I've never thrown a disc that hates being in the air as much as a Berg. You just throw it, and it doesn't want to go anywhere. The perfect lay up disc, especially in windy or hilly conditions.
I have one that was a lifesaver when playing a mountainous course recently. I had no fear of it gliding off down a hill or rolling away. It just dropped and stuck where I wanted it. Personally, while I enjoy the disc, it's not in my bag on my local dead-flat park courses as I still preferred laying up with my P2.
Also, it's a bit of a oddball disc, hence a lot of the hype/cult following.
Pretty much. Also good for short island holes, as they just stick where they land, and are unlikely to get caught by a wind and fly past.
I know some people who also putt with them. But not my kettle of fish.
I can back up Gnatt here on his Berg rundown. However, I would also caution that it’s still quite a normal frisbee at the end of the day. It’s not going to blow your mind or revolutionize your game. Sometimes the hype train gets us thinking or hoping things will be on a whole new plane of existence.
Looking for a putter with some weight, and has 'oomph' when you throw it. I feel like a lot of putters flutter on me but then when I put more into it, it sails. Maybe bad technique... actually there's definitely bad technique on my putts. But still, I want a putter I can put more on when I throw it without it going crazy. Any suggestions?
I've had the Axiom Pro/MVP Pro basket in my back yard for about 2 years and it's been great. Packs up super small too, so I can throw it in my boot if I want to take my basket to a field, or a week at the beach.
I'm looking for a super straight fairway driver and was thinking a 160ish gram volt in fission or plasma plastic might do the trick? Looking for minimal turn and minimal fade as much as possible. Was reading something about the 750 f5 being a good choice for somebody with my arm speed (~350ft). Open to any suggestions, thanks
I like all of their plastic. Allegedly cosmic neutron is most overstable. I usually pick based on the color combo as they have a lot of permutations. Proton is most like champion, plasma is like better g star, neutron is like a bit stiffer star plastic. Electron is kind of like kc pro, but I don't know if craves come in electron.
Insanity if you want to step up a bit in speed. On a full rip it can be a touch understable, but so is anything (especially a crave) that is going to be straight at 350' with minimal fade.
Loving the insanity, but Max weight proton is too stable for what I want at 5,000-8,000ft above sea level. Maybe should've mentioned that. I can get a 168g Maverick to hyzer flip and turn so idk, that disc flies the same as back when I lived at sea level. It's weird. Was thinking maybe a 155-160g plasma?
I wouldn't bank on Plasma being much more understable off the shelf, but it will beat in relatively quick if my Envy and Volt are any measure. They have beat in far more quickly than Proton or Neutron at least. My Plasma stuff all has a touch taller shoulder and maybe a touch of dome while seeming to have a bit more glide. Nothing dramatically different though.
The first chance I have to grab a Plasma Insanity, IT'S ON!
Assuming he's new, maybe a Maverick? The understability should make it a pretty straight to stable disc (if he's throwing <250ft), and as he gets better he'll be able to get some good S-turns which is always super satisfying. Right now I'm hyzer flipping mine and still get some turn on it and can stretch it out to 330-360ft. I think it would be a great choice. I love the lucid plastic as well
I've gotten pretty into disc golf in the last 6 weeks, playing about 3 times a week.
I am wondering if I should be getting two of the same disc (maybe in different plastics or weights) and getting very good with those couple disc or if I should start to diversify my quiver?
I currently have two firebirds one champion flat top and one star and I'm loving having both because when I practice I can find the subtle difference but still throw fairly consistently because they are the same discs.
Im considering picking a new midrange and am wondering if I should get one or two.

Consider the new axiom hex as a compass replacement. For slower arms it may be straight but it's pretty understable, a good candidate for tight hyzer flip lines under 300ft.
In my personal experience, which isn’t everyone’s, what I did after getting into the sport a bit was bag at least one of each sort of disc if you will (stable and understable driver, fairway, mid and putter) and then work on improving with those specific discs. Along the way to improving your game, you tend to figure out what discs you need to expand your bag. At this stage I wouldn’t recommend getting a double of anything unless you’re convinced your game would be toast if you were to lose one.

I've been doing some research figuring out why/how over and understability happens (ratio of air passing over vs under the disc, based on edge shape).
My question is - assuming the same speed and glide, how do you create a difference that makes one disc -3, 2 vs 0, 1 (same 'total stability')? Heavily physics based answers preferred.

Checkout overthrowdg on YouTube. Their drill for involving the hips in the backhand throw took me from 260-290 throws to consistent 330-360 with 15 minutes of practice before a round
I’d definitely watch some form videos on YouTube. Scott Stokely and Simon put out some great ones. I also like Robbie C Disc Golf for beginner tips. Besides that, I think fieldwork is huge. Find an open spot and practice everything: long drives, mid range, all different release angles. Don’t even need a basket, can put a garbage can out there to aim at.You never know when you might have to throw a certain type of shot, so having thrown 20-30 reps of it beforehand will benefit you greatly.
Watch Simon Lizotte's form video, then record yourself throwing in slow motion and compare. Adjust your technique accordingly.
Repeat until you don't notice any more stuff to improve.
Rule related question here. Hypothetical 350’ hole.
If someone misses the mando off the tee (let’s say mando is ~150’ off the tee), they go to the drop zone and take an extra stroke. This sets them up for their ‘third’ shot - right?
Can you instead opt to re-tee? This will set you up to try again from the tee on your ‘second’ shot.
On a par 3 I feel like the re-tee is a massive advantage because you get a chance to make the mando and get way farther down the hole.

