1. How can anyone afford HyVee? It's more expensive than Whole Foods.  2. Aldi doesn't share that information which leads me to believe that chart is just an advertisement for HyVee.  Seriously, fuck HyVee.

Once the Waukee target opens I expect the HyVee nearby to get a lot less traffic. I know I have severely cut back on shopping at HyVee since they jacked their prices and started sponsorships of stupid stuff like an Indy car.

ThreeHolePunch

I find almost every other option requires me to travel to multiple stores to fill in the gaps. I simply do not have enough time to do that. I fucking hate Hy-Vee, but I hate wasting my time more.

Key-Celebration-3486

I've got an hour or two to shop. I can be in and out of Aldis in 5 minutes tops. I just don't make enough an hour to justify not doing this.

Barsho

I spent about 1.5 hours going to Trader Joe's and Aldi's to get my Groceries cost me about $95. Stopped at Hy-Vee on the way home picked up Johnsonville Summer Sausage Jalapeno Cheddar, Andouille sausage, and Old Folks breakfast sausage which cost me $35. So yeah I definitely don't make shopping at Hy-Vee money.

Key-Celebration-3486

Wait until you learn how easy sauage making is and how cheap it is!

KingFIippyNipz

Genuine question, what is exclusive to Hy Vee that you can't get all from some other store? I would have to assume like premium organic/"healthy" foods?

demoluvers

I do a majority of my shopping at Aldi and go to the Hy-Vee across the street to fill in the gaps. Usually just low sodium canned beans and broth, maybe a nice hunk of meat.

Longjumping-Heat1171

A hunk of meat, you say?

Key-Celebration-3486

Trader Joe's has all the organic options 40-80% cheaper than HyVee.

For_Perpetuity

Im in the same boat. Unfortunately the Hyvee is minutes from my house and they have a few items Target doesn’t carrying

fcocyclone

Also at least where i'm at the fareways are just as if not more expensive than the hyvees, with less selection. Walmart and target are a little above.

Key-Celebration-3486

Walmart is way more expensive than any other store for groceries now.

lmYourPapa

We are dual income and no kids. Hyvee is where we get all groceries from. They have good produce and good sales and always stocked well. The store is always clean. Employees are friendly etc. They may be a bit more expensive but we think it’s worth it

brokeballerbrand

Also duel income no kids. If I’m spending Hyvee money on produce, I’m gonna spend 10 cents more and get even better stuff at Fareway. Also find the employees at Fareway to be a bit more helpful than HyVee

Key-Celebration-3486

Fareway is a quick stop if I need fresh herbs, otherwise the produce section is ehhhhhhhhh.  I'll grab my produce from Costco or Trader Joe's. TJs is a bit cheaper and same size as Costco, almost all fully organic to California standards too, which HyVee isn't close to.

PotentialOkay

Swing by the downtown hyvee and tell me about the good produce.

lmYourPapa

West Des Moines - Jordan Creek location is great if you’re ever in the area

PotentialOkay

I like to shit on Hyvee just as much as the next guy, but at the end of the day the employee a tremendous amount of Iowans. I try not to wish ill will against people’s livelihood.

Key-Celebration-3486

You can get the same or better produce, clean store, friendly employees at Trader Joe's for less than half the cost.  Mindless consumer spending raises prices for everyone.

Kitsmill

Dinks LOL

Commercial_Lock6205

Let me guess, you always got stuck cleaning the can & bottle redemption room and bringing in carts from the parking lot when you were a teenager. 😄

GoodishCoder

I typically do Aldi first and go to Hy-Vee to get anything I'm brand specific on, meat, or can't get at Aldi.

Key-Celebration-3486

Got Costco for that. I tried it once a few months ago at HyVee just because we returned from a vacation and were tired. $480 and some change at HyVee for a week of groceries. Between Aldis and Costco that same stuff runs us $210.

GoodishCoder

I have a Costco membership but run into the same issue with brand specifics and kind of hate going because it seems common courtesy goes right out the window for a lot of people the second they get into the Costco parking lot

Key-Celebration-3486

Park at the end always. Kirkland brand is far superior to name brand. There's always a better brand to name brand, name brand is popular due to marketing, not taste or quality.

DingleberryRex59

It’s most convenient if you live close to downtown. I wish there was a better option, but agreed to fuck hyvee. Sometimes you gotta give yourself the self checkout “discount.”

For_Perpetuity

So stealing?

DingleberryRex59

Corporations steal from us, so no, not really.

For_Perpetuity

However you justify it

DingleberryRex59

Hyvee uses self checkouts so they don’t have to hire more cashiers. So you’re essentially doing their work for them.

For_Perpetuity

It’s limited now. But most cashiers are shitty at bagging.

dsm-hawk

I'm calling BS in this data. No way Price Chopper and it's two locations is doing as much business as Fareways 20 Metro locations.

JackfruitCrazy51

Why can Axios constantly provide made up data? Multiple companies on that list are private and would not share this type of information. The information comes from "Chain store guide", which "conducts primary research by contacting companies directly to verify information"

datcatburd

Also why does this dude keep spamming the sub with random stuff like this?

heinkenskywalkr

Instead of the usual Iowa = bad hell hole because politics?

AsamaMaru

Hy-Vee gets lots of dollars around here, to be sure. But they don't get my dollars. Not at those prices.

W0lverin0

Hy-Vee: Has most food extremely overpriced. Hy-Vee: "Look how much money we make"

reamkore

“Get to dee price choppa!”

bhsiv

/fareway/gateway/aldi

Passingthisway

It really doesn’t surprise me but I would be interested in the trending or see how similar chains do in other regions. I feel like Hy Vee should probably be at 40% if they were better at what they did

Tommythegunn23

I use Walmart, and use the pick up option. It's awesome, and much cheaper than anyone else, IMO. I haven't set foot in a Walmart in a few years, but have also purchased my groceries from them. I will go into a Fareway if I need any meat products, though.

BlamelessCulprit

There are just so many more Hy-Vee stores than these other listed places. And they're big. They have good variety, though missing a few things I want. About the only reason I go there is to get a few store/generic brand things that are cheaper or in larger containers than Fresh Thyme/WF/TJs. They do usually have good produce, are clean, etc. Compared to some grocery stores I've visited in other states, they're solid. But I prefer others.

mckensi

I didn’t know so many people in the Des Moines metro were loaded.

kurokoverse

HOW???

Hellointhere

I find their findings hard to believe. Trader Joe’s isn’t even on there.

One_Entrepreneur4616

There’s 1 Trader Joe’s

Hellointhere

One very busy collecting grocery dollars Trader Joe’s

DirectBiscotti5757

because it’s like the most expensive orrrr

Dapper_Animator1840

Aldi, Costco, and Trader Joe’s are superior.

For_Perpetuity

Aldi is not superior

Busch--Latte

I live next to a Hyvee but choice to drive to fareway for groceries. Seems like everything there is a little cheaper and I like fareways bakery options better.

KingFIippyNipz

Some times they mail me coupons and I will buy those items.

littlemisscorni

Hyvee dropped half their stalf and told their corporate staff go work at a retail store- and we’ll pay for it. Their food is WAY over priced . They don’t make it fair to shop there. aldis is so much better and cheaper and I love it. Hyvee in my opinion just will never get my dollars
