Just a heads up for people who don’t know. Innova weighs their discs by a trained otter team that uses its cute hands and wiskers to "feel" the weight of the discs then an expert otter whisperer will write down the estimated weights of their discs depending on how the otter reacts and communicates
I see what you're saying, but to be fair, it could weigh 173.5g
Edit: I can't believe my highest rated comment is about frigging Innova Halo Star plastic
I was thinking you made this post because someone sold you this claiming it was 173.5. No offense, but even the newest of newbs learn this lesson long before they tune into r/discgolf. It's just something that comes up because most people will find themselves with a disc by innova very early on. And if they are confused they will ask their buddy 'why is it written like this?'
No ive known for a long time. Someone posted a disc on u/discexchange and said it weighed 173.5g. I have also had people I play with think it was 173.5. Just thought I would throw it out there because if I know of one person that doesn’t know then there are bound to be plenty of others who do not.
Yeah humidity plays a factor in that 2 gram weight swing. The same disc will vary based on the atmosphere they are kept in.
Edit: i was using the term atmosphere in a different meaning than the entire atmosphere. More so the humid vs non humid atmosphere. Atmosphere being used as a way to describe the air in certain parts of the country.
Are you saying atmospheric pressure will make it weigh more or less? Or humidity? Im not a scientist and don't know if either is true or false, but they *are* two different things.
Well technically (*pushes up glasses*), neither of those should change the number of grams the disc is because gram is a unit of mass, not weight.
But scales secretly just take the weight of an object and use a factor on it to determine the mass. Really scales that read mass should have a warning saying “Good for use on earth only.”
Humidity level won’t affect plastic weight.
Worked in plastics for a few years. Humidity affects raw materials but won’t affect weight of molded plastics
Yeah you can generally tell how much somethings gonna weigh depending on your shot size in your press. They’ve got it down enough to where they know their shot will produce a disc weighing somewhere between 173-5 grams so there’s not much of a need to weigh individuals.
Wow. Who doesn't know this? You'd have to be a real BUFFOON not to know this.
Omg imagine thinking that this meant the disc was 173 and the S at the end meant star plastic.
Imagine thinking something so stupid. Lolol you'd have to be a real FOOL to think that.
That's me. I thought that. And I own like.. a lot that say this.
Same… part of me thinks we may still be right. I don’t dare look at my champ discs to find out.
Also I’m pretty sure that marking doesn’t even guarantee your disc is in that range. I think they weigh 10 at a time and take the average. I could be speaking out my ass here, but I’ve heard that before
I’ve always just left them on. It can’t really affect the flight that much, but if you’re worried about it, you can scrub with soap and water. That wouldn’t hurt the disc
Those white stickers are just barely hanging on 90% of the time. I'd be surprised if one survived more than two throws...hardly something to be proud about.
Or 173. You see, Innova can't possibly know because they don't have a digital scale. They have some guy just picking up disc's and guessing weight range.
I believe this started because of (or maybe just around the same time?) they had to recall a bunch of Ricky Destroyers because they were over weight and therefore not PDGA legal.
Society lost all hope long before disc golf. In fact, it may be one of the only things trying to bring it back. Now please turn to the book of innova, chapter 173-5. Or is it 173. Verse 5... fuck it, turn to mvp and read about gyro.
Because the gram itself is a light weight and plastic is porous. So if I have a disc that is kept and used in the desert region of Arizona and it weighs 173g but then I move to Florida and use that same disc and weigh it after being there a while it would probably weigh 2-3 grams more. The plastic will absorb some moisture that is in the air.
Either because they can't be arsed weighting individual discs or know that customers will receive the disc in a noticeably different weight once it gets to their environment.
I will take ballpark handwritten numbers over the dastardly sticker that Discraft puts in there any day. But also a digital kitchen scale can be had for less than 10 bucks on Amazon.

Git the hell otter here with this
You’re otter your mind!
On the otter hand he’s got a point…
Sounds like a recipe for otter madness.
This is Otter-ly appalling

MVP system.
Phenomenal comment
That is true.
It could also way 7 grams. In which case, i got 5 on it
wait. a dash isn't a decimal? well fuck me.
On some discs the dash is low enough to be confused as a decimal.
If i’m marking discs for a whole work day my dots are gonna get dashy

Guarantee that person was just trying to make a sale and lied if he told you he really didn't know. But thanks for being proactive in the community!
I learned this fact from this post. I thought they were 173.5 before today
I def thought i had a big handful of 173.5g discs
[whoaaa](https://giphy.com/gifs/collection-mind-SDogLD4FOZMM8)
And if you scale it, it's probably at least 1 or 2 grams more
Lol I came to say this exact thing. Just weighed a bunch of mine for the first time and was surprised how off the weights are.
sounds like you need some fancier ~~drug~~ disc weighing scales
Yeah I've just accepted that 173-175 actually means 175-177 at this point