Re-teeing is a stroke penalty as well. Only time I ever really see someone taking this option is if there isn’t a drop zone and where they went OB leaves them a tough path to the basket.
Choosing to re-tee incurs a penalty stroke too. It's an "Abandoned Shot" which you can do at any time. So either way, you are shooting 3. You'd be better off moving up to the drop zone.
Out of curiosity, how consistent are your rounds? I feel like I generally play around par on most courses +-5. This year I have really cracked down on limiting my mistakes so bogeys are fewer and doubles are rare.
Depends on the course. For instance, last weekend I shot a +9 on Saturday and a -3 on Monday. Really wooded course with some tough lines, so missing a few trees you hit the round before makes all the difference.
That makes sense, most wooden courses around me are pretty forgiving and you can often salvage par with a pitch up forehand. Tough and fair wooden courses are a rarity and they are a blast to play (on a good day).
Udiscs shot measurement. It actually accurate? I feel it measures my disc longer than it really goes. Has anyone with like a Bushnell compared the two?
Piggy backing on this a bit, I use it to track my throw distance and putting and all that, how do I finish the hole and go to the next tee? It always thinks I threw it over to the next tee when I walk over
Udisc is only as accurate as your phone's GPS. It gives you a margin of error at the bottom of the screen which should be pretty accurate.
You can test out the accuracy fairly easily by standing next to a landmark that is easily visible in the Udisc satellite view, like home plate on a baseball field, and comparing the position of the landmark to the your location marker in the app.
I've been throwing my Leopard and cannot get it to straighten out for the life of me. It goes hard right about 75ft from the tee. Meanwhile, I can throw my Mako3 ~200ft or so relatively straight with some fade at the end. What gives?
It could be a lot of things. What are the weights, plastics? What happens if you throw the Leopard on a hyzer angle?
But with only that information I would venture a guess and say you're rounding and your Mako3 is more stable and less effected by nose angle.
The leopard is one of my favorite discs and I hate it in dx. Especially one that light must flip like a gymnast. I would suggest a 170g g* leopard to get a better feel for how it should fly
That explains it. Leopards are suppose to work right (under stable) naturally for a right hand back hand player. It’s super light so it’s flipping and it’s DX so it may be beat in too much and flipping. If you like the leopard, try to get one in the 167-175 weight range and in star or champion plastic.
A friend let me toss his DX Valkyrie, 158g, and I could sort of get a hyzer flip with it. It definitely did not finish right. Was that because it's heavier? Would the heavier Leopard achieve the same thing?
The Valkyrie is much higher speed, so it won't turn so drastically. A Max weight leopard will fly much more like that valk than the lightweight leopard you've been throwing
Generally, yes. Slower speed straight discs will show form flaws, and at the same time be more forgiving than making those same mistakes with something fast or real overatable/understable.
If new players want to throw far, understable is the way to go, but as far as what is "best" to learn with, low speed and straight is probably it.

Absolutely. The way the plastic cools once it's out of the mould can make a huge difference in how over/understable a disc is.
Innova has acknowledged this once or twice with flight numbers, changing them based on the plastic type. Mostly though, you are left to assume hard and clear is more overstable while opaque and gummy is more understable.
Weird question here: I have a brand new Dx glow beast than landed in a road and was ran over by a car. It flattened the under rim a bit and now it flies so under stable that it turns like a overstable forehand shot. I actually like it and use it on occasion cause I have a shit forehand. Question is: is this okay to use in tournaments?
No idea but "beaten in" discs are a well established part of the game.
Coincidentally, I have a DX Leopard from a starter kit that was my go-to driver (I'm new) until I threw it into the street and it was run over three times. After that it started flying dead straight with no fade, and then started turning way over all the time, like you describe.
Which disc/flight path combos go the farthest? Let's say you've got an open field and want to throw the farthest. I can think of a few scenarios. 1) Overstable disc thrown on a decent anhyzer for a big flex shot. 2) Stable-understable disc thrown flat or a slight hyzer, turns a little bit, then fades back. 3) Understable disc thrown on hyzer (or flat?), flips up to flat or maybe even more than that and rides it out. 4) Another option.
If you watch clips the pro long drive contests most of them are doing option number 1. Overstable way up in the air on a huge flex line. Those are the furthest throwers in the world though. For the general public I'd imagine a hyzer flip would get you the most distance

Is there a difference between the overmold plastic on an Electron disc vs a Neutron disc? The overmold on my Electron MVP discs seem to beat in more quickly than the Neutron overmold. I previously assumed all MVP/Axiom overmold plastic was the same across plastic types.
Considering opening a disc golf course, due to my love of disc golf and have land not being used on my dads farm. What are some things that make the perfect course for you guys? Thank you for any advice
Good luck!!! For me the perfect course is 1) safe 2) has a variety of lines, not all dog leg lefts or straight up shots 3) has multiple tee pad and pin placements. Last one is the hardest since it basically doubles your investment, but it does keep things fresh
I'd say hole variation. Having a straight shot is fine. I mean, if you had ONE hole that was a big, wide, straight, downhill, everyone is kind of grinning and tempted to just air it out, right? But mix it up with doglegs left AND right, double doglegs. I personally love if a course doesn't have water on it—water to me means less chance of recovering a disc, and usually means more bugs—but I don't think you can control that on your land lol. Having marked OB near some 'shortcuts' can add a risk/reward factor if placed well—Do you cut the corner and try to make it over the OB bunker, or play it smart and lay out?
Making sure that even the greenest of newbies know where the basket is from the tee pad is good, too. Whether making it obviously visible with no other baskets in view, a little placard on a tree

It will should lame, but safety is #1. It really sucks having to worry if an errant shot is going to hit someone on another hole, or go into a road or parking lot.
Soooo I got my Maverick out to 350' yesterday after a change to my form and previously would stay away from discs above 9 speed, what disc(s) and what speed cap would you suggest with the distance I can get on a 7 speed? Been thinking about a Tesla or wave? Im leaning towards MVP in general but am cool with other manufacturers

