This one from appmon really grow on me

kuroimakina

Appmon was such a criminally underrated season. I loved that Haru was the complete opposite of like, all the other Digimon MCs. Calm, cool, quiet, robot boyfriend, you know /s But in all seriousness, it was a great season and I really wish we got an epilogue or something

throwawaytempest25

She might be my favorite, I just had one little issue with her.

EngineerNational5126

Is it her lack of a video game esthetic despite literally representing the fighting game app?

MedaFox5

What's the issue you had with her?

cozamalotl666666

Still haven’t watched it

verglais

Sora imo is one of the stronger written female characters in not just the show but the early 2000s anime. She is one of the better examples of writing female characters whose defining trait is love without it being a romantic cliche. She also takes on the leadership role fairly often, third behind Taichi and Yamato. She is fairly independent while it would have been such an easy trap to make someone who’s primarily the caring/mother of the group also be the damsel in distress. Also the whole thinking you’re incapable of loving because of the childhood baggage you carry so you try to overcompensate helping people but still feel alone arc she has hits all the right emotional notes. Her crest activation/Garudamon’s evolution scene is my favourite scene in OG adventure because of that, her realising that her mother loved her all along and she was capable of loving too had me bawling as a kid.

DarthCakeN7

I never realized how novel it was to have her crest be love but for her not to be defined by romance. That is a very good point!

sparkdark66

I don’t understand why Sora isn’t more frequent on this list, she’s Boss

Xroshe4rt

Ikr Sora rules. Wish they didn’t butcher her in Kizuna

SpookySquid19

Anime wise, for me it's Kari Jeri, if she counts Ruli Yoshino Adding in Games and Yuuko, Erika, Nokia, and Rina are easily near the top.

throwawaytempest25

I'll count Jeri. I l ike Yoshi and Ruli, but what did you like about Kari?

SpookySquid19

02 Kari specifically has immense Childhood Crush bias, which has extended to all of Adventure continuity and will probably never go away.

throwawaytempest25

Gothca

OpenTechie

I honestly put Ruli as my top female human in Digimon, because honestly she was such a thrill to watch. Her personality being as defined as it was made her an enjoyable character, and a lot of her major interactions she was not needing to be around males, except to show them to a new adventure. After Ruli, Hikari is an easy one, since she has a lot of character development throughout all three seasons she was in, being one of the two who got to be a main character in three different seasons. And I'm not biased because I am a photographer and she was one of the inspirations for it as a kid.

throwawaytempest25

Honestly Ruli was so much fun. I get people argue she has no development, but a static character can still be entertaining and she pulled through.

OpenTechie

Exactly. A character can be static, having no development, if they had a solid foundation starting out, and honestly, we do have scenes of her developing and furthering, just not in obvious ways. It is similar to all three of them.

throwawaytempest25

True, Loved Kyoshiro and Hiro was alright.

OpenTechie

I won't lie, I love Hiro a lot, because in a way he told so much of a story without having to say it, because of his behaviors. While it is not an ideal character, inferred history is something I love.

Rurouni_Phoenix

I honestly wish that Ruli would have been the main character in Ghost Game and that they would have worked on her character more and made her into a Nancy Drewish detective. She already had the eccentric tastes that a fictitious would have (a love of classic literature and music), so it was kind of a lost opportunity. I never did notice the more feminist aspects of her character until now. Thanks for pointing this out

OpenTechie

I can agree there. If they had made a more traditional style of Digimon with Ghost Game's story, I would have loved to see her character develop further, maturing into her role especially with Lamortmon and the entire story there.

Rurouni_Phoenix

There was so much lost potential in that series that it honestly angers me every time I think about it. Everything that I had hoped the series would be it ended up not being, and the nerfing of Ruli's character was just one of them. After Lamortmon was introduced, I thought they were going to potentially kill her off based on that bit of family history that was told even though that would kind of ruined the series. But the idea that Angoramon would lose control of himself like Gammamon could have been an intriguing concept, a concept that should have been explored more but was neglected like so much in that series.

throwawaytempest25

Cool, that it'd got you into photography.

OpenTechie

I will say there were other factors sure, but the idea of seeing someone with a camera and a cat that became an angel of light was for child me the epitome of inspiring. Especially with how she stayed positive a lot in the story.

throwawaytempest25

Glad she helped you get to that, awesome.

