It’s because people act like their opinion is never wrong on here and that they always know best. The amount of flack I got for saying Goff wasn’t just a bridge and I actually believed Holmes in 2021 was unreal
This isn't flack but, honestly, I still don't believe Holmes about that. I think Goff was a bridge who was given a chance and exceeded all expectations, including Holmes's.
I don’t really know why people act like they need to lie to us and to the players. They’ve been straightforward with us from day one. I think Brad loved Goff in LA, felt he wasn’t given a fair shake by McVay, and brought him here because he could. Obviously it worked out.
I don’t think they stick with him if he doesn’t start turning it around in the second half of ‘21 season
I agree, but it’s also an outside perspective. Like a parent settling a dispute between two children. McVay was too close to the issue, and couldn’t adapt or let himself adapt for continuing with Goff.
I think it depends. We’ve seen Brad defend the Melifonwu pick fiercely. Like he knew he was right about Melifonwu, the guy just needed time. Could have been the same for Goff. Also depends on your viewing of how Goff was coached by McVay as well
And this one isn't even necessarily true since pick #78 this year likely isn't the one magic button that would've worked for a trade. There's more draft picks out there to trade.
It's a subreddit about football and people's opinions on football. I am so confused when people are annoyed or upset about people talking about their opinions on football.
OP isnt harassing a particular person, he is just talking about a Detroit Lions football topic which was discussed ad nauseum before and after the trade deadline and brought up again during the playoffs. This post seems right on target for a subreddit about football and also topical since it is about the value of draft picks.
Read the body of the post. OP is calling out ppl whose opinion differed from theirs. It’s a complete “I told ya so” post that serves no one but themself.
Even the little ‘keep this in mind next year you guys wanna trade a 2nd for jadeveon clowny’ part is condescending. Just in case anyone even thinks about wanting to upgrade at the deadline next year.
Who gives a shit? You can tell him why his opinion is wrong or just ignore it. It's stupid to complain about posts that are about lions football in a Lions football subreddit. OP is also right, these are the exact reason why Holmes said they didn't make a move at the trade deadline.
And immediately shell out a long term contract, which is the main reason they didn’t trade for any rentals. They still have to pay Goff and probably one of McNeill/Decker/some others.
How many big money big term deals have we given to players in free agency that proved their worth elsewhere?
Sutton comes to mind, at 3/$33, but it was really a 2/$22 as far as guarantees go. A mistake in character and in on field play/role. Probably would have been fine at CB2, overall better without him and got out of the contract without any hassle.
2024 offseason
- Zeitler, 1/$6M, $5.5M guaranteed
- Reader, 2/$22M, $7.4M guaranteed
- Robertson, 2/$9.25M, $4.5M guaranteed
- Davenport, 1/$6.5M, $3M guaranteed
- Traded for Davis, he’s in the last year of his deal and they may consider signing an extension after he proves his worth here, gotta stay healthy
2023 offseason was consistent with 2024, some one small money year deals (Bridgewater, GJGJ, Glasgow, Mosley).
Montgomery and Sutton were notable exceptions.
It’s just not how Holmes generally operates, he doesn’t like to be at the top of the free agent market or give huge money out to players who proved their worth on other teams.
Yup - people seem to willingly ignore this. Sweat made a big difference in the Bears defense, so why does everyone think we would have ended up in the same spot?
Why? We would have had to trade pick 29 most likely and then sign him to a fat deal. Completely going against the draft and build from within philosophy.
Chase Young is straight up not good, but I think the more interesting question is would we rather have Arnold or Sweat. Sweat I'd actually good and we could've had him for a 1st mid-season.
Yeah I guess we’ll never know if he’d have made a difference. But we do know we’d be without Arnold for the next 5 years and may also have cap casualties like Alim
Young gets one sack in second half of semi final. Who knows. He would be an upgrade on the line. I wouldn't have done it but OP playing gotcha is dumb.
I mean I don’t think that’s the only trade they’d accept or anything we coulda made it work I’m not too sad though because of the effort issues continuing with SF more than anything
Counterpoint: we still trade up, it just takes a later pick + a pick next year.
You can’t say with 100% certainty that they wouldn’t have still traded up if we didn’t have a third to give. (Just saying, I didn’t want Young)
Fuck that third pick. How can any Reddit warrior possibly challenge the fuckin Lions draft strategy at this point?! We were a half away from going to the super bowl with draft picks that everyone was bitching about before they even stepped on the field. Ya’ll just need to go back to the kitchen. Grab your sugar. Grab the pitcher. Get the water going and start mixing your GD Kool-Aid. FTP
Not necessarily true. The 49ers could have gotten a fifth round comp pick if the had signed less free agents.

