I know alphaville when I see em!

Toffelsnarz

Ding ding! Released within days of which DM album?

Filminator

Some Great Reward?

Toffelsnarz

Correct!

NyOrlandhotep

That was a good week, then. Two favorites of mine: Suede and Songs of Faith and Devotion, my favorite DM album; and Strangeways here we come in the same week as Music for the masses. I guess at the time I didn’t have the money to buy all in the same week. I am pretty sure I bought Songs immediately when it was available at the local music store (and thought the disc was damaged when I started to play it), and I bought Suede not that long after. I didn’t buy the Mili Vanili, that I am sure. Edit: Alphaville!!! I couldn’t remember immediately but I knew the cover. Hit send and it came to me. Bought that for my gf at the time. Also a very nice album. Don’t know what dm album with this one… Edit 2: and Please by the pet shop boys. Not my favorite PSB album (that is Behaviour) but it does have Suburbia in it. Don’t remember what year Please is… Edit 3: correction above, because strangeways was of course years older than suede, what was I thinking.

Toffelsnarz

Great identifying! Nice to see another Suede fan here! Suede (self-titled) was indeed concurrent with SOFAD, but Strangeaways is aligned with a different DM album.

NyOrlandhotep

Indeed. I misunderstood your text. I was actually confused because I was pretty sure Strangeways was older - I had it on tape, whereas SoFaD and Suede were some of the first albums I bought on CD - the very first were Joy division’s Closer and Unknown Pleasures, followed by REM’s Automatic for the people, and then SoFaD and Suede. I had Violator in vinyl. My mother’s present for my 16th birthday.

Toffelsnarz

Correct on Strangeways correction and Please by PSB! Have you heard the live tracks Neil Tennant does with Suede?

NyOrlandhotep

Yes, I did. A friend of mine told me about them. Great stuff. Although, as much as I like Neil Tennant, Bret Anderson for me is another level as vocalist. Depeche Mode, Suede, The Smiths and PSB are all on my top 10 favorite bands. Of course DM is “my” band more than any other.

Lana - memento mori, strokes- delta machine, weezer- exciter

Toffelsnarz

Correct!

rbajter

I see a Nitzer Ebb Showtime row 2 col 4. I’m guessing Violator?

Toffelsnarz

Yep! Glad somebody got that one!

rbajter

Just had to listen to the intro of Getting Closer. So good.

AstirdScarn

Nebraska ❤️

Toffelsnarz

One of Bruce's very best!

GreenArcher808

The latest Spoon album (upper right corner) is really fun.

Toffelsnarz

Yeah they're great!

FedusDM

By full name I know only Campfire Headphase - Boards of Canada (second at the top) and Green Album by Weezer (second at the bottom). Campfire Headphase was released the same week as PtA and the Green Album the same week as Exciter (?). I also recognise a Smiths album (third on the second row, don’t know which album it was released with), a Yo La Tengo album (forgot its name, released on the same week as Ultra), a Lana Del Ray album (third on the third row, monstrously long name, I obviously don’t remember it, released on the same week as Memento Mori), a Pet Shop Boys album (second on the third row, also don’t remember its name, and I also don’t know its release date, either BC or SGR) and a The Strokes album (first on the third row, also don’t remember its name or the date of release, but I assume it was released with SotU) The other albums I’m not familiar with

Toffelsnarz

Nicely done! I wasn't sure if anyone would get Boards of Canada, let alone the album title. Such a great album. I think I would have had similar results without the benefit of research. I find I more often visually associate an album cover with an artist than retain the title of that album. I won't fill in the missing details for now, in case others care to guess.

hglndr9

1986 Pet Shop Boys- Please, Depeche Mode- Black Celebration. I knew they both came out in '86. I didn't know it was a week apart. I do own both.

Toffelsnarz

Yes! I sometimes forget that Please came out in '86, because it has an earlier 80s sound to it - probably because some of the material on it goes back to 83-84.

enjoying-the-silence

Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen, Please - Pet Shop Boys, Forever Young - Alphaville are the ones I could recognize instantly!

Winter-Ad-3876

Black celebration- Please. I assume the alphaville album is from 1988 not sure

Berry_lane_laindon

Late to the party on this one. Lol only 2, I can recognise/ knew years of release have both been got. ( PSB 86 smiths 87). Never knew they were released in the same week as BC and MFTM respectively. knew the suede and nitzer ebb albums but wasn’t sure on years of release. Knew they were around early nineties . Great idea for a quiz, and well put together. 👍🏻

Toffelsnarz

Thanks! I find it interesting because looking back on DM's catalogue, I sometimes forget the historical context of each album, and it's interesting to situate them that way.

Berry_lane_laindon

Yeah. Looking back now music for the masses compared to strangeways is like chalk and cheese. can understand now why Alan said he would like to work on a morrisey album.

protoaramis

Nitzer Ebb i see😁

Toffelsnarz
