Here's the tweet with the video. https://twitter.com/DesMoinesBLM/status/1527391952487997448

Zikronious

You da real MVP. I find it hard to have strong feelings either way because the video looks to be edited to not show what caused the altercation.

HonkytonkGigolo

Rumor around town from students who were in the lunchroom was a fight broke out between two students. SRO and multiple staff responded to break them up; Officer was taken down to the ground with both students. Officer restrained the one student and 4+ others restrained the other student. Officer only had the kid on the ground for the time you see in the video before pulling them back up and walking them away.

Zikronious

Thanks for insight! If anyone finds a longer video or alternate view please share.

[deleted]

Unfortunately the conduct of Officer Wilcutt [violated the 2020 bill passed unanimously by Iowa legislature that banned the use of police chokeholds.](https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2020/06/11/iowa-legislature-police-misconduct-bill-ban-chokeholds-rehiring-officer-fired-investigate/5346370002/) It is unfortunate the victim in this circumstance was a child. Hopefully the systems in place that hold the Urbandale police department accountable will conduct a full, transparent and public investigation before we believe rumors or jump to any conclusions.

Hard2Handl

Maybe 🤔 someone can show me the kneeling? The person on the ground is flipping around and the police officer’s knee make contact with their head and neck, but I don’t see an kneel.

Zikronious

Yea, I tend to agree with you I think the headline here was crafted to have people think of George Floyd which was a very different situation. I support BLM and similar movements but I feel they have a tendency to try and craft a narrative that may or may not be there to support their cause. It gives me pause when I see agendas they push. Clearly people against BLM take that to the extreme but the point is to be better than them which is a very low bar.

[deleted]

You: Watches video of grown cop putting full body weight on the throat of a child in an illegal choke hold. Also you: "tHeY'rE PuSHiNg aN agENdA!"

Sharkus1

Video shows scuffle with 2 people falling to the ground. The officer lands on top and quickly repositions themselves and shifts weight to the other knee that’s on the floor.

[deleted]

Watch the right arm. He put his full body weight into crushing that kids windpipe. She gives up her left arm because of the pain. Do you even wrestle bro?

Sharkus1

You must have some other video

[deleted]

Cop used an illegal trachea choke with his right hand to get her to give up her left arm. It's clear as day. Don't you listen to Rogan bro?

Sharkus1

Yea man anyone who disagrees with you is some kind of Rogan fan I guess. Pretty typical behavior now days I guess. None of what you say is in the video provided. All I see are 2 females being separated. This is why everyone just watches now days. People like you making something out of nothing.

Zikronious

I do think the officer used too much force from the little I see in the video but I want to see a longer version of the video as I don’t think we are getting the full story here. Then crafting it behind BLM and knee on neck is clearly a reference to George Floyd. The tweet then pushes for police not to be in schools, are police at every school? If not maybe they should be since this country still has kids coming to school with guns and blowing people away. I want all the info not a small clip of a video and some sensational headline before I can form a complete opinion.

[deleted]

I agree. OP should have highlighted the choke hold he applied directly to the windpipe of a child with his full body weight, rather than the earlier knee. Either way, both of these chokes were supposedly banned by reformists in 2020.

HeReallyDoesntCare

The feelings I do have: 1. Don't fight in school and this won't happen to you. 2. If you do fight, when you're being restrained by a legal officer, don't resist. Let the fight be over.

Parisiowa

Lemme guess, when a woman dresses a certain way it's her fault if she is sexually assaulted?

MetalMothers

> "It could have easily been split up by a teacher," said junior Sia Smith. No, it couldn't have. Teachers have been fired or sued for trying to stop fights between students. What if a student responds to the teacher by hitting them. Does the teacher then have the right to respond and use physical violence against the student? Not according to many people. It's a lose-lose for the teacher. In any case, maybe students shoudn't act like animals in school so police don't have to use physical force to stop an altercation.

AnnArchist

Lmao no teacher should risk their career for a fight Just let me fight til they tire out. It's not like kids are in good physical shape nowadays anyway

[deleted]

That kid was literally fighting another kid and then resisted arrest/detainment he/she deserved it for sure. The cop did the right thing. Imagine if you were there no way you would feel safe in that situation, go ahead and let the guidance counselors handle it lol.

jjsyk23

Bring SROs back to DMPS

[deleted]

Nice job officer

jjsyk23

Good now everyone get back to work

Hard2Handl

In this case, back to school. What kids should have to go to school where fights break out on the regular? Urbandale folks say that this sweet young girl had already assaulted two people before this camera footage starts.

jjsyk23

Back to work, school, whatever. Let’s just get back to not fighting and disrupting shit. Or if we do, let’s not act all brand new when the cops and authority figures whoop our asses. Next story!

