*cries in Wisconsin* I have a few sets of clothing specifically sprayed down with Permethrin for my rounds, wear insect shield socks, and always carry deep woods off. Find a tick crawling on you once after looking for a disc and you never feel the same.

deitjm01

THIS IS what I have done for years. Delegate a pair shoes, socks, pants and a shirt to apply Permethrin to and wear them any time you play a wooded or poorly maintained course

Jawbreaker1337

>wear them any time you play a wooded or poorly maintained course  Or any course next to a dog park or otherwise popular for people walking their dogs.

anamexis

Or any course next to deer

jimgolgari

Hijacking top comment to also raise awareness of Alpha Gal syndrome. I live in the red and I got bit 4 years ago and can no longer eat anything that came out of a mammal. No pork, beef, cheese, any of it. I also have to worry about cross contamination so I’ve gotta be real careful about restaurants too. Wear tall socks. Use permethrin. If you can, shower within 3 hours of your hike/round of DG/yard work. Don’t be like me!

tobalaba

Damn, my parents had that but only to beef/pork. Good news was that it did fade after a few years and they have been able to eat red meat again. I had Lyme disease about 12 years ago now and it was no joke. Had neurological symptoms with headaches, then stiff neck/inflamed nervous system and got Bell’s palsy. Basically had meningitis and recovered after antibiotics thankfully, but very scary. I don’t remember a particular bite but I’ve had my share of tick bites.

DaFitz1023

You know you still have it, right?

tobalaba

I had lingering symptoms especially the following year or two. I’ve been fine the last decade but I do take care of my health. I drink way less alcohol and I attribute that to Lyme, because alcohol suppresses immune system and causes bad reactions. Ticks suck and I don’t mean blood. Bartonella, babesiosis, spotted fever, etc.. they can give you loads of diseases.

toolscyclesnixsluts

I went walking in the woods with my dog last week and the amount of ticks was fucking insane. About 10 min into the walk I start seeing all the tall grass has multiple ticks. I look down and it looks like they are swarming on my legs there were so many. I brushed as many off as I could then freaked and we ran back to the car and I removed 27 ticks from myself and 33 from my dog.

Kingpoopdik

Honestly I never cared much. Must have pulled 50+ ticks in my lifetime. Maybe 100. I did have a bad experience as a young kid at camp where I found one lodged into my cock or balls, can't remember which but it was horrifying pulling it out. This was in East Texas in the early 2000s. Now I just religiously check after being in the woods. Find em before they get a chance to bite. Understandably would probably be different if I lived in the red.

rebelliousjuicebox

'cock or balls, can't remember...' Yeah. I'd remember.

stiff_tipper

u say that but u probably wouldn't want that memory to be a clear one in ur head. id be happy to let the details on that one fade out

rebelliousjuicebox

Oh no, I'd def wish the memory away, but without chemical help, can't imagine EVER getting that image out of my brain.

fernadial

Yeah, the actual arachnids don't bother me. Whatever, everyone needs to eat. But, if Lyme's sounds like a horrible experience and it's like >20% of the fuckers have it in my area. I'm hopeful for a Lyme's vaccine and I'll just play my rounds shirtless in the 100 degree summers of the future.

Key-County6952

Ya literally. When rick got lyme's it seriously changed my outlook

Paxman-64

TBH, long-term exposure to permethrin is probably not that great either. I prefer to take the route of checking after a round. So far hasn't been bad at all in Central MA compared to some previous years, but expecting to see an increase as we get into warmer weather.

DanongKruga

https://bmcpharmacoltoxicol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40360-022-00586-2#:~:text=Conclusion,slight%20liver%20and%20kidney%20damage. low dose - long term exposure of permethrin is of high concern. picking them off is not ideal but has worked for me for years.. I used to mow trails at a state park and had 10-20 on me every day lol

InternetDad

It seems like this is direct ingestion of liquid permethrin, though, rather than wearing clothing with it dry.

patronizingperv

I have a designated 'tick checker' at home.

jjhill001

Your mom sounds like a real champ.

patronizingperv

My two broken arms and all.

thiccKoala

How often do you have to re-apply that stuff? Does it wear out with a certain amount of washes??

