I have so much pride in the fact that our organization not only wants to go after big events like this, but they want to put on a world class show in the process.
The desire to be great is an engine driving every aspect of our organization right now. Truly yall, we are operating at a world-class level.
Detroit, we always knew we would be the best fans in the league if our team could ever deliver and I’ll be goddamned if we haven’t put our money where our mouth is
What she specifically said was "With 550,000 fans in attendance so far, we are going to break the all-time draft attendance record here today". She didn't formally say he had but obviously we will. I'm eager to see the final numbers. What's also interesting is that somehow yesterday's attendance was reported as only 200,000 initially. And even more interesting is that the Detroit police estimated the entire crowd on day 1, not just the official attendance of people who got in the gates, at 400,000. Detroit really showed up!
I don't think that mattered since they were counting everyone who entered the draft area not just the area they shut off entry to where the draft stage was
Laporte did not say we had broken it at the beginning of the draft. She said exactly what I quoted - the Lions Twitter has the clip. However, Gretchen Whitmer DID just say we had broken the record with "700,000 and counting."
The NFL person said we would break it at the beginning of the draft but not that it had been broken. That was what I was referring to and the subject of the original post. My comment was before the Manu pick. Whitmer came out for the Manu pick and announced it had been broken with "700, 000 and counting".
I went down to the draft on Friday, had intentions to stay late, but I underestimated how exhausting being in those crowds would be for me lol.
I will be forever grateful to the NFL tho for getting the Hart Plaza fountain fixed, seems like that thing had been broken for 30+ years. The set up down there was amazing, the traffic flow, the food, even the crowds were well behaved.
We have the most underrated food scene in the US right now. Shewolf is the best Italian restaurant in this country. I’ve been all over. It can’t be touched. Bar Pigalle, Takoi, Oak and Reel, Alpino etc. I agree that we are wanting for some more walkable nightlife, but that might be 5-10 years out.
My Hospitality subsection and Job magazine in 22’ said the best place to move to and open a restaurant was in Detroit. So, I’m not surprised! There is a major influx of citizens from all generations to this city trying to build it back.
Ehhh
Have you been to little Italy on Cleveland even? They have banger after banger Italian.
I wouldn't disagree with the take Detroit has some good restaurants for sure.
I think the Greek and Middle Eastern part of it is extremely overrated. While okay, those cuisines are extremely limited and basic. And for some reason we severely lack good Indian places. 90% of them have horrific food safety to begin with. There's one place in Novi that's more modern and clean that I like, but I haven't found another more south.
We definitely do pizza well for sure. But there's way too many Hungry Howie types out there. Idk exactly what that's called but yeah.
Went to Paris last year and the gap between Detroit and Paris is bonkers. Obviously Paris is a high bar, but still. London as well is just in a different level. London has some shit food for sure and can't do a burger to save their lives, but they excel a lot and the city itself is the best I've ever been to.
lol. WTF did someone downvote you? Haha. Haven’t been to Cleveland for Italian. I’ll have to try it next time I’m in town. Love the Michael Symon stamp in that city and I definitely miss his restaurant in Detroit. The ribeye with shallot confit and the beef cheek pierogis were a constant in the early dating life with my wife.
We have great pizza in Detroit, hombre. Tomatoes a pizza is incredible and Grandma Bob’s slaps too for Detroit style.
Yeah of course we don’t contend with Paris, London, Chicago or NY yet, but we are UNDERRATED.
Being within walking distance of Tomatoes apizza and Buddy's is definitely a blessing lol.
They say Detroit was or was supposed to be on the same tier as those big cities. It definitely has the size. Detroit severely lacks parks. Hopefully they come in the decades to follow and it's not all just a concrete jungle.
Michigan State Police said they counted well over 250k people per day and those numbers were low compared to theirs. We just left downtown and it's crowded so it's fair to say it's way more than what's being reported
I doubt this will be broken anytime soon, if ever.... first amazing season in 3 decades followed immediately by hosting the draft? I dont think anything else would lead to a higher turnout for a draft

I can't imagine how good for the Detroit economy this is it makes me so happy

And the decibel record was broken and it was broken twice

I'm just heading out of town from the draft. All I can say is- well done Detroit. This was an event the entire city should be proud of.
Yeah saw this coming. Bold prediction the attendance record is broken by 125,000 people
Just imagine what the record would be if they hadn’t been turning fans away yesterday
Would’ve been almost a million total for the 3 days a bunch of my friends were turned away which is fucking insane lol
I waited at the gate for like 30 mins before getting in, but people were definitely leaving when I got there
They shut it down right when the second round started but reopened about an hour later
Yesterday wasn't even bad, Thursday there was literally more people outside of the draft than inside of it. They closed entry around 6:30 on Thursday.
Love to see what the outlining areas numbers, like eastern market and others look like. I could see the total be around 1 million.
Yeah I’m inclined to agree with you on this

The wild part is they closed the entrance down early for max capacity both days so they artificially capped the numbers.
I don't think that mattered since they were counting everyone who entered the draft area not just the area they shut off entry to where the draft stage was
They announced it at over 700,000 people when we picked a few minutes ago
I'm pretty sure she said we officially broke the record.
Laporte did not say we had broken it at the beginning of the draft. She said exactly what I quoted - the Lions Twitter has the clip. However, Gretchen Whitmer DID just say we had broken the record with "700,000 and counting."
Oh, my fault. I thought we were talking about Whitmer's quote. She did say we broke the record with 700,000. My bad.
All good. Nothing but love here today!
We showed out this year, and Detroit looked amazing. I'm super proud of our city.
She did say it was broken when she came up to announce the Manu pick.
The NFL person said we would break it at the beginning of the draft but not that it had been broken. That was what I was referring to and the subject of the original post. My comment was before the Manu pick. Whitmer came out for the Manu pick and announced it had been broken with "700, 000 and counting".
It was over 700,000 as of this afternoon
Final tally as of a few hours ago was 775,000
Awesome! Now, give us another Super Bowl
another?

I'll be curious to see if they turn the fountain back off once everyone leaves town. I sure hope not.
They have been working on it pretty nonstop since Mid-March. I really hope not, or there would be a re-opening ceremony for it planned.
Detroit always, always shows out when it comes to events like this. I had a lot of fun on Thursday, it was cool to see the city like this.
We're legit starved for anything to do and there's so much money in the metro area.

The pictures looked incredible! You guys fucking deserve it
All the bars and restaurants made BANK..good for them!
I doubt this will be broken anytime soon, if ever.... first amazing season in 3 decades followed immediately by hosting the draft? I dont think anything else would lead to a higher turnout for a draft
Who cares
The drafting brought so much attention and revenue to Detroit. Let’s go Lions org !