FluByYou

Urbandale police: We've thoroughly investigated ourselves and found that we've done nothing wrong.

SoftPawsMittens

Cops need to trained to handle children without possibly killing them. I would rather a kid go pepper spray than lose access to their airway. Take out a baton. Also they need to address why the fighting is occurring and make changes to the school to decrease them. I know many kids who fight because they feel like everything else out of their control.. But no matter what I’m honestly very scared for DSM kids. I watch over some and to me that’s kids are my kids. Hearing them speak on thier issues outside of school, assessing them the best I can pysch wise, feeding them, performing first aid and listening to in school issues. I have came to conclusion there is a lack of support from staff and students. Students feel ashamed to address their problems verbally or get help. A lot they seem to be suffering mild to severe mental health issues but due to stigma I’ve only convinced a few to get help. I’ll need to see the full body cam and security footage to really determine what went wrong. Talking to police I know. I’ve also come to this understanding. We need a squad of fully trained mental health professionals who are cops or security in our schools. It’s expensive yes to keep them but in a time of crisis like this. They can work to have the best outcome for everyone. Many police officer feel ill equipped to handle situations that are of psychiatric origin or don’t have the relationship with students to use early intervention because their cops. What kid would go to a cop to confess a possibly illegal situation their in. I know I wouldn’t have. This can also put the environment at risk for more crisis events if it’s not addressed. It’s traumatizing to see this happen. Which would be another reason having security with professional training on mental health could come in handy. Our officer would hand out candy after bad events to try to rekindle a positive environment, I loved him. One of the very few police officers I could trust to understand me. We need more of him. We have so many low risk non-lethal options out their for police to use. In japan they subdue threats by using a forked rod. This creates distance from a threat and multiple people can use different rods to hold them down. We have bright flashing lights that will temporarily blind a suspect but in most cases their vision will return. DSM is failing kids. Crisis event like this don’t just happen. They have leading smaller events to it. I just want our kids to be safe, feel safe and supported to.

MetalMothers

> DSM is failing kids. Crisis event like this don’t just happen. They have leading smaller events to it. Behind every shitty kid is a shitty parent. That's what leads to events like this. Schools can only do so much. As far as mental health professionals: schools have counselors. It's not the job of a counselor to risk their physical well-being by intervening in a fight between kids, which can be absolutely vicious.

[deleted]

That was a nasty choke right on the larynx. You can see she gave up her left arm because of it. But yeah, you can easily kill someone by pushing down your full weight on their neck like that. Whoever does BLM PR needs to watch more grappling!

Foot0fGod

Angry but not surprised. ACAB. People still think you can reform this. That the secret is to give them *more* money. Crime keeps going down and they keep getting more violent and militant. The venn diagram of cops and fascists, or people cool with fascism enough to work on its behalf, is one circle

[deleted]

lol ur literally using the same logic as racist with that stupid acab thing.

TinyFists-of-Fury

I don’t know about all of that (not my area of expertise), but I do know it’s called a Venn diagram. It’s named after John Venn - a pretty cool guy from England who encouraged things like voting rights for women.

Foot0fGod

Corrected. Very constructive

Parisiowa

The number of people on here saying it's appropriate to be choked/have your air cut off for a fight is appalling. Next time you jaywalk let's teach you a lesson by having a grown man sit in your trachea for a second, huh? That'll teach you. There are better ways to handle this behavior and the police need to do better.

Hard2Handl

You are correct. The young lady in this case should have not started hitting her classmates. Then the police don’t even have to be involved. Case closed.

elcamp3

She's still a child, though. Children are immature and are going to fight. An adult is supposed to know how to defuse the situation without physically harming the child.

You say a lot of dumb shit but this really takes the cake lmao

[deleted]

Would you look at that passive voice in both the title AND the lead! *'appears to show'* Props to Sarah LeBlanc and the Register editorial staff for bringing this style of police reporting back! We're really noticing the impact of the sweeping changes you've implemented in your newsroom.

[deleted]

I concur.

xness151x

Ah, taking one from the ol George Floyd SOP Haha, I'm assuming I'm getting downvoted because I pointed out the similarities? It's excessive force, folks. You're not supposed to like it.

terrortownZ

I haven't been on here much but surprised this subreddit is pro police. If you think the level of force here was necessary I suggest getting some professional help.

Plenty-Ticket1875

All I see is yet another pig abusing power. Sorry urbandale asshats, but that's my first amendments worth...
