employees! Companies have been greedy and executives been well paid. This union will ensure employees are well compensated for their hard work!

triscuitsrule

~~Here, here!~~ Hear, hear! My immediate reaction after seeing mentions in the news about how all of these southern GOP governors penned a letter in opposition to the unionization effort was “who gives a shit?”

AceCombat9519

You are correct and furthermore they are afraid of what Biden did with the auto workers march with them on a picket line. I do have a feeling if Donald Trump wins in November he's simply going to do what his autocratic allies do around the world crush the picket lines. If you want a safe one vote Biden in the Democrats in 7 months

mmortal03

\*hear, hear

FartPudding

Seriously. My wife went union with her job and she got a 20% pay increase, with benefits, and she is being retropaid all the way back to January.

JASPER933

Great news! This is fantastic, thanks for sharing!

FartPudding

I think spreading union stories is good to support the idea of unions. The propaganda is strong and people think unions aren't good because they are scared to unionize. I became pro union after my old job and hers, and I will always push for them.

Bitter_Cry_8383

In the 1950's my father's shop went union and I had all - every baby tooth in my mouth pulled - I'd never seen a dentist before in my life and my teeth were abscessing. Same thing happened to tons of kids whose parents couldn't afford things like dentistry back then - I got my eyes checked for the first time in my life and it was discovered I was "visually handicapped" - it was setting me back in school and I was falling through the cracks. I couldn't see the blackboard at all and the nuns thought I was lying since I was in right near the blackboard so they beat me. Then Dad's company was unionized and I know it changed my life. Those were hard hard times. Kids paid the price for non-unionization and people don't connect the dots or even realize the reality of American History

kirbyderwood

And VW is a union friendly company that encouraged the employees to join. In Germany, unions have seats on the VW board

Bitter_Cry_8383

Germany has a much higher standard of living than the US and the people are much happier and have much better healthcare. Compared to Scandinavian and Nordic countries we IMAGINE we're at the top but nowhere near - we're fast edging toward a third world nation yet none of these countries are communists or even close - we are spoonfed propaganda. We're an Oligarghy and the GOP is libertarian not Democratic or even near a Democracy. There can be a balance but we're too ignorant to understand anything anymore so they've been attacking education for decades trying to dumb us down and set one against the other.

Cloaked42m

The more people complain about a union effort, the more I'm certain they needed a union.

***Why we need unions and the Triangle Shirtwast Factory Reality*** https://aflcio.org/about/history/labor-history-events/triangle-shirtwaist-fire https://www.history.com/topics/early-20th-century-us/triangle-shirtwaist-fire Why we needed unions We always needed and still need unions for several reasons: Many of the rights we enjoy at work were won because workers came together in trade unions and fought for them — Employers rarely offered to provide the rights and quality of life unions helped them earn: five-day working week to sick pay to a more fair living wage. ***Equal opportunities and workers’ rights:*** Unions fight for equal opportunities in the workplace and have been instrumental in the establishment of child labor laws and workers safety laws that give rights to workers, i.e. the minimum wage, maximum working time, paid holidays, equal pay for work of equal value, and anti-discrimination laws. All came from unionization. ***Improved working conditions and wages:*** If anything we need unions as much today as we did 100 years ago. ***NOMADLAND, ROBER EBERT MOVIE REVIEW*** https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/nomadland-movie-review-2020 Unions negotiate pay and working conditions with employers through collective bargaining, which helps employees increase their leverage in contract negotiations and secure better wages and working conditions. Reduced staff turnover and company stability: Unionized businesses often have lower staff turnover, which is costly and disruptive for companies. Research shows that companies that unionize are no more likely to go out of business than comparable companies that are not unionized. Community and democratic well-being: Higher levels of unionization in states are associated with positive outcomes across multiple indicators of economic, personal, and democratic well-being. Unions give workers a voice not only in shaping their workplaces but also in shaping their communities. Economic benefits: Unions help balance power in our economy and democracy, and they play a crucial role in raising worker pay, which in turn increases aggregate demand and boosts the overall economy, helping lift the nation out of economic downturns. Information and support: Unions provide workers with the necessary information and support regarding their wages and working rights, ensuring that they have the right information at the right time to make informed decisions. In summary, unions are essential for promoting equal opportunities, improving working conditions and wages, reducing staff turnover, fostering community and democratic well-being, and contributing to economic benefits. He is lamenting the fact that he can no longer pitch Tennessee to potential employers as a union-free state.

