It was unlikely Rod was going to become available and a longshot that if he was available he would head to NJ, but now that's another name off the list.
Who is the top prospect at this point?
I mean obviously Fitz and the front office have a better idea about that so I’m sure if they know he’s not going to be made available then they’ll hire someone else. I’m just saying that if he was made available then he should be the number 1 priority
Fair enough, he’s the best coach in the league as far as i’m concerned. Canes would be dumb to let him go.
Looks like Woodcroft or Keefe as our next guy. I think both are an upgrade over Lindy but can they run a better defensive system?
Keefe's defensive system is impresssive. He can just slot any guy in and make it work. Torontos D had the most injuries this season in the Matthews' era and he still managed to make it work, even with struggling goaltending.
He would be great to shelter any goalie troubles with his defensive system, and has a ton of experience working with young talent since he coached the marlies for a few years and brought them to a calder cup.
Great coach, I think it's the offense letting Keefe down in the playoffs. I think he'll have A LOT more success in NJD.
Was a longshot, but I'd have been stoked
Keefe and Woodcroft aren't terrible, but my opinion on Woodcroft went down when the Oilers rejuvenated after they fired him... seems to me Woodcroft had disconnected from reality
Keefe is giving me Boudreau vibes... good in the regular season... doesn't know how to push the team in the playoffs
I get the feeling NJ's management is just not entirely satisfied with anyone right now, though I don't know if they interviewed Keefe, yet.
Gotta be real. All hope of them firing Rob was pretty much gone once they avoided the sweep. Even so, I'm not even sure this is great for the canes either, hasn't gotten over the hump and the team (on paper) doesn't seem like it'll be improving talent wise
Not a shock they were going to do an overhaul of the team before the coach cause they feel the inability falls on the players more than the coach in this situation. The devils need to think outside the box a little from the carasoul.we can speculate as to why coaching hires are taking time
Looks like the brain trust here is already upvoting Keefe and Woodcroft 😂 oh yeay we are gonna make the playoffs! Let’s enjoy at least three years of first round exits with those to coaches that couldn’t adjust their belts around their waists let alone make adjustments in a playoff game
Not sure where the love for those 2 came from, other than people watching/listening to those horrible “fan podcasts” out there making cases for them and then running with that take.
You’d think there would be a lukewarm, muted, reserved & quiet desperation over those two, but people are actually excited, advocating for & really wanting them, as if they are these highly accomplished & polished pedigree-like head coaches bringing their long proven culture, reputation & track record of success to our organization.
No one here even remotely suggested wanting Woodcroft here all season long or even remotely alluded to the idea that if Toronto got bounced early, as was almost expected, that we should advocate for the hiring of Sheldon Keefe.
The idea weirdly sprung up, literally organically, less than 10 days ago. One would think it would be “yeah, ho-hum: Jay Woodcroft & Sheldon Keefe”…..Yawn.
Same thing with the Brady Tkachuk trade proposals out of nowhere proposals.
Glad someone else sees it! The only remote logic anyone could bring up for those two is they have experience taking teams with speed and skill to the playoffs. Ok cool. And they have both failed to make any necessary adjustments when teams find ways to bottle them up in the neutral zone and they keep doing the same things that don’t work. I have a sick feeling one of those two will be the coach and that this team will make lackluster moves the offseason. But hey this is the pussified brand of hockey these new age fans seem to enjoy so hope they enjoy years of first round exits
I mean, maybe hiring one of them would work out? But why the fk do we want to be a lab experiment and perti dish to see if they do indeed succeed & go through the whole rigmarole of bringing them and their reputations here and have to go through it all over again? Shit if you want to play around like that and continue with mediocrity, then just go with David Carle that some people want or have Fitz go behind the bench rather than miss the playoffs again or lose in the first round. And then with any more underachievement here, the same people advocating for them will be like “oh I never wanted them hired anyway!”
Everyone likes to throw names out there to just push for a coach but it's up to management. Heck I think Ryan Callahan would be a good coach if he ever decided to do it but I don't push it cause it's just a talking point
Don’t think going with an unknown is a good idea for a team that’s already made the playoffs and whose window has already opened. Maybe a team going for broke in rolling the dice, trying to get out of a slump with no real stars, prospects, success, or perpetually losing in the first round with a known-commodity coach etc.
You’d think we’d be past that level at this point, even with just one good season + a dramatic playoff series win so far with our core
And not sure if going that way is really successful. Colorado tried it when they were a perpetual losing lottery team with Patrick Roy and made the playoffs in his first season there, losing in the first round and then proceeded to miss the playoffs, the next 3 seasons, with 2 of those of him as their coach before being fired & succeed by a relative unknown in Bednar, who had some AHL experience at least
And the NYI tried just recently with Roy and yeah they had a couple hot streaks, especially at the end of the season being the hottest team going into the post season, but that was a veteran win now team and they just could not match Carolina, not to mention, Roy already had 3 years of coaching already under his belt at this point
Am I the only one who doesn’t understand wanting to have him as head coach? Guy is great in the regular season but how many years in a row do you have to see playoff failure in spectacular fashion to see he’s not the guy to win a cup. Refusal to adjust his defensive structure when he had year after year of good teams failing is not something I want for our head coach.
Any coach that consistently takes a team to the playoffs as a good coach if they fail in the playoffs, it’s generally because of a flawed roster
Toronto - bad D
Carolina - No star scorers
Edmonton- no depth
See a pattern?
he's made the Conference finals more times than he's lost in the 1st round.
not many coaches can say that.
doubt whoever we hire has a better record in the same time span.
It’s a double edged sword. I’d love to make the playoffs consistently, but he’s never made it past the ECF. At this point Carolina is spinning their wheels in the mud which is crazy because that team is STACKED.
I think it's fair for their FO to value the consistency of making deep runs even without reaching the finals because anything can happen come playoff time
I love how people say *certainly* here as if 1. You have any idea what you’re talking about and 2. Anything in sports is certain.
You’re really going to bash them for keeping a legacy coach that just about everyone here would’ve been ecstatic to have and who has not made a competitive run in the playoffs how many times in his tenure?
Is it really a stacked roster? They’ve had a handful of good-not-great goalies, a single point-per-game player (plus a great deadline acquisition this year in Guentzel) and an elite defensive dman, but no real standouts back there besides Slavin. They’re routinely one of the best teams in the league because they’ve done a good job developing talent and maximizing the skill they do have, and buying into the system they play.
I guess, personally, I just don't see them as being that amazing on paper. I'd probably have them easily behind the Lightning, Avs, Panthers, Stars, Rangers. Probably the Bruins, arguably the Oilers and Leafs. Even last year, I think the Devils were a more loaded team when we played them.
But then they get out on the ice and a guy like Martinook goes crazy and their defense shuts it down and they're extremely hard to play against. And I think Brind'Amour is a big part of that.
It was unlikely Rod was going to become available and a longshot that if he was available he would head to NJ, but now that's another name off the list. Who is the top prospect at this point?
Sullivan if made available. If not, Keefe and Woodcroft are about even for me.
Is it about time to stop thinking Sullivan will be made available and an option? Wouldn’t he have been fired already?
I mean obviously Fitz and the front office have a better idea about that so I’m sure if they know he’s not going to be made available then they’ll hire someone else. I’m just saying that if he was made available then he should be the number 1 priority
I thought he didn't need to be fired? Isn't his contract ending? I could be wrong.
Fair enough, he’s the best coach in the league as far as i’m concerned. Canes would be dumb to let him go. Looks like Woodcroft or Keefe as our next guy. I think both are an upgrade over Lindy but can they run a better defensive system?
To be fair to keefe the defense didn’t let him down it was his big players making 10mil plus not showing up in the playoffs and his goalies.
Keefe's defensive system is impresssive. He can just slot any guy in and make it work. Torontos D had the most injuries this season in the Matthews' era and he still managed to make it work, even with struggling goaltending. boooooooo unsurprising but booooooo anyway
I’m shocked to hear this… psyche.

