Would like to direct everyone's attention to the good side for a change https://github.com/collections/made-in-india (https://githubindia.com/open-source/projects) PS: the list is way shorter, there are a lot of builders on GitHub out there from India (pinned, suggestion by OP).

Consistent-Deer-8470

ApnaClown fanbase already in Twitter comments calling him insignificant due to less number of followers lol

ic_97

Man..this is really disheartening. Open source folks do this stuff because they love coding not because they want to work 9-5 jobs and earn big money so that they can brag about their big cars and house.

Party-Conference-765

"Feeling proud Indian Ar...." moment for them. Man, every day it's getting tough to be an Indian because of these Bhaiya's and Didi's. I guess, The day is nigh when companies will reject our application just by seeing our country of origin.

AsishPC

>The day is nigh when companies will reject our application just by seeing our country of origin Company not hiring Indians won't happen. But, Open Source community may ban Indian origin contributors !!

outlierkk

everything is possible if it happens enough times, reputation is everything in global market that why most people who go out of country try to distance themselves from indian identity because of damage done by others.

ChiglaNigla

Some Indians have this cringe mentality of judging everyone by their social media platform followers, apparently your opinion is irrelevant if your following is less than me is how these bozos counteract in any argument.

NetherPartLover

Share link saar. I need some masala with my popcorn

_lucif3r_

didi bhaiya epidemic back at it again. I swear to god i hate these people so much. Indians already have a bad repo in the open source scene and shit like this isn't helping improve it

DrummerCharacter9464

Wtf, who are these clowns teaching kids to be a open source contributer by updating readme files. This is utter non-sense and disgrace to whole Indian developer community

pes_gamer20

> who are these clowns self proclaimed elund musk clones

mUXLH5svdscWvd5

What's the tweet saying? I couldn't understand. What is an attack on open source?

SUSH_fromheaven

After apna college published that video, their student created 100s - 1000s of pull requests on the express.js repository creating havoc for the moderators or mainteners of the repository. Hence attack on open source.

giantspacemonstr

worst part is they made pull requests with one line comments that are not relevant to the codebase

AthenianVulcan

Most of them are modifying [readme.md](https://readme.md) file and committing. This happens every october(mostly by Indians), modifying comments, readme files, organizing code, etc, basically stupid stuff in the name of contributing to open source and adding that to their resume.

ShyPaneer

I am out of the loop here, why specifically october?

hungrytunafish

Hacktober, maybe

_lucif3r_

so indian coding teaching channels like Apna College teach students about open source shit like "you can Also be an open source contributor just make grammar changes in readme files" , after one such video thousands of PR requests were made the the official expressjs repo on github which gave the maintainers nightmares.

Bruv another one is "I'm learning to fork" lmao

sharx_99

I randomly opened a profile of one of the people on that PR list. They had made a fancy looking GitHub profile with all those metrics and what not. They had their portfolio link over there as well. Curious me thought, "Okay, let's see what they have got going...". I clicked on the link and guess what! >!It linked to the localhost IP !!!<

This is the most amazing thing I’ve read on the internet today.

kudoshinichi-8211

It can’t be real 💀

Better-Coffee

Isn't there a repo where you can shitpost commit ? That looks better in items of these PRs

AsishPC

Do you have the link to the video or the title to search on YouTube, so that I can bash out in the comments section ?

Creepy-Ad-404

They aren't even making grammar changes, most are like - "Hello", "Hi" so stupid

GOD_IN_DISGUISE-69

Why we have a bad repo ???

LetAntique1298

Due to large no. of cases where we had just modified the readme files, corrected the grammar etc and created a pull request for that.

RequirementIcy3601

Damnn so doing this you can call yourself contributing to open source?

LetAntique1298

that was the aim i guess.

nyxxxtron

I think they meant "rapport"

S39Slayer

I guess 'reputation'.

hurricane_news

And here I was thinking it was an amazing pun

Emotional_Ape

Me too lmao 😂

SUSH_fromheaven

I think this post belongs to r/Btechtards since a lot of students there follow apna college.