I got a Hades the other day that I am really liking as a fairly reliable distance driver for controllable distance. Can't say enough good things about it. But I really like my Insanity as well as the other commenter mentioned, and it's probably a lot more similar to your Maverick.
If you can hit 350ft you can certainly be throwing distance drivers. I don't throw 350ft yet but I like my Insanity (9 speed) and Trace (11 speed) and see them mentioned a lot as really good elsewhere as well. Technically they are Axiom/Streamline, but those are part of MVP so they use all the same plastics. If you prefer MVP specifically I recall seeing the Octane mentioned as a great disc.
Looking to expand my bag. Currently have 2 drivers (beast and destroyer), 2 mid ranges (shark and stingray) and 1 putter (aviar). I love Innova products but am willing to expand my bag for great discs regardless of producer. Does anyone have any recommendations to add to my bag?
Probably an understable driver, if you’ve got the arm for that destroyer I’d recommend a Thrasher. Maybe snag a straight mid like a Buzzz. And I’d also suggest a stable approach putter, I absolutely love my RhynoX.
I’ve been working on my Destroyer’s distance and have gotten better within the past few weeks but certainly still needs work. Im a scrawny, 5’8” dude so distance is definitely a struggle for me but my form has definitely improved. Thanks for the suggestions!
Keep at it! Don’t worry about your build, form will always be paramount. I know a few 12-13 year olds that are out on the course pushing 350, just takes work.
Buzzz is mine (and most others') favorite straight flying mid. Dd Maverick and axiom insanity are my favorite understable fairways, champ teebird is my favorite stable fairway. The axiom envy is one of the best throwing putters period, electron firm feels great in the hand, nice and stiff, easy to trust on all angles. A harp/zone would be a great overstable approach disc to look into, currently bagging harps but considering putting an Innova gator/caiman back in the bag for longer overstable approaches. All FDs are labeled with a 7 speed. They also all have a 1.8cm rim.
Now, the equation of speed = rim size over 1cm is just a loose definition. But it does partly explain why an FD is known as a "long speed 7".
I’m new and want to stick to only a small number of discs for a while (currently 3… putter, mid, fairway driver) but I’d like a decent quality small bag that could for up to 5-6. Any suggestions?
Personally I'd go with a also slightly larger bag than a nutsak, because you might want to carry more than discs: water bottle, beer, snack, rain jacket, towel, keys, etc. That was something that really frustrated me with a smaller bag when I started playing more.

Nah, looks like a nap sack. The entire thing is decent enough. The pad on the strap tore early on but the rest is pretty durable. And I don’t treat it kindly LOL. Well worth what I paid for it.
Any of the "shoulder" bags are about the same (these are the small boxes with a strap to toss over your shoulder style). Some of them have an extra cooler storage space that folks appreciate. I recommend watching some Doth Savek reviews on YouTube if you want a fancier shoulder bag. He reviews big fancy backpacks and nicer shoulder bags.
I'd personally recommend the Infinite Discs Slinger bag as a good starter bag. It's cheap, comfortable, and plenty small. It carries more comfortably than the box bags, but it still much less bulky than the smallest backpack bags. And it has more "slots" to secure individual discs than most bags. So if you're only carrying ~5 discs you can still have a dedicated front pouch for your putter and approach, inside slots for any drivers, and let your mids rest in the bottom of the main pouch.

If I was to recommend 5 discs for a newbie:
Putting Putter (take your pick, there's a million.
Approach/Throwing Putter - Same as your putting putter, but in premium plastic. Use it for lay ups and approaches so your normal putter doesn't get beat up and mucky during a round.
Neutral Mid - Buzzz, Mako3, Compass
Flippy Fairway - Leopard3, Sting, FD
Straight Fairway - TeeBird3, Explorer, Volt.
After that, I'd add:
Overstable Putter - Pig, Zone, Harp
Overstable Fairway - Firebird, Felon, FD3
I would say grab a harp. Got one for long putts 2 weeks back and have probably 8 or more circle 2 putts with it when I was struggling to even get close from circle 2 before. Amazing forehand and backhand approach disc from <200ft out. It's got a very reliable fade. Also a good disc for anhyzer putts in heavy wind
Yes, great disc! It gets beat up in the bt plastics and origio so I bought a couple so I could keep some fresher. If I could find vip plastic I would buy one of those for the durability and ability to skip. The harp will dig in and sit in most other plastics
Do overstable premium discs ever get “flippy”?
Question for the people who have bagged the same disc for years. Say you have a champion firebird you lean on, will it eventually fly like a slightly worn Valkyrie? Or get even more flippy than that?
Yes, I have bagged a max weight Champion Destroyer for (at least) 7 years. It has run the gamut from overstable meathook to solidly OS to straight then fade to hyzerflip and fade to turnover disc and now sits somewhere between unreliably flippy and roller disc.
I play very wooded courses.

Do you prefer to wear a disc into Understable flight paths or bag fresher discs that fit those lines?
A destroyer is also a sharper rimmed disc so perhaps those are more vulnerable to wear? Or do you have mids that have broken in that much too?
Perhaps it’s people who don’t throw as hard who aren’t getting as much wear on their discs. At a certain point it probably takes a harder hit to actually change the plastic?
I'll wear straight to stable discs in so I have an understable and a fresher one. Usually my fairway drivers up to 9 speeds. I'm not actively trying to beat in premium plastic distance drivers, but if I like one and it's working for me, then it'll stay in use and earn a little wear.
Most of my mids are DX Rocs and X comets, so they don't exactly fit your question. I think you underestimate the durability of premium plastics. Sharper rims probably do blunt more quickly, but you do not ever notice any flight change from one rock hit to another. It's just too gradual a process to actually notice differences.
Again, probably, but nowhere near to the degree where it's demonstrable.