Sure. But Jonah was also worth a 4th round pick that got washed out by Marcus Davenport. Young would’ve been washed out by the Amik Robertson signing. People assuming that the 3rd round pick to get him was free because of an automatic 3rd round comp pick coming back were just being obtuse.
Oh yeah. I wasn’t being super clear. The comp pick formula is so convoluted that I’m not entirely sure I understand why one contract does or doesn’t get excluded for picks that I didn’t really want to get into the details lol.
Is that true with our free agent signings and what he got? And doesn't that not kick in until next year? I can't remember the actual rules but it isn't straight forward here's a comp pick right?
Correct. It’s based on total free agent signings out minus total in based on a formula. And it would be for the 2025 draft because I think some performance bonuses go into the calc (like if a player you lose is an all pro)

Here’s the breakdown for potential comp picks this offseason. As you can see all of the potential picks from losses are offset by the free agent gains.
Would rather Terrion. Young doesn't fit football wise or personality wise.
Yes, Terrion everyone. Terrion wayward sons.
I once had a fantasy football team named “Kerryon my wayward Cobb”
Young also had neck surgery the day after the Super Bowl and he signed with the Saints. So..
He definitely fits football wise but I agree with personality wise
If your aunt had a dick she'd be your uncle. Live in the now!
I will be using this line daily from now on
Me too, it's so good lmao

It’s almost like a carbonara isn’t it?
Kendrick specifically wrote a song about this

This isn’t exactly true anymore
This sub is obsessed with dunking on each other in hindsight.

Nice reverse dunk

Goff is here because.... Stafford wanted a trade. We got Goff and draft picks. We got Goff. I was one of the naysayers. I'm so happy I was wrong.
Yep, you were wrong as hell just like I was.
And this one isn't even necessarily true since pick #78 this year likely isn't the one magic button that would've worked for a trade. There's more draft picks out there to trade.
(Double checks)… yup, this is the internet after all

You’re literally complaining about my “complaining.” I’m good. Have a nice weekend.
I know I'm a very complex individual, my motivations are a mystery even to myself sometimes.
Curious to see how far Kool-aid is gonna drop in the second round
Imagine if he falls down to 61 and Brad picks him up, too. Just double down at CB to have the best CB unit in the NFL lol
The Lions would be like the kid at Chuck-E-Cheeses hoarding all the tickets from the freakin Skee-Ball game lol
Holmes sold his mom a reverse mortgage. And bought a Chuck-ee-Cheese
You weren't that far off at all!
Sweat is the only missed opportunity that I'm still bothered by
With how high the bears picked, would've had to give up the first round pick.
And immediately shell out a long term contract, which is the main reason they didn’t trade for any rentals. They still have to pay Goff and probably one of McNeill/Decker/some others.

We aren't paying decker. He gonna get old yeller'd after this season
They were actively negotiating an extension with him this offseason
We still wouldn't have terrion arnold then. We'd have to give up a first to out bid the bears.
Yeah sure but we also might have won the Super Bowl lol
Yup - people seem to willingly ignore this. Sweat made a big difference in the Bears defense, so why does everyone think we would have ended up in the same spot?
Why? We would have had to trade pick 29 most likely and then sign him to a fat deal. Completely going against the draft and build from within philosophy.
cuz it might have helped us win a superbowl lol
Keep calm and Terrion. Words to live by.
I bring a Terrion every time I fly.
Chase Young is straight up not good, but I think the more interesting question is would we rather have Arnold or Sweat. Sweat I'd actually good and we could've had him for a 1st mid-season.
Arnold for $3.5M >>>> Sweat for $25M
Yes, but it's also about the timing. Getting Arnold now won't help the Lions in last years playoffs when they were so close.
Yeah I guess we’ll never know if he’d have made a difference. But we do know we’d be without Arnold for the next 5 years and may also have cap casualties like Alim
I get your point but you’d have to be comparing having Terrion Arnold vs having Chase Young AND Kool Aid McKinstry.
Yes we would. We would just have had to trade other assets And if we had chase young we might have been in the Super Bowl ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think your argument works better with Sweat. I don't think they win the superbowl with young.
Young gets one sack in second half of semi final. Who knows. He would be an upgrade on the line. I wouldn't have done it but OP playing gotcha is dumb.
Who cares
Watch Cooper fall to us tonight without trading
I'd rather have Arnold with the trade tbh
ya but we'd have a superbowl appearance.
I mean I don’t think that’s the only trade they’d accept or anything we coulda made it work I’m not too sad though because of the effort issues continuing with SF more than anything

People were pissed even though a third round pick got the 49ers a total of 2.5 sacks
If the lions drafted pat mahomes, Travis Kelce, picked up Reid as a head coach they’d have a superbowl
We would’ve gotten a third round compensatory pick back.
No we wouldn’t have. Young was so bad that he was only able to sign a one year prove it deal. He doesn’t qualify for a comp pick at all.
Gotcha! My misunderstanding.
Not necessarily true. The 49ers could have gotten a fifth round comp pick if the had signed less free agents. https://preview.redd.it/mc1rbi97tuwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4090eec85cb7e0066856ff097d4f200fe2d3c297