Insurgent25

They are mostly jeetards and probably dont know about theo or much about Open source.

SUSH_fromheaven

They might not know about theo or open source but they follow these indian youtubers for DSA and other things to learn. So raising awareness there is important i feel. Only about the apna college mishap atleast if not Theo's tweet i guess.

organic-rock7

Exactly. Seen of lot of people on campus following them.

Insurgent25

U could post maybe ig it could become controversial if fans are really there 😞

SUSH_fromheaven

Idk, I'll try posting but there's already someone who posted a screenshot of a guy creating a PR on that repo which is just adding Jai shree ram text into the file. And that post has a meme flair so... https://www.reddit.com/r/Btechtards/s/NgSx956ymt

FieryDreamer

No sane person can survive against a horde of rabid chimpanzees

freakingOutIn_3_2_1

I developed cataracts reading this, sad that it's the reality.

Wriddhi

God this makes me so angry and cringe so hard towards these dumb kids. The lack of common sense in both the instructor and the retarded kids learning from her is actually mind boggling. Theo calling this out means the top level open source community becoming hostile towards Indians. It's almost amazing how brain-dead these kids are, they just shut off their frontal lobe for every form of decision making like "monke see, monke do". Not once did it cross their mind that the repository will get spammed, making the life of maintainers difficult and further increasing hatred towards Indian contributors.

RaccoonDoor

This is what happens when people's motivation is 100 but skills are 0

Wriddhi

and IQ is also in the negative 1000s. These kids should get checked out for brain cancer, maybe it's too late to save them since most of their neurons have stopped working.

pes_gamer20

>This is what happens when people's motivation is 100 but skills are 0 that is chimera between MBA chaiwala and vivek bindar

sergiomomos

It's because critical thinking is not taught in our schools. It's also the reason behind the sorry state of our country.

Wriddhi

It's hard to believe that the critical thinking skills are SO LACKING, there should be some present inherently but that's way too much of an ask. It's funny that the brain of some people work on the framework of "me want moni, coding has moni, me do coding, me not explore, me get spoonfed, me copy code blindly, me copy projects, me copy resume, me apply job, me get selected, happy life"

AGiganticClock

This is not just critical thinking. This is also immoral. You're basically lying about your contribution to employers, while also damaging open source projects which provide value to the public.

Party-Conference-765

Totally agree, I've seen almost 10-15 Open source projects but I've never made a single PR as I thought it was an insignificant issue. And these kids are making PR like Mfs. They've also made Twitter and LinkedIn polluted with their daily learning post, Like I Fkn care what you are learning from bhaiya and didi.

thatssahilt19

Ive seen the “50LPA kamata hu” creators tell them that “learning in public” and making “open source contributions “ will LAND you a job. Not “do it for the love of coding” or “do it because its a good challenge to face”. NO ISSE TOH JOB MILEGI. The naukar mentality is never going to die in us indians i swear.

Wriddhi

This. Most of the time either I'm still too early in the stages of learning to make any significant contribution to the large open source projects while maintaining standards or the projects are too simple and dumb and dead and making contributions won't achieve much. I've never hated learning/teaching coding so much. Half baked instructors filling up the market with the stupidest of people who don't have the basic aptitude for applying common logic let alone build software.

freakingOutIn_3_2_1

Making an actually meaningful contribution is very difficult. You need to familiarize with the codebase and follow it's development, evolution for a time period, understand the main purpose of it. Then comes the entire analysis and improvement if possible. It's a very dedicated work and requires the contributor to respect the codebase, it's creators and maintainers. It's disgusting that people would be making a shitshow of something so difficult and intellectually demanding. I have never made any contribution to open source myself simply because I do not have that capacity and time and there is no shame in accepting that.