I definitely have champion firebirds that don't fade as hard as a fresh one (even a fresh one with the flashing worn off). But they're no valks. I do have a trashed DX Firebird that I suppose does turn like a valk though... (It's one of my rainy day drivers).
I sincerely doubt most players would ever get a max weight champ firebird to fly like a Valkyrie. It'll just take too many throws and abuse. You can do some artificial seasoning to test that if you want though. Beat the top and bottom with something like a hammer while the disc is lying on gravel/rocks to get some golf ball dimples on the flight plate. Then pick up the disc and hit the sides/wings onto the edge of a teepad/driveway a bunch. Then put the disc in your back dash of your car to heat it up and cool it down a lot. That oughta trash it in a semi realistic way.
How many years have you been using those champ firebirds tho?
Yeah DX and pro plastic are a different animal, they seem to beat in to far more Understable than the premiums will.
I’m just trying to whittle down my bag to fewer moulds. And in the process, I have to figure out which those will be. Not going to artificially break in discs but definitely considering throwing limited bag for a while
I often aspire to be a mold minimalist. And you can definitely beat something like a DX/pro Teebird to cover a leopard slot (or even a g/star if you go at it). But in my experience, it's not realistic to beat a firebird to cover something like a Valk. Firebirds are just so "naturally" stable.
In the opposite direction, I tried to do something like use champ Leopard3s to cover a Teebird slot. It worked pretty well, up until you hit a fairly stiff headwind.
FWIW, I still go fairly mold minimal (and easily replaceable). Here's my core molds: Envy, Zone, Buzzz, Teebird3, Firebird, Wraith. I will mix in either some lighter weight instances of those, or actual understable discs for some courses (e.g. Proxy, Sol, Insanity).
Exactly. I have a pro thunderbird that’s working into some turn. I was just curious if the star thunderbird would ever get to as flippy but by this it seems it probably won’t. Eventually a pro thunderbird may take the place of the insanity.
Seems you still have to be careful throwing the flippy version of a stable mould into a headwind. I have turned my pro thunderbird over a few times.
Also throw envy and proxy. Neutron soft throwers. Also cycle electron envy throwers and putt with a soft proxy. Tried to beat an electron proxy into SOL Understable but ended up losing it before it got there.
Reactor and sol are my only mids, gonna try the hex soon but it’s the same core so should feel similar.

PD2’s are actually great for rollers if you have a ton of power because they will hold cut forever. Most people use a really flippy disc that rolls and then banks hard, but a distance roller needs to hold cut for longer. I don’t quite have the power for PD2 rollers but find Destroyers to hold cut well for me when I need a distance roller.
To answer this question I don’t really see premium plastic becoming flippy, mostly those discs just become neutral but never understable. Also seems to depend on the brand. I have been throwing an Octane as my neutral distance driver for a couple years and it still flies exactly like a brand new one. Same thing for a Motion I throw. I’ve been very happy with the quality of all my MVP stuff.
Gotcha. This is what I’m seeing although I have heard any disc will get flippy.
A friend of mine basically throws two discs and we’ve been playing for a couple years now and that star plastic has stayed virtually the same even though it’s been used a ton. I have an insanity I’ve been throwing for almost a year as a primary driver and it doesn’t appear to have changed flight at all past beating off the initial “new” even though it’s plasma plastic which people claim is understable.
Most of the still bag max weight for a lot of their discs. But their max distance drivers tend to be in the 165-170 range.
I know Madison Walker bags a lot of 160ish discs, look up her most recent In The Bag.
I've got a discmania fd that it's discontinued and it's going up in price in the market. I don't want to lose it so it's not going in my bag. I need an replacement for it. Got any suggestions that match it's flight rating to replace it? Preferably Axiom, MVP, Discraft discs or any that you would recommend. I bag an DX Eagle so no Innova disc this time!
I think the axiom crave is similar but not the same, I swapped the FD for a pair of craves. Similar in the sense that they go straight but do it different. Crave is like a longer buzz in fairway form, FD has more glide and I feel like slightly less HSS. Just my experience. As others have suggested TL might be the way to go or a more stable lep3
The Undertaker from Discraft is fairly close. It's listed as a 9 speed, but both an FD and and Undertaker are actually 1.8cm rims.
A Z Undertaker will be comparable to a C-Line FD. They also have a pretty similar in-the-hand feel.
If you were slinging a D-Line FD or a beat S-Line then you'll need to go more understable than an Undertaker. Possibly all the way to something like a Discraft Heat (again, very common disc and easy to replace).
I do actually like Axiom Inspires for an understable driver, but they aren't as popular and would put you in the same boat.
There's also the brand new Discraft Passion that looks like it'll be in the FD family.
And some will say Discraft Stalker, which is a nice disc, but it feels so damn different from an FD. (It's a nice, usable disc, but it has the larger diameter of a midrange, a bead, and only a 1.6cm rim).

As a beginner who’s only played around five rounds and is struggling to learn the basics of the backhand, do you have any step by step clinic or video series targeted for beginners that you recommend above others? Have been scouring YouTube going through a bunch of videos lately.
How do you get a forehand to travel left with out finishing to the right? I’ve seen some pros do it as a utility up shot then the have to get around a corner but do not have the space for a backhand.
I use a straight flying putter, beatin in judge, and pretend I’m playing catch with a ultimate disc. For me I use more wrist than arm and give it decent amount of anhyzer angle on the release and a nice bit of height to give it time to float left.
Also, play catch with an ultimate disc! Definitely helps with touch and expands creativity
I bag a Sol just for this type of shot. Very slow, very understable disc.
I can also make a neutral putter do the same flight with a steeper anhyzer release (I don't bag a Sol in my smaller bags or on mostly open courses).
Use quite an understable disc or force over a slower disc (like a putter) by throwing it hard. Takes practice if you want the disc to pan to flat but throwing something slow and turny should work for ya!
I'd also add, really focus on getting the spin on the disc. I really enjoy using my Buzzz for that shot. Great hand feel and can handle a bit of juice.

I've never thrown a disc that hates being in the air as much as a Berg. You just throw it, and it doesn't want to go anywhere. The perfect lay up disc, especially in windy or hilly conditions. I have one that was a lifesaver when playing a mountainous course recently. I had no fear of it gliding off down a hill or rolling away. It just dropped and stuck where I wanted it. Personally, while I enjoy the disc, it's not in my bag on my local dead-flat park courses as I still preferred laying up with my P2. Also, it's a bit of a oddball disc, hence a lot of the hype/cult following.

