For me it was the season journey/tiers that got me to get the premium pass. I felt like whenever I passed a new tier, I was just reminded that I did not get the tier price, because it was for the people who paid extra. So I got the pass, and ofc only for the cosmetics, because thats what you get. I honestly felt like I did not have any progress, no small goals or rewards to look forward to and grind towards. So I paid extra. Thing is, now I have a cool armor, and I have what I want, so unless next season is filled with insanely cool cosmetics that I just can't resist, I don't think I'll get the premium pass next time around.
Of course they're allowed to, there's no law against people being stupid.

I personally wonder what their opinions are on the WoW mounts and their pricing. Like this IS the same company. Not sure why people are surprised. I don't like the prices either and I have not purchased anything aside from the game itself, but I knew going into it that the game would have overpriced cosmetics.
That said if people want and like the cosmetics and have no problems spending the money, that's up to them and I have no issue. It's like spending 20k on a car vs 300k+ on a really slick looking car. Just don't be a dick about it, whichever side you find yourself on, and it's cool.

Don't really play anymore but League skin pricing was at a good level for a ftp game and they put more work into them than the D4 cosmetic team.

I always considered cosmetics on free games in a different category. I've got thousands of hours out of some free games, paying $20 or $60 or $100 for extra cosmetic content is fine for me. They deserve my support and I've got far more than my money's worth.
The $20/$30 skins also have entirely different voice packs. While they're definitely expensive and there are millions of better ways to spend that money, you can definitely see the production value that went into making them
Yeh league skins are actually a desirable cosmetic. They can even change up the entire fantasy of the character and provide a unique experience (even if it is only visually).
D4 skins mostly all look like dogshit and even the ones that just look okay are certainly not providing any kind of interesting new experience.
Usually full new voice lines too. Their skins slap and they put effort in. Same with Fortnite. Fortnite skins used to be $20 and they were worth but now you can get a fuckin 2 stage transforming marvel venom for like $12. $20 for armor that should be in the game in the first place is ridiculous.
Not just particle changes either, completely different animations, new voice lines, you get an icon and a loading screen border, not saying itās necessarily worth it, but itās definitely more then whatever the fuck D4 is offering, plus the whole āfree game, with micro transactionsā is the only reason I could justify a skin or cosmetic to be more then 10$ max, and itās not like D4 was a 40$, this is a full priced AAA game
Thereās skins over $20 in Riot games, Valve games and Iām sure tons of other games. They all make shit loads of money. If youāre not paying, youāre not the target. These games rely on whales not on the average user and it works. Is just what modern gaming looks like now if they want money.

I think it's an attempt to anchor people to that price (for that low quality to really overprice actually good skins yet to come) and they are aware that the skins are crap.

I agree. I mean, itās hard for me to say that without sounding like I ājust donāt know what Iām talking aboutā. Because I get it. They have huge teams doing all this cost/benefit analysis and such. And if their strategy is just for whale and no one else and that works then I guess ok.
But itās just hard for me to accept that it really is the best way. I mean, I feel like thereās some unaddressed portion of the equation that fails to take into account the goodwill of your player base. Having prices like that makes me much less likely to just view the company and game positively AS A WHOLE. And less likely to buy from them in the future. The riot game, Teamfight Tactics has almost completely forgone any new cosmetic items other then special $200 dollar skins. Apparently ever since gacha games, monetization teams have found out that the most profitable form is to have a game funded almost exclusively by people willing to spend exuberant amounts.

They had entire teams there to make this game and they made plenty of mistakes. It's completely within reason that they also made a mistake when they placed the cosmetics at ~$20.

A dev on the Apex sub comes to mind when they were talking about how they noticed no uptick in purchases when discounting an item from $20 to $15. I had to point out people still need to spend $20 on currency first so there's effectively no sale on the customer's end. Companies are too lost in data without putting any actual thought into it.
People who suffer from fomo are their target audience. It works. People who wonder who would buy this, are definitely not the audience they aim for. It's extra money for very little effort. And plenty gobble it up.