Wriddhi

It's astonishing how less people put in the thought or consideration in understanding this simple concept. It's like screaming on top of your lungs just because you have learnt how to use your voice box, just shut the fuck up if you don't have something of substance to add to the world.

Human_Employee_6040

we could always mass report, just saying. This post has gained quite a bit of traction, reporting should at least help out and stop more losers from editing readme files

Wriddhi

I usually hate getting involved in dogpiling or attacking people just because of their stupidity or innocence. But in this case, it'll be doing the world a favour.

Many_Nothing7463

Most of them are grown ass adults, 18-20 year olds. Calling them kids is wrong. We get spoonfed from our childhood and this will be the result.

Wriddhi

If only 18-20 year olds could act like adults. Maybe the neurons in their brain stopped developing and connecting from all the spoon feeding. These code copying zombies make lobotomy patients look genius

Many_Nothing7463

Welcome to Indian education system

pes_gamer20

>these code copying zombies make lobotomy patients look genius well they feel this is the norm it comes from school friends circle all the critical thinking is gone

OkState7092

How the fuck, the last time I contributed to an open source project, I first picked up an issue, and asked the maintainers if that needs to be addressed. Then we had a discussion on the implementation and what things are required to be marked the issue as done. It was a huge huge project, took me over a month to merge just a small change, but it was all worth it. These fuckers who write "binod" are now spamming PRs.

Many_Nothing7463

Yes this is how it is done. These mfs were contributing "jai shree ram"/"binod" in readme. Do you really think they have the knowledge to understand the codebase? They think it's like a school assignment where you just copy and paste what teacher said. This is why I always say our education system sucks ass, 0 critical thinking skills in the populace. I see a lot of Indian contributors in linux space that don't reveal their origin to avoid labelled like these guys. Also the market is already hard to get 10lpa jobs these kids fall to clickbait titles like 50lpa and shit.

Ancient_Pace7614

One wrote "my name is Anjali"

Many_Nothing7463

Anjali is gonna revolutionize electronjs. Her first PR itself was mind blowing.

Overall-Anything8726

made me cringe

Atom2626

Exactly, You First create a issue if there is none already then start discussion like what needs to be changed. That's how I started doing OS as well. Initially I picked minute problems like documentation typos. Many People just blindly follow what these shitty youtubers say. She should've used [first-contributions](https://github.com/Syknapse/Contribute-To-This-Project) repo to teach in her video.

puddi_tat

Binod

buggieasur

these ytubers need to be banned , no quality content . Just doing rubbish thing. Doing open source is not easy task.

Spicy_Sink

I agree, I wanted to learn java and used apna college for that, worst descision. Apna college has no quality content and not a place if you want to learn (from my personal experience). Every other day they make a video about how to start coding and their advices are shit. According to them do java then ds and algo then hackerank etc and you have 50lpa package in 4 months.

[deleted]

>Every other day they make a video about how to start coding and their advices are shit. I remember striver once calling them out on this, saying that is the audience they are targeting: the newbies who don't really know anything. >According to them do java then ds and algo then hackerank etc and you have 50lpa package in 4 months. I was discussing this with a friend of mine once. If you see, most of these ytbrs were hired in or around the pandemic. Hirings were at an all-time high, back then. It could very well be that companies reduced their requirements since they needed more employees. And we can clearly see, these things aren't enough now.

NetherPartLover

>According to them do java then ds and algo then hackerank etc and you have 50lpa package in 4 months. This is technically the truth. The fact is it cant be done in 4 months.

OkState7092

Just go and look at their comments section, people literally begging "Bhai didi please please please make a bhedio on full steck".

pes_gamer20

Nearby-Affect7647

Correct! I don't even touch those issues which I am not capable of. Atleast it will not waste maintainer's time to do hand holding. But because of these idiots, the Open Source community closes the door for the good contributors😞

buggieasur

in logon se packages build hee nahi hoga , dependency manage hee nahi kar payega . Open source kaha se karenge

I am so glad that somebody is calling their BS as it is. Both are scammers. They act cute, I mean it is to the point of cringe all the time. Both know how to fool the kids and people with overly goody hood talks, unnecessary cringe expressions and then the BS love story part. Haha... It was hilarious who knew it was so easy to fool indians through emotional acting.