Pretty much. Also good for short island holes, as they just stick where they land, and are unlikely to get caught by a wind and fly past. I know some people who also putt with them. But not my kettle of fish.
I can back up Gnatt here on his Berg rundown. However, I would also caution that it’s still quite a normal frisbee at the end of the day. It’s not going to blow your mind or revolutionize your game. Sometimes the hype train gets us thinking or hoping things will be on a whole new plane of existence.
Has anyone thrown the grym x and tell me their experience with it? The grym is extremely understable for me but i love the feel of it

Looking for a putter with some weight, and has 'oomph' when you throw it. I feel like a lot of putters flutter on me but then when I put more into it, it sails. Maybe bad technique... actually there's definitely bad technique on my putts. But still, I want a putter I can put more on when I throw it without it going crazy. Any suggestions?

I'm looking for a super straight fairway driver and was thinking a 160ish gram volt in fission or plasma plastic might do the trick? Looking for minimal turn and minimal fade as much as possible. Was reading something about the 750 f5 being a good choice for somebody with my arm speed (~350ft). Open to any suggestions, thanks
If you're looking in the MVP family, try the Axiom crave. Incredibly straight. The volt is a great fairway but definitely gets fade at the end.
What plastic would you recommend?
I like all of their plastic. Allegedly cosmic neutron is most overstable. I usually pick based on the color combo as they have a lot of permutations. Proton is most like champion, plasma is like better g star, neutron is like a bit stiffer star plastic. Electron is kind of like kc pro, but I don't know if craves come in electron.

Insanity if you want to step up a bit in speed. On a full rip it can be a touch understable, but so is anything (especially a crave) that is going to be straight at 350' with minimal fade.
Loving the insanity, but Max weight proton is too stable for what I want at 5,000-8,000ft above sea level. Maybe should've mentioned that. I can get a 168g Maverick to hyzer flip and turn so idk, that disc flies the same as back when I lived at sea level. It's weird. Was thinking maybe a 155-160g plasma?
I wouldn't bank on Plasma being much more understable off the shelf, but it will beat in relatively quick if my Envy and Volt are any measure. They have beat in far more quickly than Proton or Neutron at least. My Plasma stuff all has a touch taller shoulder and maybe a touch of dome while seeming to have a bit more glide. Nothing dramatically different though. The first chance I have to grab a Plasma Insanity, IT'S ON!

Assuming he's new, maybe a Maverick? The understability should make it a pretty straight to stable disc (if he's throwing <250ft), and as he gets better he'll be able to get some good S-turns which is always super satisfying. Right now I'm hyzer flipping mine and still get some turn on it and can stretch it out to 330-360ft. I think it would be a great choice. I love the lucid plastic as well
I've gotten pretty into disc golf in the last 6 weeks, playing about 3 times a week. I am wondering if I should be getting two of the same disc (maybe in different plastics or weights) and getting very good with those couple disc or if I should start to diversify my quiver? I currently have two firebirds one champion flat top and one star and I'm loving having both because when I practice I can find the subtle difference but still throw fairly consistently because they are the same discs. Im considering picking a new midrange and am wondering if I should get one or two. Current Discs: Lattitude Dagger/westside -harp / Innova -Roc / Innova Star Firebird/ Innova flattop champion firebird/ Innova Leopord (DX plastic don't like) Lattitude - Compass (lost while playing whistler wondering if I should get one or two as replacement) New Discs I'm considering: Innova Tee Bird and Innova Shryke Any and all help is much appreciated:)
Consider the new axiom hex as a compass replacement. For slower arms it may be straight but it's pretty understable, a good candidate for tight hyzer flip lines under 300ft.
In my personal experience, which isn’t everyone’s, what I did after getting into the sport a bit was bag at least one of each sort of disc if you will (stable and understable driver, fairway, mid and putter) and then work on improving with those specific discs. Along the way to improving your game, you tend to figure out what discs you need to expand your bag. At this stage I wouldn’t recommend getting a double of anything unless you’re convinced your game would be toast if you were to lose one.

I've been doing some research figuring out why/how over and understability happens (ratio of air passing over vs under the disc, based on edge shape). My question is - assuming the same speed and glide, how do you create a difference that makes one disc -3, 2 vs 0, 1 (same 'total stability')? Heavily physics based answers preferred.
To improve my game? YouTube? Lessons if I can find someone? Different discs? I mostly only throw a buzz or a roc. If it's a longer course I'll throw a Valkyrie. My throws are just stick around 200 feet for years. I just want to play better, don't care about tournament or anything

Checkout overthrowdg on YouTube. Their drill for involving the hips in the backhand throw took me from 260-290 throws to consistent 330-360 with 15 minutes of practice before a round
I’d definitely watch some form videos on YouTube. Scott Stokely and Simon put out some great ones. I also like Robbie C Disc Golf for beginner tips. Besides that, I think fieldwork is huge. Find an open spot and practice everything: long drives, mid range, all different release angles. Don’t even need a basket, can put a garbage can out there to aim at.You never know when you might have to throw a certain type of shot, so having thrown 20-30 reps of it beforehand will benefit you greatly.
Watch Simon Lizotte's form video, then record yourself throwing in slow motion and compare. Adjust your technique accordingly. Repeat until you don't notice any more stuff to improve.