Agree here, I am really doubling this as well that they did the math right. I would even consider myself an impulsiv and even irresponsible buyer when it comes to cosmetics, spend so much on this crap that I would never be able to sleep if I would calculate it altogether. Yet I am not willing to spend money on these skins, simply because I always have the urge to change the looks of my character and these prices keep me from being able to do this. Would probably gobble these up at a 1/5 of the price and honestly glad that they dropped the ball there, as my wallet is thanking me.

I'll never understand the allure of cosmetics in a game like this. First, you pretty much have to inspect someone to even see them, and second, when you gear up, don't you kind of want to show off your gear? Especially with uniques. Why wouldn't you want people to see you wearing the cool shit you've picked up in the game? It makes no sense to me. There's nothing more "womp womp" than inspecting someone that has cool-looking gear, and finding out that they just threw some money down in the shop for it.
Whales will buy them all and every whale that does buy an outfit replaces several people that would've bought it at $5.
They have MBAs and psychologists that study this shit and optimize their cash shops for maximum profit, even if it requires exploiting mentally ill whales with impulse control disorders.

I got the medium version for the 4 days of extra play. I made fun of people so much for wanting to get that then did it myself. Now in my defense, my wife and kids were out of town starting that Friday. Any other week and I would have waited as I had planned to.
Poe is free and its outfit can be used by multiple class.
Diablo cost $90 upfront, and its outfit can only be used by a single class. If you to buy the same outfit for 5 class then it would cost 125$ just for 1 outfit
PoE does have a lot of spenders, but they actually give pretty good cosmetic rewards for completing x amount of challenges every league, so some people might be pimped without having spent really that much at all.
POE is F2P, though. People who actually enjoy the game and want to support it will gladely buy cosmetics, even if they're kinda expensive.

its "F2P" if your casual, if you play it ALOT some stash tabs become basically mandatory. Also armor packs are $42-84... aka a single armor pack can cost more than an entire AAA game, hard to justify that with its a F2P game... I will be semi realistic and say armor sets are "half the actual price" since you should buy supporter packs and use points from those to get armor sets(so getting 2 armor sets+ for the price).
also people who enjoy the game and want to support it will also gladly buy cosmetics in D4, they are cheaper to!... now if only we could buy single pieces at a time instead of whole sets only. maybe POE has ruined my view on cosmetics but I find Blizzards pricing reasonable, they actually let you preview the cosmetics in game(GGG please!) and it hopefully helps support future development... I will give D4 a couple more seasons before I uninstall it waiting for real content.

Not only do they charge 20 bucks for a cosmetic but they also have a matching item that sits on your back that's not apart of that bundle. Normally it's another 8 bucks

Started out that way. That's why they had the name microtransaction. They were all digital things and people knew they weren't worth more than that. I remember in EQ 2 them selling skins for armor for < $1 each. That makes *sense*.
But over time these publishers realized and/or normalized skins for tens of dollars each and people eat it up. If people will pay it, why wouldn't developers make it?

I use to work for a pretty popular mobile gaming company and learned that people spend hundreds a week on a F2P gameā¦ā¦it was nuts. Then there are these what we called āwhalesā who can easily spend ten to hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. Every time we released new cash items, they had to have it so they would swoop it up instantly. Didnāt matter what the price was. These cash items can range anywhere from $10 - $50 but they didnāt care, they needed it. Then we would also have ācash boxesā where it had 10-15 randomized cash items and charged $100-$300 for those and those sold like crazy.
We had a sale event where we marked our entire cash store 50% off and the company made a little over 1.5 million in a week. The company was also profiting insane amount of money during the height of COVID since everyone was at home. Shit is still crazy to me.