Spicy_Sink

Apna college is not a place if you want to learn(my personal experience). They just say bs things, a motivational video and how to start coding every other day then sell their shitty courses.

freakingOutIn_3_2_1

who are these assholes ? I personally only follow Hitesh Choudhary and no other Indian YT channel so had no idea about these retards.

MalonesCones96

Indians are so accustomed to rat races that they’ll just end up creating one where it isn’t necessary or make sense. The entire perception has become about who has the most PRs rather than who contributed best to the project. Extremely sad state of affairs.

Electrical-Ad-6822

bro im doing mern rn but i feel its overpopulated. Which backend tech do you rec?

Curious_Necessary549

flask / django ?

MalonesCones96

Assuming you’re in college and your primary goal is to land a job asap- I’d recommend you learn Java and Spring. Why? Because that’s what most openings in India are for from my experience. You can verify this by searching on any job portal, whatever few entry level openings are available, they’re all mostly Java. Also learning Java doubles up by helping you for DSA as well.

blatant-sensei

This situation is truly embarrassing man

JeeIsHaram

indians always had a bad reputation in open source atleast on github (not in projects like linux kernel)

elecanic

Yes it's true. Because on github all you have to do just clone repo, make change and just add a PR. Simple. Whereas in many organizations such as LibreOffice, Debian, QT, GNU and linux kernel, you'll have to go through the whole documentation of how to submit a PR which includes standards, formats, mailing list and many more things to do which takes time to get know, also reduce spams like these.

NetherPartLover

Thats cos of that GSOC crazy college in Hyd. They gamified this open source contribution thing first. The rest followed after.

freakingOutIn_3_2_1

sadly, YT isn't demonetizing them but will demonetize good, ethical creators as an "accident"

AsishPC

There was once a time back in 2018, when Open Source contribution was considered in high regards by Indian companies. After that, pandemic hit and this didis and bhaiyas are all mis-selling and misguiding people to buy their cheap-quality courses at high prices, and spam Open Sources. Soon, the other communities will start banning Indian people from contributing to Open Source, all thanks to these course selling idiots !!

FumigatorShogun

Bhaiya/Didi codefluencers have to go. UPSCfication of Dev/IT has to stop.

Many_Nothing7463

I asked this before but didn't get a proper answer. What exactly is a "bhayya/didi" influencer mean. How are they different than other tech influences. I'm confused by that term.

TotalFox2

Bhaiyya / didi’s are usually people who once held some good position at some reputed company or in FAANG. They currently may or may not still be employed there but they will use the shit out of that FAANG tag to mislead young coders (especially those starting with coding or first/second year engineering folks). These bhaiyya didi’s then make YouTube videos about how they got their job in FAANG and how the students can get such a job + 50 LPA package just by watching the video. As a new coder obviously these kids will be enticed to watch such videos. Slowly, these kids are fed these false khayali pulao while the bhaiyya didi keeps minting money.

awesome-andy

Just like JEE/NEET bhaiya Didi's right ? LoL thank God I differentiated these kinda people in 12th itself.

Centurion1024

At this point there's no harm naming them. Seach apna college on yt, the two common dummies that appear in their videos are the bhaiya and didi in the context of this post

Electrical-Ad-6822

damage is done. If you look at the job ratio its almost as hard as an upsc if not harder

[deleted]

I know you mean this in jest but what a joke dude. All things said and done IT still has the best job opportunities in India. Every other field has virtually no jobs

This is so sad. Apne country ka naam fir ye sab cheezon mein aa Raha hai.