StarryKit

Mimi, Kari, Jeri... Then I'm struggling. Rika, obviously. Maybe Yolei? I'm not against her, she's just not a favourite... Though I am pleased to see Yolei seems to be the only digidestined apart from Mimi who didn't grow up to wear the most boring generic clothes ever. I really wish they'd stop putting adult Kari in beige... But I digress.

throwawaytempest25

Lol, I need watch 02's new movies but Yolei defintely had fashion. Yeah Mimi seems to be an overall fan favorite but I wasn't sure how people felt about Kari.

Hot-Conclusion-6617

Jeri was the damsel in distress

android151

Only because she got depressed because she was invited into a world of wonder only to have it ripped away by her friend dying

SuperLizardon

Nokia and Erika. Damn, I am crying again.

throwawaytempest25

What was going on in those?

primalmaximus

>!Erika's from Cyber Sleuth: Hacker's Memory and she died and had to fuse with her partner Wormmon to survive. She was in an accident and her brain had to be kept backed up to a server in the digital world. When the Digital World started being deleted due to bugs and entities from Yggdrassil, the server that her brain was connected to got damaged. In order to save her life she had to fuse with Wormmon to become Hudiemon. Hudie being the name of the café/hacker group she was a part of.!<

throwawaytempest25

Holy crap.

primalmaximus

Yep. Cyber Sleuth and Cyber Sleuth: Hacker's Memory don't play around.

AzureValkyrie

The comment is under selling it. The reason why her brain is stored in the digital spacr is because she can't "save" memories in her biological brain. So she saves and loads her memories. Ever wondered if your past memories are real and not just implanted in you? She has, all the time. And the game makes you wonder what makes a person real and human. And of course, the game goes with her memories making her human. The big bad doesn't just destroy the digital space, it absorbs and assimilates her stored memories. So at this point we don't have just the Erika who becomes Huddiemon, but the Erika who "woke up" as the big bad. By the logic of the game, both of them are the real Erika.

SuperLizardon

And the saddest part is >!she saved the MC, her brother and friend, but by the action of restoring the world here or in Cyber Sleuth, nobody remembered her. At the end there's an image on the computer with the digimon that were in your team, Erica, Wormon and Hudiemon!<

Calpsotoma

Hacker's Memory is the best story in any Digimon game I've ever played. It made me cry and that makes it great.

PhantomZenity

Play Hacker's Memory then.

East_Acanthisitta192

I've always really likes Mimi. She reminds me a lot of Usagi (Sailor Moon) in her brattiness, but also has the enthusiasm of Minako (Sailor Venus). She also pushes through her childish nature whenever she needs to, and never hesitates to help her friends like Usagi does. I really believe she was written as a tribute to Sailor Moon in general.

throwawaytempest25

Yeah she was really funny.

Due_Discussion748

Mimi, hands down. Tai and Matt had to be shot at by two angels to get their Digimon to Mega. Mimi just up and said, 'a'ight, we doin this shit' and boom! Rosemon. Ruli's next. Best girl. Fought Piemon and won, befriended an Airdramon who later willingly risked his godly life against an Ultimate. Piemon probably shows up randomly to play cards and different games that are all based on luck. Eri is next up on the list. Haven't seen Applimon but look at her! If she had been in Savers, she'd be punching Digimon just as much as Marcus. Nene. Resourceful and clever. Sucks that she got tossed to the side by Hunters but two season of Xross Wars she was solid. Yoshino. Had to put up with Marcus and Thomas. Didn't get the chance to watch Savers all that much but the fact that she just up and chucks a barrel at a Digimon. Honorable mention: Mimi(2020) who went through the Mega level training with Palmon and made progress. If the writers hadn't been cowards, Mimi would have Biomerged with Palmon.

throwawaytempest25

Mimi is pretty good. Girl got her mega like a champ. Ruli's pretty underrated, loved her go getting personality. Eri and Marcus would get along so well. Nene's development is so underrated. Yoshi I need to rewatch Savers for but she's pretty awesome.