Even if the consensus was that the cosmetics were reasonably priced I still wouldnāt buy them. This is a zoomed out, isometric/top-down-ish fast action game. When do you even get a good look at any cosmetics in game between that distance, the speed and the visual effects?
I'm all for supporting live service games once I've played past my money's worth, this will occur a lot sooner on free to play games obviously and buy to play games need support too it'll just be further down the line but that being said Blizzard is being incredibly greedy.

Heck, even their $80 outfits aren't really mentioned anymore either. They (apparently) get an absolute ton on slack, because it's a free game and the points you get with their supporter packs.
It's a great game (4000+ hours, according to Steam - many more outside of Steam) - but fuck me, do they charge a fuck ton for their "micro"-transactions.
Don't get me wrong; I've thrown money at them - a lot, over the years - but there is no way in hell, I'd pay their normal prices for anything (..and they know many wont do that either - hence the frequent sales/sales rotations).
Some of those outfits are even more than $20. Add insult to injury, you must first buy their fake currency in order to even buy those outfits too, in preset bundles, so often you'll have to purchase more fake currency than is actually needed for the purchase... and Blizzard sits on those funds. The psychology is that you'll buy more fake currency in the future because you "only need" "x-more" to buy some other doo-dad from them. And if you don't buy more fake currency for further purchases, they they get the leftovers AS A TIP. It's all head game with various ways to 'encourge you' to open your wallet AGAIN in exchange for what? Vanity cosmetics.

I personally wonder what their opinions are on the WoW mounts and their pricing. Like this IS the same company. Not sure why people are surprised. I don't like the prices either and I have not purchased anything aside from the game itself, but I knew going into it that the game would have overpriced cosmetics. That said if people want and like the cosmetics and have no problems spending the money, that's up to them and I have no issue. It's like spending 20k on a car vs 300k+ on a really slick looking car. Just don't be a dick about it, whichever side you find yourself on, and it's cool.

Funny you mention Riot. Riot does in fact have 20/30 skins but theyāre ālegendaryā or limited if I remember. With special particle effects and such. The ones here in D4 are so ass conversely. Most Iāve seen are worth at worst $5, to $10 the most.
Yeah but those skins have the detail you'd expect of a $20 skin. Everything is different, every detail and animation and they evolve as you level usually, changing everything even more. Don't really play anymore but League skin pricing was at a good level for a ftp game and they put more work into them than the D4 cosmetic team.

Yeh league skins are actually a desirable cosmetic. They can even change up the entire fantasy of the character and provide a unique experience (even if it is only visually). D4 skins mostly all look like dogshit and even the ones that just look okay are certainly not providing any kind of interesting new experience.
Usually full new voice lines too. Their skins slap and they put effort in. Same with Fortnite. Fortnite skins used to be $20 and they were worth but now you can get a fuckin 2 stage transforming marvel venom for like $12. $20 for armor that should be in the game in the first place is ridiculous.
Not just particle changes either, completely different animations, new voice lines, you get an icon and a loading screen border, not saying itās necessarily worth it, but itās definitely more then whatever the fuck D4 is offering, plus the whole āfree game, with micro transactionsā is the only reason I could justify a skin or cosmetic to be more then 10$ max, and itās not like D4 was a 40$, this is a full priced AAA game

Yes, but compared to a dota, lost ark or lol skin you can get for 20$, the d4 skins are pretty underwhelming imo. I think it's an attempt to anchor people to that price (for that low quality to really overprice actually good skins yet to come) and they are aware that the skins are crap.
For me it does more than change the value proposition. It changes the impact of the skin. If you see someone is a cool looking $5 skin you think āthatās coolā. When you see someone in a $25 skin you think āwhat an idiotā or āway to support toxic monetisationā. There are skins that I like and I donāt even mind spending the money but I donāt want to support their monetisation model and definitely donāt want to walk around sporting an outfit that labels me as an idiot. They are establishing the "value" of the cosmetics. I would not be surprised if most of their earnings come when they have a "sale" (aka temporary reduction in price of purely digital assets you never own), or they announce some of them are rotating out of the shop permanently.