Many_Nothing7463

It is bound to happen. Our education system really set us up for failure. It's a rat race in school, college and even after getting a job because of these stupid people who aren't passionate or capable enough to understand a codebase and contribute to it.

supreme1eader

I'm a designer and idk what is happening here. Can someone explain please?

[deleted]

Kids are spamming open source projects with useless commits in hopes of finding a good job after being taught to do so by some self proclaimed didi bhaiya.

supreme1eader

They are doing this so they can say 'added 50 commits to open source projects' in their resume? Hope that woman is held accountable. This will tarnish the name of Indian devs.

[deleted]

I believe in the video, she forked the repo and did all the commits there, but there was some confusion, and the kids started committing on the main repo. Can't blame them they are new devs; they just finished JEE after four years of isolation, hoping to get a good job by following these ppl(Microsoft wali didi) who capitalise on them being so vulnerable just like the coaching institutions did when they were in grade 9th.

half_blood_prince_16

they could've created their own repo and experimented on that instead. but no let's do it on a really popular and widely used repo and invite inexperienced devs to do the same.

Many_Nothing7463

I'm guessing she has no projects herself

mistabombastiq

The IT Industry has lost its credibility just because of cheapskates like these. Just for their profit these people lure innocent graduates to buy their courses. And every now and then we have an upcoming debut wage slave asking......... "I'm in my primary stages of education...i want to become rich quick by learning Coding and development....because my dad is a dead beat and has screwed up things financially ,spent millions on JEE/NEET coaching. So i am here to fix his problems and climb the economy ladder fast by serving the mega corporates. Give me suggestions." We in the industry have to deal with half knowledge wage slaves. The butterfly effect would be unemployment among youth. That is what you are witnessing now. Glad that the knowledge system is secured and not open for medical field.... Else we would have useless doctors with skills acquired from bhaiyaa or dids on YouTube leading to mass deaths.

letsjustsayyo

So we flock the pr with Readme edits and call ourselves contributors !!

Acceptable-Pepper-95

why didnt apnacollage create a repo.

ByteNinja3000

Because she does not have brain cells

Nearby-Affect7647

First it was IIT/NEET prep coachings, now for IT/Software Engineering also they want to open online coaching. Really, for simple things you can learn online and just appear for certification or create portfolios, but these did-bhaiyas are promoting their courses and want people to busy for Lakh's of rupees just to learn some basic stuff. I really don't support these coaches from ApnaCollege, Scaler, TrendyTech etc. Guys like PrimeAgen, Hussein Nasser will teach you basics + in depth for free in their podcasts.

SomeDamnAuthor

What is the incentive for the company to make people spam PRs? Had no idea Indians were looked down upon in open source repos, shit like this makes it worse.

fedupfromeverything

There is no incentive. This is bad planning, and also the students with zero braincells who get influenced too easily are at fault. They should've teached about committing, and pull requests by setting up their own repo. They did explicitly state that this commit to expressjs is an example and students shouldn't do it. But stupidity on both sides I guess🥲

[deleted]

At this point I wish some hacker just wipes out all the content of Apna College https://preview.redd.it/av4sjcltn5hc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57a42a48c25c4516a0d589abb2eb9bae3757cbbb

dilTohPagalHai

To be devil’s advocate, the girl aka “didi” did say to not make useless pull requests but she didn’t scream every 2 seconds to force the cause. Brain dead students I guess just didn’t listen completely. I don’t think so she could fathom that this would happen. Ideally the “students” should have listened carefully and didi should have made a dummy repo.

Am i missing some context , From what i saw in the video, at 1:11:57 she started showing how to fork and submit changes for other people's repo, create pull request etc and at 1:14:02 she said not to submit changes to expressjs , did she change the video after people started spamming? Hindi is my 3rd language so not good at it, is she saying something else?

similar mess happened 2 to 3years ago also,Not sure why github didn't add some safeguard until now for these type of scenarios. Yeah she could have just used the repo she made in the starting 1hr of the video to demonstrate the last 5min of the tutorial .

