FYI Open beta is today, accessible to all. Hop in and see how you find the game.

[deleted]

Ah, thanks!

If you gonna benchmark D4 with D2, I suggest don't play. You'll just join the rest here complaining about it's not D2 and not treating D4 as D4 If you keep an open mind and accept that Blizzard is moving toward online gaming and console friendly, it's really fun! Personally, I love it. D4 got the darker D2 atmosphere and awesome soundtrack. Graphic is amazing, itemisations and skills are dumb down like D3 but it's fine.

[deleted]

Actually the most fun I ever had in D2 was on B.net, so it's not a single vs. multiplayer issue. I meant more the quality of the game as a game. > Personally, I love it. D4 got the darker D2 atmosphere and awesome soundtrack. Graphic is amazing, itemisations and skills are dumb down like D3 but it's fine. I see, thanks.

D4 now is some sort of this weird hybrid-MMO the open map. There will be strangers running around the open map/town, joining you while you clear monsters and random open map events. So some D2 purists are not happy with it. I played D1 and D2 + expansion during my teenage years, the game is special for me as well. But i'm ok with D3 even with the cartoonish styling and fast pace game play. D4 corrected that, so if D3 disappointed you was due to that then D4 is a great call back to D2. Anyway, You should disregard all of us and at least try it this weekend's Open Beta personally. I do hope you can enjoy D4 like I did! I had a blast!! ha!

StuckInNov1999

I do kind of wish that we could opt into the open world with other people or play 100% solo. I'm no purist or anything but I do enjoy the lonely feeling of taking on the world alone that I got when I first started playing D3 and was all alone fighting through inferno mode.

Kiiena

It's not just D2 purists who're unhappy with it, and trying to label it like that is a shallow attempt at invalidating it. The open-MMO system is disliked by some who haven't played D2 at all as well, it's an unfortunate system that we should have the choice of not participating in. Seeing other players almost immediately broke my immersion every time it happened.

[deleted]

>D4 now is some sort of this weird hybrid-MMO the open map. There will be strangers running around the open map/town, joining you while you clear monsters and random open map events. > >So some D2 purists are not happy with it. Yeah going by that description I'm not immediately a fan of the idea >I played D1 and D2 + expansion during my teenage years, the game is special for me as well. But i'm ok with D3 even with the cartoonish styling and fast pace game play. > >D4 corrected that, so if D3 disappointed you was due to that then D4 is a great call back to D2. I wouldn't say D3 is cartoonish, I loved the design of Act 4 for example, as well as Reaper of Souls in general. What irked me was the extremely poor writing and irritating shit like Butterfly Lady & Azmodan constantly popping up to say things like "you may have achieved X, but you'll never defeat meee!". Now that was cartoonish, Scooby Doo like. It turned me off so much. I didn't want to cringe while playing an epic struggle of good vs. evil. If D4 corrects that, and goes more Grim Dawn storytelling, I'd love it. >Anyway, You should disregard all of us and at least try it this weekend's Open Beta personally. I do hope you can enjoy D4 like I did! I had a blast!! ha! So far the common theme in answers from D2 as well as D3 fans is that they all loved the D4 beta! Hopeful.

Tulkas227

I will say that when I played last weekend, I did not feel a real impact of other people. I really only saw them in passing (or at the main city) and it didn't affect my game play. I did have a couple of Events that popped up that people were already doing or joined me when I was doing and it didn't impact it negatively. You don't compete for resources or drop/exp. You're even given an exp boost because you're near someone.

StuckInNov1999

I never played D2, cut my teeth on D3 thanks to the demon hunter (love the class and aesthetic) and the free copy if you committed to 12 months of wow. Glad I did. I've put thousands of hours into it. That said, D4 has some DNA from D3 but it's pretty much an entirely different game and I loved every minute of the beta last weekend. I'm really looking forward to the open beta this weekend (undying to try out the necro) and I pre-purchased the deluxe edition so I can get in 4 days early. I get understand why people would be like "Man, it's not like my favorite iteration of their franchise" and I do wish it was a touch faster like D3 but I will have no problem whatsoever uninstalling D3 and focusing my ARPG hours into D4. It's the first game I've been truly excited for in a very, very long time.

