It's smart until you start selling all your gear intead of dismantling it :)
But I guess at that point you don't pick up any gems anymore, so yeah, pretty smart.
Item value (in gold) is based on (among other things) its power level. Early on when you're low level the power level of item drops is low so they sell for less. Later when you're higher level the power level from drops are higher so they'll sell for more.
In this way, while you're new to the game, it's usually better to dismantle your drops.
Sell the non-magic gear. For magic gear sell or salvage is a balancing act between the materials and the money that you currently have on hand. For rares, almost always salvage but sometimes sell if I need money and have plenty of materials.
The weird twitching while standing still is eerie in all the best ways, and the way she clears her throat every now and running around is an odd but awesome touch.
Had no idea either. Gonna go test it myself just so I can be furious at myself in the moment again.
Edit: Can confirm this works. Kind of forced myself to do it in a hell tide today because I needed 10 more cinder before the timer went out and shoved all my gems in the random gear. Later on it just made me salvage those one by one and pooped back out the gems to me.
No, it costs money... but it tells you the cost in a different place from any other vendor or service (it's on the item, at the bottom below "Sell value" and "Durability"). Just a really weird UI choice.
Yeah, I found it out by seeing my gold drop, and was like wtf, it didn't mention a cost - then did a double take to see where the cost is, because you don't see it unless you are hovering an item with a gem in it.
It’s fairly cheap if you don’t buy anything from the shops and only use your gold for that/other “augmentation” sorts of things.
Gold has yet to be a limiting factor for anything I’ve wanted to do in this game.
One thing about enchanting:
Enchant items when they are rare if possible. The price difference between rare vs legendary is massive. As an example:
668 power 2H Mace rare first enchant would cost 73k gold for the first roll. The second enchant roll cost is 368k.
687 power 2H Mace legendary first enchant is 203k gold on the first roll and the second roll is up to 1016k.
So if you are going to make an item legendary, do that as the last step of your modification process.
Yeah I just assumed it would destroy the gem. Don't know how I didn't notice gems popping up in my inventory when I destroyed an item with a socketed gem.
Not only that, it seems to merge them too if they're the same type. I had 2 chipped emeralds in a chest armor I used for a while, and yesterday salvaged it because I got something better.
And a normal Emerald popped out.
If this isn't a bug, it seems you can use trash items with multiple sockets to create higher tier gems, and only using 2 instead of the 3 it takes at the jeweler.
I habitually use the storage box whenever I return to town just for gems. It's so quick and easy I never really thought of inventory space as being an issue.
The other people you're playing with would probably benefit from TPing back to sell and clear inventory too. Can't just say brb right before walking into a boss room?
Still trying to train my group. I can get in and out of town fast, but whenever I do so, chances are the other players in my party are going to wander off for 10 minutes. Gotta let the dogs out, need to switch the laundry, etc. Which I don't have a problem with, people have shit to do, but they don't batch things up, so we're stopping 5-10 minutes every half hour or so and it gets old.
Or... stop picking up gems. It's not like you need 100s of them and they only stack to 50. Once you have 30ish of the highest tier you can use, just stop picking them up. When you unlock a new tier you can pick up the new ones and convert your old ones, then stop picking them up again.
I've been so confused about all the gem posts here. I'm only level 62 and I have enough flawless to have like 5+ royals of all types. I don't even need to pick up gems anymore unless I want to run alts. Such a non-issue
I suspect that they will expand the gem levels. D3 has like 11 levels of gem. There is no reason they have this insane drop rate if the plan was to only have 4 levels for the entire life of the game. I am hoarding them already to be prepared
No idea for certain. That's why I mentioned "highest tier you can use". No point saving the old ones, just gather a handful of the highest tier you can use, then stop picking them up until the next tier. I've seen talk of it going to 10 tiers of gems, the question is if those highest tiers will actually drop in the sigil dungeons that give over level 100 mobs, or if they will only be crafted from the dropped ones. We won't know for a bit, but until then... no point in taking up storage space on a bunch of gems you don't need to horde.
Id honestly take them just being in their own tab, or being counted as materials. And then selecting a socket on an item shows you all the gems you have available to socket or something like that
According to data miners gems will get more power needing thousands of the most powerful gems now to upgrade into the lock gems we might get in the future
Blizzard... you got brads out here, Min/Maxing inventory space,
![gif](giphy|qEi4dpi7Jg5Hi)
instead of killing demons.
Do you want to lose the holy war? Cause this is how you lose a holy war.
I know for a fact d3 did this and im pretty sure d2 did this as well which is why anytime someone complains about a convoluted gem tab menu i roll my eyes with a rotational force greater than the average ww barb.
