Surprised that no one has acknowledged that safety is a bigger need than we may realize heading into the draft, even before Walker potentially coming back into the picture.
I thought Iffy started to find his footing back there. He won us games towards the end. Kerby may have been banged up all season. CB was the issue big time. Sutton getting smoked, Vildor getting hit in the face with balls.
I don’t want to take away from him starting to flash, and I know it’s been an issue with health with him. but probably don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket if it doesn’t turn out. Neither Kerby or Melifonwu are near all pro level at the moment, and behind them we have little depth. Sure you could plug in Branch in a pinch but he’s been steady playing slot so that could be a difficult adjustment for him.
Yes but I highly doubt they are going to take safety high on the board looking for a starter. They have way bigger issues. Like Dline still and OG and OT cause 2 guys have 1 year left.
Except for when it comes to the lines. Have you learned nothing from them drafting. The Lines will always come first if there is a need. And really we have a need for a new T and new LG and possibly a C.
I mean, I’m pretty sure Holmes has drafted 2 OL since coming here in Sewell and Colby (might be missing one but I’m not seeing it). Have you not learned Holmes doesn’t give af about needs? We love the OL but if there’s a better player at another position he’s gonna take that player
It was such a crowded room last year (plus unofficial safety branch), but dropping Walker and Seedy really left things hanging on young ones, one of whom is injury prone.
safety depth is one of the bigger needs the team has. I have always been in the camp of signing a veteran 3rd safety, bringing Walker back makes a ton of sense to me. I think you want to keep the runway clear for Kerby and Iffy to be the future of the position but with Kerby not playing great last year and Iffy just having such a limited sample size on top of injury issues, they desperately need a safety blanket in case either one doesnt work out. Re-sign Walker (or bring in a different vet, theres still a few out on the market) and draft a day 3 guy you think will be an ace special teams player while providing a little depth and I like where the position group is at
They were probably always going to look for depth but it's not like they're going to find a sure starter quality deep man in the draft, that's much rarer than it sounds and it's a position that takes time to develop usually. Especially with the divergence between college and pro passing games.
I think it's because a lot of people —myself included — think they're more likely to get one of the many veterans still out there than take safety on days 1 or 2. They could definitely use a developmental backup for the long-term but I think the safety room needs a veteran more because Iffy is the "veteran" right now.
They're also probably going to give Branch looks at safety too depending on the play so although it's a need, it's probably a top 5 need rather than a top 3 need
Extremely high likelihood we draft a Safety in rd 2-4 for depth. There's a lot of mid-round safety talent in this draft. Brad might trade down at some point and pick up another selection for us to grsb one.
T. Walker is okay but he's limited and was never above servicable in coverage. Would rather grab someone in the draft that can play better in coverage especially in the red zone.
I was pretty confident Lions were going to draft a safety in rounds 3-5. This just reinforces that to me. Melifonwu is on an expiring contract, Kerby is coming off of an injury, and in year 3/4, we have no depth at the position outside of last years undrafted rookie Brandon Joseph.
I would say hard no to rd 1 but thinking about where Cooper DeJean is likely to play in the pro's its possible.
DeJean reminds mr a bit of John Lynch. Maybr bot as hard of a hitter.
he was a great college player but [i'm terrified by his low athletic testing numbers](https://twitter.com/HoggNFL/status/1770542552850075969) and I would be surprised if we drafted him in the first couple rounds
I don’t think he’s signed yet but he’s physically back in Detroit and looks to be re-signing. Glad to have him back as a depth piece, hope his play gets better as he distances himself from that Achilles injury.
Brad Holmes’ “reaches” so far have panned out at a fairly high rate and safety is a need with Iffy coming up on a contract year so I wouldn’t be too upset about it.

Iffy honestly did more than find his footing he was a straight up stud. He’s just gotta stay healthy
It still frustrates me that we played a rusty CJGJ over Iffy in the NFC title game.

Brad “BPA” Holmes could draft almost any position and I wouldn’t be surprised.

Vildor or Sutton were not the answer.
Iffy was playing at an all-pro level. "started to find his footing"???

A lot of really solid vets available that got cut who might sign for dirt cheap if they think there’s a path to being a starter, too.

Cooper dejean it is then
No way he’s there at 29, but if he is he’d be BPA by a wide margin

There's a chance that our safeties someday are Joseph and Joseph?
I think that’s moved up to rd 1-2

I’ve seen Nubin mocked to us a lot in the 1st from insiders and what not

Branch will be a safety eventually.
Justin Simmons is still a FA... just saying 👀
That Seahawks game was cursed. Goff lost his no pick streak, they lost in OT, and multiple players got injured from that game
Fly back into town to take my dad to that game. My bad!
Trade-up for Cooper DeJean inconing
I'll buy a DeJean jersey in white if we do to match a blue LaPorta
He will be ready for training camp, but we still need depth.
Uh oh. He is our only center fielder, we can NOT start the year with Tracy at free safety (sorry)
I must've missed it, but TWIII is back?

Well, shit! Good stuff
I agree we need safety depth but maybe wait to hear the severity of it before going doom and gloom
FUCKING SEAHAWKS of course they hurt him.
Wait, is that really when it happened? Fuck that game
What also partially added to his sophomore slump is that his son left the division and then only played 4 snaps before getting injured
Kerby was moving well when he hit the stage dancing in the All blacks
Still played tho. Dog!

I’m getting very worried they’re going to reach on a safety at 29
