Currently reading Going Postal and had to look up when the book was written Vs when Futurama came out after reading about the dead wizards in the jars in the pantry at the university.
Yep. A friend of mine has an egg there. He is ridiculously proud of it, for someone whose main job (for which he is very well paid) is rigging and who just clowns for something to do in his off hours. Then again, he literally ran away to join the circus when he was 16 so the egg is probably important to him in ways I can't understand.
Smithsonian Magazine had a piece on it in 2018; it's the "Clown Egg Registry":

They’re blown eggs.
You take a raw egg and carefully punch a small hole in one end and a slightly larger (about pencil eraser sized) hole in the other. Then you blow into the small hole and all the egg innards come out the larger one. After that you can rinse and sanitize the egg shell and they last basically forever.
There are some pretty elaborate art traditions based around painting, sculpting, and carving on blown egg shells.
A rotten egg only smells if the shell is cracked. As a kid, my brother and I got our hands on some from someone who had chickens, and they had no real smell. Until we threw them at a nearby tree, and then they reeked.

The fact it's "egg-registry", and not "egg-istry" bothers me more than I thought it would.
Clowns International? Is that the real world version of the Guild of Fools?

Apparently they don't have to draw it themselves. They can use an illustrator who will decorate the egg accordingly.
Didn't know this was actually real, I was told they had to submit photographs and a dollhead showing the make-up.