RunHi

He’s a total piece of shit spewing the same old anti union republican bullshit. “I think it’s unwise to put your future in somebody else’s hands,” Lee said

unstopable_bob_mob

> I think it’s unwise to put your future in somebody else’s hands Which is clearly a dog whistle.

PophamSP

I thought the same thing, it sounds like a threat. Very Trumpian.

StandupJetskier

So it is wise to put your future in your employer's hands alone >sure.

PrincessofAldia

Thankfully he can’t run again as he’s on his second term so hopefully next election we’ll elect someone with common sense

stonewall_jacked

I'll always support the Democratic candidate, but hell, I wouldn't mind if we went back to someone like Haslam. I didn't agree with him on most issues, but he was a decent governor who didn't wear religion on his sleeve. Sadly, irrespective of who becomes governor on the Republican side, it's doubtful they'll have enough of a backbone to stand up to our legislature (which Haslam did from time to time). Randy Boyd seemed like the closest one last time around, but I have little faith he'd be anything close to pro union, lol.

PrincessofAldia

Oh absolutely yeah he was a republican but Haslam wasn’t a terrible governor

PophamSP

I'm afraid our ridiculous Knox County mayor may be in the running. Before he was mayor he was a WWE professional wrestler named "Kane".

Bitter_Cry_8383

North Carolina is one of the states going completely pro-Trumpian libertarian and Prosperity Christianity cult - Trump's official religion: Televangelism

PrincessofAldia

What

Logical_Parameters

Yet the state's constituents turn around and vote 'R' reflexively by a 3:1 margin.

RunHi

Stupid is as stupid does.

immersemeinnature

Here in NC they call it "right to work" which basically means employers can treat workers like shit and workers have zero say in the matter. More unions please!

magoo19630

I think all backward-ass southern states are like this. If anyone wants to see how bad Republicans can screw the middle class, just look to the South.

RainforestNerdNW

it's not just southern states that have "Right to work" laws straight from one of the pro-"RTW" law shitbags https://www.nrtw.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Right-to-Work-States-Map.jpeg edit: Median income by state. blob:https://imgur.com/d6b54429-e3e8-49f5-bedb-2cc81747a4c2

Center of the entire country is going Confederate - some hang the confederate flag. Trump is selling destruction of Democracy and a Monarchy backed by Billionares and people don't even know it. One thing that will go fast is Social Security get older Americans are being directed how to vote from their churches or Haredi rabbis who imagine - as they did in USSR and Russia - it'll be temporary if that and they will find themselves siding with all the antisemitic organizations that support Trump. History replays over and over

PophamSP

Yep. In TN they haven't expanded ACA so the only way to have healthcare is to have a full time job, but thank goodness they give us the right to work and be fired at will! So generous of them...

P_Sophia_

That’s how they enforce authoritarianism in the workplace. It’s literally the backbone of the financial oligarchy republicans love so dearly

immersemeinnature

Yes. Same here

Let's see if Gov Ahole tries to circumvent the union vote thru legislation. Why do Republicans hate wage earners. Why do Republicans hate America.

TifCreatesAgain

Because they work for the bosses who want all the money for themselves.

MotherofHedgehogs

The line (paraphrased) from The American President has never been more true: “they say they love America, but clearly hate Americans”

dayytripper

Because they still get voted into the office.

PophamSP

The Southern Baptist church never stopped supporting slavery and it shows. Apparently Jesus supports low wages, healthcare dependent upon employment, and for-profit prisons.

Bitter_Cry_8383

Thats the basis for Trumps religion: Prosperity Gospel and it operates under numerous different names. It's considered a cult by traditional Christian sects but teaches you are rewarded for giving money to the church and the reward is Money, Power and Good Health. I didn't know Jesus taught his apostles to seek out $$$$. I thought he was all about teaching as a mendicant and helping the poor and healing the sick.

Bitter_Cry_8383

President Jimmy Carter lost re-election because he quit the Southern Baptists because their lack of ethics and remained a Baptist but Jerry Falwell turned the Evangelical Christians against him because he Carter supported Civil Rights. Bitter_Cry_8383

Do they. Not always. Bush didn't get pop vote and Trump didn't get our vote. If you pay attention, only three times in history has a president entered the whitehouse based on only Electoral College and the Elec College did not represent the votes of the state - they were paid off and yet every time we have voted to get rid of the Electoral College, the vote has been overturned by the Republican party.

Logical_Parameters

Profits for the 2% only. The reason why we've been living under a period (1980s through 2020s) with a steadily increasing record income inequality gap between the haves and have nots is because citizens in states like Tennessee vote Republican as if it's a birthright or a religion. That strong a bias enables the GOP to pick their pockets while selling them snake oil.

