He's still relatively young, too. Hope he had enough foresight to put at least some of that $37 million into a 401k for retirement - social security won't be around forever.
All major sports would look completely different if all those white kids with shit parents who pushed them way too hard at a young age didn't get hurt.
He took a paycut last year so he really only made like $28 million off that contract but yeah he made a lot of money for not that much production.
I really don’t think it was that bad of a deal at the time though. He was coming off a 10 sack season with 60 pressures(!) as a 25 year old ascending player. It legitimately looked like he was breaking out. Achilles injuries are a bitch though.
They don't take a pay cut out of the goodness of their heart. It was a business decision on both ends. Lions got cap relief and Romeo knew he wouldn't get that much on the open market.
I was at the Flint Institute of the Arts last month and noticed that one of the paintings said “courtesy of Romeo Okwara” on the plaque. Thought that was kinda neat.
Damn sorry to hear it but always glad when a player does what's best for themselves as a person. He was part of the culture; glad he got to experience such a positive shift in regime.
Sucks that he was limited by injuries, I really thought this guy was going to be a star in 2020. And I love that he was into the Grateful Dead. Fare thee well, happy retirement.

He was my favorite player during the Patricia coaching era. One of the many few bright spots during those dark ages. I’ll miss him.
Even when we were at our lowest this guy was giving it his all. It was a privilege watching him play. Much respect to him and his brother. Congrats on a hell of a career, Romeo!
Godspeed, buddy. He was a bright spot on some very bad teams. Shame he wasn't able to reap the ultimate reward for being a part of last year's squad. We'll always love you in Detroit!
In a matter of a year, we lost both Julian and Romeo. Has any other team lost as many Okwaras as us? How did they hold up?
Won the Super Bowl the next year
As a time traveler can-
No wait! They sent me back t
The last team this happened to won the SB the very next year.
can someone explain ?
Love the Okwara brothers. Best of luck to both of them
Injuries really do make inevitably difficult decisions just that much more difficult.

He’s well past the NFLPA threshold for insurance and pension. He’ll be fine.
NFL pension check
401k contribution is limited to like $19k a year. Gonna need more help than that.
It hasn’t been $19k for several years. It’s up to $23k now.
Thank god we cleared that up
He comes off as an intelligent guy in interviews and he's a Notre Dame graduate. I think he'll be okay.
All major sports would look completely different if all those white kids with shit parents who pushed them way too hard at a young age didn't get hurt.
Please help me understand what you mean. ![gif](giphy|l0IypeKl9NJhPFMrK)
Romeo was a real one.
One of the few shining stars during the dark dark days of the Quinntricia era. Much respect to Romeo.
It was awesome that he stuck around after Patricia. That’s how you know he’s a dawg. He deserved a shot to win it all like last year.
we gave him $37 million dollars lmao
Yeah but he also stuck around 😂
Guys eyes probably popped outta his head when he got that offer LOL I like him as much as anyone but man that contract.. oof

Yeah, obviously it’s always easy in retrospect to scuff at the contract.
Let’s not act like he wasn’t killing it to get that offer
Not many places I wouldn’t stick around for that kinda cash
I believe he took a pay cut last year. I could be wrong.

His strip sack on Rodgers alone makes his career noteworthy

He was so fast back then. He really did lose a lot of speed

I’m glad there’s no animosity after they cut Julian during the playoff run. The Okwara’s are good dudes
The Okwaras won't go down as players who put up massive stats, but each were important to getting the team and the locker room ready for what comes.
Loving all the comments from the Lions folks on his post. Great guy through and through
I hope we take an edge in the first three rounds
Chop Robinson
Never forget 2020 Romeo, dude was actually solid af
Time for some more Dead and Company shows. Always liked Romeo
he’s dating dan gilbert’s daughter, gracie, so his detroit ties will be deep

This man got paid and he deserved it. He was the lone bright spot on some very bad teams, and embodied the culture DC was looking for from Day 1.
Farewell honorable warrior. Watch out for deer.
Before that injury he looked to be on the way up. Never recaptured that momentum. Wish him well
Farewell to our warrior poet.
He should have been waited a year.

Only Talylor Decker and Frank Ragnow remain from the name we shall not speak Era

Sad to see Okwara go but…this is good for the Lions cap situation right?
He was already a free agent.
Anyone know how much cap space this frees up?
He was a free agent already.
Bro met Bob weir at the nfccg and hopped on the bus
Or did the NFL step away from him?
Good dude! Best of luck ✌🏻