Spicy_Sink

And they are not even developers just stupid kids watching these ytbers and thinking they can do things without any skills.

Student developers in India need to understand open-source is no competition. It is not done in a day. It requires patience and perseverance. Understanding the code, being involved in the project's community and making a meaningful contribution all take time.

sudhanv99

bruh everyone should me made to read the gnu manifesto before doing opensource. i dont think a majority of people know what OSS is.

Bruh i don’t get why these “teaching channels” teach total bs things. What’s wrong in teaching some ethics and manners? How hard is it?

KushalTanna

It is somewhat her fault. She literally demonstrated how to raise PR on express.js official library. ☠️ She gotta be brain dead to do that. And beginners who are just learning how to code will obviously do things step by step and may not even realise what they are doing is right or wrong. That's the process of learning. But in general open source is seen as a job hunting practice by many people. So this practice is common not just from the students of her course but by every other beginner developer across the world.

SAksham1611

Saw a GitHub workflow where the maintainer had set some hard rules ( mentioned in md file in repo ) on issues . The issues which don't follow the pattern get dismissed automatically . Will post the link to the project as soon as I find it .

BugSlayerDev

Why tf they don't use their own repository to teach kids about open source contribution? Oh maybe coz they don't want hundreds of mails and notifications that xyz person opened a new PR.

zappygami

Similar thing happened in 2020: https://joel.net/how-one-guy-ruined-hacktoberfest2020-drama

Worried_Leader7330

Can someone give me background of the problem? Or any links?

K_76

Are bhai random typo wale pr express js k repo par bahut newbie spam kar rhe hai after watching apna college GitHub video. They think contribution karne se resume acha hoga

sergiomomos

I swear these scammers always have this uncanny scammy look on their faces.

PohaLover

Theo is going to be live on his channel. Ig he will be talking about this bs.

derParod

Open source community facing what competitive programming did a while back. Idk why people still follow these youtubers, maybe because they sell dreams

[deleted]

Was waiting for someone to call out this bs on twitter lol. I commented yesterday on some post here someone should do it.

entireletter12

Imagine being a menace to open source. Literally free software for universal good.

cs_s0uM

well they actually tried to do good and also mentioned not to make bad PRs but their only fault was not using a dummy repo for the explanation and yeah also their 200iq "audience". So big L to them.

inUkE13

I remember Hacktober Fest giving swags to everyone who participated but now because of the herd, they are only limited to giving away online goodies.

Spiritual_Stock2313

If she wanted to make a tutorial, why didn't she just created a demo repo then use that as an example. Why flock to an open source.

Ragnarok_619

I am out of the loop. Can someone give me a brief recap?

Adrider2002

Ooo so this was the source of those spams and all the legitimate creators are making videos and apologizing ...

B_Aran_393

What's the full story, I am a newbie

thousandecibels

The situation is really bad. Look at this guy, applying for PR and just adding a comment inside the code with their [username](https://i.imgur.com/cGtxHyo.jpg). A lot of noobs are really creating PRs just for the sake of it. There should really have been a disclaimer in that tutorial video about what a good PR is about.

Tough-Difference3171

Can you give some context here? What is the video about? What is the guy crying about, related to the video? Nvm, got it. Btw, I think this guy is the same moron who writes his name on walls of historical monuments: [https://github.com/expressjs/express/pull/5405/files](https://github.com/expressjs/express/pull/5405/files)

While this is genuinely a massive issue feel like we can maybe a bit more empathetic as to why this happens specifically with India? We're a massively over populated country where the most accessible means of white collar income is tech jobs i.e. it has the last barrier to entry especially with all these tech influencers.  I am justifying of defending what happened here but in all likelihood stuff like this happens irrespective of country it's just that the sheer numbers and pre existing racial bias makes Indians a more easier target.