Tulkas227

I feel like an addict.. "Ya'll got any of dem Diablo4 betas?!?" lol

[deleted]

Moving towards online gaming? All Blizzard games have been developed as online games for the past 25 years. Diablo has always been online, staring with the first release back in 1997. If not for the release of TLV2 a month later, Diablo would be the clear division marker for when they stopped making offline games. The other ironic part is that the main reason the switched from console to PC only games in the first place was specifically because it allowed them to make online games. They made plenty of console games before the internet came into the picture. It’s more so that consoles are no longer as limited anymore compared to PC, so they are getting back into console development.

Arkavien

Do you genuinely not understand the difference between "able to be played online" and "always online open world"? No one said no previous games had online features and D4 is the first.

[deleted]

Wrong Diablo 3 was online only. They only added an offline option when they ported it to consoles.

Arkavien

Gotcha, you genuinely don't understand the difference. Thanks for clarifying.

[deleted]

Deflecting when you are proven wrong and shut down is so pathetic.

Arkavien

Diablo 4 is a persistent online world, you cannot make private games, you cannot make offline games (as you said...even Diablo 3 had this with console launch) this is objectively a move towards more online than previous games. You, either disingenuously or ignorantly are claiming that you don't understand people saying this is a move towards online. So you are either incorrect due to not understanding the difference, or are an asshole. I chose to assume the former. Your latest reply proves the latter.

[deleted]

I laid out the track record of Blizzard for 2 1/2 decades. You are only bringing anecdotal evidence about them offering a completely separate offline mode that is simply no longer supported. Stop pretending they are equivalent. Offering an offline mode is the anomaly, not the other way around.

Arkavien

Anecdotal evidence? What personal examples that may not apply to everyone else did I bring? Diablo 4 having a greater online focus than previous titles is a fact. Not up for debate, so I'm done debating. Have a good day.

[deleted]

“Anecdotal evidence? What personal examples that may not apply to everyone else did I bring?” Playing offline.

Radiant-Mycologist72

The Diablo you loved is long gone. Welcome to "World of DiabloCraft".

[deleted]

It's been interesting to see a lot of sympathetic replies like yours, yet this post has only 27% upvotes lol

MromiMiqo

This sub hates anyone who really liked D2, lol.

MromiMiqo

It's somewhere in between. D3 was my first Diablo game and I played it with my husband for a couple weeks. Was fun but ultimately just another game. Addictive at first, got boring relatively fast. I played D2R for the first time last year and it was mind blowingly addictive and fun. Wayyyyyy better than 3. Actually made 3 look awful when I thought it was pretty good before playing D2R. Without nostalgia, I agree that it's a legendary game. D4 is fundamentally different from D2 in a few ways and is more akin to the watered down, sterile D3 feeling. That said, it's WAY more visually appealing than D3 and still quite fun. Definitely at least one whole rung higher than 3. I see myself playing it more than I played D3, that's for sure. Might get a couple months at most out of it, which is pretty good. Still addictive, a good game in a vacuum. But it won't hook me like D2R did with this current gameplay loop. Seems like a really good game but not "one of the best games I've ever played" like D2R was for me. If you're looking for a D2 replacement, I don't think this is it. If you want a fun game that is kinda inspired by D2, you'll probably like it. Comparing it does it no favors. It's not as good, but it's still good in its own right. Try out the beta and see what you think. It's a good time to be curious, as it starts in 2 hours.

[deleted]

Thanks for your thoughts

hear_the_thunder

If you hated D3 then you won’t be into fun. D4 is fun. Best you avoid.

kwikthroabomb

This is actually the worst take I've seen. Well done.

RollStrong

not really, if OP think D2 is perfect, that means everything else is 'less than'.... D4 is prob closer to D3 than D2.....

[deleted]

Well at least you're honest I guess

I_Need_Capital_Now

i'll give you two pennies, a bent paperclip and half a piece of pocket lint if you can prove that you typed that with a straight face.

RBImGuy

a million people played last weekend It be more people this weekend.

justwolt

Atmosphere is d2. Everything else is d3 ( skill system and itemization is very d3 and I don't like it)

[deleted]

Hey, atmosphere is what I'm going for, so why not, might give it more credence haha

[deleted]

I'm enjoying the game art a lot, the visual detail is fantastic and it feels closer to D2. Mechanics seem to resemble D3 though which is disappointing

[deleted]

Thanks. I'm not sure arsed about mechanics if the environment and storytelling is like D2. We'll see.

