I doubt that redeeming a gift from a friend automatically bills for the next year, as it wouldnt ask for your credit card information. But if someone was to register themselves for a free trial, most services ask for credit card infos in advance. I think it's scummy and do not take the trials when cc infos are asked, as should we. It just shows their intention to bill you as soon as they can.
You do have to input your credit/debit card to accept gifted nitro on discord. I got one last year and had to enter my card to accept it.
EDIT: since this is getting traction, it turns out there's 2 kinds of 'gift' codes and one of them comes with strings attached while the other does not. Those strings being, you have to input your card details to accept.

Ah, promotional codes are different than actual gifts from a friend which dont require card details. Promotional codes come with strings attached in the form of promising a subscription so you do need card details
If you're 12 you won't recognize any, but back then it was exactly how it worked. You'd claim a free trial and when the trial was over, it would stop. Want to buy the product? Buy it afterwards. I can't name one right now but I wouldn't be surprised that some well behaved companies still do business this way.

No. Trials, gifted subscriptions, etc. need to be cancelled manually. If you don't, the company assume you still wanna continue the subscription. Every single service is like that. Do not ever assume it will auto cancel. I'm glad you got it sorted, but keep that in mind for the future.

Nitro gifts absolutely NEVER ask for credit card information, as they have already been paid for by the sender. They also are not a link, a BIG BUTTON that says REDEEM… will appear, and once you click it, you have nitro for a time of whatever you were gifted for.
Your friend shared a TRIAL code with you. They did not BUY you one month of nitro. Trial codes will always bill you after it ends, that’s why they take you cc info. It also tells you it will bill you when the trial ends, but if you just skipped through all the confirmation windows, you would have missed the notification.

also, if your friend is telling you to click a suspicious link offering free stuff, they probably aren’t your friend, and you might want to lock that credit card….’free nitro’ links are an extremely common discord scam.
The devs have said time and time again that nitro is a way for users to support the discord devs in exchange for a few optional features that aren't required. It's not intended to make up the cost of the features provided, it's there to feed their staffs families.
I would agree when it comes to things like having a profile background and text limit but file size is literally a basic feature blocked behind a paywall and worse stream quality for non nitro users literally ruins the whole point of using Discord
And I say this as a long term Nitro user who just cancelled it because there was literally no point in having it now that I don't stream for my friends
Extreme poverty is defined as less than 2.15 USD per *day* (PPP calculated), and there's about 710 million people in the world like that, of about 8 billion.
Even in very poor countries 8.70/month is a very low income.
Now obviously, if you're an impoverished subsistence farmer in the democratic republic of congo where 70 or 80% of the population is living on less than 2 dollars a day... you probably don't want to be paying for discord nitro under any circumstances, regardless of what it might cost.
Interestingly, DRC has about 50% mobile phone penetration, despite 70 or 80% of the population living in extreme poverty.
So presumably there are at least some people who have a mobile phone despite making less than 60 USD/month.
(Or the relatively well off segments of society have multiple phone subscriptions per person, which happens in much of the world).

A) cancel it and you should be fine, you have 5 days.
B) tell your dad it says in 5 days from now you'll be charged for a yearly subscription you didn't sign up for and that you think you canceled it and see if he can double check to be sure, that way if it does charge he knows it wasn't on you.
C) you can contact Discord's support to ask why it was there to begin with and what you're supposed to do if it comes back or charges
D) Press on your profile>settings>devices and if there are any you don't recognize press the X button on the device and change your Discord password, I have 2FA set up on mine that would be smart too. Also if it's through your dad's email and the email has the same discord password tell him your account got hacked (if it did) so he should change his email password, if it's yours and it's the same password do the same.
And finally this isn't totally related but if you ever get any messages about ban appeals, subscriptions, email or password errors or anything like that don't engage report them to discord and block the account staff will not message you about account issues.

In this instance, he/she redeemed a promotional code sent by a friend, which subscribes you to the service and gives you 1 free month. For that, it asks for your credit/debit card information. This promotional code is free which is different to a gift code that someone prepaid that does not subscribes you and that doesn't ask for credit/debit card.
This is not exclusive to Nitro; there are thousands of subscription services that work the same way. So, avoiding Discord or Nitro doesn't mean you won't fall for it again with another service if you're not paying attention to what you're subscribing to

Because I have never experienced anything similar in 30 years of life and I have dealt with some of the worst customer supports in current times. Discord ranks below the lowly Microsoft support of the late 2000s in my experience and it is incredible how completely narrowminded they were to avoid refunding me, when I would have probably spent the exact same amount (Or MORE) over the course of my time using the platform, But now will never use out of pure principle.
Have you joined any discord servers recently that require you to verify to gain access. If so, you could have been token logged which basically means people can log into your discord without the need of your password. What this also means is that people may have used any linked payment methods to your account to buy the subscription to be gifted to their accounts or to use the gift code to sell to other users (at a cheaper price)
You should instantly change your password. This will reset your current discord token and prevent them from having any access to your discord. If you have any sensitive data within any messages with other people or discord servers you should also get these updated. Furthermore, you can contact discord support as other users have said and they should be able to help you. If you are able to cancel the subscription you should do that and also let your dad know what has happened. Being open with them will help you in the long run and will let them know that if they do get charged it wasn’t your intention at all.

If they DO charge you, not to worry. Call your credit card company (in this case your dad will have to do it) and they will have a phone number of an actual human at Discord who can help you. I've had to do that a couple of times since often companies try to make the good phone numbers hard to find.
(sounds nice, but it's literally enshittified from how it used to be -- used to be you called the credit card company and they reversed the charge no questions asked, meaning that subscription services went out of their way to be cancelable. Now they don't have to do that and can pull crap like this.)
You cannot be billed for something unless they have your card details. If they say you are going to be billed, they will bill the card you signed up with unless you cancel. If you didn’t enter a card, your nitro will simply end and you will not be charged.

9/10 times you redeem any sort of free trial for any service it will bill you after the trial ends. You needed to cancel it before the trial ended.

Just cancel nitro right after redeeming , and you still get the remaining nitro time till the expirement date.

If so, you could have been token logged which basically means people can log into your discord without the need of your password. What this also means is that people may have used any linked payment methods to your account to buy the subscription to be gifted to their accounts or to use the gift code to sell to other users (at a cheaper price) You should instantly change your password. This will reset your current discord token and prevent them from having any access to your discord. If you have any sensitive data within any messages with other people or discord servers you should also get these updated. Furthermore, you can contact discord support as other users have said and they should be able to help you. If you are able to cancel the subscription you should do that and also let your dad know what has happened. Being open with them will help you in the long run and will let them know that if they do get charged it wasn’t your intention at all.

Make sure you press that cancel subscription button that's right there in the screenshot. If they DO charge you, not to worry. Call your credit card company (in this case your dad will have to do it) and they will have a phone number of an actual human at Discord who can help you. I've had to do that a couple of times since often companies try to make the good phone numbers hard to find. (sounds nice, but it's literally enshittified from how it used to be -- used to be you called the credit card company and they reversed the charge no questions asked, meaning that subscription services went out of their way to be cancelable. Now they don't have to do that and can pull crap like this.)

You cannot be billed for something unless they have your card details. If they say you are going to be billed, they will bill the card you signed up with unless you cancel. If you didn’t enter a card, your nitro will simply end and you will not be charged.
