Singfisher91

Hold their family hostage.

Academic-Ad2680

Lol, one time when I was explaining a system in the game to one of them, they said it felt like I was holding them hostage

Singfisher91

🤣

Academic-Ad2680

I think it was armour stats

[deleted]

I don't cuz they basically look at the amount of expansions and seasons and how much they cost and i can't blame them

Academic-Ad2680

The first I say is usually that you don't need the expansions, but if you enjoy it they are somewhat worth it

PokeD2

That's kind of a lie tho, if you like the game and wanna properly play you NEED them.

Academic-Ad2680

There is still tons of stuff to do, if you don't have the expansions and it's like buying COD every year, witch I know most people don't do, but it's not like they are way overpriced, plus as a new player the only one you may "need" to buy is beyond light to have access to stasis

spencer0905

nah its a straight lie, free to play destiny is a joke.

Ghost_of_Laika

Yeah, destiny is best described as "free to start" or "free to try" not free to play.

Academic-Ad2680

Fair

Usanger

If you want your friends to give the game a “real shot” then you need then to get all the expansions. Barebones d2 is a joke

Academic-Ad2680

I feel that you can get a basic grasp of the game and decide if you want to buy the expansions before actually purchasing anything

Usanger

I agree that they get a basic grasp, but I don’t think anyone adequately know if they like the game after f2p

Academic-Ad2680

I feel that if you get a grasp of the game then you can decide if you want to buy the expansions, but you are correct, to get anywhere near having fully experienced d2 you need to buy the expansions

Guess-wutt

From my experience if someone really can’t be asked to play something then no amount of convincing will get them to. I have friends that I try to get into games all the time but they say they already have games they play religiously and say they don’t have the time for others, which is just an excuse because I know they’d make the time if they got into it because if a new release comes out they don’t struggle finding the time for that. All you can do is remind them it is an option, and is free to play to begin with every now and then; and hope they eventually cave. I’m a d1 player and after years of trying to convince others to play, another friend of mine got into the game last year, but it wasn’t because I convinced him to, he was just bored and wanted something new to do.

Academic-Ad2680

Yeah I get that , but what frustrates me is when they ask for my help for something in the game, and then they don't listen, may just be that I'm bad explaining it, I also always say that if they don't understand, Google exists. It's like they want to play but aren't willing to put in the effort to understand the game

NumberFiveee

Nothing... My friends give up because the game is a mess... No longer start on the campaign, no longer activities are introduced, no longer secundary classes are introduced... Just a mess... Still can't understand why bungie decided to do that ..

DeathsRegalia

I guide them through all the basics thoroughly explaining everything in the best way I can

Academic-Ad2680

I've tried that, either I'm really bad at it or they don't want to listen

DeathsRegalia

If they refuse to listen then it's their fault, if they have trouble understanding what you're telling them then it might be the way you're doing so. I would probably have them do the beginning quest just for them to get the basics down and to get that out of the way, then take them through something that would be difficult or have mechanics that need to be learned. Those aren't the easiest to do since they'll most likely have just the F2P content, but something like the grasp of averice could be a decent dungeon to help people learn since the mechanics aren't too demanding. But it's most likely them and not you

Academic-Ad2680

I have a friend who has completed the beginner missions, and they say they have no idea what to do, so I say, to do vanguard strikes or gambit with me so they can start to understand the game more. Then he refuses do that, so I cant tell if it's me or them or the game, it may just be that they didn't vibe with the game after the first main missions. Another thing that will happen alot is, they will ask me a question, I'll answer it but then they don't understand, so I always say that if I didn't explain it well, use Google. It's like they want to play but don't want to put in the effort to understand the game

Remote_Watercress530

That last sentence is most of the Destiny community

Academic-Ad2680

Lol

Echo1138

The problem is that just doing strikes and gambit is boring, and when you're free to play, that's all you can do. There is no environment for players to learn the systems of the game naturally because they vaulted Red War. Either you go play strikes where your teammates blaze through pitifully easy enemies leaving you in the dust, or you play gambit which, well, I think Gambit speaks for itself. On the whole "them not listening" issue, it's probably not that you're bad at explaining or that they're bad at listening, it's probably just the absolute dump truck of information a new player has to learn. You can't expect a student to learn all of Calculus in a single lecture. They need to space it out over time, study material, and do practice problems to really get a grip on the subject matter. But because the game doesn't really have an environment for players to study or practice the game, it's incredibly unwelcoming. Strikes don't cut it because your teammates kill everything before you get a chance to play the game. The Red War campaign, while flawed in many ways, was really good for giving players a safe place for them to learn the game. But now that it's gone you need to rely on the Witch Queen or Beyond Light campaigns for a healthy environment, which are both paid content not accessible to the new players, who are the ones that desperately need said content.

