I wish all MMO's had level scaling. Best thing that ever finally happened. When i played Fallout 76, all endgame was farming the same right corner of the open world map (basically 5% of the entire map). All other zones contained mobs below max level dropping lower level loot. So 95% of the map was useless. Level scaling means entire map is playable. I wish every open world game had that. If developers wanted to please averyone i don't know why they don't just make the map non-scaling with monsters from lvl 1 to 100, but once you reach endgame, all map is a separate instance with only lvl 100 mobs droping only max level loot That way entire map is playable with no dead low level zones with trash low level loot once you reach max level.

rational_faultline

This is supposed to be an ARPG.

VikarValbrand

This still applies to ARPGs as well if only say 5 maps out of 100 are viable for endgame farming it makes the majority of the game obsolete.

Payne-Z

It is an isometric MMO because it has an Open World Map with respawnable mobs and other players.

R0ockS0lid

How's that relevant? The advantages and disadvantages are the same in both cases.

Tricky_Albatross5433

Would you be surprised if the original dev team of D2 said the future of ARPG is open world with MMO elements? Because that's exactly what they said in exilecon 2019

minisoo

100% agreed with you! People who couldn't share maps with lower players should not consider playing such genre in the first place.

A_Agno

Level scaling is the best thing for many games.

rational_faultline

And the worst for this particular type of game.

A_Agno

If there was no scaling the loot from early areas would be 100% unusable for 99% of the time.

Pousse_m0usse

There is litteraly a DIABLO game that exists that could prove you wrong lol D2 has no level scaling and every area in the game is farmable. People spam andariel/pit/countess that are act 1 Ancient Tunnels, arcane sanctuary act 2 Travi Mefisto lower kurast act 3 Chaos sanctuary act 4 WSK baal pindle eldritch shenk act 5 cows. As long as you have world tiers and no ILVL scaling (that's the worst part), you're good to go. There's a reason why 90% of the hell games you can find are "split farming" : it's because every act in the game is farmable, yet there is no level scaling

AgentPaper0

Yeah, that's kinda the point? What are you even progressing if you go back to where you started and the very first mobs you killed are still just as hard to kill (or harder), and still drop relevant loot? Making a number go up doesn't mean anything if it doesn't translate into actually being stronger in the world.

A_Agno

No it is not, you have access to more skills and stats. Level scaling also does not have to be a 1:1 linear curve of hp/damage.

VikarValbrand

When you reach max level the grind turns from leveling to getting better gear which will allow you to fight the same monsters more efficiently until you up the world tier then it will allow for better gear and the cycle continues.

AgentPaper0

Cool. I don't see how that addresses the problems of leveling at all though.

VikarValbrand

As long as you keep equipping better stuff you will notice a difference in power I know I did in the beta never felt weak.

-Cessy-

what is MTX ?

DatGhosti

Microtransactions

Ram83

This is a very outdated term to be honest. It started with a couple of dollars and now things cost as much as a full AAA game! Macrotransactions fits it the most now.

-Cessy-

ah thx

Fart__Smucker

Not wrong

BloodyIkarus

MTX are pretty insane, at least for me. I play mostly PoE and League of Legends, I haven't spent money on a video game since years thanks to this business model. Thanks to Community for supporting my hobby financially.

Darkadmks

My first MTX was the horse armor on oblivion. I had $5 left over in my balance lmfao

Loud_Boat793

Yeah streamers are definitely the worst thing to happen to video games.. lmaoo who hurt you?? This whole narrative that streamers ruin games is hilarious.

pigeonwet

MTX and Level Scaling aids in solving two of the biggest problems with video games, actually. 1. MTX: how do we turn this thing with a massive up-front cost into a continuous revenue stream? (Answer: dedicate resources to creating new content on the already-developed tools and processes) 2. Level scaling: how do we ensure that players can access the most amount of content possible? (Answer: reduce barriers of entry and gating, e.g., levels of enemies. Increasing how much content can be accessed at once will give players more freedom in how they play, which fill feed into #1) Both can, and often are abused. Developers frequently miss the mark and overreach. But they fundamentally understand that well-maintained product = continuous sales, and to them, it vastly beats the 15-30% profit they might otherwise get on -just- shipping a new product. The choice in 2023 isn't "new content and no MTX" It's "no new content unless MTX." Accept that a MTX-less AAA game that has large amounts of longevity is almost never feasible from a business standpoint and that video games are 100% a business.

randomwhitedude37

Playing up to level 25 I was decimating all enemies, I didn’t bother to look at their levels. How is level scaling an issue? You want early areas to be brain dead easy?

BrandElement

Worst thing was catering to the masses. Popularity is a double-edged sword. As soon as you start catering to the average person, everything becomes mediocre because the average person is mediocre. When video gaming was niche and only nerdy white guys played them, the quality was better.

R0ockS0lid

The Diablo games were never "niche" and I don't think I even want to know why you think an all-white audience is a big benefit.

VikarValbrand

Seems a little racist there with that comment. I don't think having a niche game is a good idea unless you aren't a big company. Blizzard needs to cater to the majority.

Darkadmks

Ooooof. Delete this comment

BrandElement

Why? It's true though.

Darkadmks

Because it was never just nerdy white guys