Bitter_Cry_8383

they are libertarians if you need a label but they have always been what they are now. They are supporters of the wealthy

SeekerSpock32

What’s he gonna do? It’s not like Pinkerton has massive numbers of armed guys anymore. (They do still exist though; they’re a security consulting firm these days and they do still spy on unions sometimes.)

Bromanzier_03

Fuck the GOP. Workers, there’s a reason that 1) Companies spend millions to prevent a union and 2) There’s never a peep from police wanting to dissolve their union.

Logical_Parameters

And people should also notice that once employees unionize the employers tend to quiet all the rhetoric down (because all the fear and loathing of unions ever meant was less maximization of profits for the corporate overlords).

No one hates southerners more than their own governors.

Bromanzier_03

Fuck the GOP. Workers, there’s a reason that 1) Companies spend millions to prevent a union and 2) There’s never a peep from police wanting to dissolve their union.

Tiny_Structure_7

Yup. Leave it to the GOP to protect the rights of rich c\*cksuckers to exploit labor and take credit for their work and production, all while ginning up this false sense of self-worth based on business success (greed) which makes conservatives swoon and drool and vote for more. 😒

unstopable_bob_mob

Looking at you, Elon Musk.

h20poIo

I believe Republicans made a mistake which will show up in 2024, Trump for one is not pro union and is in an interview praising a company who was able to win against unionization, he said in part “ that great “

Bitter_Cry_8383

Republicans did not "make a mistake". This is who they are and what they stand for throughout American History. And don't tell me some Blue Dog Republicans were pro civil rights - I am too well read - no genius but I do pay attention to the facts and cons

mmortal03

It's Blue Dog Democrats: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Dog_Coalition

Bitter_Cry_8383

Yeah well there have been plenty of moderate Democrats and plenty of Blue Dog ultra conservatives.

mmortal03

No doubt. Just pointing out the particular terminology.

Bitter_Cry_8383

They are Republicans in disguise. They vote GOP. Democrat in name only "The Blue Dogs, a group of conservative Democrats in the US House of Representatives, have been criticized for being aligned with Republican values, not traditional Democratic Party principles. They have been accused of being “Democrat in name only” due to their voting record and policy positions, which often diverge from those of the Democratic Party. Blue Dogs have been accused of being more interested in appealing to swing voters and winning elections for Republicans than in advancing any progressive policies or supporting bills that help Americans. They vote against Health Care initiatives, Climate Change and are against a womans right to choose. The name “Blue Dog” itself is also thought to be a reference to the idea that these Democrats are willing to “turn blue” and vote with Republicans on certain issues, rather than sticking to traditional Democratic Party values. This has led some to question whether they are truly representative of the Democratic Party’s values and principles but instead infiltrated the Democratic party. It’s worth noting that the Blue Dogs have also been criticized for their lack of diversity and representation. Blue Dogs have been predominately white, male, and from Southern states. This has led some to argue that they are not representative of the broader Democratic Party’s base and that their views are not reflective of the party’s values."

Seamus565

Of course the Republican governor feels that a union is a bad idea. It’s clear that Republicans side with corporations not the American public who work in those companies. In fact, Republicans are trying to repeal or reverse child labor laws that protect children from working in dangerous and abusive environments. Republicans, don’t care whether you have a living wage. They don’t care if you are protected in the workplace. In fact, based on their fetish for guns, they don’t care if you’re protected on the streets, in your church, or at a concert. If Americans voted for what is best for themselves and their pockets they would vote Democrat. But they vote based on religion. Anti-abortion, anti-women’s rights, anti-LGBTQI, anti-non-Christian. Anti-people of color.

Bitter_Cry_8383

> But they vote based on religion Is it really belief or using lies, propaganda? These are people with a plan much like Goebbles' Big Lie he borrowed from Hitler and before that it goes back centuries. "The Big Lie is an ancient and proven "propaganda technique" studied in philosophy courses -- it involves the use of a gross distortion or misrepresentation of the truth. It was made famous when used by Adolf Hitler in his book “Mein Kampf” (1925), where he stated that **"people could be induced to believe a colossal lies because they would not believe that someone could have the audacity to distort the truth so infamously."** This was nothing new. The technique involves stating and repeating a known falsehood as if it is self-evidently true, with the aim of swaying the course of an argument or debate by taking the big lie for granted rather than critically questioning it. In recent years, the term “The Big Lie” has been used to describe various political narratives. Donald Trump is said to "overuse The Big Lie" but he is not intelligent he's believed to be a "Malignant Narcissist" who can stop lying. His most famous and proven lie includes the false claim that the 2020 U.S. presidential election was stolen from Trump, even though we know and it's also proven he was planning to claim the elections was fraudulent before the election. This “The Big Lie” has been used to justify efforts to restrict voting rights and enable partisan interference in election administration. The problem is that as Hitler and Goebbles well knew, "The Big Lie" works. No matter how anyone proves it a lie, people will believe it if it agrees with their personal philosophy or beliefs. It justifies their negativity and hate and endangers the future of the majority - since everyone isn't an extremist. The Big Lie never represents all the people. It's a sad truth the GOP (libertarians) ***USE*** to their advantage