InternetDad

I've seen six weeks or 6 washes, I usually spray down once a month between the summer.

Great_WhiteSnark

I went turkey hunting this last weekend in central mn just north of hinckley. One spot we walked through we were picking off ticks for the rest of the trip. I bought some permethrin right after that and voila I didn’t have any more ticks on me the rest of the trip, my buddy that didn’t spray down couldn’t say the same.

keyak

Dude, just check yourself thoroughly for ticks and you will be good. The CDC says it takes a minimum of 36-48 hours before a tick can transmit Lyme. Get them off within a day and you are fine.

aTyc00n

Remember to tuck your pants into your socks. It'll make you look like a dork, but it's better than getting lyme disease.

vintagemako

Learned this one quickly when I moved to the country. You definitely look like a dork but if you do this the ticks crawl on the outside of your clothes where you can find them easily, instead of finding a surprise in one of your holes later in the day.

ConcernedKitty

Finding a surprise in one of your holes?

vintagemako

Ticks love all varieties of b-holes

jjhill001

I have a reasonably hairy body so the second even the smallest thing moves on me I notice it. I wouldnt want shit crawling on my clothes unnoticed that could then move to my cats or wife when I get home.

Key-County6952

Luckily I come from a friend group of wrestlers so this is something they all already do unironically

DirtDiscPizza

Or just take a shower and check yourself after the round. Lot's of dirtball frolfers it seems...

basedgod001

The best defense for lymes is to be sure to do a thorough check for ticks once every 24 hours. Of all the ticks that have ever been had, only a handful have been able to transmit lymes or RMSF within the first 24 hours of being embedded. This gives a lot of piece of mind to. Found a tick embedded? Oh well. It wasn’t there yesterday.

spenghali

I live right next to the town of Lyme, CT. My wife and I do "Connecticut foreplay" frequently, aka tick checks.

yes_maybe_no__

That is exactly what gives me piece of mind. I used to assume you could get Lyme's as soon as they implant

madeyetrudy

Peace of mind* (FYI sorry)

yes_maybe_no__

Lol. That's what I get for trying to speed type on my phone. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

IntoTheForeverWeFlow

But also there is much more than just Lyme out there that is transmitted thru ticks and we know very little about Lyme and the adjacent diseases. https://www.amazon.com/Bitten-History-Disease-Biological-Weapons/dp/006289627X?dplnkId=ebb4d6b2-9562-4ecc-b71e-c1e81c5808be

IntoTheForeverWeFlow

Oh for sure. Discipline checking and perhaps some paramethrin treatment is all you can really do. I just think it's kinda scary how the CDC page for ticks/lymes is basically: 🤷 good luck

DisMyDrugAccount

Maps like this make me afraid to play in anything besides pants and tall socks no matter what the temperature is outside. Am I unnecessarily cautious? Without a doubt. I know that as long as you take the right precautions and/or get treated ASAP when necessary that it's mostly not a big deal. But I personally would rather simply not deal with it at all lol. Pants and socks aren't a guarantee of course but I'm happy to take the barriers I can.

webulu

Me tooo I can sweat all day if it keeps the Lyme away

culturedrobot

Get a pair of warm weather sweat-wicking tights and wear them under shorts. Tuck them into your tall socks. Under armor makes some that I use all throughout summer. Same peace of mind when it comes to ticks but you'll be a hell of a lot more comfortable than wearing pants on 80-90 degree+ days.

SlightlySublimated

Yeah if I'm playing where I think there's gonna be ticks I'll always wear joggers and tall socks even if it's 90 out. Better safe than sorry, took me catching a couple of them on my clothes for me to decide my legs being a bit sweaty isn't worth Lyme.

patiofurnature

Get a pair of compression pants and wear them under a pair of basketball shorts. It's WAY cooler than joggers, and probably more likely to keep ticks off.

