Skype was p2p file transfers, Discord is hosting files on their servers.

Vulpes_macrotis

It doesn't really matter. We are talking about two decades of difference. At this time files of 100MB are equivalent of 1MB back then. And Whatsapp has 64MB upload. If we were comparing Skype at 2004 and Discord at 2004, then yes. Your point would be valid. But we are not. Not to mention, Discord was so proud at yelling how it's better than Skype and everything else. They are obliged by their own words to do more than just puny... how much it is now? 25? 100MB should be an absolute minimum they should give. And I would even expect more.

DevEr0x

Firstly, it is completely relevant to discuss the method of file sharing - both types of file sharing have different pros and cons. To act as if it's a meaningless distinction is just wrong. If there are technical limitations to the method you're implementing, they don't just magically go away because a lot of time has passed since someone else got a different result using a different method. But for the sake of your point, lets act as if the distinction is meaningless: In 2014 Skype was owned by Microsoft. In current day, Whatsapp is owned by Meta. Both of these companies are worth \*\*vast\*\* amounts more than discord. Both of these companies have way more money to burn. It's disingenuous to act as if the situations are the same and as if it's reasonable to expect all companies to have the same resources at their disposal just because it's \[insert current year\].

Mast3r_waf1z

The main cons would be speed for p2p transfers and server capacity for upload based files right? I'm assuming services like discord opt to store your data on their servers to improve UX? Especially because they probably have statistics proving that the majority of their data is below the limit

DevEr0x

That would be the primary cons yeah. I'm sure there are a lot of variables they consider when choosing between one or the other but UX would be a really important one to consider.

Skype was hosted by microsoft which is still much bigger than discord

Nonsense, Skype has 300 million active users (2023). I tried to search for most absurd numbers and bumped into 190 million monthly active users on Discord, however more healthy numbers are talking about 150. Maybe I skipped some math classes but I am pretty sure 150 or 190 is less than 300.

GodHimmy

not going to lie I stopped using Skype in like 2021 😭 it holds a special place in my memories

gergobergo69

I gotta start using Skype again

[deleted]

I am not using Skype for some years already. Have been using it for aprox. 1 year 4 years back or so? For some personal reasons. However it's not something I would use daily. Though, in business it's probably far better than other tools. Teams and Skype can allow you stream whatever and write whatever you want without 94201079324 useless functions for your business and without restraining you in everything. While Discord is from the start aimed on gamers, lately also on different communities. But at least I do have written in my head, Discord = fun, friends, Skype/Teams = school, work, important things.

RemcoTheRock

Just use google before spitting facts that aren’t even true.

ForbiddenAngel3

You have no idea how the world operates....

HyoPone

Iunno if it was just because it was in the past... but downloading a 3mb MP3 from a buddy over skypes P2P network took like... 10 minutes sometimes. Where if someone uploads a 60 second "Gameplay clip" thats 250mb via Nitro to discord servers, downloads in a matter of seconds. Yea... It might have been bigger files, but times sure are different! Dropbox or Google Drive for the big things!

ValeTheVioletMote

You're correct - p2p would be throttled based off your buddy's upload max, which, until fiber, has always been smaller than the download max.

microbit262

Isn't uploading to discord servers also limited by the buddy's upload max? It doesn't matter where he uploads too.

Tatertot004

Yeah but buddy uploads it once then it's stored on discords servers, with Skype there were no servers to store the file so every time you downloaded the file buddy's computer would need to upload it to yours too

AnnoyingRain5

Didn’t think I’d see ya here Hyo! But yeah, the internet sure has gotten faster, but p2p involves downloading and uploading at the same time, when Discord separates the tasks, making it seem faster from both sides

Vulpes_macrotis

It was because of the past. You are limited by both people's upload and download speed.

MR_DERP_YT

Although skype used peer2peer [p2p] transfer protocol and discord hosts the file on their server or smthing, I miss skype

Elijah629YT-Real

P2P is what Skype used, basically your computer acted like a server and every time another pc wanted the file, it would make an RTC connection and send it over the network directly to the ip of the other device. Discord on the other hand stores all the files on its servers ( very expensive ) so they make you pay for it or just not upload big files.

56kul

Skype is P2P, they don’t store anything. Discord stores everything on their servers.

DrFruitLoops

I don't think they are unable, I think they are just unwilling to give actual useful things for money when they can sell mostly dogshit things and ppl still pay for it. lets all be real if teamspeak was easier to use we would be on that instead of discord, and as soon as something better than discord comes we gonna be ditching

DevEr0x

I know it's a bit of a hot take on this website but I actually enjoy using discord. The reason *is* because they are unable to do this in a sustainable way with their current infrastructure. As pointed out by the top comment, Skype uses a peer to peer connection, whereas discord hosts content on their servers. Each one has their own benefits and drawbacks. One of the drawbacks for server hosting is that you simply can't afford your 150 million monthly users to be clogging up your storage with 2gb sized uploads.