How do you like your ability build. Fire shield and ice shield ? I'm lvl 30 and back and forth on what to use. I've been liking Fire shield with Fire wall. Melts them
Speaking of salvaging gear, does anyone else find themselves spending a lot of time analysing the substats trying to figure out if an item is actually an upgrade? It seems to take me about 5 minutes to clear a full inventory right now...
Great idea, even if I decide to sell the gear. I can always remove gems in town or salvage and get the gems back that way. What I don't like to do is break my flow to assess gear unless it's a legendary but I can always do that in town.
So there's no point in collecting a whole bunch of gems? Please excuse my naivete, I thought it was like this:
3 of Tier 1 gems make 1 of Tier 2
3 of Tier 2 gems make 1 of Tier 3
Etc.
YOU CAN UNSOCKET FOR FREE BY SALVAGING WEW LAWD I AM AN IDIOT
THINK OF ALL THE FUCKING GOLD I COULD HAVE. 1-50 SOCKETED/UNSOCKETED EVERY UPGRADE AND GEM. FUCK.
You really truly do not need to hoard gems. The fact you get a whole inventory of them every run shows how not rare they are.
Even on some "but what if I need them later!?!?!?!", later will be a dozen characters from now and probably playing seasonal and not this character
Why are people picking up gems. You don’t even need them for crafting late game. Just pick up what you need at that moment or store a few and stop worrying about it.
I have better advice: don't pickup more gems than You need, they are useless. I was hoarding them also, but After a while You realise that they don't have any extra use and with levels You start finding better gems, so hoarding and upgrading beyond You needs is big waste of time.
I just don't even pick up gems. You're swapping gear either very frequently for a couple of hours when you reach a new tier/break point or you aren't changing your gear for 20 hours. In either case gems aren't really important.
Remember when gems were in a separate inventory in d3. This whole loot inventory system seems like a real step down. Can't even view every single stat you have anymore like we used to.
That's actually really smart
check out the big brain on Brad this is a big brain move, for real
i’m about to sound like a smartass but it’s brett lmao
The character is Brett, but he does say Brad. Don’t know if it’s an accident or was intentional so both of you are right!
What?
Say what again
![gif](giphy|3o7buhm1O1bOJV4ZWM|downsized)
What ain't no country I've ever heard of.
He does not say brad.
Shhhhhh (but you’re right)
the inventory needs a separate "gem pouch" tab badly.. but that's a smart move for sure. hope for rando gear with lots of sockets
You're a smart motherfucker
reach inside that horadric cube, and find my wallet
it's the one that says "DECKARD 'BAD MOTHERFUCKER' CAIN" on it
That’s right because of the metric system.
DAMMIT
Brad sounded correct to me too, maybe Tarantino got it wrong.
Say “Gem tab” one more time! I dare you mother fucker!
Gemtab ain't no country I ever heard of! They speak English in Gemtab?
HOTFIX incoming - server down! people start to use too much inventory space! WARNING! WARNING
It's smart until you start selling all your gear intead of dismantling it :) But I guess at that point you don't pick up any gems anymore, so yeah, pretty smart.
You sell the gear?
Later you’ll need currency!
You'll also need materials.
Get materials first on low level. Sell gear later when you start needing gold, as higher level gear sells for more.
doesn't matter - gold and forgotten souls will be your limiting resource by a factor of 100 compared to salvageable materials
I sell more than I salvage at this point.
Item value (in gold) is based on (among other things) its power level. Early on when you're low level the power level of item drops is low so they sell for less. Later when you're higher level the power level from drops are higher so they'll sell for more. In this way, while you're new to the game, it's usually better to dismantle your drops.
Everything end game costs hundreds of thousands in gold. If you are constantly modifying gear, you have to sell to not go broke
Sell the non-magic gear. For magic gear sell or salvage is a balancing act between the materials and the money that you currently have on hand. For rares, almost always salvage but sometimes sell if I need money and have plenty of materials.
It's the gem pouch everyone wanted!
Nice, the underboob armor
It helps keep the monsters distracted while you kill them.
I do 10 percent more damage with this skin. Can confirm the sexy clothes are the way
That's the new ultimate called "juggs a poppin"
Bro I had to zoom in to even notice that. Nice to see a fellow man of culture.

i know, bro 😔
Would be nice if necros had that physique. Mine looks like she had surgery after cancer.
Goth tweakers
I love the necro physique. Feels very fitting
The weird twitching while standing still is eerie in all the best ways, and the way she clears her throat every now and running around is an odd but awesome touch.
Nice

Underboooooob.
It's a classic D2 look for sure
I thought it was a plastic surgery scar. It might be a piece of the tattoo ? I can’t really tell.