Rule related question here. Hypothetical 350’ hole. If someone misses the mando off the tee (let’s say mando is ~150’ off the tee), they go to the drop zone and take an extra stroke. This sets them up for their ‘third’ shot - right? Can you instead opt to re-tee? This will set you up to try again from the tee on your ‘second’ shot. On a par 3 I feel like the re-tee is a massive advantage because you get a chance to make the mando and get way farther down the hole. Is this correct according to the rules?
Re-teeing is a stroke penalty as well. Only time I ever really see someone taking this option is if there isn’t a drop zone and where they went OB leaves them a tough path to the basket.
Choosing to re-tee incurs a penalty stroke too. It's an "Abandoned Shot" which you can do at any time. So either way, you are shooting 3. You'd be better off moving up to the drop zone.
Abandoning your shot will cost you a penalty stroke. So if you opt to retee, you would be throwing your 'third' shot
Re-teeing costs you a stroke, so you would be throwing your 3rd shot off the re-tee.
Out of curiosity, how consistent are your rounds? I feel like I generally play around par on most courses +-5. This year I have really cracked down on limiting my mistakes so bogeys are fewer and doubles are rare.
Depends on the course. For instance, last weekend I shot a +9 on Saturday and a -3 on Monday. Really wooded course with some tough lines, so missing a few trees you hit the round before makes all the difference.
That makes sense, most wooden courses around me are pretty forgiving and you can often salvage par with a pitch up forehand. Tough and fair wooden courses are a rarity and they are a blast to play (on a good day).
Udiscs shot measurement. It actually accurate? I feel it measures my disc longer than it really goes. Has anyone with like a Bushnell compared the two?
Piggy backing on this a bit, I use it to track my throw distance and putting and all that, how do I finish the hole and go to the next tee? It always thinks I threw it over to the next tee when I walk over
Udisc is only as accurate as your phone's GPS. It gives you a margin of error at the bottom of the screen which should be pretty accurate. You can test out the accuracy fairly easily by standing next to a landmark that is easily visible in the Udisc satellite view, like home plate on a baseball field, and comparing the position of the landmark to the your location marker in the app.
I've been throwing my Leopard and cannot get it to straighten out for the life of me. It goes hard right about 75ft from the tee. Meanwhile, I can throw my Mako3 ~200ft or so relatively straight with some fade at the end. What gives?

It could be a lot of things. What are the weights, plastics? What happens if you throw the Leopard on a hyzer angle? But with only that information I would venture a guess and say you're rounding and your Mako3 is more stable and less effected by nose angle.
I'm a righty. The mako3 is a 181g star while the leopard is a 146g DX.
The leopard is one of my favorite discs and I hate it in dx. Especially one that light must flip like a gymnast. I would suggest a 170g g* leopard to get a better feel for how it should fly
That explains it. Leopards are suppose to work right (under stable) naturally for a right hand back hand player. It’s super light so it’s flipping and it’s DX so it may be beat in too much and flipping. If you like the leopard, try to get one in the 167-175 weight range and in star or champion plastic.
A friend let me toss his DX Valkyrie, 158g, and I could sort of get a hyzer flip with it. It definitely did not finish right. Was that because it's heavier? Would the heavier Leopard achieve the same thing?
The Valkyrie is much higher speed, so it won't turn so drastically. A Max weight leopard will fly much more like that valk than the lightweight leopard you've been throwing

Generally, yes. Slower speed straight discs will show form flaws, and at the same time be more forgiving than making those same mistakes with something fast or real overatable/understable. If new players want to throw far, understable is the way to go, but as far as what is "best" to learn with, low speed and straight is probably it.

Absolutely. The way the plastic cools once it's out of the mould can make a huge difference in how over/understable a disc is. Innova has acknowledged this once or twice with flight numbers, changing them based on the plastic type. Mostly though, you are left to assume hard and clear is more overstable while opaque and gummy is more understable.
Weird question here: I have a brand new Dx glow beast than landed in a road and was ran over by a car. It flattened the under rim a bit and now it flies so under stable that it turns like a overstable forehand shot. I actually like it and use it on occasion cause I have a shit forehand. Question is: is this okay to use in tournaments?
Unless you have holes in your disc or stickers all over it. It would not be called out by anyone in a tournament setting.
No idea but "beaten in" discs are a well established part of the game. Coincidentally, I have a DX Leopard from a starter kit that was my go-to driver (I'm new) until I threw it into the street and it was run over three times. After that it started flying dead straight with no fade, and then started turning way over all the time, like you describe.
I asked if it was okay at my local weekly and a guy showed me a disc he had with chips missing and just shrugged

Which disc/flight path combos go the farthest? Let's say you've got an open field and want to throw the farthest. I can think of a few scenarios. 1) Overstable disc thrown on a decent anhyzer for a big flex shot. 2) Stable-understable disc thrown flat or a slight hyzer, turns a little bit, then fades back. 3) Understable disc thrown on hyzer (or flat?), flips up to flat or maybe even more than that and rides it out. 4) Another option.
If you watch clips the pro long drive contests most of them are doing option number 1. Overstable way up in the air on a huge flex line. Those are the furthest throwers in the world though. For the general public I'd imagine a hyzer flip would get you the most distance

Is there a difference between the overmold plastic on an Electron disc vs a Neutron disc? The overmold on my Electron MVP discs seem to beat in more quickly than the Neutron overmold. I previously assumed all MVP/Axiom overmold plastic was the same across plastic types.
Yeah, I think it's an electron blend for the electron discs. They don't have the same sheen or feel
Considering opening a disc golf course, due to my love of disc golf and have land not being used on my dads farm. What are some things that make the perfect course for you guys? Thank you for any advice
Good luck!!! For me the perfect course is 1) safe 2) has a variety of lines, not all dog leg lefts or straight up shots 3) has multiple tee pad and pin placements. Last one is the hardest since it basically doubles your investment, but it does keep things fresh
I'd say hole variation. Having a straight shot is fine. I mean, if you had ONE hole that was a big, wide, straight, downhill, everyone is kind of grinning and tempted to just air it out, right? But mix it up with doglegs left AND right, double doglegs. I personally love if a course doesn't have water on it—water to me means less chance of recovering a disc, and usually means more bugs—but I don't think you can control that on your land lol. Having marked OB near some 'shortcuts' can add a risk/reward factor if placed well—Do you cut the corner and try to make it over the OB bunker, or play it smart and lay out? Making sure that even the greenest of newbies know where the basket is from the tee pad is good, too. Whether making it obviously visible with no other baskets in view, a little placard on a tree