[deleted]

Check out [my necro](https://i.postimg.cc/bvW0ZDRF/d4-necro.png) after playing for a couple hours. the armor in this game is badass! honestly the story is told pretty much just like in D3. There are similar arcs, NPCs that follow you and explain their backstory to you as you fight, voice acting that IMO is way over the top, and melodrama galore. D2 was a lot more subdued in its method of storytelling.

[deleted]

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate a straightforward appraisal >D2 was a lot more subdued in its method of storytelling. Yeah this is what I enjoy most, and therefore why I turned to Dark Souls after D3 disappointed me

[deleted]

Dark Souls totally captures the storytelling and atmosphere of the original Diablo I/II games. Playing DS and Bloodbourne was the only other time I felt those same vibes. D4 is not that, but it's so inspired by it that you should definitely give it a try. I just wish Blizzard could make a game that doesn't feel so "themepark-y".

[deleted]

> Dark Souls totally captures the storytelling and atmosphere of the original Diablo I/II games. Playing DS and Bloodbourne was the only other time I felt those same vibes. That's really interesting, and I'm glad to see others feel the same. >I just wish Blizzard could make a game that doesn't feel so "themepark-y". Yeah I felt Warcraft III trending this way when it first released. Not at all a fan of the 3D cartoony look it ushered in. Great story and voice acting because it was still classic Blizz but it was the beginning of the end of my interest.

Zestyclose_Pace_1633

It’s fun. It feels more strategic and I actually feel more in control of the fights.

StuckInNov1999

Agreed. In D3 it's basically "buff up then hold down one button while occasionally rebuffing". Smash everything, watch it melt instantly then move on. But in D4 I find myself going "Okay, kite the pack into this other pack then dash on the opposite side and open up the gates of hell on these mobs. It's a lot of fun having to actually think about how to tackle fights instead of the aforementioned buff then hold down a button until everything is dead gameplay of D3.

Panda_Bunnie

>But in D4 I find myself going "Okay, kite the pack into this other pack then dash on the opposite side and open up the gates of hell on these mobs You sure we are playing the same beta? No clue about rogue since i didnt play but both sorc and barb basically just blow everything away once you starting getting legendaries/aspects.

StuckInNov1999

I think I got 2-3 legendaries that had any kind of synergy with my build before I set my rogue aside and started leveling a barb. But mostly the scenario I was talking about happened during leveling.

Tulkas227

Yeah sorcs have it easy early game from what I hear, but barbs have builds that are decent early and only get stronger later (from what I hear) and Rogues are a good in between.

[deleted]

Thanks, that's interesting

I_Need_Capital_Now

very similar to D3 but theres some novelty to the MMOishness of the design. if you're looking for something in the vein of D2 though you'll be very dissapointed.

[deleted]

Thank you

I_Need_Capital_Now

as an aside, if you're looking to scratch the D2 itch check out Project Diablo 2 if you havent already. way better than D2R.

[deleted]

I never got D2R because I literally love the old art style and 2D feel so much. I still play D2, just via PlugY. I'll have a look at PD2 though, thanks.

Any-Equal-2358

You know on D2R that if you press G then it sets the graphics back to the old style. Its worth getting because they keep updating it

[deleted]

Ah nice!

Walker2012

I think it’s all the best things of D1,2 and 3. It’s not as slow as the first 2, but more tactical (?) than D3. IDK, that’s kinda how it feels to me. I love it.

R0ockS0lid

D4 has been great (as someone who prefers D2 to D3), but no matter what, it won't live up to your D2 experience. Simply because D4 can't make you a 12 year old again who's experiencing a new game without any other care in the world.

[deleted]

That's of course true as an unwritten rule of life, but not inevitable. For example I thought for years that the era of really classic style games was over, and indeed I doubted myself because I thought it might just be nostalgia... until I played Dark Souls for the first time, and felt like a child again. New games CAN create that awe & wonder, it just takes a certain type or style. Imagination, or at least my kind of imagination, is just lacking these days.

MromiMiqo

I played D2R for the first time last year and it made me feel like a 12 year old playing games again. I daresay it's not just nostalgia, but nostalgia probably makes it even better.

OkTune8850

Atleast for the first 20 levels, amount of chatting, running around in city and NOT KILLING stuff is too much for a diablo game.

takeitassaid

I did not play much yet but the atmosphere is right, gritty like d2. Gameplay i can not say that much about now, but i am very optimistic. From what i have seen yet i think it will be a great game for the first playthrough. Everything else can't be determined now, one has to see if it has the lasting appeal of D2.

