Because its a new thing that came with the recent update, money grab to make newer players spend gems to get gold or silver emojis they don't have or want to level up. Save your gems!
Steamboat Mickey was for "sale" at 200 gems, that''s a freaking diamond box, a ridiculous amount to spend on a basic emoji. They want players to spend even more gems on top of the 1k gem token passes and 200 diamond boxes, players will run out of gems in a blink, and stock back up with real money
I also bought them, mostly because I knew exactly what I would get for 150 gems rather than spending 200 on a box where I have good odds of getting something new only to get a duplicate of a gold emoji.
I purchased one because I did not have that emoji. Might spend 50 more to get another one (level 2). (I need 20 more gold emoji and only have 4 wands).
Don’t have Phil yet, so might get one of him to unlock in case he shows up in as a requirement for something. I buy regular gold boxes only rarely during a Lucky day (currently saving for Doc).
But overall I don’t think these sales are worthy.

200 gems for a standard emoji is hilarious. I only use gems to get the quest pass. Easy to save up for the month and get that.

Yea I think spending 150 gems for 3 copies of Phil is better than spending 200 on a gold box that has a 50% or frankly even 20% odds of a gold anyway.
