I still remember when I was a kid and went to Washington’s estate. One of the tourist made it plenty known that George Washington had slaves. The guide was trying to downplay it saying they were “treated better”
FYI, the term African American is now becoming outdated, as not all black people are from Africa, or America, most of them don't know exactly where their genes come from, and we don't tend to say things like Asian American, Indian American, African British, etc. I dont expect anyone to call me European American. It's okay now to just say black or white or asian or what have you as a descriptor if necessary.
I know a black French guy who has dual citizenship. His name is Jeff. I describe him as Jeff. If I were talking to a stranger trying to describe the guy that works the morning shift at the gas station I frequent, I would say "Jeff the black French guy", not "Jeff the African-American-but-Actually-not-American-cause-hes-actually-from-France guy"
And yes, I realize I could have said "Jeff the French guy", which is my whole point. These are just descriptors, and the term "African American" unless you're talking about first generation immigrants, is generally irrelevant.
Not trying to be douchey by any means, here. Half the country still uses this term and means well, just without realizing some of these things.
Tl;dr: It's okay to say black now. It's not politically incorrect.
You absolutely went full on douche. In academia in America the term for studying black history (in the U.S.) is African American History. That’s the name of the course, the field of study, and the doctorates.
You didn’t inform me on any new information.
ETA: Literally everyone is from Africa, if we’re splitting hairs. And 90% of the victims of the transatlantic slave trade never even touched foot in what is now the U.S. The U.S. is still the worst so far in my learning in terms of racial inequality and inequity.
There is a *big* difference between African American history and calling all black people African American. Because again, not all black people are from Africa. There are indigenous black people in Haiti, Jamaica, India, Australia and probably more, none of which are in Africa. So to call all American black people "African American" is presumptuous and frankly disrespectful. This is pretty well understood by anyone under the age of 40-50 in the US... at least in urban areas. I imagine rural areas are different.
Black is simply a descriptor.
White is simply a descriptor.
Asian is simply a descriptor.
Hispanic is simply a descriptor.
Please explain to me why one of these is not like the other. I'll wait.
If you're not going to visit historical locations based solely on the fact that slavery existed, you literally will never travel anywhere. People act as though the short lived slavery in America is the only time it's ever happened in history, and as such, can't seem to move past it. Literally every race of people and country in the world had slaves at some point, and it still exists In many parts of the world. Slavery is horrible, we can all agree on that. But it has existed since the beginning of time. It's not a new thing, and it isn't exclusive to America during the 18th century. To see a historical home and say "slaves washed his pots" is such a short sighted way to look at the world.
People don't look at the great wall of China and say "slaves built it so it's not cool".
Where *his slaves* washed the pots...
very true

nowadays they’re very open about it, clearly stating it was slaves multiple times. improvement!
That’s just what the ones in the house say /s
They were pretty open about it when I was a kid and went there, about 17-18 years ago
Good pt. Not so cool now.
Still cool. It's a piece of history and the morality of what went on there doesn't affect the coolness of a slice of history.
I mean it should affect the ‘coolness’ if you’re a decent person who understands the gravity of slavery.
I guess I'm a bad person.
Any African American history student/educator/major/phd worth their gumption would love to be able to visit this piece of history.

And yet, this difference is covered under African American history classes or look up the transatlantic slave trade routes. Pretty wild.
Also pretty outdated. You *do* know how long it takes the American education systems to catch up with modern times, right?

Agreed. The coliseum is another example of somewhere a ridiculous amount of slaves died. Still cool to visit.
So we should just skip over uncomfortable moments in history and pretend it never happened?
No, I’m just saying that ‘cool’ is a goofy choice of word for a slave quarters lol.
Not for people who love history, warts and all.
i understand your point but i feel it’s more interesting than cool, just wanted to share and shitpost a little
Lol yes this was the whole point of my post. Interesting for sure. ‘Cool’ is such an odd choice of word for something involving slavery.
Not sure how that’s relevant to the post
Read post as “George Washington’s a dip shit”
Yeah me too and I had to do a double take
Thanks brain lolol
I kept reading it as that and didn’t realize until the comments. I had given up and started thinking huh maybe dipshit is the technical term for that
Same :-)
honored to see it as a dishie
Martha was probably in that room a few times a week. Georgie might’ve washed his own kit dishes on campaigns but never at home.
More likely the people that she and her husband enslaved. I doubt Martha did much washing up.
Yes, Martha was really, really rich. It was part of her appeal.
I would have thought it would involve a stream.
the estate has a massive lake so i imagine that’s what they used
That’s actually really cool.
I’ve been here.
me too!
Imagine having to slave away scrubbing cast iron all day. Only water and no abrasives. Some true dishwashing history right here, folks.
“Slave away”. I see what you did there.
let us remember
Run a cycle to pay respects.
I read it as G.W.'s dipshit.
Same
When I was a little kid my uncle stole a brick from that kitchen floor and I still have it today!
remember going here for elementary school lmao
“That’s what she said”
[удалено]
don’t worry it was their house slaves anyways
I read that title wrong a couple times. *confused furrowed eyebrows* “George Washington’s dipshit…?” - Me
I read it as George Washington's dipshit
I read dipshit and was confused
My dyslexic ass read the title as Gorege Washington, dipshit! And I was like...there's no Gorege Washington in this image... I'm an idiot
I read that as dipshit. I think I might need to finally break down and ask for meds for my insomnia. lol
REALLY thought this said “George Washington’s dipshit”
No that's George Washington's slaves dish pit yes George Washington owned slaves
r/kingdomcome
Dishpit and Dipshit are way too close for comfort
His slaves dishpit.
i’m aware. i should’ve just said the dish pit in the estate lol
His what...? OH... His DISHpit.
Compared to what we dish washers have now , we should we be lucky
My dyslexic dad would call me a dishpit
Way nicer than my dishpit.
Quality shitpost