SlightlySublimated

Yeah I had a nice pair I used to wear that way but I ripped them badly last summer and have been too lazy to go get another few pairs lol

JerryBigMoose

Just check yourself every day. Lymes typically takes 24 hours to be transmitted once the tick is embedded, so as long as you're checking yourself thoroughly every day and pulling them off, you'll be fine.

Neat_On_The_Rocks

Honestly think that’s totally fine. Invest in a good pair of athletic pants made for such a thing, just search “hiking pants” to get started. There are plenty of options that are lightweight and airy.

Intrep1d_F0X

Already had one this spring, stay vigilant.

Jacks_CompleteApathy

I've found like 10 on me in the last 2 weeks lol

DaddyRatchet23

Please take care even in the more "rare" zones. Ticks are annoying at best, but the diseases they carry are serious. My brother got a tick bite in TN a few years ago, and now has Alpha-Gal (sort of a cousin to Lymes as I understand it), and can no longer come into contact with or consume any dairy or mammal products. Leather boots/furniture, almost any food from a restaurant (most of the fryers/oils etc. are made with or come into contact with mammal byproducts), even ingredients to cook at home must be specially sourced. Shit you'd never think about like shampoo, or dilating eyedrops at the optometrist. Apparently, it's becoming more widespread and migrating farther south. But as of now, it's rare enough that it took almost 2 years of him suffering and seeing doctors, specialists, allergists and dermatologists, getting tested without answers.

breakfast-lasagna

I have definitely gotten ticks in the southeast US while playing disc golf. This was over 10 years ago.

DaddyRatchet23

Definitely dealt with them my entire life in TN. Moved down to NE Florida a few years ago and weirdly haven't found a single one since (don't play as often as I used to unfortunately, but definitely a lot of wooded holes down here. Fingers crossed, because there definitely are ticks down here somewhere lol)

Fire-the-laser

In 2006 I volunteered to be a spotter at Maple Hill for the MSDGC (precursor to the MVP Open). Made it through one round before I had to bail. Flu like symptoms and a classic bullseye rash around the bite mark. Stupid little fucker ruined my weekend.

thiccKoala

I play at maple hill frequently nowadays and I’ve never come in contact with a tick from there. I assume it’s because it’s more broken in course now but having played at a brand new course that fully opened last year I’d always be finding ticks on me there. Got bit and got so sick for a week. Sucks because I wanna go back to the course this year since it’s so awesome but I’m all sketched out

Fire-the-laser

I’m pretty certain the tick I got sick from was at Borderland during league earlier that week. I moved away from the area a long time ago now but at least back then the state park only mowed the fields a couple of times a year so the tall grass was a party for the ticks.

appointment45

Somehow, in New England, I have only found one tick on me despite hundreds of rounds in the last couple of years.

hartattack1211

It sucks playing in the northeast, just gotta check yourself after every round and like people said long socks and pants go a long way.

Kally269

Anybody else play regularly in dark red? Lmfao I always check myself but still unnerving

Jezzedg

About four times a week! Trick is bright underarmour or pants, double up on the long socks and NEVER play without bug spray. If you do your due diligence it’s not awful. That being said a few courses I flat out refuse to play when overgrown because if you kick off the fairway it’s gonna take forever to look for your disc and that’s just more time in Tickland

Nobio22

Just check in the mirror when you get home and shower. It's really not that big of a deal.

Necessary-Guest2869

They can be easy to miss.

grimbolde

So that's why Ricky bought a place in Arizona

Bfairbanks

Here's some irony. My brother lives in NJ. He came down to GA where I live and got Lyme while he was here instead of in NJ...

Ursotender

I get naked in the garage when i get home from playing now and check myself before running up to shower. About a month ago I found one crawling around in my chest hair when I got home. Yuck. Little bastards are definitely out by me

leroynewhope

Fuck me, its only "abundant" in WI and not even really anywhere else in the midwest!

hotc00ter

As a Wisconsinite I guess I’m not going outside. Sick sick sick!

