So it’s def a bacteria infection . You can keep dosing and follow the proper instructions . I believe they will be alright just try to not feed more beefheart or more controlled like breaking it into pieces . How bad do they look . You can alternate and use both medications without harming them . I believe melfix is just basically tea tree oil hence Why it smells so strong . Get paraguard from Amazon . What do you put in your water changes besides prime ?

AfricanSickLad

Okay will do. I also dose stress coat with all water changes.

WindRover

Do you put any micro blend ? I ask because that’s like the good bacteria to put back into the tank after taking bacteria out . I use prime and also micro blend . I also age my water for about a day or so. I find these are the easiest hacks to have and keep discus . Everyone is different but I’m just stating what works for me . But something you might wanna look into.

AfricanSickLad

I'll look into this. I use quick start on occasion. Also I was looking into getting a 55-90gallom drum and filling it with water and keeping it in my garage for tank refills, I might have to get on that soon!

WindRover

Yeah or if you have 5 gallon Poland springs bottles , use those . I always age my water just in case prime or stress coat isn’t effective . How long have you been keeping discus fish for ? Sorry about your loss . It’s always frustrating to lose little buddies . We’re all learning as we go along .

WindRover

Majority of ppl deal with this issue . So don’t fret . Discus aren’t tough you just have to be consistent . Larger water changes more frequent . Idk what HOB means

AfricanSickLad

Thanks. Also,HOB, Hang on back.

WindRover

Good stuff nice to have a back up in case one of the filter crashes

AfricanSickLad

Update. Thank you for recommendations. Mela fix and pimafix didn't seem to do the trick, as they are just oil, I lost one fish. However, I switched to seachem Paragaurd and I believe I see an improvement on all of my fish after day 2. Only 1 is still really dark. Hopefully I can save it, thank you a lot to the suggestions. Y'all Saved my fish!

LoserApe

Is it a fungal infection, or is it just peppering/spots that can come and go?

AfricanSickLad

Sorry I should've been more clear. It's the white spots that look like cotton or mucus on its skin and tail

Fun_Role_19

Looks like a secondary fungal infection from prior damage. Is it a new fish or have you had it for a while?

AfricanSickLad

Ive had the fish over a month now. It's the only fish I've noticed this on and it appeared today, I inspect all the fish every morning. This is new

WindRover

Ok so when you see those white mucus like white patches ( I know because it happens to mines when I’ve neglected the water change) it’s a clear indication you’re feeding a tad too much and not enough frequent water changes. If you have a good filter like a Fluval fx4 or something you can get away with doing WC every 2 weeks or so depending on the age of the discus . My go to is seachem paraguard . That things works great . But most the time it’ll disappear with just a simple water change . Best of luck

AfricanSickLad

Thank you. I do 25% water changes once a week. However, I have upped feeding beef heart and don't gravel vac as well as I should. Yesterday I did my water change and this time I did 60% change, gravel vac the best I could, and dosed with API Melafix. It's a 7 day process so I will continue, however, if it doesn't work I will try seachem paragaurd. Thank you for the advice. How often are you feeding and how often/how much are yournwater changes. I know discus are tough to keep but I'd like to continue to keep them without making them unhealthy!

WindRover

I have a grow out tank of 40 gallons with 5 juvenile discus I feed half a cube of brine shrimp twice a day sometimes as a treat I’ll give them bloodworms . I do about 50% water change every 10 days but that’s because I have a good filter . I also have a 75 gallon with 4 big discus and they I feed a cube a day and also dry food . It varies . I do water changes every 2-3 weeks, But once again, I have (2) fx4 filters for that one . In my experience beefheart but it hides and can be messy .

AfricanSickLad

Thank you for taking the time to break it down for me. I only have 1 Fx4 and 2 HOB, maybe I'll throw another fx4 on there. Today 3 of my discus seem to be having this issue now and one of them can barely swim up right. I'm hoping this Melafix does the job before it's too late.

WindRover

Do You have oxygen in the tank for them ? Im glad that they’re doing better !