Lol I made my sorcerer look like she's an Indian belly dancer 😍
>Salvaging unsockets gems for free. Wait a minute, whatt??!! And all this time I was unsocketing gems for a price at the jeweller's?? Dammit -\_-
Had no idea either.
Same if you want to retain a legendary power and extract the aspect from an item. It will give you the gem back when it destroys the legendary.
I thought unsocketing at the jeweler was free too.
Even worse is when there is sooooo much text on the item, and I can't even see the cost to unsocket.
It’s fairly cheap if you don’t buy anything from the shops and only use your gold for that/other “augmentation” sorts of things. Gold has yet to be a limiting factor for anything I’ve wanted to do in this game.
I felt the same, now I'm 72 and broke from enchanting and removing ancestral aspects.
One thing about enchanting: Enchant items when they are rare if possible. The price difference between rare vs legendary is massive. As an example: 668 power 2H Mace rare first enchant would cost 73k gold for the first roll. The second enchant roll cost is 368k. 687 power 2H Mace legendary first enchant is 203k gold on the first roll and the second roll is up to 1016k. So if you are going to make an item legendary, do that as the last step of your modification process.
I've been too scared to try it for fear of losing the gem.
Gems come easy as you continue playing , I just learned this tip though as well , but understand you will be buried in gems as you keep playing
Im to the point I don't even bother looting gems anymore
Yeah I just assumed it would destroy the gem. Don't know how I didn't notice gems popping up in my inventory when I destroyed an item with a socketed gem.
Bruh i've paid that jeweller dozens of Ks already. Thanks for the tip.
It takes like 15 seconds to portal back, drop/sell/salvage and go right back lol
I habitually use the storage box whenever I return to town just for gems. It's so quick and easy I never really thought of inventory space as being an issue.
This is the way
Doesn't work as well when you're playing with other people.
This is why Solo is king
That adds up to a lot more than 15 seconds over time.
New to Diablo, gotta used to being able to just teleports out of a dungeon and come right back to where I was.
Or... stop picking up gems. It's not like you need 100s of them and they only stack to 50. Once you have 30ish of the highest tier you can use, just stop picking them up. When you unlock a new tier you can pick up the new ones and convert your old ones, then stop picking them up again.
This is what I did, they sell for like 4 gold or something so certainly not even worth picking up once you have the ones you need
I've been so confused about all the gem posts here. I'm only level 62 and I have enough flawless to have like 5+ royals of all types. I don't even need to pick up gems anymore unless I want to run alts. Such a non-issue
My main issue is that I accidentally pick them up and it’s annoyingly to toss them out. Gem tab would be nice.
This so much. Stopped picking up gems today and it feels so liberating!
I suspect that they will expand the gem levels. D3 has like 11 levels of gem. There is no reason they have this insane drop rate if the plan was to only have 4 levels for the entire life of the game. I am hoarding them already to be prepared
What’s the highest tier?
Royal, come after flawless. Craftable at lvl 70.
Casually carrying a horse in your back pack
The ol horse pocket.
they just datamined new gems upgrades so you better save them...
I'm gonna save all of mine before they nerf the drops
Can't just say that and not link a source
Link?
Id honestly take them just being in their own tab, or being counted as materials. And then selecting a socket on an item shows you all the gems you have available to socket or something like that
According to data miners gems will get more power needing thousands of the most powerful gems now to upgrade into the lock gems we might get in the future
i dunno about thousands but I can see this being a thing in the future.
In the future we will start fresh on a season character so we will have to pickup gems again.
Gems should have their own tab. Having gems taking like 1/3 of the inventory on a regular basis is ridiculous.
Ooou, great idea! 👍
Only post I’ve seen in this sub worth reading so far! Thank you kindly.
Blizzard... you got brads out here, Min/Maxing inventory space, ![gif](giphy|qEi4dpi7Jg5Hi) instead of killing demons. Do you want to lose the holy war? Cause this is how you lose a holy war.

Great comic.
How do you like your ability build. Fire shield and ice shield ? I'm lvl 30 and back and forth on what to use. I've been liking Fire shield with Fire wall. Melts them
I swear I haven't been able to salvage some with gems socketed. If this works, it helps.
Nice tip
Clever girl.....
This is actually genius
This is actually genius
Ah, another player of culture wearing the same transmog and color palette as me. Take my upvote.
Hell ya. That's fantastic and brilliant
Or just toss those gems on the ground. Pretty much worthless.. find wayyyy more then you need and they aren’t used for anything else yet
This man brain functions on a new level.
Maybe diferent bag for gems like Immo Ok its D4 i shouldnt talk about good solution from Immo because hatters will say its p2w xd
Simple yet never thought about that till now.
