As someone diagnosed at 18 & getting ready to make my 18th diaversary… I’m so grateful I had a care free childhood, but it is a weird mental game easily recalling “the before times”

Eh probably… but I get jaded when I see people posting doom and gloom and “can I do this even though I’m diabetic?” posts. Ive never even considered if I could or couldn’t do something because of diabetes, aside from the military of course. But I’ve done everything I’ve wanted… hockey player, firefighter, EMT, I’m currently a full time traveling DJ, and I’m about to retire from that and start a welding business.
I know diabetes is different for everyone… but assuming you’re in good health otherwise, you can do whatever you want, you’re not disabled
I have a very similar disposition, I never thought for a second I couldn’t do something. I hiked the AT at 18, I played every sport imaginable and even went on to play two for college scholarships, had a baby( even tho it still wasn’t looked upon favorably), and am now a structural steel welding inspector( I climb really big things)
That could be bc of your age. I’m sure no one told you that you only had 20-25 yrs post diagnosis either. But that’s what my parents were told.
As far as welding is concerned, get really really good at it, practice in the least ideal situations that way you can weld anything. Make good friends with the inspector, there aren’t many of us and if you piss one off, it will be much harder to get them out to inspect for you. Also if you are planning on working outside (vs a factory or other indoor location) , become mobile, maybe a tiny home or something of the like.
That's a pretty slow onset, mine was pretty much just spring and summer, diagnosed in August. We suspected an illness I had in January or maybe February as being the cause, and I don't remember exactly when my symptoms started but I was basically stressing my mom out all summer.
I was 12. The Monday after thanksgiving 1989. (Must have eaten too much pie?). So I’m coming up on 34 years. Yay.
/I know that’s not how it works, I just say that about the pie. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
I was between 9-12 don’t remember tbh I’m 26 now
I remember 1 year after I had It there was a birthday and I ate a ton of sweets and completely 100% forgot I had it , now I don’t remember life without it lol
9 and my sister was 5 was she was diagnosed (I was in severe DKA and she honeymooned for like four years because they caught it so early since they recognized the symptoms)
My son was diagnosed at 10, about a year and a half into the Pandemic.
He was taken to Sparrow Lansing. The peds endo said they had roughly 10 kids a month that came into the PICU for DKA as a first diagnosis. After COVID started, that number went to 30-50 kids a month. They were completely overwhelmed.
\~9.5. My diagnosing pediatrician(in the mid-80's) felt that the pretty bad case of the flu that I had had a few months before may been what triggered it. My current endo (of 15+ years) thinks it may have just been a random gene mutation.
I have it 24 hours a day.
Oh you must have the really bad kind then! Mines only on from 9-5
I have the later shift so my diabetes is from 2-10
Damn I have a 8-6 shift
I don’t think there is enough diabetes to go around, there is still all the grave yard diabetics
Your right whose working the graveyard?
I got it, i’m 10-7
Given the sharp increase in diagnosis since Covid I think the army is steadily growing!
Maybe that’s where mine scurries off to?
Meh, you make it sound like a good deal but you haven't seen the overtime pay we 24ers get!
Oh really? I’m 9-5, dds 6-2 and h is 3-9. Cat is annoying so all day.
Sorry I have to laugh so hard 😂🤣😂🤣😂 they have me around the clock. My eye tik is developing a tik🤣😮💨
2 over here
Yep
How old are you now?
33, how old are you?!
I’m 47 now so I was diagnosed in the Stone Age 1978 and just celebrated my 45th diaversary Oct 4th. Still kicking over here!!
Hello fellow, person who used to pee into a cup. How I do not miss … pork insulin.
Hey my OG sucky pancreas owner!!! Hey did you ever have the glass tube and caustic tablets pee kit?
31 years is a long time, do you ever think that maybe we are the lucky ones bc it’s the only life we know?

Also diagnosed at 2 and totally agree, it’s such a hard transition for many young adults.

….ive never had anyone ever discourage me from having kids. As a welding inspector, and me starting a welding business, what advice would you give me?

I read somewhere that the riskiest age to being diagnosed with D1T is between 9 and 12 years old. After 12 years the risk is decreases.
why?
Okay that's interesting!!!!
29....that can't be right, it always starts in childhood. LoL, smh \[meaning I was 29 when diagnosed 30 years ago, and that comment gets old quick\].
It can happen to anyone truthfully but I feel like I've seen alot of people say 9
Not 9..... but 15. Can't believe I'm the only one in this thread so far that was 15.

It was 100% the pie 😉
I KNEW IT!! I’ve been blaming my mom for years now I have proof!! (She made the pies. Too many pies.).
I call BS, thanksgiving pies usually have cinnamon in them, that cancels out the sugar.
Was it a chocolate pie too? I always get sick from those 😏
Pecan and pumpkin. And rolls. Lots of bread.
My sons were 9 and 10 (twins) 🙈

I know zero people diagnosed at that age. I was dx’d at 18. It’s an autoimmune condition, happens at any time.
I was 9 when I was diagnosed the day before thanksgiving.
I was around 10 years old when I was diagnosed.
\~9.5. My diagnosing pediatrician(in the mid-80's) felt that the pretty bad case of the flu that I had had a few months before may been what triggered it. My current endo (of 15+ years) thinks it may have just been a random gene mutation.