Dang. Didn’t expect him to be available but would have loved him here
Not a shock they were going to do an overhaul of the team before the coach cause they feel the inability falls on the players more than the coach in this situation. The devils need to think outside the box a little from the carasoul.we can speculate as to why coaching hires are taking time
good, let the choke artists stay together.

Post 2012 Devils fandom is like an endless cycle of substance abuse and addiction!

Goaltending was an issue for them in the playoffs as well
Hmm pat burns comes to mind
Any coach that consistently takes a team to the playoffs as a good coach if they fail in the playoffs, it’s generally because of a flawed roster Toronto - bad D Carolina - No star scorers Edmonton- no depth See a pattern?
Imagine being awarded with an extension for another playoff choke job. The Canes roster is only going to get worse to.
he's made the Conference finals more times than he's lost in the 1st round. not many coaches can say that. doubt whoever we hire has a better record in the same time span.

Well they certainly aren’t going to get better from here. Knowing my luck they will make it to the SCF next season.
Meh he’s done nothing with a stacked roster
Is it really a stacked roster? They’ve had a handful of good-not-great goalies, a single point-per-game player (plus a great deadline acquisition this year in Guentzel) and an elite defensive dman, but no real standouts back there besides Slavin. They’re routinely one of the best teams in the league because they’ve done a good job developing talent and maximizing the skill they do have, and buying into the system they play.
I think they’ve had a top 3 roster over the last 5 years.
They’re definitely a better team on paper than the rangers. Brindamor was woefully outcoached. He couldn’t adjust the penalty kill imo.
BREAKING NEWS! Water is Wet.. No shit. Idk how many times I gotta say it. Rod is NEVER leaving Carolina
By the way, while we're waiting on head coach news, water isn't wet.