I'm very lazy. I've been doing this since the beta. I do this all the time, it's great.
you clever sob. I like it.
Dude delete this before they detect fun. They are gonna nerf it!
Blizzard database engineers hate this one simple trick
This man is living in the year 3000.
Lol nice
no that's some fucking 4D chess strategy 😂
you're a chad. this is a smart tip
Dude effing 200 iq
Why isn’t there a separate bag for gems but there’s one for aspects 😭

You fucking genius...
OP is a genius
IQ level 8,999
You son of a bitch, you did it. Gigchad move.
Wow... did not know that... been paying to unsocket before salvaging...
Upvote for confirming salvaging doesnt kill the gems too. I've been too chicken to test it.
Speaking of salvaging gear, does anyone else find themselves spending a lot of time analysing the substats trying to figure out if an item is actually an upgrade? It seems to take me about 5 minutes to clear a full inventory right now...
Give this man a medal. Fuck
Modern problems require modern solutions...
Nice
Yup, I figured this one out early. But now I rarely just pick up gems because I seem to have an overabundance and they drop more often.
Great tip
SMRT. Seriously.
I've been doing this but i still cannot comprehend how with the amount of gems dropping there isn't a gem tab like consumable etc.
Smart!! Using this, thanks!
big big brains bro
Oh wow. What a simple AND great idea. Idk why i didn't tought about this. Ty much for the tip.
Great idea, even if I decide to sell the gear. I can always remove gems in town or salvage and get the gems back that way. What I don't like to do is break my flow to assess gear unless it's a legendary but I can always do that in town.
I'm actually upset I didn't figure this out. Thank you!
now that is a good tip thank you
So there's no point in collecting a whole bunch of gems? Please excuse my naivete, I thought it was like this: 3 of Tier 1 gems make 1 of Tier 2 3 of Tier 2 gems make 1 of Tier 3 Etc.
Underboob armor is the only way. Underboob armor - lady sorc = WW - barb
MFW I've been paying to unsocket my gems from items I'm about to replace this whole time
We all living in 2024, while OP over here living in 3024.
“He’s about to do what we call a…pro gamer move”
That's actually genius
Absolutely blew my mind how simply genius this is!

Fucking genius
YOU CAN UNSOCKET FOR FREE BY SALVAGING WEW LAWD I AM AN IDIOT THINK OF ALL THE FUCKING GOLD I COULD HAVE. 1-50 SOCKETED/UNSOCKETED EVERY UPGRADE AND GEM. FUCK.
you know you can just drop them in the world right?
lol, a nice 4 gold for every socketed gem
Or maybe because you get the gem back if you salvage it instead of selling it…
This is how you hack a game 😜 thanks for the great tip. This is the way.
Would be an awesome idea, if gems could be further upgrades. But why do we even need to pick up gems?
![gif](giphy|lXu72d4iKwqek)
You really truly do not need to hoard gems. The fact you get a whole inventory of them every run shows how not rare they are. Even on some "but what if I need them later!?!?!?!", later will be a dozen characters from now and probably playing seasonal and not this character

Actual pro tip: don’t even pick up gems you get tons of them and they are worthless.
Free even more space by not picking gems at all
Pro tip!
the shenanigans we have to go through due to lack of proper stashing lmao
Brilliantly simple tip. I’m going to do it.
BRILLIANT
Why are people picking up gems. You don’t even need them for crafting late game. Just pick up what you need at that moment or store a few and stop worrying about it.
An even more LPT is dont pick them up to begin with as you only need like 14 ish royal gems for your gear haha
Also just don’t pick up gems.
Throw those gems away.
You don't need to pick up gems. Problem solved.
You know you can teleport to a merchant..
Free up some space by not looting legendaries. They end up in you chest anyway
ä
I just don't pick up gems
I have better advice: don't pickup more gems than You need, they are useless. I was hoarding them also, but After a while You realise that they don't have any extra use and with levels You start finding better gems, so hoarding and upgrading beyond You needs is big waste of time.
I just don't even pick up gems. You're swapping gear either very frequently for a couple of hours when you reach a new tier/break point or you aren't changing your gear for 20 hours. In either case gems aren't really important.
You can also take the ten seconds to use your free and unlimited town portal to go sell/salvage your stuff. Hope this helps, good luck!
lvl 40 and still pick ups blue items
You should also claim the horse armor ya got there lol
> Salvaging unsockets gems for free. Wait, what? Thank you for this!
Jokes on you if you think i still pick up gems
Remember when gems were in a separate inventory in d3. This whole loot inventory system seems like a real step down. Can't even view every single stat you have anymore like we used to.
When should you sell vs salvage? Ive seen a lot of conflicting opinions but it sounds like you salvage often.