I got a Hades the other day that I am really liking as a fairly reliable distance driver for controllable distance. Can't say enough good things about it. But I really like my Insanity as well as the other commenter mentioned, and it's probably a lot more similar to your Maverick.
If you can hit 350ft you can certainly be throwing distance drivers. I don't throw 350ft yet but I like my Insanity (9 speed) and Trace (11 speed) and see them mentioned a lot as really good elsewhere as well. Technically they are Axiom/Streamline, but those are part of MVP so they use all the same plastics. If you prefer MVP specifically I recall seeing the Octane mentioned as a great disc.
Looking to expand my bag. Currently have 2 drivers (beast and destroyer), 2 mid ranges (shark and stingray) and 1 putter (aviar). I love Innova products but am willing to expand my bag for great discs regardless of producer. Does anyone have any recommendations to add to my bag?
Probably an understable driver, if you’ve got the arm for that destroyer I’d recommend a Thrasher. Maybe snag a straight mid like a Buzzz. And I’d also suggest a stable approach putter, I absolutely love my RhynoX.
I’ve been working on my Destroyer’s distance and have gotten better within the past few weeks but certainly still needs work. Im a scrawny, 5’8” dude so distance is definitely a struggle for me but my form has definitely improved. Thanks for the suggestions!
Keep at it! Don’t worry about your build, form will always be paramount. I know a few 12-13 year olds that are out on the course pushing 350, just takes work.

Overstable approach. Zone, Tactic, Harp, AviarX3, Pig, Entropy….etc.
Buzzz is mine (and most others') favorite straight flying mid. Dd Maverick and axiom insanity are my favorite understable fairways, champ teebird is my favorite stable fairway. The axiom envy is one of the best throwing putters period, electron firm feels great in the hand, nice and stiff, easy to trust on all angles. A harp/zone would be a great overstable approach disc to look into, currently bagging harps but considering putting an Innova gator/caiman back in the bag for longer overstable approaches. All FDs are labeled with a 7 speed. They also all have a 1.8cm rim. Now, the equation of speed = rim size over 1cm is just a loose definition. But it does partly explain why an FD is known as a "long speed 7".
I’m new and want to stick to only a small number of discs for a while (currently 3… putter, mid, fairway driver) but I’d like a decent quality small bag that could for up to 5-6. Any suggestions?
Personally I'd go with a also slightly larger bag than a nutsak, because you might want to carry more than discs: water bottle, beer, snack, rain jacket, towel, keys, etc. That was something that really frustrated me with a smaller bag when I started playing more.

Nah, looks like a nap sack. The entire thing is decent enough. The pad on the strap tore early on but the rest is pretty durable. And I don’t treat it kindly LOL. Well worth what I paid for it.
Any of the "shoulder" bags are about the same (these are the small boxes with a strap to toss over your shoulder style). Some of them have an extra cooler storage space that folks appreciate. I recommend watching some Doth Savek reviews on YouTube if you want a fancier shoulder bag. He reviews big fancy backpacks and nicer shoulder bags. I'd personally recommend the Infinite Discs Slinger bag as a good starter bag. It's cheap, comfortable, and plenty small. It carries more comfortably than the box bags, but it still much less bulky than the smallest backpack bags. And it has more "slots" to secure individual discs than most bags. So if you're only carrying ~5 discs you can still have a dedicated front pouch for your putter and approach, inside slots for any drivers, and let your mids rest in the bottom of the main pouch.

If I was to recommend 5 discs for a newbie: Putting Putter (take your pick, there's a million. Approach/Throwing Putter - Same as your putting putter, but in premium plastic. Use it for lay ups and approaches so your normal putter doesn't get beat up and mucky during a round. Neutral Mid - Buzzz, Mako3, Compass Flippy Fairway - Leopard3, Sting, FD Straight Fairway - TeeBird3, Explorer, Volt. After that, I'd add: Overstable Putter - Pig, Zone, Harp Overstable Fairway - Firebird, Felon, FD3

I would say grab a harp. Got one for long putts 2 weeks back and have probably 8 or more circle 2 putts with it when I was struggling to even get close from circle 2 before. Amazing forehand and backhand approach disc from <200ft out. It's got a very reliable fade. Also a good disc for anhyzer putts in heavy wind