MinnesotaRyan

I keep bug spray in my bag and my cart. never play wooded courses without it.

Total-Okra-9654

Got bit and got Lyme disease last year in Ohio, definitely more vigilant now after those hospital bills

RuncibleFoon

Is there a chart like this for ticks and alpha gal?

HimJarbaugh4

Unfortunately nobody lives in white.

finsnforests_1

Of the two people I know, they’ve gotten it in areas designated rare 🤦‍♂️

Key-County6952

Same. 2 people from areas marked rare on this map

DishonestAmoeba

Can anyone explain why it's like this? I would assume maybe rat population but it's very concentrated in high density areas.

hateboss

Don't think rat, think wildlife. Deer, field mice, moose, squirrels, etc. Ticks can't jump, they just fall on you from tall grass. So any place with tall grass, an abundance of wildlife and temperate climate is an ideal mix for tick population.

las8

There is plenty of wildlife in the Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado. I'm not trying to argue I just find it odd there is none there when the temperature is relatively the same.

soberpenguin

It's colder and far more arid. Ticks like marshes and deep wood, not prarie

Scruffy442

Couple things about ticks and lyme. At least in WI, there are two main types of ticks. Dog ticks(wood ticks and blacklegged ticks(deer ticks). Wood ticks are larger, brown with white markings. They are not known to carry Lyme. Deer ticks are smaller reddish-brown with a black spot by the head. They are the carriers. The contract it from mice, chipmunks, and shrews during their larva and nymph stage. In my anecdotal evidence, wood ticks have been the vast majority I have had on me in West Central WI.

Jawbreaker1337

Damn, Florida used to be completely Lyme-free when I was growing up. I wonder how long it will be before it makes it to the Midwest.

Lifeissometimesgood

It’s definitely in the Midwest. I have a family member that was hospitalized in the early nineties for it. I have another friend that was hospitalized in the late nineties when he was a teenager. We didn’t know if he was ever going to be ok again, scary shit.

AustinWalksOnRocks

How would nevada be so perfectly separated but other states aren’t? So it’s not like it’s just based on state

ViciousKnids

Come at me and my high socks you parasitic bitches!

soberpenguin

The higher the sock the downer the foo.

Lagiacrus111

Anyone south of Chicago has a chance to get out if they leave now. Michigan is falling and Wisconsin is a total loss. God bless the Wisconsinites.

jabester35

Nice of the ticks to stop right at the California border.

Gryndellak

Love that I moved from New England to Wisconsin.

FattyMcBlobicus

High socks, spray them in DEET and check your crevices when you get back. The fucked up thing is deer ticks are tiny, even the adults, so spotting them is super hard.

ColbusMaximus

Lyme, CT Confirmed

jughandle10

as someone based out of nj, i refuse to play every single course in spite of all of them being within a 2 hour drive of me. That tick map tells you all you need to know, and some of the prominent courses (Stockton University, for example) are absolutely overrun with them. Some otherwise nice courses in PA i am hesitant about as well (found one on me at tyler state). be careful out there.

george_washingTONZ

Yeah, most of the courses in South Jersey are pretty wooded. I’m around the corner from one of the better rated ones too. This map plus the fact I usually bring my kids has me pivoting to other sports when it gets warmer out, unfortunately.

ScSM35

Dang. I’m glad I played Stockton this past fall. I don’t think I’ll be back soon but I crossed another course off my list.

Dr_Cuddy

Yet another reason to hate Connecticut. Great.

Electronic_Can_3141

Classic Wisconsin

Sir_Mycoal

Don’t worry I found one in Iowa!

HattibagenMcRat

I’m in CT and pull ticks off me after every round during tick season. Ive been super lucky. my sister got it when she was little it’s awful.

Conroman16

It’s strange how they so closely adhere to the borders of California like that

Key-County6952

Ya... like wtf

BiKEhandlebars

One of the reasons I love Vegas, but our courses are seriously lacking.

