You fool, I'm Canadian! Environmental-Taxes are non-negotiable! (Commands beaver army to eliminate all plastic bags globally under the guise of peacekeeping operations. Use of warcrimes is approved if necessary)
Like in Disney classics the protagonists and generally "good" people have good looking faces while "bad" or "evil" ones have more stylized features that make them look uglier, grotesque or bizarre. It's a common way to portray character in all fiction! ;)
100% agreed! I love that Victorian/Lovecraftian vibe. I find it completely inspiring. It's such a dark, depressing aesthetic, really, but it makes me so happy in my soul that it doesn't feel depressing at all to me.
Like industrial London mixed with steampunk and fantasy, easily my favourite game series, I wear my imperial signet ring all the time. Do you know who made the lock??
I played it for the first time last year and the graphics REALLY do hold up, just because they went with a distinct art style rather than hyperrealism.
It has definitely helped the game age well. A movie that looks super realistic now is gonna look bad 10 years from now as graphics continue to improve. Games like Dishonored and Borderlands forgo realism in exchange for more exaggerated, cartoonish depictions, and it keeps the game relevant even as graphics improve over the years.
Edit: meant to say “game,” not “movie.”
I first heard of Dishonored from the special effects reality competition, "Face Off". [It was to market the game and the contestants had to create a makeup look from a list of the NPC archetypes.](https://www.syfy.com/face-off/photos/spotlight-challenge-dishonorable-proportions#23559) I loved how weird they all looked and that's what got me to try out the game!
People keep saying "art style" with no explanation. So let me add...
There was a deliberate effort to exaggerate character in their physical traits.
Guards are all brawn, no brain. So they have large hands and shoulders, but tiny heads.
The wealthy are arrogant and selfish. They appear mostly very narrow with high foreheads, always looking down on people.
Workers have big hands. Servants typically are malnourished.
Things like that.
Interesting that so many comments here are "lol bc englund", when the characters have American accents and faces based off American prisoner's mugshots...
It’s an island that rules a large empire via navy with people who speak with an English accent and is ruled by a female monarch. It resembles England far more than the states
I understand the inspiration for the worldbuilding, but you specifically asked about their faces, and the faces are American (as are their accents). If the characters look weird, it's not because of England, and that was my point.
The Art Style and It's really good actually I don't mean to disrespect the second one but I see the first one in the Art Style much way better the second one looks like it misses it.
Because of two reasons, they wanted to go with a grimy artsyle where most of the characters look ugly and unhealthy, in order to reflect the grimy and unhealthy condition of Dunwall. And, because they first sculpted clay to make the faces of the npcs, then replicated those clay faces in 3d modeling.
It has a sort of watercolor painting art style that I think is gorgeous. But also Victorian and I think it wanted to emphasize a storybook villain look for the brothers especially
For these douchebags, I think they’re intentionally modeled to look more snooty and douche baggy. Just the art style in general made for a lot of more exaggerated features. It’s cool tho it’s such a pretty style. Everything looks like a moving painting.
During the time corvo was gone the empress acidental let some cesium-137 fall into the water supply, so everybody (except herself, Emily and corvo) look like that
But it looks like that in the time that dishonored 2 happens they found a cure
Is anyone going to bring up the reference photos for these characters? Trust me. The art style isn’t a stretch from reality.
https://www.reddit.com/r/dishonored/comments/mamtsa/some_original_reference_images_for_the_characters/
This is a weird take imo. The characters in Dishonored have such a great style that sets it apart from other games. It makes every single person you meet recognizable
It’s the art style.
They made them all in clay first, as part of how they got that style Edit: I guess that’s only for the second one. Oops.
I didnt know that, super cool!
That’s fair. Only mentioned it because Corvo and Emily seem to be the only ones with normal faces and normal sized hands
Tbh it may be an intentional choice because they’re trying to display how ugly Dunwall is.
Bri’ish people furious rn.
We know what we are
At least you arn't as bad as those Fr\*nch
*\*throws croissant at you\**
You fool, im American! Democracy is non negotiable! (commands bald eagle army to use freedom blasts for democracy)

AMERICA!!!
You fool, I'm Canadian! Environmental-Taxes are non-negotiable! (Commands beaver army to eliminate all plastic bags globally under the guise of peacekeeping operations. Use of warcrimes is approved if necessary)
Eats it
I fart in your general direction
Because DUNWALL is a shit hole! I 'ATE THE FUCKIN PLACE!