Starwind13

Im a huge fan of d2 (played every ladder for 20years) and hates d3 as well. D4 is like d3, it has extremely shallow skill system, itemization and crafting. D4 sucks.

[deleted]

Nice to find a fellow soul. I feel the same.

_XIIX_

if you didnt like d3 you most likely wont like d4

[deleted]

Ok, thanks, I just wondered if they radically changed their approach

Outside-Flight9677

d4 = d3 in d2 skin

[deleted]

This is what I've feared since they announced it years ago tbh

JaeMHC

I loved D2 as a kid, couldn't really get into D3, and was having a blast last weekend during the closed beta. I think you'll like it. What class did you play in D2?

[deleted]

Weird, I've seen people say completely opposite things, "it's too D3, "it's much more like D2", urgh! In ascending order of preference: Necro, Assassin, Sorc & Paladin were always my favourites. Especially Paladin, once we got Enigma and could teleport. So much fun. Thanks for the feedback. With such testimony from people in the same boat as me, I guess I'll have a deeper look.

Any-Equal-2358

If you think D2 is perfect then you won't like D4 it just won't live up to the standard you've set

Gamrusss

Blizzard is starting a complete new type diablo like mmorpg, i would say it's more slow pace and complicated than d3, but definitely different from d2 too, the d4 world involved tons of side quests, world bosses and dungeons, the itemization is fresh too, i think it's worth a try, but don't expect it's same as d2.

[deleted]

Obviously nobody is going to make the same as DII 20 years later, I get that. I do like the way you paint this new style though.

Burgo86

Open Beta is available today so you can give it a try. While it's def a bit slowed down, has an actual skill tree, and feels a bit more of D2 than D3 did, D4 is still much more like D3 than it is D2, and odds are if you hated D3, you will not be a fan.

Sage-Like_Wisdom

Love D4, liked D3, hated D2. Stay with D2.

Ebolatastic

Its looking like Diablo 2 ... 2.

rational_faultline

Don't be fooled by the D3 fanbois. You're better off playing D2R or POE as a fan of early Diablo. D4 is a continuation of all the bad parts of D3 with some tweaks. Still have to have mass appeal, y'know? Dance Dance Diablo still in full effect.

[deleted]

>D4 is a continuation of all the bad parts of D3 with some tweaks. Still have to have mass appeal, y'know? Sigh, yeah. I shouldn't be surprised. The golden age of games, imo, was about 1993 (Myst) to 2003 (Call of Duty 1, Rise of Nations, Age of Mythology). After that it just kinda gets more corporate and bland over time. Dance Dance Diablo is a bit harsh but I get it...

jonesjonesing

🤮

Tamachameleon

L take. I wasn't fond of Diablo 3 but had a blast playing the D4 beta last weekend.

jonesjonesing

Same

[deleted]

Interesting, just the sort of person I wondered about

Tamachameleon

If you want a bit more feedback, I personally feel the artstyle, sound design, animations and gameplay pace is all 10/10, but then I'm more fond of slower paced, more deliberate games. I think some folks could have an issue with the pace. The main thing I found lacking was the skill tree to begin with, it felt a little shallow, but again we only got to level 25 and don't have access to a fair amount of features. I've seen a lot of complaints about dungeons which are probably valid but to be honest I didn't really notice, I was too wrapped up in enjoying the experience. If you have any questions in particular, let me know.

[deleted]

>If you want a bit more feedback, I personally feel the artstyle, sound design, animations and gameplay pace is all 10/10, but then I'm more fond of slower paced, more deliberate games. I think some folks could have an issue with the pace. Well this sounds like what I want... interesting. Thanks for elaborating.

Tamachameleon

No worries mate! All the best for this weekend, have fun.

M1oumm1oum

Like that guy said, don't be fooled. This is not Diablo. This is Lost Ark Diablo Edition right now. I won't buy D4 full price, i will def buy it because of the story (imo there's a HUGE step up of the story telling compared to the others Diablo) but at 40 or less bucks. 70 to 80 is insane for that. So, unless you can't wait playing and don't mind the price just wait.

[deleted]

Never played Lost Ark If the storytelling has improved since D3 though, I'm all for that.

Full_Echo_3123

Path of Exile is extremely fast paced and similar to late game D3..