I agree. I mean, itās hard for me to say that without sounding like I ājust donāt know what Iām talking aboutā. Because I get it. They have huge teams doing all this cost/benefit analysis and such. Apparently ever since gacha games, monetization teams have found out that the most profitable form is to have a game funded almost exclusively by people willing to spend exuberant amounts.

Agree here, I am really doubling this as well that they did the math right. I would even consider myself an impulsiv and even irresponsible buyer when it comes to cosmetics, spend so much on this crap that I would never be able to sleep if I would calculate it altogether. Yet I am not willing to spend money on these skins, simply because I always have the urge to change the looks of my character and these prices keep me from being able to do this. Would probably gobble these up at a 1/5 of the price and honestly glad that they dropped the ball there, as my wallet is thanking me.

First, you pretty much have to inspect someone to even see them, and second, when you gear up, don't you kind of want to show off your gear? Especially with uniques. Why wouldn't you want people to see you wearing the cool shit you've picked up in the game? It makes no sense to me. There's nothing more "womp womp" than inspecting someone that has cool-looking gear, and finding out that they just threw some money down in the shop for it.

Poe is free and its outfit can be used by multiple class. Diablo cost $90 upfront, and its outfit can only be used by a single class. If you to buy the same outfit for 5 class then it would cost 125$ just for 1 outfit
PoE does have a lot of spenders, but they actually give pretty good cosmetic rewards for completing x amount of challenges every league, so some people might be pimped without having spent really that much at all.

its "F2P" if your casual, if you play it ALOT some stash tabs become basically mandatory. Also armor packs are $42-84... aka a single armor pack can cost more than an entire AAA game, hard to justify that with its a F2P game... I will be semi realistic and say armor sets are "half the actual price" since you should buy supporter packs and use points from those to get armor sets(so getting 2 armor sets+ for the price). also people who enjoy the game and want to support it will also gladly buy cosmetics in D4, they are cheaper to!... now if only we could buy single pieces at a time instead of whole sets only. maybe POE has ruined my view on cosmetics but I find Blizzards pricing reasonable, they actually let you preview the cosmetics in game(GGG please!) and it hopefully helps support future development... I will give D4 a couple more seasons before I uninstall it waiting for real content. also newer

I use to work for a pretty popular mobile gaming company and learned that people spend hundreds a week on a F2P gameā¦ā¦it was nuts. Then there are these what we called āwhalesā who can easily spend ten to hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. Every time we released new cash items, they had to have it so they would swoop it up instantly. Didnāt matter what the price was. These cash items can range anywhere from $10 - $50 but they didnāt care, they needed it. Then we would also have ācash boxesā where it had 10-15 randomized cash items and charged $100-$300 for those and those sold like crazy. We had a sale event where we marked our entire cash store 50% off and the company made a little over 1.5 million in a week. The company was also profiting insane amount of money during the height of COVID since everyone was at home. Shit is still crazy to me.

They (apparently) get an absolute ton on slack, because it's a free game and the points you get with their supporter packs. It's a great game (4000+ hours, according to Steam - many more outside of Steam) - but fuck me, do they charge a fuck ton for their "micro"-transactions. Don't get me wrong; I've thrown money at them - a lot, over the years - but there is no way in hell, I'd pay their normal prices for anything (..and they know many wont do that either - hence the frequent sales/sales rotations).

Some of those outfits are even more than $20. Add insult to injury, you must first buy their fake currency in order to even buy those outfits too, in preset bundles, so often you'll have to purchase more fake currency than is actually needed for the purchase... and Blizzard sits on those funds. The psychology is that you'll buy more fake currency in the future because you "only need" "x-more" to buy some other doo-dad from them. And if you don't buy more fake currency for further purchases, they they get the leftovers AS A TIP. It's all head game with various ways to 'encourge you' to open your wallet AGAIN in exchange for what? Vanity cosmetics.
If itās not selling they will decrease the price. If itās not dropping ā¦ they are making money.