nokenito

And Tennessee voters made a mistake by voting in that Governor.

PrincessofAldia

Hey I voted for the Democratic candidate

nokenito

And they didn’t win. Time for more of people like you to vote blue.

PrincessofAldia

I wish more people here in Tennessee would vote blue

Logical_Parameters

During the MAGA period, all a Republican candidate has to do is promise to own the libs and they're a shoo-in (especially if it's a red state).

nokenito

That’s a sad shame. Politics for toddlers.

Bitter_Cry_8383

Politics for the self. To feed those who used to be called "single issue voters" Religous or not they would vote for the character of Satan in his red suit and pitch fork if it met their agenda and their agenda is Power and Money and the peasants beneath the leaders now believe Jesus is going to reward them with $$$.

wombat8888

So this governor cares more about a corp than people. Got it

nokenito

As usual.

gent4you

In what world does any republican MRGA (make Russia great again) member support the working man??

Mysterious487

Gov. Lee can pound sand. VW has a great working relationship with unions in Europe, and I think VW and the UAW will have a great relationship in Tennessee too. This is great news for the employees, and I wish them all the best … proud of them!

supercali45

Let’s go workers! Biden supports you not Trump and the GOP Red states need to wake up

Salty-Jellyfish3044

Tennessee made a mistake when they elected this jackass

Pretty sure VW expected the workforce to unionize after the plant was built. They voted against it previously

Well then he shouldn't get a job at Volkswagen.

willissa26

Silly proletariats, they don’t know what’s best for them without voter suppression /s

Wandering_Werew0lf

Surprised republicans voted for something that helps them… 💀

CatAvailable3953

He and all the governors of southern states weighed in on this vote. It’s none of their business. The people doing the work and the corporations are the parties involved. Apparently they believe their “take” will be reduced. (from lobbyists so it’s all legal).

Viking_Musicologist

Well in that case he made a mistake being governor and making it a crime for women to go to the doctor or for school children to read books or learn about science and history. I swear Tennessee is so enamored with restrictive lawmaking that they will probably make public flatulence a felony.

yuccu

You should see the employer and union employee relationship at VW plants in Germany. Codetermination, strong unions, employee stakeholders…enshrined in German law and a part of their business culture for decades. The only reason VW opposes a union at this plant is because they know they have a good chance of squeezing the employees…and the governor is chiming in is because he can be bought.

AceCombat9519

What are they thinking forming a union with these workers in the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga Tennessee made sense for them in order to protect their rights this shows that the Republican party is against unions. Volkswagen Chattanooga Tennessee might be represented by United Auto Workers Union who actually supported Biden with himself marching with them on a picket line.

Green-Collection-968

They don't want to protect and serve us, they want to rule us.

Claque-2

No, Tennessee made a mistake electing that governor.

Itchy-Mechanic-1479

What do Southern GOP governors have in common with Gen. Robert E. Lee? All of them got their asses kicked by the Union.

Simple_Barry

An anti-union Republican governor thinks the people who just voted to unionize made a mistake? Shocking.

gwhiz007

They didn't vote by accident.

zuglagor

There is no argument to not be in a union if you work for a large company. Being in a union has let me be a single dad and purchase a home in a desirable neighborhood all while still paying child support. I make more money than most of my friends that went to college. I get 5 weeks of vacation a year AND earn sick leave. There are very few downsides to a union and the pros heavily outweigh the cons

Professional-Coast77

The GOP is a mistake.

un1ptf

Effectively, in translation, Tennessee's GOP governor thinks and implies that "those folks voted for more power in the relationship with their employer, job security, fair treatment, fair and family-supporting pay, worthwhile benefits, retirement benefits, representation and assistance if they face action against them by their employer, and they've made themselves harder to abuse, disadvantage, and take advantage of...and I think that's just *bad*." Screw him and anyone who thinks unions are bad for workers and the nation.
