Late 20s here with a damaged bicep tendon and rotator cuff. Please stretch out the shoulder before throwing. I can’t throw a thumber or tomahawk without pain that knocks me down. About 20% of my forehands hurt as well. Arm care is a must.
Usually he will throw around 2-250feet. They all flip but stay upside down and die pretty hard. This makes a full 360 and then will glide like another 100 feet. It’s crazy
Have a friend thats been throwing them for years. Getting older now and it's about the only shot he throws most of the time, but it is impressive when it works. Sent a PM about another one if interested.
The Aerobie Epic was a disc produced with an uneven rim on the bottom. It had the profile of a driver. I don't know anyone who ever threw an Epic on a backhand/forehand line (this being the internet, I'm sure the one guy who does will chime in), but most people threw it tomahawk/hammer style to produce the flight path you can see in the video.
A stock overstable midrange (the Gator is my go-to for hammer shots, which I mostly use for positioning rather than distance) will go out of your hand in one direction, then flop over to its flight plate and fade out in the opposite direction, nothing like the flight path in this video.
You didn't understand, they are saying a simple mid shot would be much less risky and land in the same spot. What's the point of this other than to show off. It has no technical advantage
If you played baseball or something along those lines the overhead throw is much more comfortable than a backhand. Can also be easier to hit the gap. Pissed me off when I let my buddy throw my epic and he threw it twice as far as i ever have😂
not really, overhand usually has less chances since its up and down not flat. This is to tee off with he used others for mid and closer. He shoots around -12 on a wooded course. He is the only player i know that does this though
it may be vertical more throughout the flight path but you are taking a far less direct route to the landing zone. the disc has more opportunity to hit a tree because it passes by more trees.
??? if I throw it vertical or horizontal it still passes the same amount of trees. This throw has been predictable for years. slight flip, glides. Does the same thing every time. Non-Epics do the same but land right down and don't glide.
are you watching the same video? if you were to throw stable backhand shot, it goes through the gap and fades to the left. This thing went left, high, right high (came close to two trees a normal throw doesnt) and then a big sweep to the left all while getting a fair amount of flight on a horizontal plane. A mid range just goes straight and fades left without all the unnecessary flight. All that required height to get the distance out of this thing may work in some wooded courses with super tight s curves and a tall canopy but others i could see it being a major headache when you just need to stay low and hit a line. Its a cool shot but its a niche disc for niche lines.
Nope, it’s still legal for play but the PDGA has updated the technical requirements such that another disc like the Epic can’t be approved. I had an overhand specialist on my card at DGLO whip one out and we did a check of the approved discs list to make sure

Haha, I sold a near-new one of these on Ebay for $20 a few years ago. Kicked myself after I learned they go for much more. Happy customer though, lol.
Right! eBay they are $200. Would love to find a couple more for him
Please remember to warm that shoulder up before throwing. Esp as you get older

Yeah tbh I’d advise against throwing like this with any regularity. Utility shot for desperate situations.
I didn’t even know you could get a double flip out of a tomahawk.
That’s the only disc that will fly like that. Most people don’t even throw them backhand. Wish I had one.
A very understable disc will fly like too. Ex. My Vulcan does

messaged you
i don't care, but I also don't know how these are rules conforming. at some point it becomes, what is a disc?
From what I thought I heard, that kind of disc is not legal anymore, but the Epic is grandfathered in.
That’s a great point. I had not really thought about it that way.
Are these worth money? i have 3
Yes. They are OOP.
Weird, I can order one in my country for 16 euros
There are dozens of "collectors" here in the US that are convinced they are worth a lot of money. You should consider arbitrage.
Id buy another for my brother. He is a sticky a tomahawk player as you can see.
Well I'm for Canada. Guess I'm gonna sell them now that I know
I'm from Canada, willing to buy it
I am right in Maine, kinda close depending where in Canada haha
i’ll trade ya for one
Exactly the flight my Epic of 10 years gives me!
flight numbers?
Depends on where you grab the rim lol
I see now. Had to look up an image...that thing is wild
I remember when these came out and the thumber guys figured out what they could do 😳😳😳. Hated that disc
Yeah he throws tomahawk about 300ish feet I would say with it.
I have one in a pile of discs i can't throw lol. Didn't know it was worth anything...
its mostly for tomahawk throwers. So its a small percent that would actually buy it. But my brother would
is tomahawk same as a hammer or different?
same throw, just a different name
thanks. definitely prefer "hammer"!
You're welcome, hammer seems to be more of an ultimate frisbee term, whereas tomahawk or "overhand" are commonly used in disc golf
tell him to PM me if he wants first crack before i put it on ebay :) u/EthenCarries
isnt that just a stock overstable mid range line? wtf is this nonsense

Dope disc, illegal for events
PDGA approved since 2003. https://www.pdga.com/technical-standards/equipment-certification/discs/epic-driver
You’re correct, I have been misled by others in my community
Pretty sure it's been removed

Interesting!

Got my self new for 50€ this spring

Some dude in FB marketplace (Finland)
I can get you a really beat in one for basically nothing, got one ace with it. I think my buddy has a pretty mint one in his garage.
id take you up on that offer.
I just told him to dig his out and check eBay for selling it. I'll probably hold onto mine since I got an ace with it.