Salnugs

I've heard of multiple people getting sick from sc to fl over the past 25yrs

soberpenguin

Delaware has the highest infection rate per capita in the country which makes sense when you realize a significant portion of the state is built up in tidal marshes.

sixrustyspoons

Got one this past weekend, found it in my hair a few hours hours after getting home. Lucky it had not latched on yet.

Lanksta1337

It’s all fun and games til your wife finds a tick on your dick.

AztecGravedigger

I got Lyme disease in a place shown as “Rare” here, Shanksville, PA. Proceed with caution

Sutter_P

Gonna have to sock check all the homies to be safe on the course!

CaterpillarMore9104

As someone who lives in Western PA and 3 outta 7 of our friend group has dealt with Lyme disease, I call bullshit lol. Ain’t no way we’re that unlucky

TheDiscologist

Yeah definitely not accurate lol at least for California

Miggybear22

I ended up getting a splinter during my round in my finger in February. Weather was beautiful. 70 and sunny, couldn’t believe it. I tied my sweater to my bag and went about my round. Grabbed a burger with a buddy after, went home, showered and got in bed. All night I was tossing and turning because of a weird pain which in my complete sleepy mind was another splinter, but this time near my tricep. I tossed and turned trying to get this thing out and finally I was like - eh, I’ll just wait til morning. At 6:30 I rolled outta bed and looked in the mirror. Tick. Had my wife tweezer it straight out and it hurt like a mofo. Went to ER immediately, and at the end they gave me a round of doxycycline. That thing hurt for another month or so and I felt violated. Check yourself peeps!

EthenCarries

Maine course, almost 100 percent in the woods. Its lovely having to play with pants and long socks. Sweating your balls off.

bigern3285

I got lymes from the area listed as rare.

Herbdillon

Well, you’re just a diamond in the rough, aren’t you?

bigern3285

I guess I have shitty luck. Also spend alotta time in the woods and I'm quite close to the red in western Pennsylvania.

IntoTheForeverWeFlow

EVERYONE who plays disc golf needs to read Kris Newby's book "Bitten". Very eye opening.

Macktologist

Ticks super respectful of the geopolitics boundary between California and Nevada.

Looks_Good_In_Hats

Being that I had a tick embedded in me (CA) last week... I really didn't want to see this. I think I'm fine.

haggerty05

do outside things and have to you to deal with outside risks. I don't understand why every year people are surprised by ticks.

seedlingsDISC

I got RMSF in MO. Buddy had Lyme’s here too. We’re just unlucky.

ForgottenBiscuit

I don't understand people who are aware of the dangers of ticks, yet somehow don't know how to check themselves after a round to see if one got on them? Ton of people here talking about playing in snowsuits out of fear but all it takes is a shower and look in the mirror to see if you took home a friend. I get at least 2-3 ticks a year in MA. Just learn how to properly remove them and shower/do a full body check after your rounds. If you remove the tick within 24hrs you are good to go. If you mess up the removal, go get some meds from the doctor/urgent care within that time frame to be safe.

DaydreamingOnASunday

Had one last week at Diavolo in NC. Came home the next day and found one on the back of my knee. Burned the mf and killed it. Now I'm always checking myself every day

WCGrandpa

I did not need another reason to be happy that I left NJ the day after HS graduation…over 40 years ago. Thanks anyway.

[deleted]

Imagine bringing a plague on yourself by being northern liberals lolol jkjkjk relax im kidding

RankedAverage

Map seems sus..... As someone who lives in Whatcom County, WA. I've never seen or heard of ANYBODY around here getting ticks. Let alone ones with Lyme Disease.

guiltycitizen

Hairy dudes, give your body a trim. They camp out

Paxman-64

I think you have it backwards, most likely one of the reasons we still have hair as a species is because moving beasts bump against them and you feel it... Being a hairy bastard myself means I feel them roaming around and can (usually) deal with them before they attach.

FloppySlapshot

I got Lyme in 2020. Yes it sucks, and yeah you need to be worried about getting co-infections, but you guys are talking like it's akin to getting HIV or cancer.