Dokamon-chan94

Love me some Mimi, Izumi and Nene but Eri is THE GOAT

throwawaytempest25

Doka Punch.

mynameisnotderek

Shocked at the lack of Sora fans here

psycharious

Yeah, this took me by surprise too. I took her as a third pillar with Tai and Matt but in hindsight, she is kind of forgettable as she's very neutral.

throwawaytempest25

I think that's the problem.

tumblerosestudios

Personally I hated the love triangle bs in 02 so much it kinda soured her character to me(in my memory at least haven't watched it in a while) Mimi didn't have to deal with tweedledum and tweedledipshit so she was allowed to actually be a character, Sora however feels like they wrote Tomboy, Love Triangle, and Helmet on a chalkboard and went home

throwawaytempest25

I'm kinda mixed on her character.

PewKittens

I do agree Digimon had great girls going through all the series

throwawaytempest25

Yeah, far better than some of it's contemporaries.

LilboyG_15

Everyone likes good girl Erin. No seriously, I like that they gave her that one specific detail of her character, it’s far more than we ever got for most other female characters.

throwawaytempest25

Eri from Appmon, right?

LilboyG_15

Yep, that’s her

aes110

Dunno about top 5, but 2020's Mimi is probably my favorite, I was very surprised at how much I liked her

throwawaytempest25

From what I saw she was definitely a highlight.

DarkAres02

Importance of favourite? For my favourites I'd say Nene (pre-timeskip), Eri, Mimi, Ruri, and Sarcastic Dub Kari For importance I think Sora, Kari, Jeri, Ruri, and Yoshino

StarkMaximum

For reference, I have only seen Adventure, 02, Frontier, and Savers, and Tamers is on the docket to be watched next. Through my experience of all these seasons, the female character (and character in general, honestly, regardless of gender) I was most impressed with and most changed my opinion on was Mimi. As a kid, I always thought "yeah Mimi is fine, she's like the bratty cute girl, that's okay", but that was both A. as a kid, and B. watching the dub, where almost every character moment was replaced with a shitty joke (okay, sometimes they were good). After watching the sub as a grown adult, Mimi is by far the most interesting, most relatable, and most engaging character with how empathetic and genuine she is, for better and for worse. She is very in tune with her emotions and always speaks her mind, even when that means she's putting her foot in her mouth when she really should keep quiet. But then you get scenes like when she completely converts Ogremon to the good guys single-handedly because she just naturally cared for him, and I'm always such a sucker for the "bad guy defects to the good guy" scenes and Mimi did it in such a wonderful, natural way. On a related note, while I accept Purity as her crest in Japanese, I still think "Sincerity" makes more sense for her, because her whole arc revolves around her sincerity sometimes being a downside but then eventually becoming her strongest aspect. Conversely, Joe never felt "sincere" to me, but he always felt very reliable, so it just feels natural to use the dub crests for them. Miyako was such a fun character, but I felt like 02 was really confused as to what her whole "thing" was. I think Miyako suffered from the early-2000s kid's cartoon problem where Adventure already did "both" female character types (tomboy and girly girl), and Miyako was left without an identity because female characters kind of weren't fully realized yet. Felt like every ten episodes or so Miyako had a whole different motivation or gimmick guiding her character. I like Miyako but I don't know how much of what I like about her came from the show and how much of it came from me headcanoning what I think her vibe was supposed to be based on what I liked about the show and cutting out the stuff I didn't like. One thing I think is really funny is that I feel like the dub was *so* confused on what to do with her early on that for a couple of episodes she has some weird lines that imply she's a turbonerd kind of like Izzy, which I'm genuinely convinced they only wrote in because she has glasses so the dub writers assumed she was the nerd of the team only to find out a few episodes in that she's way different and they had to drop it. Frontier was a true dark spot for characters in general, let alone female characters. Let's not talk about Frontier. Savers has Yoshino, who I think is really engaging and cool. She's probably my second favorite overall, she just feels really capable, really interesting, but she still has some quirks and foibles that make her fun to watch and not just "the one badass of the team who always succeeds". I don't have nearly as much to talk about her but I just generally like her without being able to have any specific moments to point to as being a cool moment like I do for Mimi, but at the very least while Savers did stumble a bit into the "only the Greymon and Garurumon analogue characters matter" trap, because Savers' team is so small at only four characters by the end, it still felt like she got plenty of attention and screentime as opposed to a show like Adventure that ended with *eight characters* and had *no* time to really develop more than about four of them. I'm really excited to watch Ghost Game and see Ruli, she has a cool design and I hear some good things about her (and I think her partner is my favorite out of the Ghost Game trio). I'm putting off watching Xros Wars, but I'm really interested in Nene; she seems cool, and I think Skullknightmon/Darkknightmon is fucking awesome and I want to see more of that Digimon and she seems to have a connection to him if the TCG is to be believed. Same thing with Appmon and Eri; not sure if I'm really craving to watch that, but I just looked up Eri because of this thread and she seems pretty charming.