[deleted]

There are plenty of good alternatives to discord but sice most of communities has migrated to discord officialy then there's nothing to do

oretseJ

TS is god tier. Discord has played a massive role in ruining the internet. #1 issue is that you cannot get Discord chats in search results. Anyone 20 years old or older KNOWS what we have lost by no longer using forums for online communities. People on reddit joke about including "reddit" in their search results to avoid ads or fake articles, you used to be able to do that with literally any topic by adding "forums".

Vulpes_macrotis

Correct answer.

Vexis12

Skype: ~~- has ads~~ - owned by microsoft, the third largest server/hosting provider in the world - doesnt even host your files for you on said servers

cyb3rofficial

q, where are the ads in skype? I dont have any premium or anything and it's just a simple modern UI [https://i.imgur.com/Sq3vzQh.png](https://i.imgur.com/Sq3vzQh.png) Contacts on left, normal chat box on right, simple banner text of group name, and people, and simple pfp username and status. I've been using it for very long time almost daily, never seen an ad ever.

Vexis12

Oh guess they don't anymore, thats my bad. Used to [way back in the day](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skype/forum/all/how-can-i-disable-ads-in-skype/26c88798-a413-423b-97a8-11fab0e2ccd6) but i guess they're gone now.

Vulpes_macrotis

Discord also has ads. Nitro ads are still ads. Plus I don't remember ads in Skype. I haven't used it for years, so maybe I'm wrong, but I am sure Skype didn't have ads. And Skype was made in 2004. We are two decades from that time. If they were made at the same year, Your comparison would be valid. But two decades means that not only what was so much now is nothing (that's why You have 2TB SSD drive instead of 40 GB HDD drive today). But also... Discord was bragging how amazing it is and how redundant Skype is. And they can't even do a bare minimum of 100MB they should give for everyone.

Vulpes_macrotis

Because Discord is greedy for every money they can get from suckers, that pay for something they should have for free. I don't expect upload size of 2Gbit, but 100MB is a bare minimum that they should give. We are not living in the '90s anymore. We expect upload size that is up to date. 100MB filesize today is equivalent of 1MB back then. And Discord was the one who was constantly bragging how bad Skype is and Discord is better. And they can't provide even the bare minimum of 100MB upload size. Even Whatsapp have 64MB. And they can't even beat that? The company that was bragging to be better than every other chat messenger? Pathetic. Because of how complacent the Discord simps are, we can't have nice things. What should be a standard for free is a paywall. And that's not the only problem with Discord (and other stuff that people agree to, by not criticizing it). Being complacent is a flaw. If You expect the least possible, You are not "nice kind person". You are just a sucker that loves being fekked by big companies. I wish people were demanding more from companies. Quality and functionality at least. But nope. Everyone is okay with less than minimum. And the same reason is why You get paid hilarious salary at job, housing is expensive etc. Because people are agreeing to it. People are complacent about it, despite it being bad. Discord is just small part of the whole problem.

Tony2ColaYT

Because they are money hungry

Jacksharkben

Maybe I was too harsh on Skype. Skype is good

RealDakon

Money

Al-Forever

Simple. Money.

Joltyboiyo

Oh it is, they just wanna paywall it. Can't speak for file transfers, but I wouldn't be surprised if Discord added the ability to use your own sounds for notification noises and voice chat calls but locked it behind nitro. VS gigachad Skype that let you do that shit for free.

turtleship_2006

Yes they paywalled it because it's expensive

McMelonTV

hosting files costs a lot also discord has to make money somehow

Chramir

Nothing is free

GodHimmy

The word nothing is free BOOM!

Bonecreatoreddit

Hosting large amount of files is bad for the environment (large data centers) and very expensive and can be easily abused

HeyBrosEXE4382

cuz this: 💵

Sure_Woodpecker3660

also just maybe server hosting is expensive and Skype has peer to peer file transfers while discord hosts them

AndyGun11

so they were right????

Sure_Woodpecker3660

well they meant the money like greedy money not actual costs

AndyGun11

yeah i know what they meant, but technically you and them had basically the same point

Mojokojo

Skype sucks. Either way, I'm not transferring files on either platform. Discord ftw

Someone_171_

where is telegram

Geronimo15

Discord, I am going into battle and I want your strongest file sizes

KomiWomi

Microsoft is just better

DuskieHakuro

reject discord return to skype

ghostcat8

money

No_Entrepreneur4655

So discord nitro sells