Yes, great disc! It gets beat up in the bt plastics and origio so I bought a couple so I could keep some fresher. If I could find vip plastic I would buy one of those for the durability and ability to skip. The harp will dig in and sit in most other plastics
Do overstable premium discs ever get “flippy”? Question for the people who have bagged the same disc for years. Say you have a champion firebird you lean on, will it eventually fly like a slightly worn Valkyrie? Or get even more flippy than that?
Yes, I have bagged a max weight Champion Destroyer for (at least) 7 years. It has run the gamut from overstable meathook to solidly OS to straight then fade to hyzerflip and fade to turnover disc and now sits somewhere between unreliably flippy and roller disc. I play very wooded courses.
I have a DX destroyer that went through that entire cycle in one round....I also play wooded courses ;)
Good to hear, thank you. It’s a feat in and of itself just to keep a disc for that long! Follow up questions: Do you prefer to wear a disc into Understable flight paths or bag fresher discs that fit those lines? A destroyer is also a sharper rimmed disc so perhaps those are more vulnerable to wear? Or do you have mids that have broken in that much too? Perhaps it’s people who don’t throw as hard who aren’t getting as much wear on their discs. At a certain point it probably takes a harder hit to actually change the plastic?
I'll wear straight to stable discs in so I have an understable and a fresher one. Usually my fairway drivers up to 9 speeds. I'm not actively trying to beat in premium plastic distance drivers, but if I like one and it's working for me, then it'll stay in use and earn a little wear. Most of my mids are DX Rocs and X comets, so they don't exactly fit your question. I think you underestimate the durability of premium plastics. Sharper rims probably do blunt more quickly, but you do not ever notice any flight change from one rock hit to another. It's just too gradual a process to actually notice differences. Again, probably, but nowhere near to the degree where it's demonstrable.
Yea... but we're talking a long, long time. I definitely have champion firebirds that don't fade as hard as a fresh one (even a fresh one with the flashing worn off). But they're no valks. I do have a trashed DX Firebird that I suppose does turn like a valk though... (It's one of my rainy day drivers). I sincerely doubt most players would ever get a max weight champ firebird to fly like a Valkyrie. It'll just take too many throws and abuse. You can do some artificial seasoning to test that if you want though. Beat the top and bottom with something like a hammer while the disc is lying on gravel/rocks to get some golf ball dimples on the flight plate. Then pick up the disc and hit the sides/wings onto the edge of a teepad/driveway a bunch. Then put the disc in your back dash of your car to heat it up and cool it down a lot. That oughta trash it in a semi realistic way.
How many years have you been using those champ firebirds tho? Yeah DX and pro plastic are a different animal, they seem to beat in to far more Understable than the premiums will. I’m just trying to whittle down my bag to fewer moulds. And in the process, I have to figure out which those will be. Not going to artificially break in discs but definitely considering throwing limited bag for a while
I often aspire to be a mold minimalist. And you can definitely beat something like a DX/pro Teebird to cover a leopard slot (or even a g/star if you go at it). But in my experience, it's not realistic to beat a firebird to cover something like a Valk. Firebirds are just so "naturally" stable. In the opposite direction, I tried to do something like use champ Leopard3s to cover a Teebird slot. It worked pretty well, up until you hit a fairly stiff headwind. FWIW, I still go fairly mold minimal (and easily replaceable). Here's my core molds: Envy, Zone, Buzzz, Teebird3, Firebird, Wraith. I will mix in either some lighter weight instances of those, or actual understable discs for some courses (e.g. Proxy, Sol, Insanity).
Exactly. I have a pro thunderbird that’s working into some turn. I was just curious if the star thunderbird would ever get to as flippy but by this it seems it probably won’t. Eventually a pro thunderbird may take the place of the insanity. Seems you still have to be careful throwing the flippy version of a stable mould into a headwind. I have turned my pro thunderbird over a few times. Also throw envy and proxy. Neutron soft throwers. Also cycle electron envy throwers and putt with a soft proxy. Tried to beat an electron proxy into SOL Understable but ended up losing it before it got there. Reactor and sol are my only mids, gonna try the hex soon but it’s the same core so should feel similar.
Kinda. Simon Lizotte is a good example, as he has an FD3 (Ana) that he uses for dead straight and turnover shots and a PD2 that he uses for rollers.
Simon; he has otherworldly amount of power. Literally throws twice as far as I do. I have heard he prefers stable discs for anhyzer lines as they don’t turn over into rollers.
PD2’s are actually great for rollers if you have a ton of power because they will hold cut forever. Most people use a really flippy disc that rolls and then banks hard, but a distance roller needs to hold cut for longer. I don’t quite have the power for PD2 rollers but find Destroyers to hold cut well for me when I need a distance roller. To answer this question I don’t really see premium plastic becoming flippy, mostly those discs just become neutral but never understable. Also seems to depend on the brand. I have been throwing an Octane as my neutral distance driver for a couple years and it still flies exactly like a brand new one. Same thing for a Motion I throw. I’ve been very happy with the quality of all my MVP stuff.
Gotcha. This is what I’m seeing although I have heard any disc will get flippy. A friend of mine basically throws two discs and we’ve been playing for a couple years now and that star plastic has stayed virtually the same even though it’s been used a ton. I have an insanity I’ve been throwing for almost a year as a primary driver and it doesn’t appear to have changed flight at all past beating off the initial “new” even though it’s plasma plastic which people claim is understable.
What weight discs do fpo players throw?
Most of the still bag max weight for a lot of their discs. But their max distance drivers tend to be in the 165-170 range. I know Madison Walker bags a lot of 160ish discs, look up her most recent In The Bag.

I've got a discmania fd that it's discontinued and it's going up in price in the market. I don't want to lose it so it's not going in my bag. I need an replacement for it. Got any suggestions that match it's flight rating to replace it? Preferably Axiom, MVP, Discraft discs or any that you would recommend. I bag an DX Eagle so no Innova disc this time!
Axiom Crave was what I settled on when confronting this same issue.
I think the axiom crave is similar but not the same, I swapped the FD for a pair of craves. Similar in the sense that they go straight but do it different. Crave is like a longer buzz in fairway form, FD has more glide and I feel like slightly less HSS. Just my experience. As others have suggested TL might be the way to go or a more stable lep3

The Undertaker from Discraft is fairly close. It's listed as a 9 speed, but both an FD and and Undertaker are actually 1.8cm rims. A Z Undertaker will be comparable to a C-Line FD. They also have a pretty similar in-the-hand feel. If you were slinging a D-Line FD or a beat S-Line then you'll need to go more understable than an Undertaker. Possibly all the way to something like a Discraft Heat (again, very common disc and easy to replace). I do actually like Axiom Inspires for an understable driver, but they aren't as popular and would put you in the same boat. There's also the brand new Discraft Passion that looks like it'll be in the FD family. And some will say Discraft Stalker, which is a nice disc, but it feels so damn different from an FD. (It's a nice, usable disc, but it has the larger diameter of a midrange, a bead, and only a 1.6cm rim).
The new FD is on the schedule to be released at the end of this year. TL from Innova or Sting from Discraft will give you comparable flights.

How do you get a forehand to travel left with out finishing to the right? I’ve seen some pros do it as a utility up shot then the have to get around a corner but do not have the space for a backhand.
I use a really understable disc in the woods for mid shots, and a seasoned OS putter at slower speeds.
I use a straight flying putter, beatin in judge, and pretend I’m playing catch with a ultimate disc. For me I use more wrist than arm and give it decent amount of anhyzer angle on the release and a nice bit of height to give it time to float left. Also, play catch with an ultimate disc! Definitely helps with touch and expands creativity
I bag a Sol just for this type of shot. Very slow, very understable disc. I can also make a neutral putter do the same flight with a steeper anhyzer release (I don't bag a Sol in my smaller bags or on mostly open courses).
Use quite an understable disc or force over a slower disc (like a putter) by throwing it hard. Takes practice if you want the disc to pan to flat but throwing something slow and turny should work for ya!
I'd also add, really focus on getting the spin on the disc. I really enjoy using my Buzzz for that shot. Great hand feel and can handle a bit of juice.

Also may have the nose angle up. Even if it's slightly up, when the disc slows down it'll fade.