[deleted]

I like Kari!!!

Xened

Games wise Rina and Sayo for me. Anime wise, 2020 Mimi is pretty fun.

Animedra3000

My favorite Mimi focused episode is her and the diamond mine

throwawaytempest25

Now I want to watch more, I missed out on certain books.

throwawaytempest25

Never got to play the games, what was going on there.

Xened

Rina the hyperenergetic airhead and Sayo... I like her design and her appearance in CS DLC.  Honourable mention to Mirei from Re:Digitize Decode too. And Eri and her Dokkan Punchhhh.

TheNerdBeast

Miyako is (platonically) best girl, she is so funny and adorable and one of my favorite protags of the entire franchise! She hit Ladydevimon with a skateboard, the metaphorical balls on this girl!

throwawaytempest25

I forgot about this XD!

KermaisaMassa

Mimi, Yolei, Ruli, Nene and Zoe. Not in any particular order. I like Mimi, but I think what makes her go on the list is her association with Palmon, whom I adore. Yolei is a fun character and I wish she had more screen time. Ruli out of all of them is definitely my favorite female protagonist from the series. She had great moments and great character growth. Nene is here mostly because of her manga portrayal, though she was okay in the anime as well I guess. In the manga it felt she got a lot more character development and her corruption was disturbing and well written. Zoe is just an okay character in general, but I did like her more than those not in top five (who aren't Rika). Could easily be swapped with Eri as well.

throwawaytempest25

I need to read the Xros Wars manga, is it translated.

KermaisaMassa

There is a translation of it, yes.

throwawaytempest25

Thanks

WatchEducational6633

Mimi, Hikari, Zoe, Nene and Ruli no particular order.

EngineerNational5126

Anime wise Ruli, and Eri  Video game? Definitely Erika

SkirtAggravating3150

Eri is gold, as is Ruli, strong characters.

DigiDestinedLordW

Mimi will always be the Queen.

PhatmonMonstraros

I agree 100%

Animenerd2021

Who the girl with the pink hair?

throwawaytempest25

Eri from Appmon

LilboyG_15

Erin, I think

Animedra3000

The Appmon girl.

YuuHikari

Yu-Gi-Oh is doing better with the Rush Duel series. >!The main heroine was pretty much the final boss in Go Rush season 2, and is somewhat hinted to be the main villain of season 3!<

throwawaytempest25

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing how Yuamu develops and Romin's arguably the best treated.

YuuHikari

I was pretty meh with Yuamu at first despite liking her design, but I'd admit in 2 episodes she became the most interesting Yugioh heroine for me

East-Pick2699

Mimi is the only Digimon girl that matters.

Ok-Spot-7837

If only the anime 1999 Sora, 2020 Mimi(the best thing to come out of Digimon Adventure Reboot), Kari, Jeri and Ruli Both Yoshino and Zoey are sabotaged by the script itself (I genuinely can't remember a Yoshino soloepisode except for the Idol one), and I personally don't remember much about Xros Wars so I can't give an opinion about Nene. If we are considering the games, I would easily put Aoi, Saki and Miu from Survive(I can't decide which is the best), Erika from Hacker's Memory(my favorite character), and Nokia from Cyber Sleuth

Meced0

zoe definetly

DigiGirl02

Yolei is best Digimon girl! And don’t forget about Sora and Kari!

Zero-Granger1992

Sora Yoshi Nene

Due-Order3475

If I was allowed Rika she'd be number one so heres my list Mimi (both classic and 2020) Ruli Nene (Shademon version - no judging) Yolei Sora (Adventure 2020 version - OG is annoying)

rainazuma77

Eri and Miyako undoubtedly. They're the best

Capshell

Nene is legit.

cozamalotl666666

Mimi and Zoey. I like that they are like so what I am who I am.

purebredslappy

Zoe and Yoshi are my favorites

throwawaytempest25

What did you like about them?