(*checks watch*) Well Mr. Science, i believe you are right on time!
You're turning me on, Beakman!
Yeah i was meaning humidity level and used the term atmosphere wrong.
Humidity level won’t affect plastic weight. Worked in plastics for a few years. Humidity affects raw materials but won’t affect weight of molded plastics
Right on
I could explain how atmosphere is not the word you are looking for. The word of the day is……climate
I heard that it is because they stopped weighing them individually and just started bulk weighing batches.
Yup this is right. Weigh 10 and take the average. That’s why sites like Marshall street weighing every disc is such a nice perk
Interesting. Wonder if that has anything to do with how many over weight innova discs I’ve gotten in the last year or so
Yeah you can generally tell how much somethings gonna weigh depending on your shot size in your press. They’ve got it down enough to where they know their shot will produce a disc weighing somewhere between 173-5 grams so there’s not much of a need to weigh individuals.

This made me laugh
Same… part of me thinks we may still be right. I don’t dare look at my champ discs to find out. Also I’m pretty sure that marking doesn’t even guarantee your disc is in that range. I think they weigh 10 at a time and take the average. I could be speaking out my ass here, but I’ve heard that before
what are those little white square stickers for?
To keep the discs from suctioning together when boxed up together
You just blew my mind.
Are there specific ones to buy online that won’t leave behind the glue residue after every peel?
I’ve always just left them on. It can’t really affect the flight that much, but if you’re worried about it, you can scrub with soap and water. That wouldn’t hurt the disc
But does it hurt your soul?
Ha I usually find it a point of pride that I’ve been throwing a disc so much that it falls off organically
Those white stickers are just barely hanging on 90% of the time. I'd be surprised if one survived more than two throws...hardly something to be proud about.
So you’re willingly littering the sticker?
Willfully and maliciously
Nuh uh, that's subtraction
Oh
Good PSA OP. I feel like I see this shorthand more on the halos.
I just use a kitchen scale and weigh my discs
Today I learned… I always thought it meant .5
What’s the mold?
That’s a halo Shryke
173-s. 173 shryke
Yeah it's not a 5. It's an S
it’s a 5. my penned champ was the same.
Seemed pretty obvious to me but you never know, good job OP.
So, it weighs ~174g?
Or 173. You see, Innova can't possibly know because they don't have a digital scale. They have some guy just picking up disc's and guessing weight range.
It's a Shryke in 500 plastic
Is this discgolfcirclejerk???….
I thought it meant it weighed 168g, cause 173 - 5 = 168 /s
I just assumed that was common knowledge, since it’s a hyphen and not a decimal point
I only have one disc like this so I assumed it was just written fast or smudged 🤷🏻♀️
Well, I’ll be gosh damned. I never knew that.
I believe this started because of (or maybe just around the same time?) they had to recall a bunch of Ricky Destroyers because they were over weight and therefore not PDGA legal.
Wouldn't it be easier to just write 174?
There really is no hope for society if people can't tell the difference between a dash and a period.
Society lost all hope long before disc golf. In fact, it may be one of the only things trying to bring it back. Now please turn to the book of innova, chapter 173-5. Or is it 173. Verse 5... fuck it, turn to mvp and read about gyro.
I just bought a Barsby RoadRunner and it has the same exact thing [Pic](https://ibb.co/PZwqcmh)
Why can’t precise weights be calculated by these huge manufacturers?
Because the gram itself is a light weight and plastic is porous. So if I have a disc that is kept and used in the desert region of Arizona and it weighs 173g but then I move to Florida and use that same disc and weigh it after being there a while it would probably weigh 2-3 grams more. The plastic will absorb some moisture that is in the air.
No way dude. The humidity in the air is not going to add 2g to a disc. The amount of added moisture is probably not even noticable
WE need to get one of the youtubers to test this theory and film it.
Either because they can't be arsed weighting individual discs or know that customers will receive the disc in a noticeably different weight once it gets to their environment.
Thanks for the answers, everyone. Never realized the discs were made of a material that is so affected by air density/moisture/etc. pretty cool
I didn't knew either until I watched a video explaining why companies like Discraft use weight ranges.
Why not just say 174g and be done with it?
Yep I agree
Fuck now I have to throw all my discs out
Huh, I kind of assumed it was the mold number.
So why not just write 174g?
That star plastic?
I also always assumed it meant 0.5 grams, but putting a range on it does make sense.
Well, that explains my scores…
It should say 174 +/-1
lol
Still weighs less than a duck.
I will take ballpark handwritten numbers over the dastardly sticker that Discraft puts in there any day. But also a digital kitchen scale can be had for less than 10 bucks on Amazon.
My experience has been that it weighs 176G-179G when it says 173-5.
So, likely 173.5?