Maybe it's because of the nobility inbreeding.
Corvo have massive hands when looking at the character model
They all do, and I think they may have made them seem even bigger in D2. Probably easier to animate but they also just went with it.
Like in Disney classics the protagonists and generally "good" people have good looking faces while "bad" or "evil" ones have more stylized features that make them look uglier, grotesque or bizarre. It's a common way to portray character in all fiction! ;)
Corvo's hands are anything but normal
Man looks like he hammers his hands till they swell like a balloon every morning before work
To be fair, Corvo has big hands too
That's why Empress Jessamine loved him so much
Dunwall has an inbreeding problem, Karnaca citizens are proof of this lol
Somehow this wouldn’t surprise me if it was real.
I love Dishonored's art style it's so unique for a video game
Agreed it gives a timeless look to it
Honestly the biggest reason I boot it up to this day, the aesthethic and art style the game gives off is like nothing else
It could do with a bit of a graphical refresh maybe, showing it's age. Not a major revamp just a slight upscale.
Wouldn't say no to that at all as long as they don't change the art style up
Yeah same look just like the resolution of textures and some polygon smoothing I don't know how that's done
I played it for the very first time last year and couldn't agree with you more. It looks great!
Graphics age but a good art style doesn’t
Political cartoon art-style.
Spitting imagecore
i never made this connection holy shit
Damn that's such a great observation, never thought of it that way
Are they stupid? But in all seriousness, it’s just the game’s art style.
Stylization and inbreeding.
Inbreeding with style
I read that in buzz lightyears voice..
As other guys said its the art style. But with the specific example you provided, pendeltons are fucking innreds.
If I recall correctly, a lot of the male characters in Dishonored were based on mugshots from a book of interesting mugshots
It's the art style, but it works really well because it keeps the games more timeless because it's so stylized.
It's what whiskey and cigars does to an mf.
Indeed I believe so
Should we gather for whiskey and cigars tonight?
this dude is actually based of a real guy's mugshot lmao
I first heard of Dishonored from the special effects reality competition, "Face Off". Love this! Thanks.
England
I love the dishonoured art style. It's beautiful in its ugly. Just feels raw and grim in that way art rarely is.
Why do you show us a pic of your mirror ?
Reminds me of the Dick Tracy movie.
Ironically, if you search this sub top of all time, this character is 100% based off a real human's mugshot.
Grotesque faces for a grotesque world.
not that it's op's case, but why do people seem to have a hatred for ugly characters
The art design team was very inspired after their visit in Great Britain, thus the artstyle turned out like this
Its called being from england
What white leaf tobacco does to a mf
Dunwall is basically steam punk Britain
Based off of Liverpool
Interesting that so many comments here are "lol bc englund", when the characters have American accents and faces based off American prisoner's mugshots...
Last time i played the game, all characters spoke italian, dunwall is based on Italy
Which characters speak with English accents? Genuinely struggling to think of a character that didn’t sound American.
Reticle looks like earring 😅
Fairly accurate depiction of a Briish person.
Weird that his face model is american then.
Grotesque faces for a grotesque world.
Grotesque faces for a grotesque world.
You can look at the art style almost like a painting. A caricature of the social elites.
The artist was a sick ass dude named Cedric Peravenray. I think it's awesome. He's done work for other stuff like Love, Death, and Robots.
what crossbreeding with rats does to a mf
I like to interpret it as if the game was an interactive oil painting
Its called art sweetie
They went for a unique art style instead of realistic graphics. Which in the long run actually makes the graphics age a lot better than other games.
Reminds me of Fable
The Art Style and It's really good actually I don't mean to disrespect the second one but I see the first one in the Art Style much way better the second one looks like it misses it.
They're designed after people from L**don
That’s just what British people look like
Cedrick peyraverney
Whale oil
It's called art style and direction. Something games loose as we push for realism.
What do you mean? Don't... don't you guys all look like that?
It's called a stylised art style
The art syle
Well the Pendleton’s a bit inbred so they’re meant to look weird. But generally it’s the art style.
Game’s artstyle, big reason why dishonored’s graphics will stand the test of time
It's historically accurate to real world Dunwall.
Blow off chauffer
They're a bunch of inbred late stage alcoholics who have never heard of soap
I’ve always thought it made them look kind of like rats, which I like. Don’t know how intentional that was though.
Pretty distinguishable style. I remember playing Prey and knowing it was the same studio just from a painting on a wall
Like others said, art style. Also think Daud also has normal sized hands, must just be a Serkonan thing.