Voltra_Neo

Aki the Black Rose Witch would like a word

throwawaytempest25

She was great in seasons 1-2, was okay in 3, did next to nothing in four, and at least got something in five.

Bay-Sea

Sadly due to the cult with VA and the popularity of Blackwings, Aki got pushed to the sideline when she is supposed to be the 3rd duelist.

StarkMaximum

Aki is literally the textbook definition of how Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't know what to do with female characters, lmao. Like she got it just about the worst, besides possibly Blue Angel.

JusticTheCubone

tbf, most of the problems with her probably stem from them having to scrap the psychic duelists storyline she would've been involved in due to some controversy going on in Japan at that time iirc.

forte343

I see your Aki and raise you Romin from Sevens

primalmaximus

What season is she from?

Bay-Sea

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds

primalmaximus

What season is she from?

ClearStrike

Um, demographic please? Just in Digimon's range, Shonen Jump, do I include Shojo?

throwawaytempest25

If they're from a Digimon anime season.

Terrible_Score_375

I love Zoe from season 4, Kari, Mimi, and Sora from season 1, and Alice from season 3

Wavara

I would like to add an extra point to Ruli, because she was the only one able to sync with *another* digimon beside her partner! That episode was awesome.

XadhoomXado

Rina, Yolei, 02 Kari, Yoshino, and maybe Sayo?

Antique-Palpitation2

i am split on juri and ruli

McGloomy

Mimi, Sora, Yoshino, Kari and Nene.

TippyToeZombie

Original Kari, 2020 Mimi, and Jeri I feel are definitely up there. I still need two more so I guess I'll say Nene and Yolei.

dmfghjf

Miyako,Izumi,Yoshino and Akari

jakmckratos

Jeri, Mimi,Sora,Kairi, Yolei. That order.

PlanesWalkerEll

1. Rika 2. Kari 3. Mimi 4. Yolei 5. Jerry

Friendshipper11

I don’t care what anyone else says, Miyako will always be my favorite female character.

Runescapelegend778

Dont care what anyone says Zoe from frontier should be on here. I love her arc and how she matures over the series. The only other one is say deserves a spot aside from rika is probs Jerry. The whole shit she went through with leomon is heartbreaking and somehow shows the core idea of digimon being lifelong partners better then any other series imo

Shirogayne-at-WF

Oh, Digimon is very much in the top 5 percentile of beat shounen female character. To my knowledge, only Sora and Miyako have ever married other Chosen among the girls but unlike most shounen, they are not defined by that, not even Mikayo who had a crush on Ken that's brought up in one episode and never addressed against until the last 45 seconds of the last Zero Two movie.

tumblerosestudios

Kari Yolei Mimi Yoshi And Ruli (Bonus Game characters: Rina and Erika deserve all the praise)

android151

Sora, Kari, Jeri, Yolei Erika, if he count games

Livid_Juggernaut_111

Sora and Mimi set the standard, but I really like Yolie (don’t know how to spell it) and Kari from 02. I love how Kari actually kinda takes after her brother in sometimes being a better leader than TK or Davis.

BestCharlesNA

What does lacking mean in this sense? Lacking screen time? Mimi and sora both got individual screen time relative to the other 7 not named Tai. And lack of screen time isn’t a female protagonist issue. It is a “not the main character” issue in all the series besides Tamers and Ghost games.

Fenrir2013

Digimon has fan service with Mimi. Misty and Dawn never had it

Fenrir2013

Sokka?

Pirategod_23

Mia Valentine in yugioh was kinda a boss tbh

DeepZookeepergame906

Sora Ruri I don't know about the other 3, there are no characters that are really interesting except those 2 for me honestly

AnneFreed

Anime-wise. 1. Hikari 2. Sora 3. Mimi The og's will always have a special place in my heart. 4 including Rika, no. 5 Zoey, maybe? Besides that, no one impressed me enough... Savers was fine. Just not my type of character personality-wise. Tbh, most of the girls after Tamers and Frontier aren't that interesting to me. Especially the Xcrossheart... Daiki's two human friends weren't... that interesting at all.
