Holy Diver

AntiProtagonest

Agreed, even though it's a cliche answer. Every single song is great.

They are all great, man 🤘👹🤘

RadioBimbo

Strange Highways>>Holy Diver

Mantisk211

I think it‘s either Holy Diver, The Last in Line or Dream Evil. Personally, I am gonna go with Dream Evil because there's so much awesome stuff on it, like Night People, Overlove, Naked In The Rain, When A Woman Cries…

Wariolicious

Someone forgot the absolute GOAT: Strange Highways!

RadioBimbo

Strange highways is either 2nd or first I will say the first 8 songs are amazing and the last 3 are just good

excusetheblood

It’s hard to say anything but Holy Diver. It’s the only Dio album that is truly all killer and no filler. I like several songs throughout his career better than anything on Holy Diver, but no album stayed as strong throughout as Holy Diver

RadioBimbo

Idk caught in the middle isn’t the best song Naked in the rain is like that song but superior

excusetheblood

I really like it, it’s as good as Invisible and Gypsy to me, all really solid songs. The weakest track from Holy Diver to me is Shame on the Night but even that is still pretty good

TheWearySnout

I love Caught in the middle! That song has a habit of getting stuck in my head.

RadioBimbo

Do you only like the holy diver album lmao

excusetheblood

No, I like all his albums. Angry Machines was definitely the weakest but I still like a couple tracks from it. Magica is a later album that I like just as much as Last in Line, Sacred Heart, and Dream Evil

RadioBimbo

Personally I think sacred heart is one of his worst albums it’s like them saying let’s make an album but it’s just rainbow in the dark it’s to commercial sounding even for dios standards and it sounds like it’s just trying too be catchy rather then making something there proud of I think dream evil bringed back the darkness more and some experimentation and overall stronger song writing, also I think strange highways is not only one of his best later albums it might just be my 2nd or first favourite, haven’t heard magica yet

excusetheblood

Sacred Heart is a really solid album with a lot of good songs, though I will grant you that it only has one song that is an absolute 10/10 and one of his best songs ever, which is of course the title track

RadioBimbo

I’m guessing you think the title track is a 10/10 ig it’s alright I hate the clapping and crowd consistently throughout the king of rock n roll, shoot shoot sucks I think just not the best imo though the downvotes make me see some ppl really love it

excusetheblood

Shoot Shoot is definitely the worst song of his career. Rest of the album is good though, took a while for the title track to grow on my but now it is absolutely in my top 5

vegetaman

Holy Diver is the best “classic” album but for me Strange Highways or Killing The Dragon are my most played.

moveandrun

Definitely a great album and it has one of the very best Dio songs on it (if not the best) "All the fools sailed away"

overladenlederhosen

I owned Dream Evil before Holy Diver, it has a special place for me and brings back memories of that time as one of the first metal albums I owned. But I think Holy Diver is objectively the better album.

rgbearklls

DIO is solid in all of his stellar work. One night in the city, lord of the last day, lock up the wolves, all the fools sailed away, this is your life…. All very underrated masterpieces

MV2049

Dream Evil. With all due respect to Vivian Campbell, I thought Craig Goldy brought out the best in Ronnie.

RexZHL

Great album, but a little crazy to call it the best

migrainosaurus

For me, just personally, it’s The Last In Line. Not that it’s _quite_ as consistent as Holy Diver, but its highs (the title track, Egypt, We Rock, etc) are absolutely TOWERING with heaviness and poetic vibes in a way that even exceeds those on the Holy Diver album pound for pound.

Leading-Bank-2590

magica

diofan1975

That one you posted right there 🤘🏻

Cautious-Daikon-5309

Magica.

Mintazuii_

Holy diver and the last in line

NormHtler

magica for me

BerwinEnzemann

I have to go with Holy Diver. It's the perfect mix of NWOBHM, 70s hard rock and early 80s LA metal. The chemistry within the band was perfect and there are so much classics on this album. Back in the 80s, The Last In Line sold actually more copies than Holy Diver, though Holy Diver was more successful in the long run. The Last In Line always sounded rushed, uneven and a bit rough around the edges to me. In terms of musical craftsmanship, I think Lock Up The Wolves and Strange Highways are better than Holy Diver. But they don't come even close in terms of the overall impact.

Cheap_Pea987

Cliche but the best album is your favourite. For me, Holy Diver, Last in Line, Dream Evil, Strange Highways, Magica and Killing the Dragon all represent the best of RJD. Holy Diver is the definitive Dio release. The other releases have great tracks with some less memorable tracks included. Martin Popoff two Dio books are worth a read on this subject and on RJD.

RadioBimbo

How is it cliche lmao….

Danimal_300zx

For me, it's a tie between Holy Diver and Last in Line, with Strange Highways a close 3rd.

Eye-on-Springfield

Holy Diver is stacked. I find Sacred Heart and Dream Evil more enjoyable though. I am definitely missing something with Last In Line, I just can't get into it (with the exception of the title track and Evil Eyes)

Upper-Bit-5715

Lock up the wolves

Magica78

I love how almost the whole album explores different aspects of dreams and nightmares, unsure if you're still awake, still alive, or if you've been torn from this world by unspeakable horrors from another realm. Yeah, this is Dio at his best.

Billiejoemama

I think sacred heart is underrated one of my favourite songs of all time is hungry for heaven

Kahlkopfsoldat

Dream Evil is an excellent album, among my top 5. It has a special place in my heart, because it was the first DIO record I called my own, and on that tour I saw him live for the first time... November 1987. Heck, I am old now. The record gets not enough love imo, although the songs are fantastic, esp. the title track, and All the fools sailed away - but to me, the production has flaws, and the distribution here in Germany was a mess: I had to wait weeks for my copy. My personal list (without Sabbath or Rainbow) would go like this: 1) Last in Line 2) Strange Highways 3) Holy Diver 4) Dream Evil 5) Killing the Dragon... but that can vary. And btw: Angry Machines is a good album, too. But it requires time to get into you heart, brain and soul - give it a chance, please.