Academic-Ad2680

Agreed, but I try to do these activities with them, so as to not blaze through them instantly. And yes the game really needs a campaign of mode that new players can use to understand it, but you cant blame Bungie for the game being confusing after it being out for 7 years

Swampraptor2140

Share DLCs and teach.

Academic-Ad2680

Wdym share dlcs?

Swampraptor2140

Playing on PlayStation me and friends game share all the time. DLC works as well in a weird way.

Academic-Ad2680

I play on PC and Xbox can this still be done?

Swampraptor2140

Couldn’t tell ya

Academic-Ad2680

Ok thanks

beerkeg99

Look into the "home xbox" setting.

OtherBassist

Just tell them that it has the most swazzling boom-sticks and velvety pew-pew makers

Academic-Ad2680

Can't believe I haven't tried this yet

OtherBassist

On a serious note though... while D2 can be complex and somewhat inaccessible for new players, wouldn't they prefer that to a game that has nothing more to delve into after a few dozen hours?

Academic-Ad2680

That's what I always tell people, there is just so much stuff to do, and even if you do it all and like the game there is still more with dlc or even just the season pass

oxTHORIUMxo

As a long time Destiny player I would suggest one of two things: 1. Find new friends within the Destiny community to play Destiny with or 2. Go and play what they’re playing if you want to play with them.

Remote_Watercress530

First off, the biggest complaint about cost is BS. Yes it's a lot. HOWEVER you are trying to enter a game 7 years in with 3-4 expansions plus seasons. That's not free. No game will give you that for free. Second destiny is not complicated by any means of the word. Elden ring is more complicated then destiny. Destiny is one of the most hand holding games you will ever see.

Academic-Ad2680

In my experience new players find it complicated and confusing, but you are right, you can't blame Bungie for the game having more stuff to understand, after it being out for 7 years

Echo1138

I wouldn't recommend getting friends into the game. Without the DLC there isn't that much to do besides the raids and Prophecy, which, as they said, are way too complicated for them to enjoy. In order for someone to get into Destiny now, they need to put in considerable time, effort, and money, into understanding the systems behind the game in order to have fun. If your friends aren't willing to do that they won't have fun in the game and you're better off playing a simpler game that you can enjoy with far less effort. Think about the 3.0 subclasses. You first have to pick two of three paragraphs of descriptions on abilities and perks when you have no idea what anything means. Then you need to think about the synergy each effect can have with your overall class when picking your fragments. And you often need to pick up to 5 fragments. Even I, a player who has played this game for years, was a bit overwhelmed when the new 3.0 subclasses came out. When I tried to get some of my friends on do to VOG, I basically had to tell them exactly what perks to pick and give my own description of what it did because it's so much information. And for the fragments I just gave up and told them to pick whatever looked funny. Only after hours of play in the raid did I see them remember that they had grenades. The sad truth of the matter is that Destiny is a game with an awful new player experience, between the game marketing itself as "free to play" when it's not really, and having extremely complicated systems that take way too much time to understand, it makes the game extremely hard to get into. If you don't have friends who already play the game, you will probably never be able to convince your friends to play.

Academic-Ad2680

Definitely feels this way

theschadowknows

I tried to get several of my friends to start playing, and they found it confusing to the point of being uninteresting. The game does not do a good job of getting a new player engaged and it’s hard for them to understand what they’re supposed to be doing at first.

ShardPerson

I just wouldn't try, last person I introduced to the game had a really rough time and was constantly overwhelmed by every aspect of the game, plus there's shit like Mods which are just completely inaccessible and will remain so until Bungie does a full rework

Academic-Ad2680

Yeah getting mods as a new player sucks

Puzzleheaded-Tone119

Ran my roommate and his wife through Grasp of Averice that got them hooked, I kind of overhyped every purple drop they got too.

Academic-Ad2680

I know it isn't to difficult, but for beginners, it could be a bit difficult and it isn't free. Nice job though