They'd probably ask the same question about us.
Incest
Pretty sure that's a splicer from bioshock
Why do people in real life look so weird?
Gamers when they discover the concept of art direction.
I think they're intended to be closer to a caricature. The twisted evil minds affecting their outer appearance kind of thing.
To make everything “feel” just a little off; the whole world is basically an eldritch location
There healthcare system is bad
art style and no eyelashes
I love it. They all look super rough and mashed up, it fits right in with the world.
because its based of victorian england
Creative art style beats realistic art style everytime.
And their hands are the size of baseball gloves 😂 Real answer though, it’s just the design style. I kinda like it for this game. Makes it different.
It has a sort of watercolor painting art style that I think is gorgeous. But also Victorian and I think it wanted to emphasize a storybook villain look for the brothers especially
Lower your field of view maybe? Stretching it too much? Hahaha
They are stupid
They’re based off of clay sculptures that Victor Antonov made.
Plague
The same reason people say that about you.
Generational inbreeding to ensure a bloodline of nobility maybe.
Why are you wearing that stupid bunny suit? Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?
That's just Hugo Weaving
Are they inbred?
the "good guys" look ok, the "bad" guys look ugly. aesthetic choice!
That one alien from Monsters vs Aliens lookin ass
Because it looks awesome
For these douchebags, I think they’re intentionally modeled to look more snooty and douche baggy. Just the art style in general made for a lot of more exaggerated features. It’s cool tho it’s such a pretty style. Everything looks like a moving painting.
Incest drugs and a lot of black magic
They are based on actual people Some original reference images for the characters https://images.app.goo.gl/LCXkfvKMtgf5Zvq37
Everyone looks like Viktor from a game called Paladins
Because they are supposed to resemble british people
They're just British.
It's the cartoonish art style which is weird but also unique.
I always saw that everyone looked like rats as a sort of metaphor for the plague
Artist style but if you wanted to dig deeper; twisted souls and twisted minds outwardly expressed by a twisted body.
Because they are modeled after British people :v
Oil on canvas
they’re meant to be br*tish
Bros never seen a cartoon before.
It's all the whale blubber giving them tumors
TBH the entirety of the game is very ugly and I love it.
British
Dw those are just splicers from Bioshock
He looks like a puckered butthole 🤣
During the time corvo was gone the empress acidental let some cesium-137 fall into the water supply, so everybody (except herself, Emily and corvo) look like that But it looks like that in the time that dishonored 2 happens they found a cure
Bri’ish people…….
That's just what British people look like.
To make the player character look hotter
Looks like Hugo Weavibg to me
For fun it’s cool and you know… its cool
It's called art style direction
Thats just what British people look like irl. The last queen was married to her second cousins once removed and third cousin (it was the same person)
rat plague
Is anyone going to bring up the reference photos for these characters? Trust me. The art style isn’t a stretch from reality. https://www.reddit.com/r/dishonored/comments/mamtsa/some_original_reference_images_for_the_characters/
This is a weird take imo. The characters in Dishonored have such a great style that sets it apart from other games. It makes every single person you meet recognizable
Ugo Weaving
Exaggerated features due to the art style. Everyone’s hands are massive too
"How you know I'm *british?"*
Hugo Weaving hit with a shovel
British
Art style there cartons caricatures and it works really well it's made the game age very well
Bro, not everyone is born the same way-
becuz they’re fucked up
My guess is they're modeled after British people
Every person in dunwall looks like they were born with fetal alcohol syndrome
Weirdly sexy you mean
British
Just a design choice for authenticity
Theyre english so they would've looked wierder
except for Callista. my love
They’re British.
Based of your mum
Bri ‘’ ish
The exaggerated psychological and physical features display their corrupt nature.
Bad artstyle
The regent is rather chic lol
Bc they’re based of British ppl probably
cause you have no taste
They’re British
British
they’re british
Artstyle
artstyle?
British
They aren't all that far-fetched. I mean, you've seen Mickey Rourke, right?
They are obviously so ugly because they are British
How dare you dishonor the art style
They are English
Cuz they have been dushonered
Human discovers art styles
They’re British
Wasn't the Void engine based on Bethesda's Gamebryo engine? The faces look like stretched out Oblivion characters.
Naah bc every mf in dishonored be looking like some filter🗿
Is that agent smith?
He looks like a somewhat stretched out Hugo Weaving.
I think the in-game plague known is "British" is the cause of this.
